Bringing you warm wishes for the New Year!

in friendship

Thank you for being around, advice for music articles, and your FAC support! - Happy new year, in friendship! - Today I show - in "songs" - yesterday's snow, and today's music, Schon gewusst? in memory of Jerome Kohl, a friend --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:00, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

2022 began happily with vacation. I uploaded images but stopped at 22 January - click on songs. 30 January means 10 years of Precious. It's also the birthday of a friend, - I'm so happy I mentioned his DYK on his 90th birthday when he was still alive. I have a great singer on DYK whom I heard, Elena Guseva, and wait for a Recent death appearance of Georg Christoph Biller whom I saw in action. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:00, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

update: we have now Guseva pictured, Biller pictured better (but still not on the Main page), and one more day of my pics --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:09, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Wow that is an intriguing barnstar directly above. I just dropped to let you know that I followed your suggestion and submitted Olive Morris to FAC (after a pretty thorough peer review). Cheers, Mujinga (talk) 13:46, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

An article you recently created, List of bibliographical materials on Ukrainian music, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Map query

Hey Amitchell, I hope all is well with you. I'm trying to get back into saving Josquin des Prez at FAR. A lot of locations are included in the Josquin des Prez#Birth and background section, so I figured a map might be nice. Unfortunately, I can't find any appropriate ones on the commons—there is one in a book I'm using, and I was wondering if you would have any interest in recreating it for the article. I've seen your map work on some other articles and have always been rather impressed; you can see the map here. No pressure if you're busy with Antartica or other projects, just thought I'd check. Best – Aza24 (talk) 03:50, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi, happy to help, I'm away from home for most of this week, but will sort out a map on my return. Regards, AM Amitchell125 (talk) 06:34, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Looking forward to it, thank you! Aza24 (talk) 22:58, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
@Aza24: map now produced - see here. Please advise regarding any amendments you wish me to make. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 12:40, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
This is great, thank you! Could you possibly label the rivers?—only because they're mentioned in the article text. The one on the right is Haine and the rest is the Escaut—the map I gave above labels the Escaut twice (presumably to avoid confusion?) but whatever you think is best would work great, I'm sure. – Aza24 (talk) 07:17, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
@Aza24: Sorted, happy to oblige. Amitchell125 (talk) 08:10, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you—And I must applaud your fabulous work on Artemy Vedel! I began on Mykola Lysenko, but paused until the book on him I ordered arrives (hopefully later today...). The book is in English though, and I must say, you have more of a knack for these non-English sources than I... how do you manage them...!? When I did Cataldo Amodei, I used the google translate's camera-translation for the Italian sources, which was a pain, but definitely the only way to write a comprehensive article on him. Aza24 (talk) 08:19, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for your kind words—I am usually forced to use Google Translate as well, but where possible I look at a second source to help ensure the facts are correct (even when I don't cite one of them. It usually works, but it's a chore. Amitchell125 (talk) 11:35, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
Ah I see, well it certainly seems to have paid off. My Lysenko book has arrived, and it is utterly massive so I suppose I will be doing a lot of revising with it! I will pick up the Vedel GA later this week if no one else does. Best – Aza24 (talk) 06:29, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Composer

April songs

Thank you for adding to the bio of Borys Lyatoshynsky the very day I added him to an orchestra! - A Ukraine day today: Maks Levin DYK, expanding Kyiv Symphony Orchestra (where I added the composer), and creating Anthony Robin Schneider, the bass who could be heard opening the singing in Beethoven's Ninth twice on 10 March 2022, live in Frankfurt, Germany, and recorded in Auckland, New Zealand. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:58, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Dove sono (Where are those happy moments ...?) - concert with Kyiv orchestra and Aleksey Semenenko (quite a story!) tonight, with the Third Symphony --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:50, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: That's wonderful, I hope you enjoy your evening! My favourite work by Lyatoshynsky so far is his 2nd String Quartet (with its beautiful Intermezzo movement), but the Third Symphony would be great to hear in a live performance. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 13:08, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
Very impressive! ... and now you can listen: Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, Luigi Gaggero & Diana Tishchenko (violin) / Kulturpalast Dresden (25 April 2022 on YouTube (that's 25 April in Dresden, a different violinist, but the same program) - ours pictured here --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:40, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
May songs

I'll use the review from FAZ for orchestra, player and music, including the symphony. - I have the quirky DYK today, which is rare, and I don't quite know why music for peace was deemed quirky. - I took and picked the blue-and-yellow pic last year for May. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:03, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

today performances in Ukraine - for Ukraine - for peace, at the bottom an imaginary set of eight DYK - and more May pics--Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:07, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

I came to tell you that Symphony No. 3 (Lyatoshynsky) will be mentioned on the Main page in a few hours, so if you had time to look at it once more, that might be helpful. - A bit sad that I saw the opera only now. Thank s for creating, - that could also have gone to the Main page. Please tell me next time! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:16, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: many thanks for the heads-up, if you ever need to see what articles I have worked on, see the relevant section of my information page here. Amitchell125 (talk) 09:00, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. Worked on or not, I thought that you - having worked on the composer - might be able to see things for his symphony. For example, we have these different translations of the subtitle/epigraph of the fourth movement, - do we have the original and could give a literal translation? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:40, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
I'd be happy to take a well-deserved break from the GA backlog drive and focus on the symphony, let me know of anything that comes to mind as I progress. Amitchell125 (talk) 09:54, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! - I stumbled over the variations of his name, we have Borys Lyatoshynsky / Boris Lyatoshinsky / Boris Lyatoshynsky. I wonder if categories should match the current Ukrainian transcription? I'd understand that in historic context - students in the 1950s ... - the Russian variant may be correct. Help? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:37, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
I'm sticking to Borys Lyatoshynsky. Russian/Ukrainian names and the politics surrounding them is a difficult area, as I am sure you are aware, and I don't want to get involved in a detailed discussion. Amitchell125 (talk) 10:40, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
No discussion: you could just move Category:Films scored by Boris Lyatoshinsky and redirect Category:Compositions by Boris Lyatoshinsky, and see more inconsistencies (in still different variants) here. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:54, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

June music

June songs

It's now "on", - thank you so much! - Pentecost (on last Sunday and Monday in Germany) brought a harvest of great music in two church services (one with me singing in choir) and two concerts with my brother in the orchestra, - four pictures I took besides the symphonic one. (To be precise, that one was taken of the encore, overture of Taras Bulba, - for the symphony, the closest percussionist had "ruled" over the battery at the other end of the stage. I don't take pictures during the program.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:33, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

Crazy idea in the morning: should me try to make the symphony a GA? We could add about its exposure, - there are reviews not detailed though. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:49, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: great idea, but the GA drive will be a priority for me until next month. Amitchell125 (talk) 07:15, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for improving articles in June! My song collection is especially rich, look, and the hall where I first heard DFD, Pierre Boulez and Murray Perahia, and the symphony was also played there. Do you find the baby deer in the meadow (last row)? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:20, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

August songs

I have a Bach cantata FAC open, would you be interested? The coordinator wants to see action. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:15, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for helping! - new pics and thoughts on 13 August --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:53, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

I'm glad to see that Opera in Ukraine is now a GA! Do you have DYK plans? If not I could do it for you. I made a few pic layout changes, - revert what you don't like. I link in the gallery of the houses, the places would do for captions, while the full names should be elsewhere in the text. - Debussy's birthday was yesterday, but I was too busy biking to promote it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:36, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

I didn't ask about Vedel for DYK because today was the last chance. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:39, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: I rarely do DYK, but thanks for letting me know. Amitchell125 (talk) 16:58, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
I believe a few hundred more eyes on the topics is worth a bit of trouble, and am quite willing to do it. Which fact about opera do you think could be interesting to general readers, best with an image? The shorter the better, sadly. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:18, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
There are few suitable images available, but I think this one would work. Thanks! Amitchell125 (talk) 07:15, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
I'll see what I can do. - See the church where I heard VOCES8, and more discoveries. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:38, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
I nominated. Can the image description be in English? Could you improve the referencing of the opera's article, and perhaps also the content? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:30, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: OK! Amitchell125 (talk) 19:36, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

Okay. I think everything that's in the lead now appears in the article, and the lead summarises the article. To avoid too much exact repetition I've rephrased things a bit, favouring having more information in the body. I believe this covers everything, but I could be wrong. the rose pic was taken on 11 Sep 2021, and this year was full of music that day, Tag des offenen Denkmals, not only singing in church and rehearsals for Verdi's Requiem, but two concerts at special places pictured, one a synagogue (pictured on its wall). Today three DYK: a piece we'll perform on Sunday, a violinist we heard in June playing the Berg Concerto (my brother played in the orchestra), and a Youth Orchestra shaped by a conductor who recently died. Almost too much of a good thing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:08, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

Julian of Norwich scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Julian of Norwich article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 15, 2022. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 15, 2022, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

Excellent work! I am sorry we didn't get an image, and a more substantial thing to say, but better than nothing. Congratulations to the promotion of Osbert Parsley! Any specific day for him to appear as TFA? What do you think about Borys Lyatoshynsky for FAC? (Then we can say a bit more.) I bet you can add to the opera that Dr. Blofeld kindly started, Shchors (opera).

Thanks Gerda Arendt, I'm working on Boudica at the moment but then I am back to the music of Ukraine. I'd love to get Lyatoshynsky promoted but it might be really tricky, considering how many sources are in Ukrainian. Amitchell125 (talk) 20:59, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
Understand, - do any of the Ukrainian sources mention when Shchors was premiered? Conductor, singers, reception? - I can see that there's more about the opera in Czech, but that's another language which I don't speak. I found a source that says it was also played in Odessa but that's probably less interesting, - also no date for that. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:18, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia:GLAM/National Maritime Museum/Warship Histories

Hi Amitchell125, thanks for working on this, but it is my understanding that the National Maritime Museum has abandoned the project. Is my understanding incorrect? Cheers, Acad Ronin (talk) 15:21, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

@Acad Ronin: Hi, it looks like it, but all the data from the NMM is still available online (I updated the dead links on the project page), and I'm finding it useful for the work I'm currently doing on the royal yachts of the Stuarts—and the ships that accompanied HMS Gloucester on its last voyage. I'm sure nobody will mind if I update the list of ships as i go along. Thoughts? Amitchell125 (talk) 15:26, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi Amitchell125, I agree with your logic. I just wanted to be sure that you were under no illusions about this helping the NMM in any way. I used to use the NMM database a little, but found that it was largely redundant with Winfield's work, which drew on the same Admiralty records. The NMM database did have some minimal info on some vessels that the Navy temporarily acquired outside of England, so it was not totally redundant. I noticed you have some GA, so at the risk of teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, I would warn you against using the NMM as a major source. I have a number of articles on mercantile vessels that are currently being deleted for lack of notability because I relied primarily on online databases as my main source of info, even though those databases were generally more informative that the average item in the NMM database. Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 15:38, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
@Acad Ronin: Thanks for your reply, I'll probably continue to use the NMM for uncontroversial citations, and replace any refs with better ones if I come across them, as there are gaps in what the NMM has put together. I've had a look at Winfield, and I see your point about the NMM being comparatively unhelpful. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 15:47, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

Igor Grechanyk moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Igor Grechanyk, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). Hi, I'd been intending to review Gloucester but was pipped to the post on that. December songs
happy new year

Thank you, and congratulations to your latest FA, Artemy Vedel! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:31, 2 December 2022 (UTC)

Today, we sing for a Marian feast, I learned that Yvonne Ciannella died, the soprano who impressed me in my first night at the opera, and as she died in March, sadly no Main page reverence is possible, - at least she had a good DYK, at a time when opera singers were considered interesting. I'm proud today that Christiane Hörbiger made it to that corner, and happy that we celebrate the birthday of Jean Sibelius again. Please check out Volodymyr Kozhukhar whom I nominated for it. - I heard an excellent Christmas concert yesterday, by Tenebrae, and a short excerpt of them singing "Deo gracias" is also linked from my talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:01, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

Today was a day rich in music, with two new pictures, and also rich in WP:QAI contributions on the Main page: the TFA, 2 DYK and 2 RD with members as principal editors. The church pictured there (not by me, nice snow dust and tall evergreen) comes with memories, detailed on my talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:49, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

Latest pics, with an opera discovery and some snow. Today my talk has a DYK that was planned for 22 November, among the recent deaths the author of Duck, Death and the Tulip, and now a choir pic of "our" concert last Sunday, likely to become next year's lead image. Enjoy. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:12, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Boudica

On 21 December 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Boudica, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Boudica's actual name is unknown? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Boudica. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Boudica), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Osbert Parsley scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Osbert Parsley article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 10, 2023. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page blurb, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 10, 2023, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. If you wish to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article, you can do so at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/November 2022.

I suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks and congratulations Jimfbleak - talk to me? 15:17, 27 December 2022 (UTC)

January songs

That's good news to begin the year, but first thank you and the whole team today for having come to the rescue of History of timekeeping devices, introduced (in 2008!): "This is the second Tzatziki Squad collaboration up for your scrutiny." - A timely contribution! - I mentioned Parsley in the Debussy discussion, btw. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:55, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
