Question
[1] Why was this necessary? Vermont (talk) 01:01, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Vermont: They weren't using an edit summary; it would have been helpful to know about the ban without needing to look at the dif. Also, I have moved the link to that its not part of the section heading. Hope that was okay --DannyS712 (talk) 01:18, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
- DannyS712, did you consider just leaving them a note along the lines of "It's help if you leave edit summaries. At Wikinger it would have been helpful to know about the ban without needing to look at the dif." without leaving a template? Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 01:42, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Barkeep49: I mean, the template is useful to be able to communicate exactly that sentiment, but I understand your point. I did it without thinking, sorry DannyS712 (talk) 01:44, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

September 2019 GOCE Newsletter
Guild of Copy Editors September 2019 Newsletter
Hello and welcome to the September newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2019. June election: Reidgreg was chosen as lead coordinator, and is being assisted by Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk, and first-time coordinator Twofingered Typist. Jonesey95 took a respite after serving for six years. Thanks to everyone who participated! June Blitz: From 16 to 22 June, we copy edited articles on the themes of nature and the environment along with requests. 12 participating editors completed 35 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. July Drive: The year's fourth backlog-elimination drive was a great success, clearing all articles tagged in January and February, and bringing the copy-editing backlog to a low of five months and a record low of 585 articles while also completing 48 requests. Of the 30 people who signed up, 29 copyedited at least one article, a participation level last matched in May 2015. Final results and awards are listed here. August Blitz: From 18 to 24 August, we copy edited articles tagged in March 2019 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: As of 03:00, 23 September 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 413 requests since 1 January. The backlog of tagged articles stood at 599 articles, close to our record month-end low of 585. Requests page: We are experimenting with automated archiving of copy edit requests; a discussion on REQ Talk (permalinked) initiated by Bobbychan193 has resulted in Zhuyifei1999 writing a bot script for the Guild. Testing is now underway and is expected to be completed by 3 October; for this reason, no manual archiving of requests should be done until the testing period is over. We will then assess the bot's performance and discuss whether to make this arrangement permanent. September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today! Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Disambiguation page
Hello, DannyS712. When you moved Square (company) to a new title and then redirected the old title to a disambiguation page, you may not have been aware of WP:FIXDABLINKS, which says:
- When creating disambiguation pages, fix all resulting mis-directed links.
- Before moving an article to a qualified name (in order to create a disambiguation page at the base name, to move an existing disambiguation page to that name, or to redirect that name to a disambiguation page), click on What links here to find all of the incoming links. Repair all of those incoming links to use the new article name.
It would be a great help if you would check the other Wikipedia articles that contain links to "Square (company)" and fix them to take readers to the correct article. Thanks. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 01:59, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

Tagging of KREPOSTNAYA
I recently removed a speedy delete tag that you had placed on KREPOSTNAYA. I do not think that KREPOSTNAYA fits any of the speedy deletion criteria because A very simple google search gives the needed context. Note that WP:CSD#A1 says If any information in the title or on the page, including links, allows an editor, possibly with the aid of a web search, to find further information on the subject in an attempt to expand or edit it, A1 is not appropriate.
. I request that you consider not re-tagging KREPOSTNAYA for speedy deletion without discussing the matter on the appropriate talk page. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 03:21, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- @DESiegel: Thanks for letting me know, and welcome back to enwiki DannyS712 (talk) 03:23, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- You are welcome, and thanks for the comment. Mind you that page would never survive an AfD as it sits, but it might be able to be expended to minimal quality quickly. Or perhaps not, I didn't do a comprehensive check for sources in English, let alone Ukrainian. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 03:30, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- I have moved it to a draft Draft:Love in Chains but the author is insistent in creating it so far (and added a IMDB as a ref, ugh). Jovanmilic97 (talk) 13:31, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

- @In ictu oculi: Given EdJohnston's explination, as well as the fact that no minimum participation is required in a requested move (Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions#Determining consensus), I'm going to decline to revert the move. Sorry, --DannyS712 (talk) 23:23, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- @EdJohnston: yes he does, but here this is moving a Chinese name to a Vietnamese one which is a bigger priority. It's been 7 years since he attempted to remove Vietnamese diacritics. In any case watch that IP. In ictu oculi (talk) 07:55, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

Sources needed for Days of the Year pages
I see you recently accepted a pending change to October 9 that did not include a direct source.
You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages are no longer exempt from WP:V and direct sources are required for additions. For details see the content guideline and the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide. I've gone ahead and un-accepted this edit and backed it out.
All the pages in the Days of the Year project have had pending changes protection turned on to prevent vandalism and further addition of entries without direct sources. As a pending changes patroller, please do not accept additions to day of year pages where no direct source has been provided on that day of year page. The burden to provide sources for additions to these pages is on the editor who adds or restores material to these pages. Thank you. Toddst1 (talk) 02:46, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Toddst1: I assumed that, since the article added existed, the citations in the article itself counted. Thanks for letting me know --DannyS712 (talk) 02:48, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- You can now use more advanced editing tools on the mobile web. You can turn them on and off in your preferences in the mobile version. [6]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 October. It will be on all wikis from 17 October (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 16 October at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Internet Explorer 6 and 7 are no longer supported. This means the browsers might start looking a bit weird. They will not get security support. You can't read Wikimedia wikis in Internet Explorer on Windows XP or Windows versions that are older than Windows XP. This is because almost no one uses the browsers anymore. Supporting them made the wikis less secure for everyone else. [7]
- In the future section headings might have a share link. This is to make it easier to link to the section. You can read more and discuss.

Recent changes
- The API sandbox and help pages now show more clearly when API modules are marked as
internal
. API modules marked as internal were probably internal before. It was easier to miss. You should look for non-internal alternatives. [8]
Problems
- There is a translation tool we use on wikis with more than one language. For a few days it did not create pages for new languages when someone translated a page. The languages did not show in the language bar. This has been fixed. [9]
- The history and diffs can show wrong content. This is because of a cache problem. It will soon be fixed. [10]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 October. It will be on all wikis from 24 October (calendar).
- Reference Previews will be a beta feature on all Wikipedias and some Wikivoyages. It shows you a preview of the footnote when you hover over or click on the number. It has been a beta feature on German and Arabic Wikipedia since April.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 23 October. See how to join.

Database reports deployment access
Hi. Regarding this note, I just added you to the "dbreps" Toolforge shared shell account. Have you used Secure Shell yet? If so and you can successfully access tools-login.wmflabs.org, you should be able to just run "become dbreps" to log in to that shared account. Then I think someone very helpfully wrote a "DEPLOY.sh" script that lives in the account's home directory. Run that script ("./DEPLOY.sh" probably) and that should update the code. It's kind of rare that I touch the "dbreps" shared account honestly, but let me know if you have any questions and I should be able to help. You can view the account's crontab by running "crontab -l". That's where the schedules are largely controlled. You can copy and paste commands from the crontab into the shell directly to update the report as soon as possible instead of waiting for a scheduled run. A few reports run under a separate "mzmcbride" shared account that only I (and the system roots) have access to. You can see who has access to the "dbreps" account if you have access to <https://toolsadmin.wikimedia.org/tools/id/dbreps>. --MZMcBride (talk) 05:55, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

./DEPLOY.sh
, but-bash: ./DEPLOY.sh: Permission denied
was the result DannyS712 (talk) 06:02, 28 October 2019 (UTC)- I'm glad you're able to log in! Your issue is an easy one to fix, you just need to make the file executable by running "chmod +x DEPLOY.sh". I just did this. Now "./DEPLOY.sh" will work. The other way you can execute shell scripts is by running "sh DEPLOY.sh" or similar, which is what others have been using, according to the "history" output. You can run "history" to see recent commands executed under that account. Toolforge is even nice enough to timestamp the commands so you can see when they were executed. I ran 'history | grep "DEP"' to figure out how others have been executing this "DEPLOY.sh" script without marking it as an executable file. You can run "stat DEPLOY.sh" or 'ls -la | grep "DEP"' to see a file's permissions. --MZMcBride (talk) 07:18, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
- @MZMcBride: Ahh, thanks. I've submitted it to run once now via jsub, so that I can verify that it did what I wanted. Also, should a disclosure be included at BernsteinBot's page that I also have deployment access? DannyS712 (talk) 07:27, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
- You can update User:BernsteinBot if you'd like. I doubt anyone cares. Pointing to a dynamically updated list of people with access to that shared account would be better tho. And could probably be incorporated into the
{{bot}}
template. --MZMcBride (talk) 07:30, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter November 2019
Hello DannyS712,
This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.
- Getting the queue to 0
There are now 804 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.
- Coordinator
Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.
- This month's refresher course
Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.
- Tools
- It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
- It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
- Reviewer Feedback
Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.
- Second set of eyes
- Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
- Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
- Arbitration Committee
The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.
- Community Wish list
There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

Geotechnology
Hi DannyS712 This is Greg Abramov (BHMI) the author of "Geotechnology". I'd like to learn what other "reliable sources" have to be added to my submission to meet the criteria. Hi. I put all the references available worldwide on the Internet and running out of the ideas on how else this article can be improved/edited. I do not see any differences with the article I published here years ago (Borehole Mining). That time, it was an absolutely new topic on Wiki and, as you can see, there's no a single verifiable reference on that page. I do not understand why this time I have so much troubles to publish the "Geotechnology" article which has so many verifiable sources provided. I'm an expert in this Topic with over 40 years of experience but I'm about to give-up. If you cannot explain me what's wrong, please drop it. =GA — Preceding unsigned comment added by BHMI (talk • contribs) 18:21, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Dear Danny, you reverted my corrective edit of the page Alptraum on Wiktionary. I noticed that you don't speak German, or at least didn't indicate that you do. What I wrote on the discussion page was that the spelling, Alptraum, was affected by the German spelling reform, and that the template I used was the correct one, which also adds the word to the list of the words affected by the reform. The template you reverted to is normally used for inter-related terms, advising other editors to add the details to a given page, rather than for a randomly inter-related word. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 18:51, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Mahmudmasri: If you see the next edit, I didn't mean to - I've had some issues with SWViewer reverting edits randomly, sorry DannyS712 (talk) 18:53, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Please review my draft
Please review the draft at Draft:Disappearance of Ashley Summers. I started working on it back in September under a different IP address and I have added some references to my draft since the last time it was reviewed and declined. It was declined for appearing to be a news report, but I have made some corrections to the article to hopefully make it look less news-like. I personally do not believe that the article reads like a news report, at least not in the present version of the page. Thanks. 173.76.246.128 (talk) 13:02, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- I'll try to take a look soon DannyS712 (talk) 16:21, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hello again. Have you been reading my draft? This is not me being impatient or anything like that, but I believe that honesty is a very important thing in life. You did tell me in your reply that you would "try to take a look soon." An important life skill is to start a project as early as possible no matter how much time one has, so I am a little confused why you did not review my draft. Waiting until the last minute is a bad habit to have. Please review my draft, which includes some content I added Thursday. Thank you. 173.76.246.128 (talk) 12:32, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
- I took a look - I have to agree that "this is simply a case of WP:ONEEVENT" - I do not believe that this meets the notability threshold. Rather than declining it, however, I'll leave it for another reviewer in case they disagree DannyS712 (talk) 18:47, 9 November 2019 (UTC)

I need help with mw.Api
I can get latest editor who edited a specific page using API query. API query of the main page (open in sandbox). But how I can get the first revision id made by the user in a row? For example "M" user edits WP:sandbox and the revision is "x" . Then they edit it again and the new revision is "x+n" . Then they edit it again and the new revision is "x+o" (where "o">"x" of course). If I know the value of "x+o" then how I can get the value of the first revision in a row ("x") using API? Note: No one else edited the page during M's edit session. Masum Reza📞 14:43, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

Linking names
Hi, I was trying to check about Dr Eduard Glanzmann- he was a Swiss paediatrician. There is no page for him in English Wikipedia and while I was searching more,I stumbled upon the Swiss Wikipedia page about him.So the page on Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia would probably benefit by linking the name.(Angunnu (talk) 08:30, 12 November 2019 (UTC))

Civil parish bot
Thankyou for the work with User:DannyS712 test/parish.json, I'm wondering if we're ready to file a BOTR although even if passed I don't think we should actually start until I have seen if I can appeal my page move ban (at the end of next month), thanks. Non-admin closure
You cannot close a discussion as "delete" if you are not an admin because you cannot delete a page. buidhe 05:18, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Buidhe: Hi. What specific closure are you referring to? DannyS712 (talk) 05:19, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2019 November 10# Category:Nazi war criminals released early from prison and Category:Alt.Culture. You can see both categories are still in existence. buidhe 05:21, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Buidhe: Generally, this wouldn't be okay, but CfD works a little differently - see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Administrator instructions -
If you are a non-admin, you will not be able to use the /Working page as it is protected, so do not close discussions that require any of the above 3 actions unless you are prepared to implement them manually, or an admin has agreed to help you.
A few admins have been helping me - I post the closes at the bot talk page, admins copy them over (its protected) and then a bot automatically carries out CfD closes. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 05:23, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
