OTRS move - Bendigo TAFE

I have no doubt that this move is correct, but I am concerned with the process. On what basis does an OTRS request allow for the renaming of an article without any process? Can any group request a article renaming for the article about them without any discussion. Am I allowed to know who asked for the renaming and why?

This is a little POINTy I guess, but this whole "secret squirrel" OTRS stuff has some merit when it comes to issues around biographies of living people etc. but if the TAFE used the OTRS to request a straightforward name change, they should have been referred to the talk page - not have an editor with OTRS rights make a unilateral decision without having to provide any grounds, share any evidence or allow for any right of appeal. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 03:54, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

A representative of the institution e-mailed us at OTRS requesting that the article be moved to the more common name of the institution. The website confirmed the name so I moved it. I considered this a non-controversial move and therefore one that did not require discussion. Moves only need to be discussed if they are potentially controversial, which this was not in my opinion. OTRS receives e-mails about all kinds of issues, not just BLPs and we do refer the e-mailer to the appropriate talk page or help desk where it is necessary or appropriate.--ukexpat (talk) 04:32, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:UVALawSchoolseal.png)

Thanks for uploading File:UVALawSchoolseal.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:29, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 23:43, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

NPG letter

I'm not sure that I agree with your change - what was a citation of an external page is now masquerading as an internal link, which is confusing. The EFF letter is presented as a citation, and I don't see any reason why the two should differ in how they're presented to the user. — Scott talk 16:20, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Isn't it a fundamental principle that we don't use Wikipedia and its related sites as references? As user generated content, they certainly don't qualify as reliable sources. I have also just removed the inappropriate reference in the caption to the first image. --ukexpat (talk) 16:26, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
The only place that a copy of the NPG's letter exists is on that page on Commons, so I would suggest that IAR is applicable here. A permalink can also be used to reduce the possibility of the target changing. — Scott talk 11:07, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

I have a question. If you have a user page in more than one language, how do you link them together?KellyEfird (talk) 16:29, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Are you referring to unifying your accounts, or just linking user pages? If the former, see WP:SUL; if the latter, like this: [[:fr:User:Ukexpat|my user page at the French Wikipedia]] which renders as my user page at the French Wikipedia.--ukexpat (talk) 17:17, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Naoko Mori

I'm sorry I am not very familiar with how wikipedia works, but I'm Naoko Mori's official Japanese publicity. I found few information were not collect so I made those changes. She was born in Nagoya so her nationality is Japanese, not British. Her birthday is 29th of November. and so on. I hope you understand why I edited the page.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Ayano Morisaka (talkcontribs)

As her representative, you have a conflict of interest and are therefore strongly advised not to edit the article directly. You should use the article's talk page to request edits, using the {{requested edit}} template. Other users will then review your request and make the changes if they are appropriate and supported by reliable sources. Please take a look at WP:COI and WP:RS.--ukexpat (talk) 18:36, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Dear UKexpat,
I can assure you the corrections I presented are true and can be verified - unlike 'November 19' and 'British nationality' which cannot. If you want verification of me, or the facts I presented - you could do so with her UK agent, CAM. If you require verification through a link/source on the Internet, I can find this too.
As per my last message to you, I am not very familiar with how edits are made on Wikipedia, but It says "If you spot a problem with an article, you can fix it directly, by clicking on the "Edit" link at the top of that page. " on the wikipedia FAQhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents so I thought it was ok to edit directly. if you say editing direct is bad, I will try the request edit on the article talk page, as you suggest, tomorrow - but please know that the facts I have is true and accurate. She is a Japanese national, and her birthday is November 29. Sincerely, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ayano Morisaka (talkcontribs) 17:28, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately we cannot just take your word for it. You must provide reliable sources per WP:RS. Until such sources are provided, I will remove the nationality and date of birth, per policy, see WP:BLP.--ukexpat (talk) 17:36, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Reviewing a new article

Thank you Ukexpat!

It has been quite a learning process so far.

Do you know how I can have the article I created on Blake Colburn Wilbur reviewed? The page has a box in it with the following message:

"This page is a new unreviewed article. This template should be removed once the page has been reviewed by someone other than its creator; if necessary the page should be appropriately tagged for cleanup. (July 2013)"

Reb Anderson

Dear Ukexpat,

Is there some way I can ask an experienced editor to make the changes to an article? If it's a conflict of interest they can point that out and decline to make the change. I have almost no experience in editing Wikipedia articles and would like to enter a biographical fact. Reb Anderson has two daughters. Only one is listed in the box on the right side near the top of the entry for him. His second daughter's name is Deborah Savran. Rebassistant (talk) 20:31, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Deleting Me From WFNX Wiki Page

Dear Ukexpat,

I'm unsure what your motivation was behind deleting me from the radio station WFNX Wikipedia page's "Notable Former Airstaff Page."(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WFNX#Notable_former_on-air_staff). I was an original WFNX airstaff member from 1983-1990 - the last 20 months or so I did weekday evenings further helping the station reach, to that point, it's highest ratings to date. As its Music Director/APD it was I who in 1985 took all the Album Oriented Rock music (i.e. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Pink Floyd, etc.) out of the on-air studio making WFNX arguably the 1st true "Alternative" radio station in America.

Even by 1996's end per all the radio & records industry's trades there was as of yet no "Alternative" format. We were lumped together with every other rock station in America. When Bruce Springsteen's cover of "War" was released as a single in November 1986 in advance of his "Live/1975–85" WFNX was the only one of some nearly 300 commercial rock stations in the entire country to refuse to play the track. KROQ/Los Angeles, CFNY/Toronto, WLIR/Long Island all officially "Added" Springsteen's version of "War" to their playlists.

While all of WFNX's contemporaries continued to play AOR fodder, we decided instead to play only The Cure, The Police, INXS, The Clash, Joe Jackson, David Bowie, R.E.M., Midnight Oil, Depeche Mode, The Replacements, The Chameleons along with older music by The New York Dolls, The Sex Pistols, Kraftwerk, Iggy Pop, The Saints, Moby Grape and T. Rex. I was the person who crafted the sound of this new "alternative" to staid old AOR. It's perhaps the biggest reason I'm widely considered, not by myself, but by what's left of the music business as one of "Alternative Radio's early pioneers.

Started the three-hour Sunday evening new music show "Moods For Moderns" that lasted in some shape or form for over 25 years "Moods" was where I gave Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction, Metallica and countless others some of their very first, if not their first, commercial radio airplay. It was also where, as a member of the Sugarcubes, Bjork did her first North American radio interview.

Over my 8-years at WFNX I interviewed David Bowie, Kate Bush, Lou Reed, XTC (who also played a long live acoustic set) Joe Strummer, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Elvis Costello, Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett, Depeche Mode, Bob Mould, The B-52's, Johnny Rotten, Nine Inch Nails (Trent's first-ever radio interview as NIN), Joey Ramone, Julian Cope, The The's Matt Johnson, etc.

Post-WFNX, most notably I worked as... National Promotion Director during Polydor Records' US re-start where I was part of the team that took the band Tonic from Sunday nights playing Cantor's Kibbutz Room in LA to platinum status. I recommended "Pure Disco" for a US release & furthermore strip the "orphan" Grease Mega-Mix onto its end (we had the rights to Grease too). From 2001-2005 I did Artist Development for Mute Records. I've been a researcher & unpublished writer usually on various musics as well as an independent radio promotion and marketing consultant. I've long been working on a screenplay loosely based on my punk rock youth/how I got into the music business. Just recently I've been asked to join DangerousMinds.net to write about music, the music biz and whatever I damn well please.

I returned to WFNX a little over a year ago to do my first radio show in 16 years. No false modesty – it was a major success by every metric. Around that same time and on my reputation alone I became the promoter of record who produced the 'FNX "goodbye" concert the station couldn't due for itself: We Want The Airwave: A WFNX Tribute. Featuring the best Boston area "'FNX" bands new & old. Orbit reunited for the show as did O Positive who headlined. Parlour Bell and Garvy J. represented the new breed. Legendary 'FNX personalities did DJ sets as did Gang of Four's Hugo Burnham. We raised $15,000 for Progeria research. (http://www.progeriaresearch.org/).

I could go on but it's probably pointless. My entire career has been of the type and length that trade magazines I was featured in are extinct and didn't leave links behind. Anything written about me in the Boston Globe is behind the pay wall, etc., etc., Believe it or not I'm not the type to sing my own praises. Nor will I launch my own website like others in similar circumstances to provide links to old press for Wikipedia's sake.

Please delete after reading. If you don't, I soon will.

Bruce McDonald BruceCMcD (talk) 07:44, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

I deleted all the individuals who do not have Wikipedia articles. The usual practice here is described in the Manual of Style at Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists#Lists of people. So trust me, it wasn't a judgement call about you or your career, but a deletion based on usual practice. I see that the list has been added back so I will take this up on the appropriate talk page. And please don't delete anything from my talk page, that is not appropriate. Your message and my reply will be archived in due course.--ukexpat (talk) 12:37, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

You accused me of leaving a message that defamed Michio Kaku. I would like Michio to accuse me of defamation because I for one know that what I wrote is absolutely true. I for one was a victim of his actions in the cult group Communist Workers Party and I will be willing to stand by my words in any courtroom. This shows that Wikipedia is not an open space nor a place for the truth. He is famous but he should not be able to hide behind his fame. He has left victims in his wake while he reaps rewards. To speak the truth of a public person is not defamation nor is it uncivil. Let him come out and face what he has done.

That may or may not be true, but Wikipedia is not the place to air your alleged grievances. Please read WP:BLP.--ukexpat (talk) 19:50, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
I edited the pages for the above public persons not because I have a "grievance". Nor did I say anything that is not true. I believe that people who have engaged in cult group activity should not be able to hide behind their new personas, make money, engage in public policy, without being open and honest about their history. What this tells me is that Wikipedia can be manipulated by people who determine what they will and will not make public.
This information is available on KeyWiki. I guess people will have to go elsewhere to learn the truth.Maureen May — Preceding unsigned comment added by DaleandBill (talkcontribs) 19:57, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
Yes they will because without a source that Wikipedia deems reliable per WP:RS, it doesn't belong here.--ukexpat (talk) 20:01, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Deleting Me From WFNX Wiki Page, Cont.

Deleting those "Notable former on-air staff" that do not have a Wiki page may well be following Wikipedia standards and practices to the letter. We both know these standards are not executed with consistency across Wikipedia. It's impossible. After my first message deleting everybody except Kurt St. Thomas from the "Notables" section may seem to be the ultimate in fairness and following Wikipedia standards. It could also be interpreted as punitive for my questioning your judgment.

Let's remove both of us from the equation. There's a massive amount of resentment from the now former "Notables" that anyone should edit that section so aggressively and who knows far less about the station and its history. (And they don't even know they're former "Notables" yet). I hope that you can understand that. We feel a certain amount of ownership over this page regardless of whether that's true or not. By holding the WFNX page to a higher standard than so many other Wiki pages it tremendously diminishes the WFNX Wikipedia page as a source of information on the station. Worst of all it diminishes the memory of the station and all the hard work we put in for so little money.

For my part, I've reluctantly been appointed the keeper of 'FNX's early history. I'm the only member of 'FNX's early airstaff that hung in there for the entirety of the '80's and my memory is sound & accurate. This will be demonstrated in large part by the upcoming documentary, "We Want The Airwaves: The WFNX Story" (http://www.wewanttheairwavesmovie.com/ – in the vintage footage I'm the manic guy in blue with the "Coke bottle" glasses. The Hubble telescope ain't got nothing on me), a film in which I played the part of catalyst in so far as it getting made at all but the director himself would tell you I was the only person who could point him to all the sources he needed to get the story straight. (Should you be interested more rough footage here use WWTA as password: https://vimeo.com/70280246 – In the current footage I'm the guy in yellow).

So, ukexpat, here I sit. I've been disabled to some extent this past decade. I've had 3 major surgeries - 2 of which involved the removal of 4 discs in my neck. I'm currently being treated for the 2 Traumatic Brain Injuries I received in the past 10 months. To say my brains are a bit scrambled is an understatement.

Given that my scrapbook has gone MIA. Most of the businesses that would "qualify" me or otherwise provide evidence for inclusion in Wikipedia's WFNX's "Notable former on-air staff" are out of business and/or were never on the 'net. Other 3 articles focused on last year's "We Want The Airwaves - A WFNX Tribute", the rare Boston Phoenix piece still up (http://thephoenix.com/boston/music/139046-wfnx-dies-before-it-gets-old/?page=2#TOPCONTENT) and my work at DangerousMinds.net, there's a few things I can link to that say I worked at WFNX when I said I did but that's about it.

Can you give me any insight as how to best create a personal Wikipedia page that passes your muster? I ask not just for myself, but for everybody else who belongs on that page and were recently deleted. We're all in close touch and believe you me they're going to be all over me with questions.

As I mentioned before I have some brain damage for which I'm undergoing speech therapy and cognitive remediation. It makes it extremely difficult and time consuming for me to communicate effectively. I assure you nowhere am I being facetious. If I in any way inadvertently offended you, I promise you that was not my intent. Please take this all at face value i.e. an attempt to communicate openly and honestly on an issue terribly important to a great many friends, my former co-workers and me.

Thank you. BruceCMcD (talk) 21:23, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

I am not going to debate this with you ad nauseam here, but I will respond to some of your points:
I did not remove most of the list yesterday - that was done by another user who presumably agrees with me. Do not ascribe ulterior motives to other users, assume good faith - in any event I have a thick skin and it would take a lot more than questioning my judgement to upset me.
I agree, the proper place to discuss this in detail is the talk page, where I have already initiated a discussion.
We feel a certain amount of ownership over this page... - sorry but no one owns a Wikipedia article. Furthermore, it is not Wikipedia's job to preserve the memory of anything or anyone - Wikipedia is a tertiary source and as such reports only what other primary and secondary sources have already reported. If material is not covered in other sources it does not belong here.
Wikipedia does not have "personal pages" - it has articles about notable subjects. For people the guidelines are at WP:BIO. If you think that you or any of the others qualify you can request an article at WP:RA. I would advise you not to create any such articles yourself as we strongly discourage autobiographies and articles written by users with a conflict of interest.
I hope this helps.--ukexpat (talk) 12:40, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Do Not Tell Our Campaign What to Do - WE are after the truth !!

Peter Seabrook is not the "rags to riches" story you are trying to present. Members of the wider Seabrook family want to know how thier names were used during the John Lennon saga via contacts in Essex conservative Society such as Chapman Pincher and ex-communicated relative Roy Bold of Chelmsford Conservatives

Do not instruct us what to do — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seabrook.Ellis (talkcontribs) 08:37, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I did actually think about whether I should point out that one of them (or both) dropped the other in 2002/03. And, that she has become a Two-star rank officer, ten years later, is probably not such an issue for his article. So, ok. Except, she did not revert her name to Burt, either after the divorce or on her re-marriage. So, is that interesting or important? Mmmm. - Peter Ellis - Talk 15:58, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

WFNX Ad Nauseum

My apologies, Ukexpat, for ascribing action to you that were not yours. I should have looked before I leaped to conclusions. When, speaking for former WFNX staffers, I said "we feel a certain ownership" over the WFNX page, I didn't mean that to be taken literally. Metaphysically, perhaps. Emotionally, most definitely. I don't expect you to understand. You would have had to have worked there.

However, the situation, from my position is completely Kafkaesque. I previously listed some of my bona fides so I hope you realize I am not a crank. But by in some way having "Notable former on-air staff" = "Only Former WFNX On-Air Staff With Wikipedia Pages" is embarrassing. That's not a shot at you or Wikipedia or it's policies. It's embarrassing to those of us who worked there.

As previously stated I have no desire to have a Wikipedia page. I'm certainly not going to write & post my own page. You'd have to know me to understand. I've never be one to seek glory or thump my chest. But do know there is a whole history of the past thirty years or more yet to be written, isn't available online to link to or is hidden behind a pay wall that Wikipedia is blind to. It's Wikipedia's biggest weakness.

I won't write you again.

Mel Smith's Date of Death

Hi Ukexpat,

I am confused as to why you have reverted back to 19th July as according to BBC News he died today (20th), NOT yesterday (19th) aged 60!

GOCE July 2013 news report

Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

William Nicholas Gomes

Dear Ukexpat, could you please take a look to this article William Nicholas Gomes. I have seen that you were nominate this article for deletion long ago[1]. Still now that is a self promoting article with self published reference. I think it has no notability to be in wikipedia. Could you please manage time to start a discussion to delete this article? Thank you.--FreemesM (talk) 02:40, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

PLNDR article

Dear Ukexpat, I notice that you flagged the entry for PLNDR as spam. The page in its form was modeled after similar pages such as JackThreads, NastyGal and including the parent company Karmaloop - The entry is in no way to promote but to outline the company and it's history. If you could please inform me what specific information leads you to believe it is promotional I would be glad to fix them. Thank you. Pbetts11 (talk) 17:40, 22 July 2013 (UTC).

Basically it reads like something you would find on the company's website. Examples: Selkoe recruited the business minded and ambitious Leandrew Robinson to create PLNDR; Selkoe and Robinson tag teamed Karmaloop’s unique initial inventory and along with a seasoned buying team, managed to build relationships with top brands.; PLNDR.com is celebrated as a company that perpetually rewards its customers.; In March of 2012 PLNDR rounded up the foremost editors, bloggers, and style gurus in New York City’s urban fashion and style scene. It's not just the words though, the whole tone smacks of advertising.--ukexpat (talk) 18:01, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

-- SuggestBot (talk) 23:55, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Reverting articles

Dear UKExpat, can you please stop reverting articles? There are many articles that do not have any bibliographical information or any information available in the encyclopedia. The reverting of articles was not necessary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by EuropeanHistory2011 (talkcontribs) 15:56, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

It was necessary, please read WP:SEEALSO.--ukexpat (talk) 16:00, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Deep anger and upset

Excuse me, stop reverting articles on this page and others. I contacted Wikipedia and they are going to ban you for your behavior and they do not think anything is wrong with having a name without a biography on the page or an article without any information. Stop what you are doing now. It is against the law! — Preceding unsigned comment added by EuropeanHistory2011 (talkcontribs) 16:42, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

I have attempted to discuss this with you rationally but you appear unwilling to do so. Adding a reference to yourself on your ancestor's page is gratuitous and unencyclopedic. If you are notable and if someone writes an article about you, then maybe it would be OK.--ukexpat (talk) 16:48, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
