Wikipedia:Meetup/Riverside/WLL/2013

As part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries, University of California, Riverside presents three editathon events drawing on two very special sets of collections held by UCR Libraries: Special Collections & Archives, with its emphases on the Eaton Science Fiction Collection, the Tuskegee Airmen, the Inland Empire, and the Water Resources Collections and Archives. The first date will be on October 12, 2013. The second will be on October 26, 2013. The third will be on November 23, 2013. All three of these events will be held in the Special Collections & Archives Reading Room on the 4th Floor of the Tomás Rivera Library. All three of these editathons will be comprised of a new editor training section in the morning and an editathon in the afternoon. If you already know how to edit and want to get straight to business, you can do that, too! If you would like to volunteer to help teach, please email an organizer! Focus

This editathon offers a panoply of different topics editors can choose to work on, from Science Fiction to the Tuskegee Airmen; from the career of Tomás Rivera to the political, cultural, and social life of the Inland Empire; from Water Resources to Native American literature, art, and culture.

FAQ

Do I have to register to attend, or can I just arrive on the day?

Anyone who wants to attend can do so with or without rsvp, although rsvp is desirable so we know how many to get food for :)

Do I have to pay to participate?

No, the event is free and open to everyone.

Do I have to be a member of Wikimedia?

No, this event is open to everyone.

Do I need to have technical expertise and experience with Wikipedia to participate?

All are welcome. New editor instructions and tutorials will be available to those less familiar with Wikipedia editing.

Can I bring my camera?

Yes, please do, you can take photos of the collections!

Do I have to own/bring a laptop?

Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops. However, there are a limited amount of laptops available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Where do I park?

The UCR Libraries will be making arrangements with UCR Transportation and Parking Services to arrange for parking permits for participants. More information contact carolem@ucr.edu.

I live in Ventura County, and getting to UC Riverside would be a long expensive trip for me. I'm quite familiar with the Eaton Collection (At least one of my friends, Fred Patten, has made a major contribution.) but this just isn't practical for me, especially as I'd probably be fighting traffic both ways. I have been heavily involved inScience Fiction, Comics and Genre Fictions of all types since my teens when I first published. I have degrees in Anthropology, Linguistics, Archeology, Folklore and Comparative Religion. Iused to work for Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact Magazine, Isacc Asimov's Science Fiction magazine, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchock's Mystery Magazine. After that, I become deeply involved in Documenting the Silver Age of Comics, Horror Fiction and moved to wrok in the Film Industry as a Development executive and eventually a Literary and Subsidiary Rights Agent. I know the RIverside collections have a welath of photos from Fan Photog's collections and I would love to dive into those to Identify and tag the photos, many of which I am in myself. I can also bring some of my own photos for Scanning, Sadly, I am without transportation on any of these days. My husband is booked solid on a film project and I don't trust my car to make the distance until after I get new tires installed and a major tune-up performed. is there anyone from our area, perhaps a LASFS member who would like to Carpool down there? I'd be happy to pack some lunches for us. I'm a great cook and gourmet lunch-packer. ;-) Salad Niçoise sandwich wraps, anybody? Aztec Xocolātl spiced brownies? Coconut chicken fingers?
