Thank you!
[edit]Hi, Here's the link to my sandbox https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:AfricanLibrarian/sandbox&redirect=no&action=edit I need the redirect notice to go away so that I can do another draft and submit. Is it possible? Thank you for being so approachable. I have been so scared of editing Wikipedia. I opened my account in February 2019 but had no way of knowing what to do until we started African Librarians Week. Its been an exhilarating ride. Thank you

Thank you for your work getting my article David Robinson (artist) ready for publication. I appreciate it very much! SageMacG (talk) 16:11, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
Edit: Thank you for the comment re: quote length - that makes perfect sense and is good to know! SageMacG (talk) 23:35, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
Ron Roizen here. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this. First, thank you for your help on the David P. Bond draft article! Next, I tried to upload a photo of David that his widow provided to me. There is no copyright problem with the photo. But somehow I failed to succeed with the upload. One last thing: I noticed that copyediting preferred British instead of American conventions regarding the relationship between quotation marks and the periods at the ends of sentences. In David's article's case, American is preferred. Thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronroizen (talk • contribs) 07:46, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
RonroizenRonroizen (talk) 14:19, 2 May 2020 (UTC) here again, Zanimum. I added a number of references to the David P. Bond candidate article and made some other small changes. I was unsuccessful at uploading ah photo of David. Not sure how things move forward from here. And I wonder if you might direct me to a guidebook on how I'm supposed to communicate with you. Thanks. Moving articles from AfC to mainspace
[edit]Hi, thanks for your help moving an AfC page to mainspace such as you did with Ana Margarida de Carvalho. Just wanted to suggest maybe using the AfC script (see WP:AFCH). This automates a lot of processes and catches a couple of things that might be missed such as adding applicable AfC banners to the talk page and adding the page to Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/recent. Also, when us reviewers see an AfC page moved without the script it sends up red flags. Cheers and any help in clearing the AfC backlog is always welcome. Sulfurboy (talk) 01:28, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Sulfurboy: Ah, thank you! I'm just getting back into Wikipedia, after being less active for the last few years. It says that "AFCH could not be loaded because "Zanimum" is not listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Participants.
- Going to that page to add my name, it says that the page is protected, and that only admins can make edits. Which is weird, as I am still an admin, according to Special:UserRights/Zanimum. Are you an admin? If so, can you add me? Thanks! -- Zanimum (talk) 01:38, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry, seeing that there's an application process. -- Zanimum (talk) 01:39, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not. But I'll ping Primefac who is an admin that handles many of the higher functions of our project, including approval of reviewers. I think Admins have certain privileges turned off after a set amount of inactive time, so that might be part of the issue (although my understanding of all that is shaky). Sulfurboy (talk) 01:49, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- You're an admin, so you should be able to edit the page. Primefac (talk) 13:14, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Primefac: I agree that it should, but it really isn't working, even though UserRights says that I'm still an admin. -- Zanimum (talk) 01:06, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- That's the normal edit window (looks exactly the same as it does for me). I know this might be a silly question, but have you tried adding your name? If you can't edit you won't see a "Publish changes" and (more importantly) you wouldn't even see the edit box in the first place. Primefac (talk) 20:01, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Oops. Thank you, it did actually work. It seems I'm quite rusty, @Primefac:! -- Zanimum (talk) 01:34, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:Transit service in Caledon
[edit]Hello, Zanimum. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Transit service in Caledon".
In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply and remove the {{db-afc}}

, or {{db-g13}}
code.
If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.
Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! JMHamo (talk) 09:00, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Zanimum. Thank you for getting to our Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research page so quickly! In response to your comment, it would be great to get a standalone Wikipedia page for JZAR, as while it is connected to EAZA, it is a separate entity. Other similar journals such as Zoo Biology, Conservation Biology and Biological Conservation all have Wikipedia pages too, and we believe the page would have value to researchers. The journal editor has requested that we set up a Wikipedia page to help provide clearer information to readers. If I can provide any more information please do let me know! [edit]Sir done my article properly and cited properly and made it notable . Now it is ready to be a good article. I promise you to make it a great article Aroundwoods (talk) 03:03, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
- Aroundwoods As I see that someone else has already declined the article, I would suggest that this bio would have a better chance of passing if the concept of District President (OBC) was better defined. We simply don't know what this is, and you haven't explained it to us. I think this is equivalent to a riding association chair, in Canada? These people are rarely notable in Canada.
- Looking at the Bhaskar article on Google Translate, it's not about Saini, it's Saini commenting on Kejriwal's popularity.
- The Khabar Fast article refers to Saini as the "former INLD leader". Is that correct? In the article, you described him only as a worker, which is not notable.
- If you write about him on the Hindi Wikipedia, or any of the other Indian-language projects, and they accept him as notable, that's anoter way to add clout to an English Wikipedia submission. At present, though, his notability is just not clear to the reviewing volunteers. -- Zanimum (talk) 15:05, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
Sir , District president is hightest body of district of party. And Bjp is the hightest party of india . He is an famous polition in sonipat district. So please allow it to be an article.

DYK for Horizon (store)
[edit]On 13 May 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Horizon (store), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Horizon, once called "the most automated self-service store in Canada", went defunct less than seven years after it opened? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Horizon (store). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Horizon (store)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

[edit]I hope I'm doing this properly... I'm still trying to orient myself in some of the sub-surface pages here. Thank you for approving my first article, and providing context around the grading scheme. That's helpful to see where it falls on the scale.DeeTailor (talk) 05:37, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- @DeeTailor: No prob! Actually, just seeing the quality scale, it might be a "B". I haven't looked at the page defining the scales for quite a while. You article on Nicole Mangrum seems like it would be relatively complete, and does not include irrelevant detail. For context, the highest a new article can be graded it "B". Shorter articles I usually grade "C". It's through no fault of your own, as you're sticking to the facts as found in reliable sources, and there's only a finite amount of information on most people.
- The only thing that needs addressing, you put in where she attended beauty school, and another user deleted a portion of it, saying "restore to given source". The next source in the article is to Oprah.com, so they're saying that Oprah magazine doesn't mention it. Where did you find that info? Note, we don't normally link to outside webpages in the main text of articles. It should just be the school name, unless the school itself is notable, in which case you can put the square link brackets around the name to create a "red link", in hopes that someone will create an article about it. -- Zanimum (talk) 14:39, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
@Zanimum: Ah! Thank you for explaining the meaning of the "restore to given source" flag. That makes total sense... I'll restore that to what is in the Oprah.com article until I relocate the video interview where the school is mentioned.
And thank you for the note about linking out, I'll observe that convention moving forward. I really appreciate the advice and accountability.
Electronic monitoring
[edit]Good morning, Zanimum, when I went to provide an internal link from the Michelle Alexander page to my page, Electronic Monitoring in the United States (which you accepted a couple of days ago), I noticed that a message popped up that said, "This page does not exist yet" or something like that. What can be done to show that the page does exist and make it easy to link to? To link to it, I had to copy and paste the URL from my Wikipedia page and insert it that way. Thanks so much for your anticipated guidance here and for explications on the rubric for article. Best wishes, MarcyMarcywinograd (talk) 13:32, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Zanimum,
Thank you for your prompt response of my submission "COVID-19 Mask Shaming and controversy," which is an entirely different subject than the other entry, which reads more like a list of recommendations and views of countries' policies on mask wearing during the pandemic. The other article is basically a regurgitation of policy, devoid of information about the controversy, the public shaming-both ways, even violent confrontations. My entry's POV on mask shaming is what everyone is talking about; it's the topic of the day that reaches back, far back, into deep culture wars over individual rights versus the rights of the collective. I didn't see anything in the other article that mentions or offers expert analysis of the issues in the conflict, and the conflict is an increasingly polarizing one. If you still have doubts about the POV or relevance of an entry on COVID-19 mask shaming and controversy, I kindly ask that you consult with a few other administrators, for I think it would be a disservice to Wikipedia readers, those who rely on Wikipedia to not shy away from controversy, while always offering multiple sides of that controversy in a neutral tone, to pass on something so significant to the national and, even international conversation. Thank you, again, Zaniumu, for getting back to me so soon and for raising your questions. Best wishes, MarcyMarcywinograd (talk) 22:50, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
The article Hooked Up (TV series) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No indication of notability, marketing campaign.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. 17jiangz1 (talk) 18:19, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice
[edit]Hi Zanimum/Archive 22, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.
Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.
To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!
Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

Starting a draft
[edit]Hi Zanimum, Thanks for reviewing and publishing my first article. And for the super grade too! I want to write another draft on another topic and send in. I am not yet confident enough about going off all on my own. I prefer to work in my Sandbox and submit for reviewing. However, the redirect page for the article that has been publishing is occupying the sandbox. How do I remove it and start another darft? Or do I brave it and start creating another article from Create Page and can I submit such for review before it is published? Apologies for bothering you with all this stuff. I am a newbie on WIkipedia and I want to learn and get it right. Thank you 15:46, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- @AfricanLibrarian: Hi! Can you link to the page(s) for me, so I can get a clearer picture? Also, I have administrator-level access to the site, which means I can delete pages if need be, including to clear the way for new content.
- And no worries, you're not a bother at all! We're always excited to have new contributors writing about women, and we're always excited to have new contributors writing about Africa, so to have a new Women in Red member from the continent is particularly valuable to the overall quality of our resources. (Also, on a personal level, I'm always excited when I see a contributor is from the library world. Not only does that suggest a strong ability to find reliable source material, but also I'm an archivist, and before retirement, my mother worked for a library.) New article
[edit]Dear Zanimum — once again, thank you very much for approving my first article My pilot, whale. I wrote another one about the Directors of this film, who are at the same time public figures, anthropologists and travelers. This time I have already posted the article myself, however, I would appreciate it if you can take a look at it so that I know if something needs to be done or improved, or that everything is fine : ) Here is the link: Alexander and Nicole Gratovsky. Many thanks in advance! Ioanradostniy (talk) 12:35, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Ioanradostniy: Hi, good work overall. One thing that jumps out: the lead section should be a summary of the rest of the article. Since there's a section about Dolphin Embassy, there should be at least a sentence in the lead. Conversely, Spain is mentioned in the lead, but not in the article. Mind and consciousness research: that's only with dolphins, right? From the lead, that's not clear.
- Skimming through the article, I'd suggest the paragraph about them meeting/baptism/renaming/marriage should have a reference.
- Generally, links shouldn't be in the article proper. (Jim Darling, Toni Frohoff)
- Otherwise, it seems strong. You may consider submitting it to Wikipedia:Peer review or Wikipedia:Good articles, the latter of which includes a formal review process. While neither process is terribly quick — they're both blacklogged — they're a good way to acknowledge quality. Again, I've only skim read, but I do feel there's a viable chance this could qualify as a good article. -- Zanimum (talk) 15:09, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Zanimum: Hi! Thank you very much for your suggestions for improving the article — I will definitely use them and finalize the material!
- I have difficulty with the reference to the paragraph about meeting/renaming/marriage, as they openly talk about it in their offline meetings with readers, but I haven't found any published material about it. Could you please tell me what is best to do in this case?
- Yes, I understand that external links (Jim Darling, Toni Frohoff) should not be used, but I decided that these are significant figures in this field of science and it is important to refer to them in some way, given that Wikipedia does not have articles about them. What's the best thing to do? - remove external links and put a template that the article about this person does not exist yet?
- Many thanks once again! Ioanradostniy (talk) 09:36, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

[edit]I'm not sure I would have accepted a few of the drafts you've been accepting in the last month or so. Some I would not have accepted until they had been cleaned from promotional language (or cleaned it myself); for others I might have wanted better third party referencing for all or part of the article, and a very few I would not have accepted at all;
Obviously, we all have different standards, and this diversity is a good thing--I would never claim my own criteria are necessarily the model for everyone. I'm primarily focused on promotionalism , and detecting undeclared paid editors, and I tend to concentrate of a few areas: academic, politicians, and companies--all areas where promotionalism is rampant -- and where I know a little about the subject and the standards.
The basic test is of course whether the article is likely to pass, so I shall slowly try a few to see what the community standard is. But I also do not think it right to accept articles written in such a way that would make them susceptible to be deleted at afd, when they might be worthy of the encyclopedia when fixed. For some of these, I will just clean them myself, or at least tag them. I never do this sort of thing fast or in bulk--for one thing, it's embarrassing when I find the consensus is not quite what I thought it would, so I do one or two and wait for reactions. (I'm not trying to say that a draft should be improved until it reaches high wquality before being accepted, or that the reviewer accepting a draft needs to fix everything---there are a few reviewers who do these things, and I think it's haermdful by keeping potentially fgdecent articles out of the encyclopedia . Rather, I try to remove the most conspicuous puffery that is characteristic of COI editing, especially if I think the person is clearly notable.
As a start, I have nominated Emerald , marked Tara Kangarlou as largely unsourced, and I've done some copy-editing for repeated use of the company or personal name in Alpes Lasers and Laura E. Kennnedy DGG ( talk ) 22:30, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Problems
- Everyone was logged out. This was because a few users saw the wikis as if they were logged in to someone else's account. The problem should be fixed now. [8]
- Some readers didn't see new edits to pages. If the page had been recently changed they saw an older version of the page instead. This only affected readers who were logged out. It lasted for ten days. It has been fixed. [9]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 July. It will be on all wikis from 1 July (calendar).
Future changes
- The Modern and Monobook skins use the ID
searchGoButton
for the go button. This issearchButton
for Vector. To have the same ID for all skins it will change tosearchButton
in Monobook and Modern too. This will affect gadgets and user scripts. It will happen on 23 July. They should be updated to usesearchButton
. You can read more and see a list of affected scripts.

AfC: Andrii Klantsa
[edit]You had accepted this article, but I returned it to draft space with the following comment: An article you recently created, Andrii Klantsa, was not edited as the reviewer suggested. In addition , the biographical section needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. Furthermore, it seems a rough machine translation from the Russian, andneeds rewriting in correct English grammar . I've returned your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. [edit]Please remember to check to see if a draft is a copyright violation (ideally as the first check); I came across Draft Loyal Lobos (which you did not review), and Draft:Junior Mesa (which you did review); both were from the same author, both were nearly 100% copyright violations, and thus both have been deleted. [edit]Hi. I reverted that edit, as It doesn't look like an "official upload". Does it say that somewhere? The channel looks like the usual Youtube infringement.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 20:06, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
- Hi ThatMontrealIP, it's based on the channel's about page, which links to their official site. The company itself has been covered by Variety, and their YouTube channel is mentioned in passing by this Canadian industry publication. -- Zanimum (talk) 01:17, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- I'll also note, their website makes prominent note of Amazon Prime. A lot of the content on this channel only appears here, and on Amazon Prime. For example, Train 48, a Canadian soap opera, or the candy bar doc. -- Zanimum (talk) 01:24, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

The article Lorne Frohman has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Poorly-sourced biography of a living person
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. —S Marshall T/C 14:32, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- There is a new tag for reverted edits. For example you can see it in the recent changes feed or in the article history. It is added to edits when they have been undone, rollbacked or manually reverted to an older version of the page. [12][13]
Changes later this week
- The number of times you can do something in a period of time on wiki is limited. This could be the number of edits per minute or the number of users you email in a day. Some users are not affected by all limits because of their user rights. They could soon see the limit even if it does not affect them. [14]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 September. It will be on all wikis from 24 September (calendar).

Recent changes
- Admins can now see links to diffs of deleted revisions on Special:AbuseLog. This uses the interface of Special:Undelete. [15]
- Editors are automatically added to some user groups. For example editors are added to autoconfirmed users when they have edited enough times and long enough. Abuse filters can hinder users from automatically getting user rights for a period of time. They can also remove rights user have. Wikis can now ask to change how long this period of time is for their wiki in Phabricator. It is currently five days. [16]
Problems
- Last year some abuse filters stopped working because of a new change. If they tried to use variables that were unavailable for that action they would fail. This has now been fixed. [17]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 September. It will be on all wikis from 1 October (calendar).
Future changes
- You can't see the language links to other language versions from the talk page or history page. They are also not shown when you edit an article. This could change. It is not decided if for example the history page should link to another history page or to the article. You can take part in the discussion in Phabricator.
- The link colours could change. This is to make the difference between links and other text more clear. You can read more in Phabricator.
- In your preferences you can choose to get different notifications on the web or by email. You will see
Apps
as one of the alternatives later this week. This is because the Android and iOS Wikipedia apps will use push notifications for those who want them. You can see the preferences on the test wiki. The goal is to have push notifications on Android in October and on iOS in early 2021. [18] - You can soon put pages on your watchlist for a limited time. This could be useful if you want to watch something for a shorter time but don't want it on your watchlist forever. It now works on mediawiki.org and will come to more wikis later. You can read more and see when it will come to other wikis.
- You can see what Wikimedians think are the best new technical tools this year. You can also nominate them.

- There were many errors with the new MediaWiki version last week. The new version was rolled back. Updates that should have happened last week are late. [20]
- Everyone was logged out. This was because a user reported being logged in to someone else's account. The problem should be fixed now. [21]
- Many pages have JavaScript errors. You can read more and now see a list of user scripts with errors.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 October. It will be on all wikis from 8 October (calendar).
- Letters immediately after a link are shown as part of the link. For example the entire word in
[[Child]]ren
is linked. On Arabic wikis this works at both the start and end of a word. Previously on Arabic wikis numbers and other non-letter Unicode characters were shown as part of the link at the start of a word but not at the end. Now only Latin and Arabic letters will extend links on Arabic wikis. [22]
Future changes
- You will be able to read but not to edit the wikis for up to an hour on 27 October around 14:00 (UTC). It will probably be shorter than an hour. [23]

Problems
- Because of the problems with the MediaWiki version two weeks ago last week's updates are also late. [24][25][26]
Changes later this week
- Live previews didn't show the templates used in the preview if you just edited a section. This has now been fixed. You can also test CSS and JavaScript pages even if you have the live preview enabled. Previously this didn't work well. [27][28]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 October. It will be on all wikis from 15 October (calendar).

- You will be able to read but not to edit the wikis for up to an hour on 27 October around 14:00 (UTC). It will probably be shorter than an hour. [30]
- In the AbuseFilter extension, the
rmspecials()
function will be updated soon so that it does not remove the "space" character. Wikis are advised to wrap all the uses ofrmspecials()
withrmwhitespace()
wherever necessary to keep filters' behavior unchanged. You can use the search function on Special:AbuseFilter to locate its usage. [31] - Some gadgets and user-scripts use the HTML div with the ID
#jump-to-nav
. This div will be removed soon. Maintainers should replace these uses with either#siteSub
or#mw-content-text
. A list of affected scripts is at the top of phab:T265373.

Problems
- You will be able to read but not to edit the wikis for up to an hour on October 27 around 14:00 (UTC). It will probably be shorter than an hour. [32]
- Last week, links to "diffs" from mobile watchlists and recentchanges were linking to page-revisions instead of diffs. This has now been fixed. [33]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- Since the introduction of the interface administrators user group in 2018, administrators couldn’t view the deleted history of CSS/JS pages. Now they can. [34]
- There was a problem with the Change Tags. The software would apply the "Reverted" tag to any page actions such as page-protection changes if they came directly after a reverted edit. This has now been fixed for new edits. [35]
- The Reply tool will be offered as an opt-in Beta Feature on most Wikipedias in November. Another announcement will be made once the date is finalized. [36]

Recent changes
- You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser uses very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It could lead to downgrade attacks. Since October 29, 2020, users who use old TLS versions will not be able to connect to Wikimedia projects. A list of browser recommendations is available. All modern operating systems and browsers are always able to reach Wikimedia projects. [37]
- There is a new automatic tracking category available: Pages with non-numeric formatnum arguments. It collects pages which use the
{{formatnum}}
parser function with invalid (non-numeric) input, e.g.{{formatnum:TECHNEWS}}
. Note that{{formatnum:123,456}}
is also invalid input: as described in the documentation, the argument should be unformatted so that it can be reliably and correctly localised. The tracking category will help identify problematic usage and double-formatting. The new tracking category's name can be translated at translatewiki. [38]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from November 3. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from November 4. It will be on all wikis from November 5 (calendar).
- Administrators and stewards will be able to use a special page (Special:CreateLocalAccount) to force local account creation for a global account. This is useful when account creation is blocked for that user (by a block or a filter). [39]
- The Reply tool will be offered as an opt-in Beta Feature on most Wikipedias on November 4. This change excludes the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias, plus a few smaller Wikipedias with special circumstances. You can read the help page and the troubleshooting guide for more information. [40]
Future changes
- A discussion has been restarted about using a Unicode minus sign (− U+2212) in the output of
{{formatnum}}
when it is given a negative argument. [41] - In the future IP addresses of unregistered users will not be shown for everyone. They will get an alias instead. There will be a new user right or an opt-in function for more vandal fighters to see the IPs of unregistered users. There would be some criteria for who gets the user right or opt-in. There will also be other new tools to help handle vandalism. This is early in the process and the developers are still collecting information from the communities before they suggest solutions.

Recent changes
- You can now put pages on your watchlist for a limited period of time. Some wikis already had this function. [42][43]
Changes later this week
- Information from Wikidata that is used on a wiki page can be shown in recent changes and watchlists on a Wikimedia wiki. To see this you need to turn on showing Wikidata edits in your watchlist in the preferences. Changes to the Wikidata description in the language of a Wikimedia wiki will then be shown in recent changes and watchlists. This will not show edits to languages that are not relevant to your wiki. [44][45]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 December. It will be on all wikis from 10 December (calendar).
Future changes
- You can vote on proposals in the Community Wishlist Survey between 8 December and 21 December. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on.

The article Reflections on the Social Future of Mankind has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No evidence of notability, fails WP:BOOK.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. JayJayWhat did I do? 01:55, 9 January 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can choose to be reminded when you have not added an edit summary. This can be done in your preferences. This could conflict with the CAPTCHA. This has now been fixed. [46]
- You can link to specific log entries. You can get these links for example by clicking the timestamps in the log. Until now, such links to private log entries showed no entry even if you had permission to view private log entries. The links now show the entry. [47]
- Admins can use the abuse filter tool to automatically prevent bad edits. Three changes happened last week:
- The filter editing interface now shows syntax errors while you type. This is similar to JavaScript pages. It also shows a warning for regular expressions that match the empty string. New warnings will be added later. [48]
- Oversighters can now hide multiple filter log entries at once using checkboxes on Special:AbuseLog. This is how the usual revision deletion works. [49]
- When a filter matches too many actions after it has been changed it is "throttled". The most powerful actions are disabled. This is to avoid many editors getting blocked when an administrator made a mistake. The administrator will now get a notification about this "throttle".
- There is a new tool to build new skins. You can also see existing skins. You can give feedback. [50]
- Bots using the API no longer watch pages automatically based on account preferences. Setting the
watchlist
towatch
will still work. This is to reduce the size of the watchlist data in the database. [51] - Scribunto's file metadata now includes length. [52]
- CSS and JavaScript code pages now have link anchors to line numbers. You can use wikilinks like w:en:MediaWiki:Common.js#L-50. [53]
- There was a new version of MediaWiki last week. You can read a detailed log of all 763 changes. Most of them are very small and will not affect you.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 January. It will be on all wikis from 14 January (calendar).

- You will be able to read but not to edit Wikimedia Commons for a short time on 26 January at 07:00 (UTC). [54]
- MassMessage posts could be automatically timestamped in the future. This is because MassMessage senders can now send pages using MassMessage. Pages are more difficult to sign. If there are times when a MassMessage post should not be timestamped you can let the developers know.

Problems
- IPv6 addresses were written in lowercase letters in diffs. This caused dead links since Special:Contributions only accepted uppercase letters for the IPs. This has been fixed. [55]
Changes later this week
- You can soon use Wikidata to link to pages on the multilingual Wikisource. [56]
- Often editors use a "non-breaking space" to make a gap between two items when reading but still show them together. This can be used to avoid a line break. You will now be able to add new ones via the special character tool in the 2010, 2017, and visual editors. The character will be shown in the visual editor as a space with a grey background. [57][58]
- Wikis use abuse filters to stop bad edits being made. Filter maintainers can now use syntax like
1.2.3.4 - 1.2.3.55
as well as the1.2.3.4/27
syntax for IP ranges. [59] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).
Future changes
- Minerva is the skin Wikimedia wikis use for mobile traffic. When a page is protected and you can't edit it you can normally read the source wikicode. This doesn't work on Minerva on mobile devices. This is being fixed. Some text might overlap. This is because your community needs to update MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext to work on mobile. You can read more. [60][61]
- Cloud VPS and Toolforge will change the IP address they use to contact the wikis. The new IP address will be
185.15.56.1
. This will happen on February 8. You can read more.

Recent changes
- Wikis using the Growth team tools can now show the name of a newcomer's mentor anywhere through a magic word. This can be used for welcome messages or userboxes.
- A new version of the VideoCutTool is now available. It enables cropping, trimming, audio disabling, and rotating video content. It is being created as part of the developer outreach programs.
Problems
- There was a problem with the job queue. This meant some functions did not save changes and mass messages were delayed. This did not affect wiki edits. [62]
- Some editors may not be logged in to their accounts automatically in the latest versions of Firefox and Safari. [63]

- Reference Previews will become a default feature on some wikis on 17 March. They will share a setting with Page Previews. If you prefer the Reference Tooltips or Navigation-Popups gadget you can keep using them. If so Reference Previews won't be shown. [68][69]
- New JavaScript-based functions will not work in Internet Explorer 11. This is because Internet Explorer is an old browser that doesn't work with how JavaScript is written today. - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 March. It will be on all wikis from 18 March (calendar).
Future changes
- You can add a newline or carriage return character to a custom signature if you use a template. There is a proposal to not allow them in the future. This is because they can cause formatting problems. [71][72]
- You will be able to read but not edit 12 wikis for a short period of time on 23 March at 06:00 (UTC). This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.
- You can use Quarry for SQL queries to the Wiki Replicas. Cross-database
JOINS

Your advice
[edit]Please take a look at Draft:Damien Echols. This is a properly stated WP:COI contribution. I did a full re-write of the article after the initial decline. I wonder if you see any issues with it that should be fixed. Also do you think that the existing redirect to West Memphis Three page is a problem? Thanks. --Bbarmadillo (talk) 16:55, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- There is a Wikipedia app for KaiOS phones. They don't have a touch screen so readers navigate with the phone keys. There is now a simulator so you can see what it looks like.
- The reply tool and new discussion tool are now available as the "Discussion tools" beta feature in almost all wikis except German Wikipedia.
Problems
- You will be able to read but not edit twelve wikis for a short period of time on 23 March at 06:00 (UTC). This can also affect password changes, logging in to new wikis, global renames and changing or confirming emails. This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 March. It will be on all wikis from 25 March (calendar).
- Syntax highlighting colours will change to be easier to read. This will soon come to the first wikis. [74]
Future changes
- Flagged revisions will no longer have multiple tags like "tone" or "depth". It will also only have one tier. This was changed because very few wikis used these features and they make the tool difficult to maintain. [75][76]
- Gadgets and user scripts can access variables about the current page in JavaScript. In 2015 this was moved from
wg*
tomw.config
.wg*
will soon no longer work. [77]
