Hi Shalor. I haven't bothered you in awhile, so hope you're doing well. Perhaps you can help this student editor with their non-free content issues. Currently, it's just a case of WP:NFCC#9 so it's not too big a deal; however, after looking at their sandbox, there's probably no real way to justify that type of non-free content use even if it was an article. They can, of course, link to the article about the product if they want if their draft is approved, but again there's no real contextual justification (at least not at the moment) to use the file. Maybe there's a file from Commons that they can use instead for the same encyclopedic purpose? As always, thanks in advance for helping me with these student editors. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:39, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Yikes, what an ugly section title this generates! That huge, blue box is actually the section header, which is why it all shows up in the ToC as a giant section title. Maybe that template isn't designed to be embedded inside a heading. (pinging Doug Weller) Mathglot (talk) 21:26, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
@Mathglot: thanks, fixed it. Doug Weller talk 21:30, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Talk page lacking student assignment template

Hi Shalor, I notice that the Talk:Deaf culture page lacks the {{Wikied assignment}} banner I usually see there, when a student is editing on an assignment. I see that Coleman laura's course is Wiki Ed/George Washington University/AmWriting Fall 2018 M 75 and that the box next to her name is empty. Is that why it's not on the D.c. Talk page? Whose responsibility is it to 1) fill in the assignment column at the course page, and 2) to add the assignement template to the article TP? Adding Sage, who I think is interested in such issues as well. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 21:34, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Mathglot! Typically a student will assign themselves a page and Dashboard will automatically add the tag to the page. If they don't assign it to themselves on Dashboard, the tag would have to be manually added, which doesn't always happen. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:37, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
K, added it. Mathglot (talk) 21:50, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Deletion of page and other things

I understand that the page I created constitutes as "vandalism" and an "attack page". The creation of the page was not meant to serve as either of those things. I knew that creating the page would violate Wikipedias policy and that it would be easily deleted. I only created it to show my friend (humdan ahmed) how easy it was to create a page on wikipedia. This message is only to inform you that I was aware of the consequences, and that I apologize for doing it. Thank you.

Also, I would like to address the other edits I had made before. I knowingly made these edits since I knew they would be taken down quickly. I only went through with them because I needed to meet a quota of 10 edits to be able to edit an article that I actually need to edit. I will no longer make these kind of edits since I now have access to edit these pages. Sorry, and thank you again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Edgon55 (talkcontribs) 22:58, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher)@Edgon55:. I'm not associated with Wiki Ed so I'm not posting on behalf of anyone there or even on behalf of Shalor, but your post above is basically an admission of what is commonly referred to as being not here. If you continue to make these kinds of edits, you're going to quickly find yourself having problems with others and eventually the subject of discussion at one of the administrator noticeboards. Just like anyone else, you're expected to edit according to Wikipedia's various policies and guidelines.
It's OK to make mistakes, and other editors will be understanding when they happen. If those mistakes, however, start to become disruptive, then you'll quickly find that others are going to be less willing to write them off as a newbie error. While I understand part of the reason you might be editing probably has to do with it being a class assignment, you will not be given any special consideration because you're a student trying to get a good grade.
There are plenty of ways to be here for Wikipedia; so, if you want to boost your edit count for some reason, then make edits which actually improve the encyclopedia. That's the best way to ensure that you remain an editor in good standing and are a positive to the project. Editors who choose to be a negative by disrupting articles and causing others to devote time and energy to sorting out any messes left, often quickly find themselves on the outside looking in. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:35, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
  • I've copied this to your talk page to make sure that you see it and added in the context of your message. I want to second what Marchjuly said and emphasize that this can lead to a block. It's really, really, really heavily frowned upon to make these edits - even if you're doing them knowing that they will be removed or perhaps especially so, since you're setting out to be disruptive. Basically, think of it this way: you wouldn't vandalize something in real life because you know it's destructive and not a good use of time (plus you can get in trouble)- the same premise applies here. --Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:32, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Marchjuly Thank you for taking your time to advise me, I really appreciate it. I understand fully now that what I was doing was wrong. I won't be doing anything that violates wikipedia's policy anymore. I apologize for my newbie mistakes, I plan on actually being here to improve Wikipedia for my school project. Thanks again!

Hello.

I need help with...

I've underlined the writing that I added to Walker Percy's page. I also added a photograph that I want to include because his current page does not have one. I also made a major change to the structure because I thought that the life and career sections should go together as they share many aspects and influences. I modeled the new structure after Maya Angelou's page which is a featured article. I was wondering if you think the new structure is beneficial or should be left how it was originally? I also added an "Influence" subheading and information to follow which was not previously there. I was also wondering if you could read over what I have written to make sure the information is necessary and appropriately written for Wikipedia? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Help adding edit description

Hi there Shalor, I just did a fairly large edit to my assigned wiki article page (Banshees), but made a mistake while reviewing my changes and clicked "publish" before adding a description of the changes. Is there any way to go back and add a description? I want to be able to explain my work and make sure others working on the article don't get upset or assume my changes are bad. Thank you Scopes033 (talk) 17:19, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Scopes033 - you can't really go back and add an edit summary to the addition you made, but you can definitely still post to the article's talk page and give a general head's up there. That may actually be better, since you won't have to worry about trying to fit it into the letter/character limit for the edit summary. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:29, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

A barnstar for you.

Kevin Gorman Education Program Barnstar
For your tireless work in helping students and teachers to access Wikipedia (put you on my watchlist--sorry for stalking). You're very professional and stand out compared to most of the volunteer editors that I've interacted with as a new editor myself. Thanks for your hard work and keep leading by example! Sincerely, Shashi Sushila Murray, (message me) 21:39, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Thank you Shashi Sushila Murray! You don't know how nice it was to see this, especially after a day of working. Also, I absolutely don't mind you putting my talk page on your watchlist. I think it's definitely a good thing, since I highly encourage students to interact with other editors since it's part of the whole assignment and Wikipedia experience, plus helps teach them collaboration with people outside of their class. :) Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:56, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
I'm glad to hear it. I've been a (skeptical) reader of Wikipedia for years and finally decided to start editing after an alarming experience as an IP editor of what felt like bullying (indignation is very motivating). Since then I've taken so much time to read critiques of the weaknesses of this project (with a particular focus on demographics and consequent systemic bias), so people like you and a few others really stand out to me as those who are working against the lurching inertia of this project's problems. But in your case it's in a very direct and clear way that brings the project forward. I think that the material produced by Wiki Ed should be read by the other experienced editors. I also find it rewarding to provide feedback to the student editors, so I'll keep doing it. Is there a page I could subscribe to that lists their various efforts? Sincerely, Shashi Sushila Murray, (message me) 22:02, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Need help request from Bshoukeir24 (talk)

Hello! I need help with content of the sections in my sandbox for the British Sign Language Page. There was no content on those sections (phonology and grammar) except for one sentence each, and I'm no expert on the topic so I don't know if the content I have is a good start. I'm aware about how the citations should look on the page, but that isn't how they are in my sandbox at the moment. My main concern is the content. I'm not including all the details, and my goal is just to provide and over view of the two sections.

Your feed back would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

--Bshoukeir24 (talk) 21:45, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi and belated thanks for your help with this! I'm so sorry I've wound up quite tied up off-wiki lately and haven't properly had a chance to thank you. Really appreciate your assistance as always.

Imposing again because it won't be soon that I have enough time to engage the student myself, and this edit seems to suggest s/he needs really a lot of guidance about the basic genre of encyclopedia writing we're aiming for. I haven't reverted yet because this is the sort of topic I begin entries for rather specifically in hopes of encouraging participation by people who might be underrepresented in the editoriat. So I don't want to do anything that would discourage anyone! But I also haven't the time just now to onboard someone from scratch. I don't know if you might be able to help, whether talking to the student directly or being in touch with the instructor (I don't know if other students from the same class are having the same issues.)

Thanks so much Shalor! Innisfree987 (talk) 19:08, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Apologies

I am deeply sorry, I will not commit any sort of violations any longer. I intend on bettering a specific article and will follow all guidelines on how to make a proper edit according to the wikipedia's policy. I now understand the severity of my actions. Again, it was never my intention to be so disruptive and blatant, I didn't fully understand much on how wikipedia worked so I did what I did. Need help request from Eanderson304 (talk)

Hello.

I need help with...

I was editing my article and made some key changes. My computer shut down before I was able to save those changes to my sandbox. Is there any way I can get those back? I've been trying for over an hour and I need help please! The article must be uploaded tonight. If I am not able to do so, how can I get my sandbox out of "edit source" mode? Earlier it was just giving me the option to type on a normal wiki page without the coding template. How do I get back to that in my sandbox

--Eanderson304 (talk) 22:26, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Hi Eanderson304. If you saved a copy of what you were working on at the time to your computer's hard drive, then you should still have it somewhere there. If, however, your computer shut down before doing that, then I'm afraid that content is probably gone for ever. Whenever you "publish" something to a Wikipedia page, a record of it is saved in the page's history for attribution purposes; so, if you make some changes, click "Publish changes", make some more changes, click "publish changes", make some more changes and your then computer shuts down, there should be a record of the first two edits, but not the the third one. I don't believe Wikipedia has an automatic recover function like some word processing programs do in which you able to restore unsaved versions of whatever you're working on because it doesn't automatically make temporary backups as you're working on something.
I'm also not sure what you mean by the article must be uploaded to not. I'm assuming since you're a student, you mean your teacher set tonight as the deadline for submitting your work. However, if User:Eanderson304/sandbox is what we're talking about here, please don't move that to the article namespace as a stand-alone article because if you do there's a really good chance that it will be deleted or moved back to your sandbox before the sun rises tomorrow. Not trying to be too harsh, but you're draft has some formatting, sourcing, tone and even notability issues which probably need to be sorted out first. You might be better off asking your teacher to look at and assess your sandbox if you want them to check your work. Once you add anything to the article namespace, it will be there for anyone anywhere in the world to revise or even possibly nominate/tag for deletion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:49, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Thanks Marchjuly! I've left them some notes on their draft in the past but it looks like the issues are still applicable. If you have anything to add to my notes, to give them a second opinion of sorts or back up my notes, that would be awesome - I don't want to impose on you, though. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:29, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
    • Impose on me as much as you want, but I don't think I can improve on what you wrote. Moreover, I'm actually the real (im)poser for trying to answer a post left for you by someone else on your user talk. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:29, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi Shalor. I guess this must be your busy season for school projects. I came across NASCAR Winston Cup Series Era while checking on some more non-free images. I'm not very knowledgeable about NASCAR racing, but this kind of seems like content taken from various other articles and repackaged in a stand-alone article which might not actually be needed. I'm bring this to you because it appears to be the work of a couple of students you're helping. It seems the students might be part of the same class as #Need help request from Eanderson304 and are facing the same deadline. I understand from previous discussions that moving a article into the mainspace is part of the things required for some of these classes, but I'm not sure that's a really good idea. It might be a good idea to get some feedback from WP:NASCAR on this since the members of that WikiProject probably can best tell whether this deserves a stand-alone article. I was going to post something about this at WT:NASCAR, but that might lead to a quick and harsh response; so, I'd figured I'd see what you think first since you have already interacted with these students. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:13, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

I found a stray student editor (they've never been greeted by a Wiki Ed person etc.)

I should have brought this to your attention earlier, but I found a stray student editor a while back while browsing the tea house. Only now that I've looked through the greetings that you post on students' pages do I realize that they should probably be connected to some kind of student editor interface (the dashboard?). Their talk page and article page didn't indicate that they were a student editor (they're working on a draft right now and I added the class assignment notice on their talk page for them). I've pointed them in the direction of the tutorials, the Wiki Education noticeboard, and I've encouraged them to connect their professor with the right resources (hopefully their grading doesn't penalize them for being unsuccessful at violating Wikipedia's guidelines).

In the future would it be better for me to leave messages on the Education noticeboard? You're the only education liaison that I've seen so far, so this is where I knew to turn to help this student editor. Sincerely, Shashi Sushila Murray, (message me) 05:57, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

After reading the noticeboard guidelines I went ahead and started a conversation there as well, so that more eyes can see that this student needs some help: Wikipedia:Education_noticeboard#A_stray_student_editor_who_has_never_been_greeted_by_a_Wiki_Ed_liaison. Sincerely, Shashi Sushila Murray, (message me) 06:03, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the head's up Shashi Sushila Murray! Offhand I don't see where she's connected to a specific course already running with us, so we'll have to watch and see if they passes this along to her instructor or if they do something that identifies the university so that we can better try to find the instructor and reach out to them. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:18, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
@Shashi Sushila Murray: Without speaking for Wiki Ed, I can just say that if you spot a new editor that doesn't have a welcome notice yet, just go ahead and add one. You don't need to wait for anyone to give you a green light to add a welcome notice, irrespective of whether the new editor is part of a course or not. I've added hundreds of them; you can too, if you want. You'll find a list of welcome notices to choose from at WP:WT. Cordially, Mathglot (talk) 06:55, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, Mathglot. I love welcoming people (and I found the student welcome notice template too), so I'll be sure to always do it. But if I see a student who hasn't gotten connected with a course, I'll be sure to post on the noticeboard. I was learning as I went which is why my tone was so concerned above (I'm new here). Sincerely, Shashi Sushila Murray, (message me) 07:03, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Students or socks?

Hi Shalor, I have come across a relatively large group of editors who may be students. They do not appear to be part of any Wiki Ed project, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are socks. The accounts were all created in the last few months. I cannot disclose what institution they appear to be from, but it is in the United States. Here's a list:

There are no doubt more but I didn't want to continue checking if they turn out to be students. Behaviorally, even the ones who have posted only to Talk pages, share obvious similarities. They are disruptive and not-so-disruptive. The most common disruption is copyright violations. Also, much of the material they post to articles is very student-thesis-like. What do you think?--Bbb23 (talk) 23:52, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Bbb23 - sorry for not getting to this sooner, work has picked up a lot. Looking at this, it definitely looks like a case of a rogue class assignment as opposed to sockpuppetry. In any case, I saw that they do seem to be from a community college (not naming the one) based on the proxies they used in the sourcing. It's not one of our current colleges that we're working with (ie, a current class), but I've left them some messages asking them to get their professor to contact us. Userpage Help

Hi Shalor. I've noticed that my Userpage doesn't include the same boxed message stating that I am a student editor in my course. I am enrolled in the class as part of my WikiEdu course, I have completed the training modules, and I am listed on the "Student" page for my course. The course is also listed on "My Dashboard" and my username and article are featured on the course's Wikipedia project page. I'm just wondering why, when navigating to my userpage from the course page, I don't have the same "This user is a student editor in ..." message on my page. Thank you. Hello.

I need help with...

My Contributions heading. I would just like to make sure I've properly cited/credited the sources that I am referring to in that heading. I have italicized public online journal databases, while citing the contributions/titles that my scholar has written. Is this fine?

Thank you

I need help with... I thought this was posted as an active article weeks ago but upon a second look it seems that is not? Did I move the page to another user page?

assigned article not showing edits

I have an article assigned to me for my class, and it shows that I have no edits on our dashboard and it shows no changes in the article, yet on my sandbox it shows all my contribution and it shows all my activity. Why does it not show that my article has changed and contributions and is being eddited on my course home page? thank you Emily Ullrich — Preceding unsigned comment added by MsSoftballMom (talkcontribs) 04:57, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Apologies for plagiarism

Hi Shalor. I deeply regret that I unintentionally plagiarized the article by paraphrasing certain paragraphs using other sources. I will make sure to take notes and put my own words. Thank you. Kvl40981 (talk) 01:04, 7 December 2018 (UTC)Kvl40981

(talk page watcher) Hi Nafiskabir000. Shalor (Wiki Ed) might just be a little busy at the moment, but I'm sure she'll get back to you when she can. It also appears that the two Wiki Ed experts assigned to help your class are Ian (Wiki Ed) and Helaine (Wiki Ed). Have you tried actually asking one of them about this? Perhaps one of them can help. It was also suggested to you at WP:THQ#help that you ask your class teacher, but please understand that the Wikipedia Teahouse is generally a place to ask general questions about Wikipedia editing; so, the Teahouse hosts might not be familiar with your specific assignment to offer anything other than some general advice like that. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:50, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

Need help request from Greekromank (talk)

Hello.

I need help with just putting my page on Wikipedia so I can see how many characters I've added. It's a new article and I've doe all the trainings but it still does not let me. Greekromank (talk) 17:10, 8 December 2018 (UTC) Kate

@Greekromank: I have just reviewed your article, and made a couple of tweaks, plus a suggestion for a better reference, which you'll find on your talk page. There are two ways to work out character counts. The first way, you should know already, which is to simply paste the relevant sections into MS Word, delete irrelevant stuff like reference characters etc, then use Word's own wordcount tool. The second is a tool that works in the same way, and you can find it here: http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/charcount.shtml Hope this helps. DYK Nomination Errors

Hey, I screwed up this DYK nomination about How to be Drawn. I did it for the final exam, could you please help me very quickly? Thank you! PeterYatesVT (talk) 19:25, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

Hello, Shalor,

I came across a student article that has been tagged three times for speedy deletion, deleted twice and then recreated twice that suffers from copyright infringement. Each time it's created, different websites'content has been lifted.

I'm coming to you because you were the contact person for The University of Alabama class and I just want to urge you to let students thinking of submitting articles to Wikipedia know that we can't accept articles with even a hint of copyright infringement. Even if it is just one paragraph of an entire article, it's not acceptable. I realize that you know this, I'm guessing that some of the students don't quite get it yet. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 23:55, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Liz - was this for Photographic Communication page? I've let their instructor know and I've told the student that continuing to do this will get them blocked. Thank you for letting me know about this! I definitely try to make sure that they know that there's a zero tolerance policy for copyright infringement on Wikipedia. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk)
How did you know?! Yes, that was the article. There is definitely a learning curve for students and I'm coming across articles placed on category pages and stuff like that but it's nothing that we can't clean up. But copyright is definitely a more serious issue. It might be news to students that Wikipedia has such strong standards! I'd say the biggest error I'm coming across is students trying to make a new article on a subject that already has an article. It's so much more work revising an article than creating a new stub!
Good luck with the work you do! Liz Read! Talk! 00:52, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

Adding to an existing article

Hey Shalor so everytime I try to go in and add to the Gender Inequality article I have it breaks up the article. How do I stop this from happening or is there something wrong currently with what I am adding. Kalynnmc (talk) 20:42, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

Kyoung H Park Draft

Hi, Shalor I appreciate all your help! Your post on my talk page definitely helped clear up what I need to work on to be a credible article. I have found new, secondary sources to replace Kyoung's personal website. However, my main issue is that many of these secondary sources seem to pull from Kyoung's website. Furthermore, most publications/articles that have significant information about Park are in the form of interviews. How do you suggest I proceed? Editing a page for a class on Feminist Texts and Theories Feminist Publishing

Dear Shalor,

Thank you for your welcome message. I took the wiki courses related to the class I am taking at the Graduate Center CUNY: https://dashboard.wikiedu.org/courses/CUNY_Graduate_Center/Feminist_Text_and_Theories_Feminist_Publishing_(Fall_2018). This is where I have to edit a page as an assignment. For now, I have gathered the sources that I want to use to improve the history part of this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_rights_in_Haiti. The idea is to ad more information about the recent history of the movement. I have doubts about my sources: I am not sure they all fit the criteria for wikipedia. Update on Kyoung H. Park

Shalor, For some reason, my talk page will not allow me to reply to your post, so I am replying to you on your talk page. Once again, thank you for your constructive help. I believe I have addressed the issues in your notes that you have not already changed. I have added the dates that the plays have been published in the list of works. Also, I found a section from Americantheatre.org that states that Kyoung is the first Korean from Latin America to publish in the United States. I hope that this serves as a sufficient source. I understand your concern about this claim, but I believe it to be a very important aspect of Kyoung's career. Furthermore, I have removed Theaterscene.net and have found more legitimate sources that talk about Kyoung's plays. In regards to primary sources, I have found that most of the significant information regarding Kyoung's notability comes from sources that contain interviews. I strongly believe that the information I pull from Park is integral in understanding Park's career. Please let me know if there is more to be done, I would love to get this article fully published Booklad123 (talk) 02:24, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Booklad123! I'll respond here and on your page. Thank you for fixing the dates. I did change the writing up slightly with the first claim to saying that he's credited as being the first, since that gives a bit more wiggle room. With interviews, you can definitely use them but they won't be seen as non-primary by many Wikipedians so it's really not a good idea to rely heavily on interviews to establish notability. I've added some sourcing and I think that there may be enough to squeak by, it may be a good idea to ask Jimfbleak to take a look, as he was the admin who handled the deletion. (Note, he wasn't the person who tagged the page.) Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:04, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Booklad123, posting here to keep everything together. I believe the relevant notability criterion is Wikipedia:Notability (people)#creative professionals. I have to say that I can't see how he meets any of the relevant criteria. He puts on his own plays, which don't appear to be notable, at his own venue. None of that ticks any of the notability criteria. Even the poorly sourced claim that he is the first Korean in Latin America to be produced and published in the United States is so constrained as to be almost meaningless. He's not the first Korean, nor the the first Latin America. How many Korean Latin American playwrights are there? The category seems to have been created for him! I don't think he's notable, and the article does little more than, in effect, to promote him and his plays. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:32, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

Time zone change

Hi Shalor this is Alexis from the POLI126AA Class at UCSD. How do I change the timezone settings to UTC time instead of GMT time?Im having difficulty finding local authority and editing the source code?

  1. Set Default Timezone

$wgLocaltimezone = "UTC"; date_default_timezone_set( $wgLocaltimezone ); — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amotonaga (talkcontribs) 22:26, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

  • This is a good question! You can change the time zone via your preference page (Special:Preferences), and going to the appearance tab. Scroll down until you see "Time offset". You will want to select "America/Los Angeles" from the list, as this will change the settings to your time zone. (I'll add this here in case anyone else is curious.)
