GA Review

[edit]
  • What this figure all about: "CL 1268"?
  • "along with the Milestones sessions" I think this is a bit detailed. Maybe you can mention this below?
  • "the album was reissued on compact disc in 1991" What was the format of the initial release?
  • "The sessions for the album, along with the Milestones sessions, were seen as elemental in Davis' transition from hard bop to the modal style of jazz and were viewed as precursors to his most well-known work, Kind of Blue." Maybe you can merge this to the first paragraph? The second para, I think, is more on releases and reissues.
  • This article has lots of quotations. Please cut them down because of copy vio issues and leave those very relevant and important.
  • "Davis began using this stylistic approach with his sextet" you mean Davis is one of the sextet? As enumerated, it lacks one.
  • "Davis' critically acclaimed collaboration with Gil Evans" Does being critically acclaimed have to do with Davis' experimentation? And who said it was critically acclaimed?
  • "Following the historic" who said it was historic?
  • "an incident occurred between Davis and Garland when he" he is referring to Garland or Davis? Also, is there more specific term than incident?
  • "Bill Evans was hired by Davis for his rich precision and ability to understate the piano's solo voice" who said this? Davis compliment to Evans?
  • "While Davis was fascinated and favorable of the new sound Evans brought and the challenges it inspired" to whom Evan brought this new sound? Who and/or what was challenged?
  • "Evans' unique piano sound" Who said it was unique?
  • "and a live gig" I think gig is not encyclopedic in tone.
  • "whimsical "Fran Dance", named after Davis' wife Francis,[2] the romantic "Stella By Starlight", and the jumping "Love for Sale"" Whimsical, romantic, and jumping are all point of view.
  • "The sessions were also notable for featuring Coltrane's unique improvisational style," Again, who said it was unique
  • ""Stella by Starlight" featured Evans' delicate" any word than delicate. It sounds POV
  • ""Stella by Starlight" featured Evans' delicate and sparse introduction made Coltrane's early solo seem so startling. Evans lush and laconic solo, however, suggested the bittersweet spell he would cast over the Kind of Blue sessions the following year." Same through with this. Lots of adjectives that seem POVic.
  • " The Sonny Rollins-penned "Oleo" followed along at a wild Paul Chambers bass tempo, as Evans' fluid orchestral piano technique suggested multiple key centers and modal impressions. In contrast to the high tempos and improvisation of the other live tunes, "My Funny Valentine" was stately and serene, as Coltrane and Adderley sit out, giving Evans and Davis a more meditative backdrop for sensitive soloing. Evans displayed his soft and sensitive piano style. His unique and challenging sound was one of the reasons Miles Davis had hired him following Philly Joe's departure. The late-night languor of "My Funny Valentine", along with Bill Evans' presence and the more consistent and improving sextet, would hint at the music later featured on Davis' next album, the 1959 jazz masterpiece Kind of Blue."
    • Who is Rollins and words like wild, fluid, sensitive, unique, challenging, jazz masterpiece and some other adjectives/words are POVic and very unspecific.
  • Who is Ira Gitler and Nicholas Taylor?
  • "the '58 Sessions chronicled the transition from the brawny agitation of Milestones, to the cerebral tranquility of Kind of Blue." Again, POVic terms like "brawny agitation" and "cerebral tranquility" are to be avoided.
  • "presence helped make the band became a more powerful sextet" Again, POV term like powerful
  • "Davis' spontaneous ability in the studio to simplify complicated musical structures." POV
  • "his 1959 magnum opus, Kind of Blue" again, same issue
  • Was their critical reviews of this album? Contemporary reviews?
  • How about its commercial performance?

This article's major problem is POV but I will put this on hold for seven days. After which, I'll decide whether to pass or fail base on the improvements. Thank you. --Efe (talk) 00:39, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The on hold is over and I am failing this GAN. I think there are still lots of things to do with the article. If you feel the review was an error, please pass this for reassessment. Thank you. --Efe (talk) 07:19, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong release date, wrong image, wrong article

[edit]

Much of the information given in this article is entirely inaccurate. The original album was "Jazz Track." The reissue is "1958 Miles." The image given is a Japanese compilation -- not a US release from 1958. [1]

The track sequence is taken from "'58 Sessions," which was not released until 1991. [2]

The catalog numbering system for Columbia in 1958 was CL (Mono) and CS (Stereo), so SL-1958 does not exist. The catalog number for "Jazz Track" is CL/CS 1268.

The AllMusicGuide citation given for "1958 Miles" is also incorrect. A look at the release tab on that page reveals that the earliest release is 1997. [3]

Finally, clicking on the citation for SL-1268 reveals that no release year is given for the item on that page (it is number 159), while other items have release years. [4]

"1958 Miles" is a compilation, not an official album. As a result, this article should be rewritten and changed to "'58 Sessions." Infamous30 (talk) 08:45, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
