[edit]Hi everyone, I’m working on a draft article about Koorosh Ghorbani, an Iranian trial motorcyclist, and I’m having some trouble with sourcing. He is well-known in Iran and has been extensively covered in Persian media, which are considered reliable sources in his home country. These sources were sufficient for his Persian Wikipedia page, but I’m unsure how to properly reference them on the English Wikipedia. I know Koorosh Ghorbani personally and have access to official documents and translated certificates of his championships. He has participated in international races, including two in Mexico and two in Italy, and I might be able to find links to these events. However, most of the detailed coverage of his career is in Persian. Can anyone advise on how to use Persian sources on English Wikipedia? Additionally, is there a way to upload and use translated documents as sources? We’re aiming to introduce him to an international audience, and having an English Wikipedia page is crucial for this purpose. Thank you in advance for any guidance!
Neginghaderii (talk) 05:08, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Neginghaderii: as you're writing about someone you know in real life, you have a conflict of interest (COI) which needs to be disclosed. I've posted a message on your talk page with instructions.
- Please also note that you are not allowed to use Wikipedia for any sort of promotion, which your message suggests you may be intending.
- As to your questions, sources don't need to be in English, Persian and other non-English sources are perfectly okay, as long as they otherwise meet the requirements for reliability etc.
- Without seeing the sources you plan to use, I cannot comment on whether they would be acceptable, let alone sufficient for establishing notability, but just to say that what is acceptable in the Persian-language Wikipedia may not be acceptable here, and vice versa, as each language version is a completely separate project with their policies and requirements.
- There should be no need to upload any documents for referencing purposes, and uploading anything of personal nature, or anything covered by copyright or other proprietary rights, is not advisable, so please don't do that. In any case, sources must be published to be acceptable; private documents and correspondence or similar would not be useful.
- HTH, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 07:25, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, I’m a photographer specializing in sporting events, and through my work, I’ve gotten to know many Iranian and world champions personally. I’ve even interviewed world champions. My most recent project involved covering the World Champion Trial GP in Belgium. This experience gives me a unique perspective, allowing me to write accurate and well-informed articles about athletes like Koorosh Ghorbani.
- Thank you for the detailed explanation. I understand the importance of sourcing and will remove any parts of the article that are not supported by reliable sources. I would greatly appreciate it if you could take a look at the draft again. Instead of rejecting it, could you please help modify or suggest changes that would make it suitable for publication? Your guidance would be invaluable in ensuring that the article meets Wikipedia's standards.
- Thank you in advance for your support. Neginghaderii (talk) 13:02, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- As you have been told elsewhere, your "unique perspective" is if anything a hindrance to writing an acceptable Wikipedia article. Almost nothing from the writer is relevant to a Wikipedia article they write: not their knowledge, not their beliefs, not their preferences, not their perspective. Their background understanding of the subject or the context may sometimes be of value.
- The writer's job is to write a clear, neutral summary of what all the significant independent reliable sources say about the subject, nothing more. Note that sometimes this may include summarising statements that the writer profoundly disagrees with. ColinFine (talk) 18:28, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, Yes, sure, I will remove the parts that need to be changed. Could you also suggest which other parts should be removed or adjusted to ensure the article meets the necessary standards and is accepted? Your guidance would be very helpful.
- Thank you! 92.54.250.108 (talk) 06:32, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- I apologize for asking the same question in several places. I thought there were different communities, and I wanted to hear various perspectives. 92.54.250.108 (talk) 06:40, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

Tsurielsdomi (talk) 08:01, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Tsurielsdomi: this is the English-language Wikipedia, please ask your question in English. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:05, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- @DoubleGrazing what @Tsurielsdomi said, albeit in the Brazil variant of Portuguese was:
- Hello, I have recently written about my article about TSURIEL SDOMI (I am NOT Tsuriel Sdomi, he is my teacher and he allowed me to write about him and use the images). The article was rejected, however, I read the beginners' manual and did everything, I believe, I included references, books and it was still rejected. I believe I am not knowing how to do this, because in my point of view it is correct, with references, appropriate and neutral language. Could someone help me by telling me what would be necessary for me to be accepted?
- The draft is currently in User:Tsurielsdomi/sandbox illustrated with a welter of pictures and imperfect referencing, and written in English. I hope that helps? 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 12:46, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi,
- I apologize for the confusion. I assumed the text would be automatically translated into English.
- I asked Mr. Tsuriel Sdomi to draft the email as Wikipedia suggested, in order to grant me the rights to the images. However, I now realize that I need to change the username first, and I'm unable to do that myself since only a verified user can make such changes. Could you assist me with this?
- When I created the account, I mistakenly used Mr. Sdomi’s name as the username. I would like to change it to "JoaoDavid," which is my name. Is this possible?
- Thank you in advance for your help.
- Best regards,
- Joao David Silva Tsurielsdomi (talk) 17:45, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Joao. You can ask to change your username at WP:CHU/
- Images will not affect in any way whether your draft is accepted or not, so I advise you to stop paying any attention to images until you have got the draft reviewed and accepted.
- Your job as a writer of an article (a very challenging task, which like many new editors you have taken on before spending time learning the basics about editing Wikipedia) is to find reliable independent sources about Sdomi (I recommend evaluating every source against the triple criteria in WP:42), and then forget everything that you personally know about him and write a summary of what those sources say.
- Wikipedia is not interested in what you know, or what he says (or what any of his associates say): it is only interested in what people who have no connection to him have published about him. ColinFine (talk) 18:34, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you ColinFine, I have asked for the change.
- I wanted to write about him because he is someone very significant in the city, I am not so close to him, I knew him before start being is art student and I think he is someone who desire to be known worldwide.
- About his private life and work and Studies I asked him, but the rest is all from trustable sources that I found online, and I put as sources, and it was not accepted.
- But yes, I will have a look at WP:42 as you mentioned.
- Thank you very much for your time and attention
- Joao Silva Tsurielsdomi (talk) 19:28, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- The only thing that there is any point in asking the subject about is where you can find independent sources which are about him. Nothing he says should go in the article unless it is backed up by a reliable published sources - and unless it is uncontroversial factual data like places and dates, only from an independent sources.
- Neither his desire to be known worldwide, nor your desire for him to be known worldwide, is of any relevance to Wikipedia, and if you have those desires in your mind then you are engaged in promotion. ColinFine (talk) 21:51, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

Can anyone help and point me to a list which links are not suitable for the submission? Is there any list of reliable sources which we can use for mention for the References? Terryfilch (talk) 16:22, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Terryfilch: Refer to my /Decode subpage (linked in my signature as "critiques"):
- https://www.theregister.com/2023/12/11/victoriametrics_interview/ is useless for notability (connexion to subject). Explicitly stated to be an interview with a company principal.
- We can't cite https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Cloud-Observability-in-Action/Michael-Hausenblas/In-Action/9781633439597 (online storefront). You need to use
{{cite book}}
and provide author, title, publisher, year of publication, page(s) being cited, and either the ISBN or OCLC#. Same applies to https://www.packtpub.com/en-lv/product/observability-with-grafana-9781803248004 (In essence, these need to be converted to offline cites.) - https://hackernoon.com/unleashing-vm-histograms-for-ruby-migrating-from-prometheus-to-victoriametrics-with-vm-client is useless for notability (routine coverage). This is a how-to guide; these have never been any good for notability.
- https://archive.fosdem.org/2022/schedule/event/adapting_otel/attachments/slides/4975/export/events/attachments/adapting_otel/slides/4975/adopting_opentelemetry.pdf is useless for notability (too sparse/connexion to subject). Name-drop in a plan from an Ubisoft engineer who Ubisoft forgot to throw onto the next Assassin's Creed or Far Cry game. In general, stuff like this is never helpful for notability since it's not uncommon for companies'/organisations' internal staff to submit plans like this, use a given vendor, etc., and claims of this nature veer into notability-by-osmosis territory.
- We can't use https://opentelemetry.io/ecosystem/vendors/ (too sparse). Content-free list of vendors that support a given standard.

- https://www.siliconrepublic.com/start-ups/victoriametrics-data-monitoring-satellites is useless for notability (routine coverage). News of a company using VictoriaMetrics.

[edit]My article was declined for reading like an advertisement, lacking neutrality and independent sources.
I researched other topics and companies (such as Nubank or Mercy Virtual and believed that Telelaudo, a pioneer in teleradiology in Brazil, would be notable. Before I start revising, should I focus on summarizing the parts that support its notability, or is it better to abandon this submission?

- @Maosone You have created a useful article for a magazine, but this is not one. You are correct in assuming that you now need to cut, cut, and cut again. Summarising is useful. Your only job is to prove, verify, that it passes WP:NCORP. If you can prove t then resubmit it. If you cannot, then it will not qualify.
