Fair use rationale for File:Ausonia09-da.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Ausonia09-da.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

Wikipedia is inappropriate for referencing

I noticed that this edit uses the French wikipedia as a reference. This is not allowed per our reference policies. Instead of completely removing this, I'll given you an opportunity to make an edit to remove that particular reference and replace it with one that meets WP:RS and WP:V. Image uploads

I've noticed that you have uploaded quite a few images of ocean liners recently. Unfortunately, your uploads are breaking numerous policies. The images are claimed to not be owned by the website you've sourced them from and that the copyright owner has no stake in their reproduction anymore. Even if the website is allowed to host the image, you have stolen them without permission and just because a ship no longer exists does not give you permission to violate copyrights. That is a major no-no here, it gets the images deleted immediately and you can be blocked for future problems. If you are going to use a fair-use image in an article, you need to be absolutely sure of who owns the image and link it appropriately. Then fair-use images cannot be used on any article that does not have a valid fair-use rationale and they absolutely cannot be used on your userpage. Since you've admitted to these violations in your FURs and upload messages, the images have been deleted as unabashed copyright violations. Please do not do this again or you will be sanctioned for violating our image upload policies. This is very serious, and you even bragged to another user how to do what you did in an attempt to circumvent our strict image policies. And with your upload of File:RotterdamRembrandt.jpg, which again, is a blatant steal from the website, who also does not own the image, you've hung yourself. Not to mention having licensed the image as Public domain even though you yourself are not legally capable of licensing the image as such. For these repeated violations of our image upload and copyright policies, I have blocked your account for 24 hours. If you continue to embark upon this behavior once your block expires, further blocks of increasing duration will be applied until you are indefinitely blocked. Just stop uploading images that are not in the public domain or do not belong to you.

Image galleries

I saw your introduction of an image gallery at Carnival Spirit. Unfortunately, per policy, since {{Commons}} is in the article's external inks, image galleries are not allowed in the article per WP:IG and WP:NOTREPOSITORY, and the gallery you have inserted has therefore been removed. -MBK004 23:51, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Regarding this edit summary. Please note, I'm not the editor responsible for removing the sentence (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). I may have removed the sentence in the past, before we had reached a consensus on wording, but I have not done so recently. The only thing I've done recently is change the sentence so that we're not favoring Rotten Tomato's position over that of the other review material; or that the wording is written in a colorful (or editorial like manner) as to mislead the reader into thinking everything was bad, despite the fact there are positive and mixed reviews (1, 2). American Classic Voyages

I appreciate you cleaning up the article. I had hoped to go back and polish it up and insert citations late on when I had more time. Hopefully someone can come back later and fill in additional missing information. I think Delta Queen Steamboat and the coastal vessels deserve their own pages, which presently don't exist.

It wasn't a minor edit, the original article was a very small stub that contained very little, and mostly patently wrong information (eg, that AMCV itself was the name of the cruise line, established in 2000 as a subsidiary of USL, a company that had ceased to exist 14 years previous). American Classic had no connection to the original United States Lines, founded in 1921. That company went bankrupt and the remaining shell of the company was dissolved in 1992. The court appointed receivers later abandoned the trademark, allowing American Classic Voyages to re-use the name for the cruise operation between 2000 and 2001. Since the bankruptcy, the trademark has gone dead again, though a new container line called "U.S. Lines LLC" was set up in 2003 and now owned by CMA CGM Group. I'm not sure who was behind that, or what variations on the trademark they own, but it is yet another new usage of the name with no legal connection to the former companies.

I included the info on the Greene Line as its debatable whether American Classic Voyages was a truly new company or the old Greene Line renamed and reconstituted. Delta Queen Steamboat was bought by a Chicago-based consortium headed by Sam Zell in about 1986 or so and the same group acquired American Hawaii in 1993 and organized AMCV as the parent company for the two lines. If Delta Queen was used as the vehicle for the acquisition, then it was really a renaming of the old firm, but if it was a startup holding company or merger, than it was brand new. If the latter is correct, than the Greene Line is certainly outside the scope of the article and best covered on Delta Queen Steamboat page, if one is ever created.

A couple corrections: AMCV's corporate headquarters was in Chicago. I have copies of the company's old letterhead which confirms that, along with SEC filings, annual reports, press releases, and a great deal of other documentation that confirms that. The company was incorporated in Delaware and had operations offices in New Orleans and Honolulu, but the head office was Chicago. As the scope of the article is of the parent company, the Chicago location is probably most relevant. The company stayed privately held until 1999, when it went public sometime around the 1st quarter.

Also, the name of the coastal cruise operation was "Delta Queen Coastal Voyages", not "American Coastal Voyages". A minor correction, but a correction nonetheless.

Again, thanks for the clean-up. I'll leave any future edits to registered Wikipedia users, I'm just glad to see the article filled out and corrected. The original version was horrendous.

Spellings on Mary Rose

In a recent edit, you changed one or more words from one international variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. Usefication of Raze (video game)

Only after you can find reliable notable sources, then you may be able to post it back to the man article space. Aye there, '1Matt20', I'm a member of WikiProject Ships. To help naval historians here at Wikipedia in the effort of writing and citing naval history articles sometime ago I created the List of ships captured in the 19th century and Bibliography of early American naval history pages. Over the last year(+) I have been tracking down and including names of captured ships and naval history texts for inclusion in either of these articles. I like to think that I have included most captured ships (19th century) and most naval history texts (covering the 1700s-1800s) for inclusion in these articles, so if you know of any captured ships or naval history texts that are not included would you kindly include them, either on the page or the talk page of the appropriate article? Editing in the ARBPIA topic area

Hello Matt

I wanted to give you some advice about editing in the WP:ARBPIA topic area that I hope might be helpful. Just in case you are not aware, the topic area is covered by discretionary sanctions and WP:1RR, so you need to edit carefully and strictly comply with policy. It's important to avoid edits like this, with edit summaries like "Read the definition of war crime- this qualifies as one..." that constitute original research. A reliable source has to explicitly describe the event as a war crime per WP:V. Sourcing is especially important for things like infoboxes because the information there is in the unattributed neutral narrative voice of the encyclopedia. The discretionary sanctions that cover WP:ARBPIA remind editors that "when editing in subject areas of bitter and long-standing real-world conflict, it is all the more important to comply with Wikipedia policies such as assuming good faith of all editors including those on the other side of the real-world dispute, writing with a neutral point of view, remaining civil and avoiding personal attacks, utilizing reliable sources for contentious or disputed assertions, and resorting to dispute resolution where necessary." South Tyrol

Hey, I noticed today that you translated the South Tyrolean secessionist movement page I created into French on that language's Wikipedia, and I just want to stop by to give you a tremendous thank you. It's a fascinating but sorely neglected subject that you've treated very with your mother tongue. From what I can gather we share a fascination with autonomist and secessionist movements in Europe. A question of counting

Hello Matt, how are you doing? Back in 28 May 2013, you wrote for the Larak Island page that it has a population of 466, within that being 98 families. Now that is one humorous case of counting a population. It does not have a reference either. I am just curious to know how you discovered there are 98 families living there? Did you go to that island and count the families? The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending!

First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach!

Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists.

Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page).

Hi, in order to avoid breaking WP:3RR, I've decided to come to your talk page to discuss the article mentioned above. If you want to move this convo to the article's talk page, feel free to do so.

The citation you provided from CNN is from February 21. Pompeo has changed stance a plethora of times on running for Senate. The citation I added not long ago is from March 17. The accuracy in dates here is important. He obviously hasn't announced a candidacy, but in the articles provided from The Wichita Eagle and The Hill (both from the past two weeks, so this is still a current news story, and therefore always changing) but he is still exploring it. As he stated, 'the lord will get him to the right place'.

Just friendly advice to always use the most recently available coverage :)

EDIT: Here's a google search I did, with the most relevant words in quotes (Mike Pompeo, 2020, Kansas, Senate) which displays results from March 9 to March 30 (today, EST, UTC-5). None of them say that Pompeo is not running. There is solely speculation at the moment (no definitive answer).

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Custom signature fix needed

Hi there! You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. Changes to Wikipedia's software have made your current custom signature invalid.

The problem: Your signature contains a syntax error or obsolete HTML tags.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, you can fix your signature, or you can do nothing.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:

  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box.
  4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (Do not click the red "Restore all default settings" button, which will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)

Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:

  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Click the Learn more button next to the error to learn how to fix the error.
  3. Update your signature to fix the error.
  4. Click Save to update to your newly fixed signature.

Solution 3: Do nothing:

  1. In accordance with a recent request for comment, all invalid signatures will be changed to the default, which looks like "Example (talk)", one month from now.
