On 14 October 2024, the Israeli Air Force struck tents within the grounds of the Shuhada al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir el-Balah, Gaza Strip. As of 14 October 2024, at least 5 people were confirmed killed in the attack and at least 70 were injured after a major fire broke out.[2][4][1] The death toll is expected to increase due to the large number of victims with severe burns.[5] Following the strike, 25 people were transferred to Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza after suffering severe burns.[6]

Airstrike

The strike hit while emergency services were receiving injured people from the Israeli bombardment of the al-Mufti school in Nuseirat hours before, which killed 22 and injured 80 people.[2][7][8] The school was the site of a UNRWA polio vaccine campaign set to begin the day of the attack.[3][9] The strike caused cooking gas cylinders to explode, further fueling the fire.[10][11] Footage showed tents on fire while people tried to extinguish the flames.[8][12][13] More than 20 tents were destroyed in the attack.[5] A widely shared video of the blaze appeared to show at least one person lying on a bed connected to an IV drip, burning alive.[14][15][16] Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said the air force had bombed a "command and control centre" in the hospital, without providing evidence.[5][17] Around one million are estimated to be sheltering in Deir el-Balah.[18]
