Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Teddy pendegrass.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Polly (Parrot) 20:35, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Teddy pendegrass.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Teddy pendegrass.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 04:41, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Fulfillingness' First Finale album cover.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 15:44, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:'58 Miles.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:'58 Miles.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Disputed fair use rationale for $1

[edit]

Thank you for uploading $1. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Gamaliel (talk) 21:01, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is still a copyright violation even if you move around some words and cite your source. For instance, the Dan Epstein review says:

"A classic jazz album that--despite the fact that the material has been rendered almost overly familiar due to countless interpretations--still sounds remarkably fresh four decades after its initial release. Miles' soft yet piercing trumpet style is perfectly suited to Gershwin's melancholy melodies, Evans' musical direction of his 18-piece orchestra is impeccable, and their version of "Summertime" may well be the finest ever waxed."

While you write:

"Miles' soft yet piercing trumpet style under Evans' musical direction of his 18-piece orchestrais is greatly suited to Gershwin's melancholy melodies. Critics see the album as a classic which is more of a reinvention rather than an interpration of the opera and that still sounds remarkably, fresh four decades after its initial release"

All you've done here is taken a few words out, put some in, and rearranged things. I'm sorry, this is simply unacceptable. If you like Epstein's turn of phrase, then quote it, but don't rearrange his words and stick them in Wikipedia. That's stealing, and we simply can't allow that. Wikipedia is here to generate original content.

If you have any questions about our policies, see Wikipedia:Copyrights or ask me for clarification. Until you are clear what is and what is not acceptable, I have to insist that you stop including material that is pasted together from different reviews and to remove any such material you have added to Wikipedia. Civility

See WP:CIVIL. Please don't refer to editing disputes as acts of "vandalism", as you did in this edit summary. Please treat other editors with respect and try to discuss your edits with them. You don't ever appear to have used the talk page for anything at all, try employing it. If you have any questions, please let me know by replying to this message here. Thank you. Gamaliel (talk) 19:57, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your apology in this edit summary. You'll find other editors are generally easy to get along with if you discuss things with them in a civil manner. Please try using this page and the article talk pages to respond to the concerns of other users. You can reach the talk page for a particular article by clicking on the discussion tab.

As for the issue of the quote boxes, these are generally inappropriate for an encyclopedia. Encyclopedias do not use pull quotes in such a manner, they are generally more formal and reserved in tone. Also, the quotes you have selected are from relatively insignificant reviewers (as opposed to a noted critic like Dave Marsh or Robert Christgau, for example) and they are generally free of significant content. A pull quote from an itunes review telling us that this is a great album does not aid the reader in any significant way. Gamaliel (talk) 20:12, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit warring

[edit]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Porgy and Bess (Miles Davis album). Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution. --Ave Caesar (talk) 20:19, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewing your own articles

[edit]

Hi, Dan. I'm afraid that this really isn't done. You may not reassess yourself an article in which you've been involved. Also, you should not overwrite other people's comments, as you did here, but add new ones at the end. I have restored my comments and left a note concurring with your assessment. But in the future, please request a reassessment from others in the project rather than reassessing the article yourself. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 01:38, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All three articles have been assessed for quality, although, again, this is not something you should do for yourself. If you want grading on the importance scale, I suggest you ask for it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums. This is not a commonly done assessment, and it is very unlikely that the contributors who typically provide this will see your request for importance assessment where it is placed, as this is usually for quality assessments only. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 02:01, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA asssessment

[edit]

Hi, Dan. If you want to request an assessment of an article by the GA criteria, you're welcome to list it as described at Wikipedia:Good articles. Again, please do not change the ratings of articles to which you've contributed. If you'd like to discuss this further, I'd be more than happy to talk about it with you. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:43, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Editing reviews

[edit]

Hi Dan. I see you have been changing links to reviews in Pink Floyd album articles, and probably others, to change "All Music Guide" to "Allmusic", and at the same time, removing links to Yahoo reviews. There must be thousands of references to "All Music Guide" on WP, and it's going to take a long time to find and change them all. This is a task that should be done by a bot. There is no immediate need to change it, because the link to the former "All Music Guide" page on WP redirects correctly to "Allmusic". My first thought on seeing your changes, is that maybe you work for Allmusic, and are in a hurry to change its name for marketing reasons, and can't wait for a bot to be set up to do it. I don't know if that's true, but since it looks like it could be, then it also looks bad that you are deleting links to one of Allmusic's competitors. It may be that you are just removing the Yahoo links because you don't like their reviews. This is not a good reason for removing them. The only real legitimate reason for removing a review link to an established, non-blacklisted site, is if the link is dead, and as far as I can see, this is not the case. I strongly recommend that you not change Allmusic's brand name and delete Yahoo links in the same edit, because it looks like a conflict of interest problem. I would also ask that you use the edit summary feature to explain why you are removing review links when you do so. If you do work for Allmusic, it's not a problem that you are changing their name, but it's still much better to request a change via bot, and I don't think it would be a problem if that request were made by someone who works for Allmusic (or doesn't). --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 15:04, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Use of cruftbox

[edit]

Dan, recently you removed a section on The Joshua Tree with the note 'rm cruftbox'. As the proprietor of cruftbox dot com, a vanity RSS feed showed me your edit. While I completely understand your usage of the term, your usage did bring a tear to my eye. It pains me to see my exceedingly well know brand, cruftbox, to be associated with the frothy, nonsense prose you removed. I beesech you to find a term other than cruftbox to refer to such removals. Otherwise, Sir, it will be pistols at dawn. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Argyle (talkcontribs) 21:43, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Dan. I'm not sure why you blanked this page. I have restored the contents, in keeping with Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. While users are free to remove others' comments from their own talk pages, we don't remove comments from article talk pages (except in certain situations, such as where they violate copyright or or biographies of living persons policy) unless we are archiving them, which we do when they reach a certain length. This one doesn't seem to require archiving yet. If there is a good reason to remove those, please let me know. You might wish to consider consistently using edit summaries, as these are very useful in helping other editors collaborate with us by giving insight into our actions. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:00, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Image:Scott-Heron and Jackson in the studio.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Scott-Heron and Jackson in the studio.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.  Channel ®   11:43, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cut & paste moves

[edit]

Hi, Dan. There's a problem with the work that you did at 1958 Miles. It appears that you recently tried to give '58 Miles Featuring Stella by Starlight a different title by copying its content and pasting it into 1958 Miles. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is not a good idea because it splits the page history which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Wikipedia's contributors do not release rights to their contributions completely, but retain the right to authorship credit. When you copy their work elsewhere, you break the link to their contributions. This is why our software has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else.

I'll work on repairing this one, although with its extensive edit history I may need the assistance of a developer. But if there are any other articles that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen so that they can be repaired. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 23:58, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Penguin Guide

Hello, this occurred a while back, but I'm genuinely curious as to why you would characterize a review from The Penguin Guide to Jazz as "not a referenced or reliable rating" (link). In this case, the review was (and is) cited in the article text. I continue to cite from Penguin so I was compelled to ask. Thanks, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 23:08, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Dan. When you request assessments, you've been moving the example and, presumably, personalizing it for yourself. (Here.) Please don't do that. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Otis Redding

[edit]

Hey there, I just came across Category:Otis Redding, which you recently created. Seeing as you're obviously a major Redding fan, I thought you might like to set up and populate an additional sub-cat, Category:Songs written by Otis Redding, which would also be part of Category:Songs by songwriter. The reason this is important is because Category:Otis Redding will probably be deleted before too long unless it has that third sub-cat to justify its existence. (Categories like this, with too few sub-cats, are regularly deleted at WP:CFD.) Regards, Cgingold (talk) 11:33, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Coltrane for Lovers

[edit]

The article Coltrane for Lovers you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold. It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Coltrane for Lovers for things needed to be addressed. Edit summaries

[edit]

Hi, would you mind using edit summaries please, it helps justify your argument for your edit and helps others make sense of what your edit is. Cheers. — Realist2 22:08, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on off the wall, I will add, if you are planning to get the article to WP:GA, you are going to have to replace current ref #1 (the web link to allmichaeljackson), it isn't a reliable source. However you should be able to replace them with other sources in that article and/or sources from the Michael Jackson article. The MJ article is excellent, every source used there is considered reliable, it's a gold mine on usual, reliable info on Jackson. The MJ article has a lot of info on Off the Wall already in it, use some of it if you like. — Realist2 03:43, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You also need to cut the credits so that they are displayed in a similar fashion to this. I'm trying to help you, I've let you copy all the work "I" did on the Michael Jackson article, fixed your broken links, if you would be more friendly we could really make this a great article. — Realist2 06:24, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Marvin Gaye article...

[edit]

Hey, Dan, I noticed your brilliant work on Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On page. Can I bring attention to the Marvin Gaye page, which I'm trying to edit with the right sources so it'll look good enough to be a "featured article"? It's in some difficulties in some errors, if you can, please add your input into editing the entire article. I really appreciate it. You can either talk to me or you can talk to my good friend, Realist2 about what to do for the article. Add more discussion to the Talk:Marvin Gaye page if you're interested. Reference citations

[edit]

If you don't mind, I could take one of the articles and put a few template citations in. You could always revert it if you don't like it. Templates are not required, but using a template is an easy way of insuring all the relevant information is there and consistent. What do you think? —Mattisse (Talk) 16:56, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I cleaned up a few problems in the references in Let's Get It On and they are fine, so not to worry. Probably the other articles are the same, so there is no problem. Sorry for the alarm. —Mattisse (Talk) 18:58, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA for Let's Get It On - my only hold up

My only hold up is the Reference section. I added a reference for Divided Soul - the only one I could find. You have another reference in there. Please choose one or the other. Made sure each reference is bulleted and in the same format. —Mattisse (Talk) 13:51, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So is this correct? The liner notes contain essays by Ritz, Townsend, Edmonds, and Weinger, as well as excerpts from Divided Soul? —Mattisse (Talk) 14:23, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Dan56! I see that the article has already passed a GA review from August, so it doesn't need another review! If you would like more feedback for the article, I suggest that you send the article over to Peer Review, which I'm doing for an article that I myself recently heavily worked on, No Jacket Required! I took it from a barely any info article to getting it passed as a GA! Of course, it's not as excellent as your articles, but I did my best! ;) I suggest you put your article through a Peer Review, in which multiple members will look at the article and point it any sort of comments, or if it needs any improvements! I also have something else to ask you about, are you a fan of the band Earth, Wind & Fire? Thanks and have a nice day! CarpetCrawler (talk) 20:04, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. BJBot (talk) 06:29, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! I'd certainly love to do the review, but right now I have laptop troubles, so my time on Wiki is limited. However, if I get my laptop fixed by the middle of the week, I'll certainly go and take a look at the article (Although I invite anyone else tpo review it if they'd like!) Just have a quick question: Do you like Earth, Wind & Fire? CarpetCrawler (talk) 23:41, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, well I am a huge fan of them, and am thinking about heavily improving the article to That's the Way of the World which is their best work, in my opinion. I would like to know if you'd like to co-colloborate on the article, so that we can improve it to B-class or Good Article level. Right now I can't do it, because my laptop is being junky to me, but I can certainly get to work on it as soon as the laptop gets fixed. I would love to work on the article with you. And if you don't want to, that's OK, don't worry about it! CarpetCrawler (talk) 23:52, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks anyway! CarpetCrawler (talk) 14:25, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I noticed you reverted a number of fixes I made, which were done to bring the article more in line with WP:ALBUM, etc. Could you explain why? —Zeagler (talk) 01:46, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Track listing should include CD reissue, with the changed lengths and bonus tracks. Greatest Hits was the previous release before Riot, not Stand!. WikiLinks I reverted, such as photomontage and black & white, are helpful for understanding of the article info. Dan56 (talk) 02:04, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the changes I'd suggest be reinstated (and why):
  • remove breaks, parentheses and small text in "Recorded" section of infobox per example at WP:ALBUM#Infobox
  • remove catalog number in "Label" section of infobox per WP:ALBUM#Label
  • remove Warr.org entry in "Professional Reviews" section of infobox per 10-review limit at WP:ALBUM#Professional reviews (I chose the one I believe to be the least reputable)
  • reinstate Stand! in the chronology, as compilations are not included per WP:ALBUM#Chronology
  • remove the "Original LP" heading. It doesn't need to be specified because the information is assumed to refer to the original version unless stated otherwise.
  • now that you've added the explanation about the time of "There's a Riot Goin' On", I'm fine with repeating the entire track listing. Without that anomaly, I'd say list only the bonus tracks.
  • the heading "Additional personnel" is used elsewhere to categorize musical contributions by non-bandmembers, so I'd remove it and categorize the artists/photogs under "Production"
Any objections? —Zeagler (talk) 02:18, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It look fine the way it is right now. Dan56 (talk) 19:56, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's not a compelling reason to deviate from established standards and practices. Opinions will differ about what's most visually pleasing, but unless there's a specific reason that this page looks better when done your way while the rest look better when following WP:ALBUM, that's an issue to bring up at that WikiProject. Editors of album pages look to featured and good articles to see best practices in action, and deviations based solely on what one editor finds visually pleasing will leave this encyclopedia without congruity. That said, there may be a case for your version...I'd just like to hear you make it. —Zeagler (talk) 20:11, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The infobox on the WikiAlbum page is just an example. It doesn say nuthin bout parentheses or breaks
  • That's technically true, but what's the compelling reason to deviate? Especially since I object and therefore consensus no longer exists?
  • How is the information assumed to refer to original version?

Dan56 (talk) 20:26, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • By the "Side one" and "Side two" subheadings, and that versions that differ from the original are specifically named and explained. (Thanks for acknowledging the "Chronology" and "Professional Reviews" issues.) —Zeagler (talk) 20:59, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:Solange promo.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Solange promo.jpg.

Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? MilborneOne (talk) 22:51, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why not

It just seems clumsy. Try reading it out loud. Flowerparty 01:10, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:UntitledMV.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Article assessment

[edit]

I don't know much about that - WP:ASSESS looks like the place to start. JohnCD (talk) 18:15, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for adding the samples. I tried searching that site before, but it wouldn't show anything for "Eric B." or "Rakim". About the infobox, it's ok to put modern reviews even if the album is a different edition, but magazine lists like Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums shouldn't be added - see WP:ALBUM#Professional reviews. Also, I removed the MusicHound link because there's unfortunately no link to the actual review. Spellcast (talk) 19:52, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:MyGirlotiscover.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:MyGirlotiscover.jpg.

Hip hop history

[edit]

Excellent job the new school hip hop article. Thanks for the great work. Old school hip hop and origins of hip hop are still not good articles, though. If you would direct your expertise towards those many people would appreciate it. Cosprings (talk) 19:04, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Please don't forget to provide an edit summary for your edits. Also, please read WP:ALBUM#Professional reviews and understand that XXL doesn't use stars in its reviews, so we shouldn't use stars for XXL reviews either.
