Main Page appearance: Russell T Davies
This is a note to let the main editors of Russell T Davies know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on April 27, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or one of his delegates (Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs)), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 27, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:
Russell T Davies (born 1963) is a Welsh television producer and screenwriter notable for the 2005 revival of the classic British science fiction series Doctor Who. Born in Swansea, Davies joined the BBC's children's department on a part-time basis in 1985 and eventually wrote two series for the network, Dark Season and Century Falls. As a freelance writer in the mid-1990s, Davies' early scripts explored concepts of religion and sexuality among various backdrops: Springhill was a soap drama about a Catholic family in contemporary Liverpool; The Grand explored society's opinion of contemporary subjects during the interwar period; and Queer as Folk, his first prolific series, recreated his experiences in the Manchester gay scene. Works during the 2000s include Bob & Rose, which portrayed a gay man who fell in love with a woman, The Second Coming, which focused on the second coming and deicide of Jesus Christ, and Casanova, an adaptation of the Venetian lover's complete memoirs. Davies became the executive producer of the revived Doctor Who series in 2005 and oversaw a surge in popularity that led to the production of two spin-off series: Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. An arbitration case regarding sexology has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:
- Standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all articles dealing with transgender issues and paraphilia classification (e.g., hebephilia).
- User:Jokestress and User:James Cantor are banned from interacting with each other, commenting on and/or commenting about each other including their professional lives, works and on-wiki activities. This applies to all namespaces, but excludes dispute resolution that explicitly relates to both parties.
- User:Jokestress is indefinitely banned from the topic of human sexuality, including biographical articles.

Advice
Don't mess this up or become tense over it. I just plowed through the archives for a few mentions that back your assertions and tried to help. Taking a hardline is not in your interest, and I believe the 7 sources I mentioned help prove that your actions were not without considerable thought. You'd do well to strike or remove your confronting posts because not all editors see the content dispute and behavior as separate matters. Your behavior matters more then the content issue at this point, even if they are wrong, you want to move forward and not stay in the past. I added sources for the content dispute side, maybe an effective counter even, but that should be enough for future eyes to make a decision provided you don't become confrontational over the old issue. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 01:02, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, indeed. As I mentioned, I'm still extremely bitter about the way I was treated during the topic ban discussion and the talk page discussions leading up to it. As a trans woman myself, who had not come out on Wikipedia at the time, I did find the level of discussion rather personally offensive; being called "a repulsive lying bigot" and having my intentions as an a LGBT person called into question still rather hurts, and I never received an apology for it. Sceptre (talk) 01:14, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
- It is sad, personal attacks hurt regardless of the intention behind them. I've got my own long running dispute to worry about, but for what's it worth, try to move forward whenever possible. It's what everyone should do, ideally. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 01:19, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I have long held the philosophy on Wikipedia that the only things I will take personally are praise. All else is background noise. I did not see the discussion, nor will I look for it. I know how much things hurt even if one tries hard not to let them. Please laugh in the face of insults and rejoice in praise. Hi Sceptre, I was hoping that I could just ask what your preferred gender pronouns are so I don't accidentally use the wrong ones. I assume it would be the she-series, but it's better safe to ask than accidentally use the wrong ones. Thanks, NW (Talk) 03:02, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

- I agree with you. I have a cousin who is M2F and the polite thing was to ask both what she preferred to be called (the family knew her only be her male name prior to my asking) and what pronouns to use. A polite question never gets taken the wrong way, a bad assumption can spoil a relationship for ever. Fiddle Faddle 12:27, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Block
I have blocked you for 12 hours per this edit that violated your topic ban. (Per our discussion on irc earlier) This is an Arbitration Enforcement block under this remedy and has to be specially appealed. --Guerillero | My Talk 03:08, 23 August 2013 (UTC)ere
- Though I understand why you were blocked, I am grateful that it is brief. The list of quotes you posted on Jimbo's talk page is telling, sad and offensive to all compassionate people, not just transgendered people. I have always favored addressing people by the names of their choice, without regard to legalities. So, Jimmy Carter and Chelsea Manning. It's easy. And gender self-identification is intensely personal, and I believe in accepting people as they self-identify.
- I wish you well. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:48, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
- Your post was well worth being blocked for. It raises the usual set of uncomfortable truths about bigotry that always require highlighting in the loudest forum one can find. Use your voice sparingly and only risk being blocked when it is worthwhile. This was worthwhile. I doubt it will go anywhere or make any difference, but it was worthwhile. The alleged wisdom of crowds always sees to it that bigotry remains as the overall consensus. Fiddle Faddle 08:33, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Request reason:
Edit for which I was blocked for was not in the scope of the topic ban, unless you're saying that I can't make any edits relating to the transphobic behaviour I have demonstrated exists; in which case, this feels more like a punitive block for speaking out against injustices. - Have you reviewed JWales' post in which he asks that people not be blocked for violating their topic ban on his talk page especially if they are raisin concerns with Wikipedia's administration? NW (Talk) 12:23, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
- Now that you mention it, he also said that it would be unwise to allow his page to be used as a "useless battleground for editors who have been excluded elsewhere" – which is exactly what was happening here. But in any case, I don't see it as particularly relevant. Jimbo Wales needs to respect community-imposed sanctions just like everybody else. He has no more right to unilaterally declare his user space exempt from them than you or I would. Comments by other administrators on the AN thread were unanimous in saying Sceptre's edits were unacceptable. Plus, she was violating the sanction not just on Jimbo's page but at the AN thread itself too. (–unsigned by Fut.Perf. (talk) 13:27, 24 August 2013)
- The arbcom ruling specifically allows appeals on AN. NE Ent 14:23, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

Sceptre is being treated like the US treats or wants to treat Manning, Snowden, Assange etc. and I don't think that's acceptable. Count Iblis (talk) 14:23, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
- I agree. I have no idea how the attitude most editors are showing comports with the Foundation's Non discrimination policy. Sceptre (talk) 19:53, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
- Did you really just compare Sceptre to Manning et al?! GiantSnowman 20:58, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
- No comparison like that can be perfect. There does exist on Wikipedia a problem with dealing with controversial topics. E.g. in the Amanda Knox case Admins had been imposing a regime in which editors got unfairly blocked because of their POV. Jimbo intervened there when a banned editor posted on his talk page about this. It seems that this case may be similar, you have Jimbo again complaining that Sceptre should not have been blocked for bringing a real problem to his attention. By blocking Sceptre for that, the topic ban ends up being a de-facto cover to hide a real problem, similar to the US attempts to stop Snowden from leaking information to the media. Count Iblis (talk) 22:57, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
- Did you really just compare Sceptre to Manning et al?! GiantSnowman 20:58, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
- And with Sceptre topic-banned, then discussions were limited about trans issues in Manning case, where many of us were eventually shocked when U.S. national news reported "Chelsea E. Manning" announced a name/gender change. Plus, who knew wp:MOSIDENTITY covered such cases, and now the enwiki admins who move-renamed the Manning page are being accused of improper admin conduct, some wanting those admins sanctioned, with wild calls for desysopping. Meanwhile, I have been learning some developers do not want to fix the trivial wp:edit_conflicts which can be auto-merged by a few simple changes to MediaWiki utility diff3.c, and no one told me what "cisgender" meant because Sceptre is too afraid to discuss wp:COMMONNAME, where I have been debating the unusual forcing of dashes into names which 95%-99% of the world spells with hyphens. Sceptre is instantly seen as coherent, well-reasoned, and restrained (i.e., not "site-banned"), and yet another questionable case of "indef topic ban". BTW: I am indef topic-banned (2.3 years now) about Amanda Knox re "Murder of Meredith Kercher" and "all related institutions" across Italy! More later.... -Wikid77 (talk) 19:40, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
Your edit on Jimbo's talk page
Just a brief comment on this edit you made to Jimbo's talk page:[2] (I replied there yesterday, but you may not have seen it.) You referred to the writer Julie Bindel making 'horrifically transphobic comments in The Observer' back in January; I believe you actually meant Julie Burchill. Strictly speaking, this edit was a BLP violation, but I'm conscious of the prohibition against editing other user's comments so haven't altered it. If you would like to me to edit your comment to correct your mistake, feel free to say so. Robofish (talk) 00:44, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

File:Samesex marriage in USA.svg and grey color
Hey, I noticed you recolored the 7f7f7f grey on the map to a different shade. The different shade was not very distinguishable from the grey we used for New Mexico and the US territories, thus it was not optimal. Both I and one other use mistook the two colors. I have reverted the color back to 7f7f7f. In the future please discuss color changes before you make them. Thanks! Thegreyanomaly (talk) 00:10, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
- Heya, it was simply a change to be consistent with File:Recognition of same-sex relationships in the United States.svg. I don't mind that revert. :) Sceptre (talk) 00:13, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: The Stolen Earth
This is a note to let the main editors of The Stolen Earth know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on November 23, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 23, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:
"The Stolen Earth" is the twelfth episode of the 2007–08 series and the 750th overall episode of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which marks its 50th anniversary on 23 November 2013. The episode was written by show runner and head writer Russell T Davies. It is the first of a two-part crossover story with spin-offs The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, concluding with "Journey's End", the finale of the fourth series, which brings closure to several prominent story arcs created under Davies. In the episode, contemporary Earth and 26 other planets are stolen by the Daleks. As the Doctor (David Tennant, pictured) and his companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) try to find Earth, his previous companions Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), and Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) convene to contact him and mount a defence against the Daleks. The episode was received positively by the audience and professional reviewers. It received one of the highest Audience Appreciation Index ratings for a television programme, and when first shown was the second most-watched programme of the week. (Full article...)

Wiki Loves Pride 2014
Hi Sceptre. In case you are not aware, there is an upcoming campaign to improve coverage of LGBT-related topics on Wikipedia, culminating with an international edit-a-thon on June 21. See Wiki Loves Pride 2014 for more information. If you are interested, you might consider creating a page for a major city (or cities!) near you, with a list of LGBT-related articles that need to be created or improved. This would be a tremendous help to Wikipedia and coverage of LGBT culture and history. Thanks for your consideration, and please let me know if you have any questions! --Another Believer (Talk) 18:22, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Please be particularly aware, Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:
- Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
- Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.
If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:48, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

- I recommend that you reread WP:INVOLVED, particularly the definition. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:35, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- You've been editing the article heavily, and reverted me on a point of substance rather than a point of administration. Were you to revert to a pre-conflict version, it wouldn't be a violation of INVOLVED, but because you actually joined one side of the dispute, you became involved. Sceptre (talk) 06:37, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- You reverted the same thing three times before he got involved. That's why you've been blocked. --Slenderdan (talk) 06:44, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- The edit-warring was about Category:Violence against men in North America, a category that with the removal of this page had only 2 entries and at the time had no definition of what articles should be in this category, and I can see BLP issues arising both with the category and its addition to this page. Apparently the perpetrator of this killing has written about his hatred of women, but not of men, which would justify the Category:Violence against women in the United States category (although I'd still like to see a definition for this one also). Adding the violence against men category appears to be stating that the perpetrator was acting because of his hatred of men (as well), and that doesn't seem to be justified - thus a BLP violation. I was about to close this as no violation when Crisco blocked. See also the discussion I've had with another Admin at User talk:Dominic#the editor he blocked. Dougweller (talk) 07:25, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- User:Crisco 1492, do you really think you are not involved? You have edited the article heavily, and you reverted Sceptre. I'm not excusing the 3RR violation, but you probably should not have pushed the block button. There seems to be more going on(adding a Cat that had no other articles) than simple content disagreement. I'm going to assume that you have some kind of interpretation of WP:INVOLVED that differs from standard practice, but the appearance is not good. Dave Dial (talk) 07:39, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Dave Dial, I will copy my reply to Dougweller from my talk page: "I do not consider reverting violations of policy being involved. If I were to do so, then I would have to ask another admin to block somebody who, say, spends an hour vandalizing articles and refuses to stop (not that Spectre was vandalizing, but 3RR violation was out of policy). Had this been an issue which I had feelings regarding, there could have been WP:INVOLVED issues, or if this had been a content dispute with neither party violating policy. I warned her, reverted her violation of 3RR, and blocked her when she reverted that and went to 5RR." As I've said elsewhere, I have no strong feelings regarding this issue. I was reverting a violation of policy. Nothing more, nothing less. After reverting Sceptre I opened a discussion to head off further disruption caused by edit warring over the category (which appears to have been successful, based on a quick scan of the history). If the community wants to crucify me for preventing conflict on a high traffic, high profile article, so be it. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:47, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- And while we're at it, could we please limit discussion of my block to one page (perhaps here, so that Sceptre can participate?) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:49, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Sceptre, I have unblocked you per consensus here and elsewhere that my block was inappropriate. My apologies. You are welcome to participate at the discussion regarding the category at Talk:2014_Isla_Vista_killings#Violence_against_men_category to build a consensus whether or not the disputed category should be included, but please do not edit war any further. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:42, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Sarah Brown
Please stop - this is a ridiculously petty edit war. You are letting your personal biases get in the way of objective editing. Regardless of what Brown uses, "equal marriage" is a term used in British political discourse exclusively by proponents of same-sex marriage, and is thus NPOV. And quite apart from anything, it's not at all obvious what it means to someone not familiar with British politics. To repeat myself yet again: if you think it's notable that she uses this term in preference to the more neutral "gay marriage", add a sentence or two to the article saying so. Otherwise, leave it as it is - you do not own the article. Wereon (talk) 12:53, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
- Both of you are seasoned editors, yet both of you are on the edge of WP:3RR. Please take this to the talk page for a wider audience. Next person to blindly revert gets blocked - Alison ❤ 17:42, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Gender Gap Task Force. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Gender Gap Task Force/Evidence. Please add your evidence by October 17, 2014, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Gender Gap Task Force/Workshop. Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter
Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone! Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world. Awards will be given out to everyone who copy edits at least one of the target articles. Sign up here! Election time again: The election of coordinators to serve from 1 January to 30 June 2015 is now underway. Candidates can nominate themselves or others from December 01, 00:01 (UTC), until December 15, 23:59. The voting period will run from December 16, 00:01 (UTC), until December 31, 23:59. You can read about coordinators' duties here. Please consider getting involved and remember to cast you vote—it's your Guild and it doesn't organize itself! DYK for Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2014
On 31 January 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2014, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that a Parliament Square protest against a ban on depiction of certain sexual practices in streaming videos featured slogans such as "Urine for a shock if you expect us to stop"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2014. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
