Freida Pinto

I read the magazine at the time, and added the information based on that. The magazine's interviewer was asking various actors about their middle name. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 06:08, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

Okay. In that case can you add other parameters of the ref. (title, author, ISBN, et al.)? Vensatry (Talk) 06:13, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
I added it back in April 2012, when it was first published. I don't have the issue anymore. Still, I can add the ISBN off here if you want. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 06:33, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Yes the title and the ISBN. Vensatry (Talk) 06:38, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

Tamil/Indian

I see you made this revert[1]. I was recently granted reviewer rights but I am not sure what the best thing to do is here. It seems according to the categories that the subject is of Tamil origin, so both edits are in good faith. I'll accept yours but I see no reason to not accept the other revision if it reappears. --OJ (talk) 12:21, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

Did you check with the sources in the article? He is not a Tamil. Vensatry (Talk) 12:44, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
I didn't check. That might have come next. I was just pointing out that it is a difficult task sometimes to "accept" or "not accept" pending changes for the simple reason that those articles have been placed in that situation due to long-term vandalism. As such, one generally goes through an edit to check whether there are any obvious red herrings. Although I have every iota of faith in what you are telling me (about him not being Tamil), others may still object on genuine grounds because they think they know differently (WP:OR) in which case a reviewer only notices content dispute. Anyhow I did accept your revision, I just hope you can see my point. --OJ (talk) 09:32, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

For what it's worth, I am still very new to this feature. It is not clear to me why your revision needed acceptance when you are a reviewer yourself. I was always of the opinion that if a reviewer, admin or even auto-confirmed user made an edit that it should be automatically accepted. --OJ (talk) 09:35, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

I'm surprised too! Not sure, but I guess it happened because I had reverted the page to an earlier version (bypassing an 'accepted' version). Vensatry (Talk) 15:46, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

Mani Ratnam's first commercial success

I always thought it was Mouna Ragam. But Mani Ratnam filmography mentions it to be Idaya Kovil, using this as a source. The source reads, "‘Idhaya Koil’, today is remembered more for Ilayaraja’s score. A stifled Mani probably swore he’d not work with a producer who’s a box-office bully. For that he badly needed a success on his own terms and that’s what ‘Mouna Raagam’ a film that he made for his brother GV gave him." What's that supposed to indicate? Kailash29792 (talk) 12:39, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

Idaya Kovil doesn't sound like a Mani Ratnam film, does it? He might have chosen to work in the film because of Ilaiyaraaja, who had recommended his name to the producers of Pagal Nilavu and IK. Those days, any film with the Mohan-IR-SPB trio was sure to click at the box-office. You might want to go through the producer's rebuttal: [2]. A similar thing happened with Kamal and Muktha V. Srinivasan around the same time, which you might be knowing very well. In CWMR, he tells that none of his films (with the exception of PAP) gave him the satisfaction of having made a 'good' film (upto IK). I guess he wasn't able to find a producer after the film, which is why he went back to his brother. Vensatry (Talk) 13:38, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Actually it looks more like he wanted artistic freedom. He believed his brother could provide him that and it worked with MR. Nice job on the filmography BTW. Planning on FLC? :-)  — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 09:50, 24 April 2016 (UTC)
@Ssven2: Sorry missed your message. That's right but imagine what would've happened if he were from a non-filmy background. Thanks Vensatry (Talk) 06:03, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
The reason I brought up this topic was, in page 22 of Conversations, Ratnam called Mouna Ragam "[his] first hit". This contradicts Mani Ratnam filmography, which claims it to be Idaya Kovil, using that Hindu source. I still cannot say if the source explicitly calls Idaya Kovil a commercial success, but we know it does mention Ratnam not being satisfied with the final cut. Kailash29792 (talk) 04:15, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
You're right, but am sure IK was his first 'hit'. Like I said earlier, he never considered Unaru and IK (and PN to some extent) as his films. This mindset might have prompted him to say like that. Vensatry (Talk) 04:33, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Indian Cinema book by DFF

Google Books gives its release year as 1991. But the cover reads, "Indian Cinema 1990". Is there a mistake somewhere? This makes my head spin (in confusion) faster than Shakira's hips. Kailash29792 (talk) 17:26, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

As the name suggests the book might chronicle events that took place in the film world in the year 1990; it may have been published the following year. Vensatry (Talk) 04:10, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

I remember that we both talked about this film twice; you found the title and concept quite off-beat. Its HD version with in-built subtitles is available here. @Ssven2: Not sure if I could offer any help because I've seen the film in bits-and-parts. Good luck! Vensatry (talk) 07:05, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Is it so that no matter how much a book copies from us, it cannot be used here? Even if only a few chapters (albeit to a large extent) copy from us? Or is it possible to request the author to rewrite if we know them personally? Because there is one "author" who my father knows in person, and I have communicated with via email. Kailash29792 (talk) 03:18, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Didn't you raise a request at WP:RSN sometime back regarding this? I've not read the book fully, but if it cites WP as reference, it's not advisable to use it. As for requesting him to 'rewrite' the book, I'm not sure how feasible it's going to be! Vensatry (talk) 07:27, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply, but Dhananjayan has not cited WP articles as a source in any of his books (Best is 95% original while most of the Karnan chapter in Pride has been shamelessly ripped from my work). And whether or not a book cites WP as a source, it would still be caught red-handed. But can a book still be usable if the majority of it is not plagiarised from us, except for the plagiarised chapters? Kailash29792 (talk) 14:05, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
The book not just plagiarizes stuff from WP, but also from other copyrighted sources (DFF archives among others). I wouldn't use such books in FAs. Vensatry (talk) 14:12, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 21:03, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

Hope they help. Maybe its because most of these films aren't quite successful or they are not known very well/not known at all outside their respective states. You figure not knowing the character's names might affect the FLC?  — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 10:03, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

I still see some of Rajini's roles are left "unknown", and they come outside Tamil films. You know anyone who can identify his role in them? Kailash29792 (talk) 10:16, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Ssven2, thanks for the links. I think he played himself in Kodai Mazhai, and his role in Bhagya Debata was merely a special appearance (lasting for 2-5 mins). As for Ondu Premada Kathe, it's a bit difficult for me as my understanding of Kannada is very poor. Perhaps, Pavanjandhyala can help us! Vensatry (talk) 11:29, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

@Pavanjandhyala: Can you please see the above (Ondu Premada Kathe) clip and tell us the name of the character played by Rajini? Vensatry (talk) 10:15, 12 June 2016 (UTC)

Shall let you know tomorrow, if its okay. BTW, congratulations on the promotion of Mani Ratnam filmography to FL status. :) Pavanjandhyala (talk) 16:44, 12 June 2016 (UTC)

Well, i've tried watching Ondu Premada Katha despite being a complete dunce in Kannada. From what i could understand, Rajini played a full-length comic villain role of a middle-aged school chairman with a roving eye and strange body language a la S. V. Ranga Rao. He is shown wearing his big spectacles in his trademark style almost in every scene. People call him anna, sir, ayya, etc. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 17:13, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
So 'unknown'? I don't know if you've seen 16 Vayathinile. The scene (starting at 22:35) pretty much resembles one in 16 V. Vensatry (talk) 17:24, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
I've seen 16 V. In it, Parattai was young, cold, and brash. I like his dialogues in it (thanks to subs as well) and find him more instrumental than Mayil in making Kamal's character a hero. Coming to OPD, the chairman has a strange gait and cartoonish smile which i find in the comic roles of SVR. Despite being a villain, you can't take this guy too serious throughout the film. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 17:34, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
I'm not talking about his mannerisms. In this particular scene, he visualises an old lady in the form of a young woman (or vice-versa). A similar thing happens in 16V (with Sridevi and Gandhimathi). Vensatry (talk) 17:54, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
I do remember that, but somehow i interpreted it about something related to mannerisms. Well, for now, i await the release of Kabali. It looks somewhat intriguing and more metaphor-based drama. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 18:00, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
Did you listen to the songs? Had high hopes on Santosh Narayanan. I'm not satisfied. :( Vensatry (talk) 09:09, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
Moththathula Kabali paatu ketta unakku varudhu "Kaduppu Da", right? ;-) His songs are better on-screen (maybe a few like "Naan Nee", "Un Uyir Athan Isai" (my most favourite song of his), "Kaasu Panam", "Vaa Machaney"). "Neruppu Da" is really firing up material. The rest would look better on-screen hopefully.  — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 13:01, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
SSven2, I think Madras is his best album to date; closely followed by Irudhi Sutru. After multiple hearings now I'm kinda addicted to "Maya Nadhi". The lyrics are just fantastic. It resembles "Rekkai Katti Parakkudhadi" from Annamalai. Vensatry (talk) 04:43, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
"Annamalai Cycle"! Lovely Deva composition that. "Maya Nadhi" does indeed have shades of it. Is it just me or does this come to mind (from 1:15 to 1:20 and 4:05 to 4:31) when I hear "Neruppu Da"? LOL. :-)  — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 06:39, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

"Expert"

If he merely plagiarises from other sources (especially low quality ones, which borders on fruit of the poisonous tree), I wonder how that makes him an "expert". Kailash29792 (talk) 07:49, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

Ironically, a major award (NFA in his case) is a testament to the author's credibility. That said, I wouldn't use his books in our articles. This is such a trivial issue. Vensatry (talk) 09:31, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
But I am certain that at some later point, another edition of Pride will be released with rewritten content. When the 1996 book The Eye of the Serpant (which also won an NFA) got a new edition in 2013, there is no doubt this will. Meanwhile, Best is at least 95% a non-mirror publication, and should therefore qualify as a legitimate source here. Kailash29792 (talk) 10:01, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
