TBAN update

[edit]

Hi Isento, I was just informed that my original notification about your Beyonce topic ban contained an error. It stated that the ban was 3 months expiring on 6 March---which is actually only two months after the start. To resolve this, we're going to keep the expiration date I gave and shorten the restriction to 2 months. The interaction bans remain unchanged and are still indefinite. Let me know if you have any questions. Wug·a·po·des 20:20, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Quote box on So Beautiful or So What

[edit]

I don't understand your concerns with the quote box when set to a 25em width. This is a perfectly normal width for content (like images, sound sample boxes, quote boxes, etc) that is set next to article prose. You say 25em "renders too slim and difficult to read on mobile view", but I'm not sure if are referring to the quote box being too slim or the article text being too slim. In any case, at a 25em width, the quote box should render nearly identically on all screen sizes and orientations because that's how em-widths work (it's the article content that will have the most variation in width). To try to understand your concerns, I looked at my 25em revision on several devices and orientations:

  • On my Galaxy Tab A tablet:
    • In landscape orientation, the quote box takes up roughly 33% of the page and the text goes across 9 lines.
    • In portrait orientation, the quote box takes up roughly 50% of the page and the text goes across the same 9 lines.
  • On my Galaxy S10 phone:
    • In landscape orientation, the quote box takes up roughly 55% of the page and the text goes across 9 lines.
    • In portrait orientation, the quote box takes up 100% of the page (since it is standard for hardcoded widths to be ignored in phone portrait layout) and the text goes across 10 lines.
  • On desktop:
    • On my 1920 x 1080 monitor, the quote box takes up 25% of the page and the text goes across 9 lines.

In all cases, a 25em width looks more than fine, and is nearly identical (if not better) in many scenarios to 50% width on tablet and phone. However, the 50% width has the drawback of rendering very poorly on desktop, since it takes up far more space than necessary from the article prose. If you have specific concerns about how the quote box template renders on mobile devices in a specific orientation... well, that would not be unique to the So Beautiful or So What article, and instead should be something to bring up on the template page itself. So, can you elaborate on what your concern is? Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 19:24, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for this advice, @Y2kcrazyjoker4:. I've updated the quote boxes in my -- loosely speaking -- own articles. How do they look to you, at Agharta (album) and New York Dolls (album), for instance? isento (talk) 07:33, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry to tell you this, but I think you're going to have to delete your "inspirational verses" page. Those lyrics are all copyright violations. Mo Billings (talk) 22:20, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's probably ok if you cut them down to one verse or just a few lines. The poems should all be in public domain so they are fine. It's probably easiest to make a new page. The old page needs to be deleted for copyright reasons, though. Blanking is not enough. 00:20, 25 February 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mo Billings (talkcontribs)

Okay. I've reduced them and asked an administrator to delete the revision history. isento (talk) 08:06, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Christgau to Christgau's Record Guide

[edit]

Hello. Thanks for all your many edits. I love Christgau as well, and have read all of his books, aside from Book Reports. I'm just curious about your decision to change Christgau to, for example, Christgau's Record Guide in the ratings box. I don't particularly care, although, since he only rewrote 25% of the reviews for the book, why not go back to the original Voice columns, if you feel the need to change things? That sounds more snarky that I intend--I'm really just curious. Thanks. Caro7200 (talk) 22:57, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For consistency's sake. All scores in ratings boxes are attributed to publications rather than authors. And sometimes the original Voice column isn't available online, or the ratings box is entirely made up of retrospective reviews, so attributing the book instead would make it consistent with that aspect. isento (talk) 00:49, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the honorable mention stars are novel to the 90s Consumer Guide book. So having that title instead of Christgau's name would give the reader contextual information if they went to the book's article. isento (talk) 04:52, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 15, 2021, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

Am I misreading this edit or did you add a reference from 1906 to a section about gender differences? Mo Billings (talk) 02:36, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the Confucius quote is definitely earlier than 1906. isento (talk) 05:36, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There are good reasons to cite references that are over 100 years old in psychology or sociology articles, but it should be made clear that they are historical and not modern viewpoints. Your edit did not make that clear at all. Please be careful using these kinds of references or your edits might appear to be deliberately misleading. Thanks. Mo Billings (talk) 23:25, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry if I wasn't clear. I meant that sources from 1906 would be appropriate in an article about the history of psychology and how views on gender differences have changed over time. Not in a section about modern views on a psychology or sociology subject. Cherry-picking references to support your beliefs is a bad idea. Mo Billings (talk) 17:09, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't recall saying what my beliefs are. Nor do I recall the section being titled modern views on those subjects... isento (talk) 17:10, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hanging Tree Guitars

[edit]

Robert Christgau's top-ranked album for 2020. Here's the review:

A dozen solo or near-solo blues, gospel, and blues/gospel recordings dating back as far as 1991 not counting the Glorifying Vine Sisters’ 1977 “Get Ready,” most featuring guitars crafted by North Carolina luthier Freeman Vines that include some from black walnut that had its literal roots in a lynching tree. Not only do all of these distinct Southern Black performers sound like they’ve long since internalized the sounds they make with their stalwart voices and dexterous hands, but from “Slavery Time Blues” to “Amazing Grace” almost all sing of injustice as if it’s been on their minds their entire lives. Harsh or crooning, solo or unison, the music is occasionally embellished with modest piano or driven by drums, but voices and guitars prevail. Try the explicit opener “Slavery Time Blues” or the gospel-sweet lost-love “Clock on the Wall,” a slow and keening “John Henry” or a fare-thee-well “Amazing Grace” so rough-hewn you’ll play it again to make sure that was the song you just heard. And if you're like me you'll also want to read the eloquent as well as beautiful book that complements this perfectly timed project. All these citizens are set on telling the world how much their lives matter.

Here's the album in YouTube-playlist form, since it's obscure as fuck anywhere else. isento (talk) 05:58, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question regarding how to include a documentary reference in an article

[edit]

Hi there!

So I've been working on Elephant 6 for a couple months now, and something that I haven't gotten around to doing is mentioning the documentary about Elephant 6. Apparently it has a lot of good information about the collective and I'd watch it except right now I don't think it's physically possible for me to watch it. You see, the documentary is only on VHS and you need to schedule a viewing party in one of the major US cities, which I don't live in. Anyway, I'm only trying to get the article to GA so I don't think including info from the documentary is necessary (although it'd probably be necessary for FA), but I'd like to at least mention it's existence, like in a further reading section for books. Should I make a see also further reading section even though it's a documentary? Famous Hobo (talk) 23:49, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah! Do it. There's a citation template available for video sources --> Template:Cite AV media. That'd work. isento (talk) 03:42, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So something like this? Famous Hobo (talk) 16:16, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that looks fine. isento (talk) 00:20, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Agharta (album)

[edit]

I appreciate that I didn't get the reference links to work properly, can you please help me format them? (And re: "plosin"'s blog, I don't think his educational background invalidates his expertise on this topic... do you disagree?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr.skim (talkcontribs) 15:02 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi. I don't really know what his expertise on Miles Davis is, but for the particular topic you were editing, there already exists the viewpoint you were attributing to Plosin and from a bona fide expert in Paul Tingen at that. I don't see the point in repeating the same thing from a lesser source in a featured article, which is expected to rely on high-quality sources. And I don't see Plosin as high-quality or essential here. isento (talk) 00:10, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Progressive soul

[edit]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Progressive soul you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Your GA nomination of Progressive soul

[edit]

The article Progressive soul you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Progressive soul for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. How's it going?

[edit]

Hi Isento, how have you been? I hope you're well. I stumbled on your inspirational verses page because I used this photo [[1]] in the article I'm working on right now, and I happened to look where else it was used. Coincidentally the Dylan lyric you quoted is actually my all-time favourite of his lyrics too. I think the "I've been meek and hard like an oak" and "everything about you is bringing me misery" verses are my favourite bits but the whole song is wonderful. Cool, take care! Moisejp (talk) 07:51, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! And I love both songs. Great work on that one! isento (talk) 01:47, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Sorry, you'll have to keep putting up with reverting, since you refuse (unlike anyone else at WP) to let "singer-songwriter" stand as unlinked. So it remains on the list. It would be simpler just to unlink that one item; then it won't be on the list. Tony (talk) 03:24, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

But what of the notion (as described here by @JG66:) that it is contextually significant enough to be linked? isento (talk) 10:23, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It does seem pretty relevant to what's being discussed at Love for Sale (Bilal album)#Writing and recording ... isento (talk) 10:24, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Tom Hull (critic)

[edit]

The article Tom Hull (critic) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Tom Hull (critic) for issues which need to be addressed. MBDTF & WTT Edits

[edit]

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: I offered the correct information it’s even within the sales post. Of the 720,000 copies sold in the first week, 496,000 were physical CDs and 224,000 were digital downloads.

Watch the Throne: 757,000 copies sold in the first week, 436,000 were physical CDs and 321,000 were digital downloads.

What’s the difference between what I did and what was done here? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speak_Now#Commercial_performance

The digital sales contributed to the million sold for this album are noted, so why is it not the case for those 2 albums I accurately updated? If this is the case her should say “769,000 copies it’s in first week of release.” Not “1,047,000”. Marikomorose (talk) 18:30, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The issue with your changes is that they revised a sales figure that had been verified by the citation alongside it, instead replacing it with numbers you still have not explained how you came across. If you read them somewhere reliable, please let me know where and perhaps I can restore your changes along with a citation to the new source. Piotr Jr. (talk) 18:55, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and apologies.

[edit]

@Piotr Jr: Hey man, I was looking through my contributions history and remembered the stupid edit I made when I added Fantano's score of The Big Day, and then had the fucking nerve to question you about it. As I grow to understand Wikipedia more and more, I realize my mistake and I was way out of line. I know this is late, but thanks for explaining it to me politely. And apologies for initiating the confrontation. Cheers. Mattevt (talk) 04:40, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey buddy. I don't remember this, but I'm glad to hear you've matured as an editor here. Anyway, enjoy the day, and listen to the album! Fantano might've needed some industrial-strength scouring pads to clean out his ears when he reviewed it :p Piotr (talk) 15:00, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request for feedback

[edit]

Hi Piotr Jr., how are you? I know I haven't been very good about reviewing your articles in the past, but since you mentioned you're a fan of this song, I wondered if you might possibly like to give feedback at Wikipedia:Peer review/I'm Goin' Down/archive1. If you don't have time or would rather not, no worries! Thanks, take it easy. Moisejp (talk) 04:10, 4 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

WP:REFUND question

[edit]

Hello, Piotr Jr.,

I saw all of your requests at WP:REFUND and I have to ask, why did you request all of these User space pages to be deleted a few weeks ago, only to ask for them to be restored now? This seems like a waste of effort on admin's part, both to delete these pages and now to restore them all, and no one wants to restore all of these pages if you will request that they be deleted again in the near future. Are you sure that you want these pages now? Liz Read! Talk! 06:55, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Crisis of conscience. But, yep, restore. Piotr Jr. (talk) 06:57, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Liz:, I should add that I'm ignorant of what effort and process it takes to restore the pages, but given this warning, I'll be more mindful going forward. Thanks. 🙏 Piotr Jr. (talk) 03:29, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tumbling Dice PR

[edit]

Hi Piotr Jr., I was wondering if you may be able to take a look at Wikipedia:Peer review/Tumbling Dice/archive4 and offer any feedback? I'd love to take "Tumbling Dice" to FA soon. If not, no worries. Thank you for your time. --TheSandDoctor Talk 02:42, 5 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm drunk right now. Looks like a great article though, on its way ... Piotr Jr. (talk) 05:54, 5 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
