Categorisations
[edit]I am concerned about your recent categorisations where you have added categories that are not relevant e.g [1] and [2] and made contentious changes to categories e.g. [3] and [4]. You need to slow down and carefully consider whether each category is justified by what is contained on the page. Mztourist (talk) 05:51, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- Everything else aside, is the Hill 303 massacre not, objectively, a "massacre of the Korean War"? I don't see the logic in completely reverting that. XTheBedrockX (talk) 05:54, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- Categories are not exempt from verifiability rules. There needs to be sourced content in the article that explicitly supports the categorization. In Battle of Lang Vei, for example, there is no article text saying it was part of the tet offensive. If you add category you need to check it first even if it seems obvious. (t · c) buidhe 06:21, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- That's fair. I'll try to be more careful about that next time. Sorry for the trouble. XTheBedrockX (talk) 06:23, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

I have similar questions about some of the categories recently added to Fountain Valley massacre. I know of no reliable source that would describe the Fountain Valley Golf Course, where the 1972 St. Croix robbery-murders occurred, as a "sports venue" or a "hotel," nor would the incident seem to be usefully categorized as an "attack on a building or structure." I suggest deleting these categories, at least. Seventeen categories seems rather excessive. PDGPA (talk) 18:03, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- A golf course is a type of sports venue (which is why I added it), but fair enough, I've removed all the other categories you mentioned. XTheBedrockX (talk) 19:32, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- I suppose a golf course or golf resort (or a private golf club) is literally a kind of "sports venue," but I don't think anyone speaking American English would refer to it that way, unlike an arena or stadium. On the other hand, I don't feel strongly enough about it to undo your edit. Just sharing my reaction. PDGPA (talk) 19:51, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Attacks on hospitals in the Americas
[edit]A tag has been placed on Category:Attacks on hospitals in the Americas indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. ✗plicit 15:40, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Treaty of Manila (1946)
[edit]I don't understand your reasoning in this categorization change. As far as I can see, the topic of this article has nothing to do with military matters except that the treaty was signed in close timeline proximity to the conclusion of WW-II, and both signatories were allies during that war. I considered reverting the edit, but decided to ask you about it here first. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 22:19, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
- That's fair, actually. I used it as a stand-in for a proper "aftermath of World War II in the Philippines category" (don't think it exists as far as I know), but I realize now that it looks a bit weird. You can revert it if you want, I don't mind. XTheBedrockX (talk) 22:22, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi! I noticed that you have just created the category about NKVD prisoner massacres. Good job! I had intended to do that myself at a certain point. Nevertheless, I think we must define more precisely the scope of this category. Should it gather only articles about prisoner massacres committed by the NKVD after the outbreak of the German-Soviet war? In that case, we should remove some articles, such as Katyn massacre, and maybe also adjust the name of the category. However, if you intend to make it broader, it should not be put in categories that suggest otherwise (like Category:1941 in the Soviet Union, Category:Massacres in 1941). Cheers. Dreamcatcher25 (talk) 06:44, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Dreamcatcher25 I was intending the narrow scope of post-invasion NKVD massacres. Adding Katyn to the category was my mistake, sorry about that. XTheBedrockX (talk) 14:31, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
Aftermath of WW-II
[edit]Three of your edits categorizing articles as Aftermath of World War II in the Philippines caught my eye. The first two were in the Treaty of Manila (1946) and Bell Trade Act articles. The article topics there, though they concern events which happened in 1946 -- roughly at the time of that aftermath (the lead section here seems to put that in roughly 1946 to 1949), don't have much, if anything, to do with WW-II or with its aftermath. The third edit was to the Republic Day (Philippines) article, which concerns the creation, naming, renaming, listing, delisting, and relisting over the years of a holiday celebrating the 1946 US recognition of Philippine independence (which event, as I said earlier, is only related date-wise to WW-II). The naming of that category is a bit ambiguous, but I take it to categorize articles closely related to events that are or might fairly be summarized or at least mentioned in Aftermath of World War II § The Philippines. I haven't reverted your edits, but I thought I would mention my thoughts about them here. Cheers, Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 01:25, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

[edit]In my watchlist I noticed that while some of your changes of categories look reasonable, but many of them I had to revert. I would strongly recommend to edit only pages where you have some minimal understanding of the subject. - Altenmann >talk 17:47, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Regency of Algiers
[edit]Hello, hope you’re doing good, can this article be any of interest for WikiProject piracy, European history, American history (Algiers was the first country to declare war on the new American republic and impose tribute on it in addition to make it sign a non English written treaty) and maybe early modern history ? Thanks. Nourerrahmane (talk) 23:31, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Nourerrahmane Probably, but I think this is already technically covered in Barbary Wars and related articles. The current WikiProject templates at Regency of Algiers are fine for now, if you want my opinion on it. XTheBedrockX (talk) 02:12, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Cut and paste category moves
[edit]You have given multiple categories new names by copying its content and pasting either the same content into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move". I've just revered a number of them. Category moves should be discussed at WP:CFD, or if one of the speedy criteria apply, listed at WP:CFDS. — JJMC89 (T·C) 03:35, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Categories
[edit]Please do not add "war crimes" or "massacres" categories to just any article you think is one. A reliable source for those terms is needed. 1990 Tbilisi–Agdam bus bombing does not even have a motive. KhndzorUtogh (talk) 23:34, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- That's fair. Sorry about that. XTheBedrockX (talk) 00:49, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
- No worries. --KhndzorUtogh (talk) 22:18, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- This is WP:OR, you need a source that directly calls it a war crime.[5] And why did you add the war crimes category back without a source for it?[6] KhndzorUtogh (talk) 22:16, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- "The Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 explicitly prohibits the looting of civilian property during wartime." - on the Wikipedia page for looting.
- As for the Battle of Aghdam itself, the source making this claim of looting/pillaging is Human Rights Watch, a very prominent human rights organization. It wasn't that hard to make that kind of connection. XTheBedrockX (talk) 23:02, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- Making a connection is original research. I took a closer look at the HRW, and the claims of looting are entirely attributed to Thomas Goltz, who cannot be considered a reliable source in any way. And the writer, Christopher Panico, apparently is a genocide denier. Keep in mind there is a great deal of criticism of Human Rights Watch. KhndzorUtogh (talk) 23:18, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
- I echo what @KhndzorUtogh has said that making the connection isn't the sufficient. Furthermore for categories, you really should only be adding categories to pages when that aspect is a WP:DEFINING. I've removed several of them from the categories you've made about Category:Wartime sexual violence. Mason (talk) 22:59, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

Mali War
[edit]Please do not categorize all battles in the war in Mali to the specific "Battles of Mali war by date". While the sub-categorization is sometimes helpful, deleting other wider categories that each page is in is annoying and unnecessary, Jebiguess (talk) 17:52, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
- There are a lot of battles for this war. I think some categorization is still ultimately necessary. XTheBedrockX (talk) 18:03, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Hello.
In the protected Stepanakert article, can you add these paragraphs at the bottom of the "Control by Azerbaijan" section?
« In the following months, Azerbaijani authorities dismantled monuments symbolizing Artsakh, including the Giant Cross and the Eagle Monument,[1][2] and statues of prominent Armenians in the city, among them, Stepan Shahumyan,[3] after whom Stepanakert is named, Charles Aznavour[4] and Alexander Myasnikyan.[5]
In early March 2024, Azerbaijani authorities demolished the National Assembly of Artsakh Building and the Artsakh Freedom Fighters Union Building.[6][7] »

[edit]Before adding a category to an article, please make sure that the subject of the article really belongs in the category that you specified according to Wikipedia's categorization guidelines. The category being added must already exist, and must be supported by the article's verifiable content. Categories may be removed if they are deemed incorrect for the subject matter. Please review how categorization works; you seem to be excessively added categories related to Sexual violence, even if it isn't a defining feature of the article. Mason (talk) 23:16, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Before you revert my removals, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ethnic_cleansing_of_Georgians_in_Abkhazia&action=history, PLEASE REVIEW overcat and defining. Mason (talk) 23:23, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- You have reverted another one of my removals.[7] "edit summary does not explain how this is an example of overcat". I have asked you nicely, to review defining features. This is one of many examples of you overapplying Baku_pogrom does not mention anything in the lead about sexual violence. Mason (talk) 23:29, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- AGAIN, please stop reverting. I have asked you several times to review defining. Mason (talk) 23:30, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- I have, and I'm still not completely convinced of some of your category removals. I understand some of these, but for others (such as the Wola massacre) the "Sexual violence in Europe during World War II" category was removed, despite the fact that sexual violence was mentioned both in the lead and the body. Following WP:DEFINING is a worthy pursuit, but that doesn't mean we should be haphazard about category removal, either. XTheBedrockX (talk) 23:39, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- I agree with you that the Wola massacre met the criteria; so thank you for restoring it. But for the VAST majority of the pages you have added, there may have been some sexual violence, but it wasn't the essential element of the page. I encourage you to take a stricter definition than what you've been doing, when applied to looting as well. Mason (talk) 23:42, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- I will try to do so in the future. And please be sure to look over an article carefully before deciding if removing a category is appropriate. XTheBedrockX (talk) 23:50, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions, but in one of your recent edits, it appears that you have added original research, which is against Wikipedia's policies. Original research refers to material—such as facts, allegations, ideas, and personal experiences—for which no reliable, published sources exist; it also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. You are in the habit of large scale changes in categorization for articles you haven't worked on. Often these are not supported by the existing content or sources in an article, such as Assassination of Talaat Pasha. Please be more careful in future. (t · c) buidhe 19:01, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
Before adding a category to an article, as you did to Bombing of Hildesheim in World War II, please make sure that the subject of the article really belongs in the category that you specified according to Wikipedia's categorization guidelines. The category being added must already exist, and must be supported by the article's verifiable content. Categories may be removed if they are deemed incorrect for the subject matter. You did not explain why you removed several pages from Category:Firebombings. Please don't make changes enmass like this unless you can explain why. It does not look to be the case that you were diffusing categories. I have restored the categories. Mason (talk) 19:53, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Smasongarrison I was intending to removed Category:Firebombings from pages specifically about Japanese cities (since it has it's own category). If I removed this from pages about non-Japanese cities, I apologize, and didn't intend for that. XTheBedrockX (talk) 20:09, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
- Please be more careful, and make sure to explain your edits. I'd strongly encourage you to slow down with your category work, and consider how the current category scheme is structured. It's pretty clear from your talk page, that I'm not the only one who has had concerns about how you categorize. Mason (talk) 20:15, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

Categorization
[edit]When adding categories to articles please keep WP:CATPOV in mind; Categorizations should generally be uncontroversial; if the category's topic is likely to spark controversy, then a list article (which can be annotated and referenced) is probably more appropriate.
For example, if something cannot be stated in Wikivoice (for example, if we cannot call a politician a criminal in Wikivoice) then we cannot categorize them as a criminal. BilledMammal (talk) 07:27, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- @BilledMammal Please offer examples of what you're referring to. It helps to be specific, and not every page I edit is on my watchlist. XTheBedrockX (talk) 09:06, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- For example, this edit. You added Category:May 2021 crimes in Asia, but it doesn't appear that this is an uncontroversial statement; the closest the article comes to saying it was a crime is saying
Reporters Without Borders called for a war crimes investigation by the International Criminal Court
BilledMammal (talk) 12:07, 10 June 2024 (UTC)- ? Are war crimes not crimes? And even if it's not a war crime, António Guterres called it an attack on a civilian building. Is attacking a civilian building (without sufficient evidence that it was being used for military purposes) not still a crime anyway? XTheBedrockX (talk) 14:24, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
- It may be a war crime - but our sources aren't sufficient for us to say in Wikivoice that it is, which is what we are doing when we put it in a category like Category:May 2021 crimes in Asia.
- I think this issue was previously raised with you, at #Categories and #Categorisations. BilledMammal (talk) 14:42, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
- You still haven't addressed my point about something being a crime even if it isn't a war crime. Attacking civilian buildings without evidence of military use is still a crime. António Guterres (who is cited on that page) has expressed that much. XTheBedrockX (talk) 15:32, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
- That's WP:OR/WP:SYNTH, as described by KhndzorUtogh at #Categories.
- It is also bad OR/SYNTH; you're assuming that because evidence wasn't publicly released that evidence doesn't exist - which is why we rely on reliable sources, as they can determine whether such evidence does exist when we cannot. BilledMammal (talk) 15:41, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
