How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Epiphany
in friendship |
---|
Happy new year, in friendship! - Epiphany seems like a good day to say so, after a Bavarian peasants' mass (sorry, on the train home, no recent pics of that - just keep watching), and two DYK, even with a pic I took. I enjoyed meetings with friends in real life, and wish you many of those. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:04, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- Happy new year to you, too, @Gerda Arendt and Gerda! I'm going to enjoy keeping an eye on your Images 2022 and Places and songs 2022. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:00, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- ... as I'll come here just to admire cats! I'm home, so should upload the latest. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:10, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda, Gran Canaria! The hikes! The views! The food! Amazing experience, I am sure. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:11, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
- yes, and yesterday even with cats (after I saw your white ones) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:02, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
- more but stopped at 22 January - click on songs, - 7 cats one pic to come later. 30 January means 10 years of Precious. It's also the birthday of a friend, - I'm so happy I mentioned his DYK on his 90th birthday when he was still alive. I have a great singer on DYK whom I heard, Elena Guseva, and wait for a Recent death appearance of Georg Christoph Biller whom I saw in action. Admins seem to sleep on Sundays. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:14, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- Love the photos, and this time, my fav is the monarch butterfly. Thanks for sharing, Gerda Arendt. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:03, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- thank you, - update: we have now Guseva pictured, Biller picured better (but still not on the Main page), and one more day of my pics, no detectable animals, - the falcons after which the ravine is named, were flying but way too high to make an impression on a photo --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:33, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

Question about leads
Hi Rosie, hope all is well. Here, it has snowed. A. Lot. ;) So I've heard (both from you and others) that the leads in women's bios and other women-centric articles tend to be shorter. Is there a source that supports that? If so, could you direct me to it, please? Thanks, take care. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 23:18, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Christine, thanks for stopping by and happy new year! It snowed here, too, but now it's mostly gone. I may have said that articles related to women have shorter leads than those related to men, but if so, what I read or if it was said during some wiki-related Zoom meeting -- and I've attended many of those in the last year. I do remember hearing at some wiki Zoom meeting that more and more Wikipedia consumption is taking place via virtual assistants (e.g., Siri, Alexa), so include more than 1 sentence in lead paragraphs to give more context to a listener. It may be that WMF Research Department has done a study in this regard and I'm just spacing out on that? In any case, it would be good to know the answer to your question so pinging LZia (WMF) who may be able to assist. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:48, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, Rosie. I will ask Zia my question. I know where to find support for the Alexa assertions, but I'm not able to find any support for leads tending to be shorter in bios and other articles. Best, Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:40, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
- Perfect, @Christine, and I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful or that my memory evades me. If you do get an answer to your question, would you please let me know, too? I'd appreciate it. Thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:11, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Dear Rosiestep, You're invited to a zoom call, taking place on February 11, with the goal of improving the article on Los Angeles to Featured article status! I often find it daunting to approach the Big Subjects on my own—so if you, like me, want a time to sit down with fellow dedicated editors and tackle something important and complex, this is the zoom for you! I, unfortunately, have no way to transmit snacks over zoom; but I trust you to exercise good judgement and discretion in selecting snacks of your own. Hope to see you there—if you're interested, add your name here! theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/she) 00:19, 10 January 2022 (UTC) To opt out of future mailings about LA meetups, please remove your name from this list. |

"SPIE 2020" listed at Redirects for discussion
An editor has identified a potential problem with the redirect SPIE 2020 and has thus listed it for discussion. This discussion will occur at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 January 12#Mainspace redirects to meetups and editathons until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. That's an advert for the Congress of Allied Women on War Service, right? I had to search for the theatre and I'm a little worried it might be another event - but it matches up so ell that I can't imagine it. Also, it's by Neysa McMein, so... Bonus!

- Wow! Adam Cuerden, yes, it is an advert for the Congress of Allied Women on War Service. Cool find! Appears that the organizers had initially thought to hold it earlier in the month, but it was pushed back. I don't think that's unusual bearing in mind it was wartime. Is it okay to add the poster to the article? --Rosiestep (talk) 10:38, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
I can't see any reason not to; I just wanted to doublecheck I had the right conference first. That said, if there's one thing I've learned about these kind of things, it's that half the time "official" names for them don't get decided on from the twenty variations in use at the time until decades after. - No worries! Was doing a wikiwalk of sorts, and thought I'd see what I could find. Libraries have the most random things sometimes if you figure out where to look. [1], say. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.5% of all FPs 12:53, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

- I genuinely just meant that as an example of the surprising funds I stumbled on (was trying to get a better copy of the Inter-Allies Women's Congress, and so searched Gallica for "Union française pour le suffrage des femmes" and found all sorts of random things that I need to upload. And then I looked and was it was one of your articles. Of course it is. Point though is you wouldn't expect Gallica as a go-to source for Hungarian posters. - Adam Cuerden, way to go with the research! BTW, I've been looking around Gallica myself lately because I'm doing some translations of women feminists and writers from FR-WP. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:58, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Always precious
Ten years ago, you were found precious. That's what you are, always, and you are first to get it! ... did you see my latest cat? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:46, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Ten years! Thank you, Gerda, for this memory, which is very "precious" to me. Latest cats? I did not see them, though I looked. Where are they hiding? --Rosiestep (talk) 16:04, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- only one, and hiding on a pebble beach of the same colour, 19 Jan - saw several today, took pics of two, little black one sleeping on top of larger one, but both with eyes closed and hard to see, sadly, but I just managed a butterfly, of yesterday --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:14, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

February songs
frozen |
---|
Today is a feast day for which Bach wrote several cantatas including Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin, BWV 125, which was on DYK 10 years ago and TFA 4 years ago. I'm less happy that Georg Christoph Biller had to wait days for a Main page appearance under recent deaths, and then stayed not even for a full day. It would have been so meaningful today, with the man in the cantata saying he can depart in joy and peace. - The February pic was taken in memory last year. - If you click on songs: 7 cats on one pic ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:09, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
- Happy 2/2/22, Gerda Arendt! Wishing you joy and peace. There is so much that goes into sorting out date and duration for Mainpage appearances... I've just taken to appreciating what I see there. BTW, 8 not 7; there's 1 on the fence whom I've included in today's cropping (with thanks for the photo). :) --Rosiestep (talk) 17:37, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you, - good date. Thanks for helping me count, and the exposition. After all, Biller was returned to the MP by a merciful admin for a bit longer, - in my version just filling white space. I was at a great concert so slow updating. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:57, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt to add onto this, looking a bit more I believe there's a ninth one a little further down the rail, slightly hidden behind the vines! Moneytrees🏝️Talk/CCI guide 00:09, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- Oh my goodness, Moneytrees; you are right -- there are 9: 2 on the fence, 3 on the stone wall, 4 on the ground. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:42, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- Wow, sharp eyes, Moneytrees🏝️! - I like my talk today (keeping Biller a bit longer, and even explaining how it works), and managed to picture two more vacation days, one cat, and not looking at us (had to watch where paws went), so not good for the watching job. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:21, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- What a lovely vacation, Gerda Arendt. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:46, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you! Today, I decorated my talk with a Bach cantata. I heard it last year when missing RexxS began, and "not letting go" was a theme. And I managed the rest of the vacation, detecting no more cats, but a crab. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:50, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt, very nice! In fact, I notice that it's a Good article started by none other than our Good friend, Dr. Blofeld. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:09, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Right, as noted on my user page and talk page. He then had the idea that all Bach cantatas should have an article, and started the missing ones all one day, and I was furious because I wanted to take them to DYK one by one ;) - So it took 10 years. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:16, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

- Prayer, indeed, Gerda Arendt; many. And congratulations! It's an awesome photo of what was surely a lovely event. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:30, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
- The event was a church service at "our" church, following a concert the evening before, in the style you can listen to in their 2000 album named Prayer for Ukraine (see my talk or their article, or even the article of the same name): half of the program sacred, half anything and international (for which they'd dress in red and black evening outfit). Very friendly, very open - I had two young women staying overnight, after they had slept on the bus the two nights before. After the first concert, they stood all around us and sang - for an encore - an arrangement of the second movement of the New World Symphony, good for goose-pimples. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:36, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

Question regarding Catharine Trotter Cockburn
Hello Rosie, i'm currently translating (mostly your, thx) work into de-WP. You indicated that you used a 1875-issue of Art Journal for some of the story, see Catharine Trotter Cockburn#Attribution and notes. But the link to the Journal seems to be wrong, nothing in there on Trotter. Any ideas? Best Regards, He3nry (talk) 12:02, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- That is so cool, He3nry, that you're translating some of these article! Thank you for finding the ref issue with CTC; I'm stumped how it occurred. It's fixed now, using a different PD book (but the page numbers didn't change). --Rosiestep (talk) 17:58, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, that was a fast reaction :-) It is already fixed and the german version is published. Thx and have a nice weeekend, He3nry (talk) 18:18, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
Hello Rosie, it's me again (most probably by accident). I have the same problem with this The-Art-Journal-Link in Maria Jane Jewsbury. Could you have a look? Thank you, --He3nry (talk) 08:00, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know, He3nry, and sorry for the problem. I don't know what's causing it, but I found another source, with same page numbers, so I've done the needful. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:52, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:1875 children's books
A tag has been placed on Category:1875 children's books indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! Talk! 06:09, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Liz. I should have deleted it yesterday after I realized the category would be empty as the book article I created was for an 1874 book, not an 1875 book, as I originally though. In the meantime, I've done the needful. --Rosiestep (talk) 12:31, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

I didn't expect help so quickly! I don't know that much about her, but it was a real thorn in the side of the people who had been working on beefing up her story that Wikipedia showed the name spelled wrong. Fothergilla (talk) 13:49, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!
The Original Barnstar | |
I don't know how long you have been a trustee, but congratulations! And thanks for all of your help, I added an editathon for Women in Religion (1000 women in religion) to your women in red events page. I hope I did it right. If you can remind me how to advertise, please send advice. I was trying California task force but not sure how to get everyone at once. RosPost 23:18, 9 March 2022 (UTC) |
- Hi, RosPost, and thank you for the kind words and the barnstar! Nice! Also, it is great to hear from you. I see that you posted your upcoming event on the Women in Red event page, which averages 7.6 pageviews/day, which is fine, but for even greater promotion/advertising, I recommend that you also post it on this Women's History Month 2022 page as it averages 35 pageviews/day.
- I'm not sure what you mean by "... trying California task force...". Why I'm confused is that it appears to me that your upcoming editathon will be conducted via Zoom, so wouldn't anyone anywhere be welcome to attend? That said, if what you're looking for are California editor lists, there's this one for Los Angeles and this one for San Francisco. Hope this helps, and I'd be happy to answer any other questions! --Rosiestep (talk) 23:43, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Assistance with article move
Hi, Rosie. Sorry to bother you again but I need the help of an administrator. I have been following the development of a recent new contributor VRlasso who has now produced a well prepared Draft:Francia Russell which I tried to move to mainspace. Unfortunately, despite the rather confused info about moving a new article to a redirect, I was unable to do so. I would therefore appreciate your assistance with this as it can be frustrating for keen new users to wait weeks until AfC catches up with their work.--Ipigott (talk) 09:14, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
- No worries, Ipigott; I'm very glad I can help with this kind of task. I deleted the redirect, Francia Russell, so the draft can be moved into that title now. --Rosiestep (talk) 12:57, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
Your thoughts
Based on your work around Wikipedia, I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for bringing Lucy Feagin to GA status. I'm planning on adding what I can and then having someone copyedit it. There are more things that I can add, but I'm running in to the issue that many sources I find are repeating what I already have in the article. Are there similar GA articles with similar coverage that you know of that I can compare the article to? SL93 (talk) 04:11, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, SL93, and thanks for reaching out to me. I'm sorry that I can't be of much help with this as I haven't been active in bringing articles to GA status in years. But, Women in Green is dedicated to that work, so I'd recommend asking on its talkpage: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Green. Good luck! And thanks for everything you do around here. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:16, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you. I didn't know that group existed. SL93 (talk) 17:20, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Jane Cakebread
On 21 March 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Jane Cakebread, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Jane Cakebread's 277 court appearances for drunkenness helped bring about the Inebriates Act of 1898? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Jane Cakebread. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Jane Cakebread), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Women in Red Translation Contest
It seems to me, Rosie, that your idea of running a three-month translation contest is likely to be a great success. Now that we have put together a meetup page, I was wondering whether we should bring it to the attention of people in the Wikimedia Foundation who are interested in translation. While I recognize that WMF is interested mainly in having English articles translated into other languages, it seems to me that our efforts to build up the English resource with biographies from other language versions should be of interest. Perhaps Eric Luth (WMSE) would be interested in what we are planning (last but not least in our translations from Swedish!). There are certainly others like Anthere and all those who participated in the recent Women's Day broadcast who might be interested in encouraging wider interest. I'll leave this in your hands, Rosie, and try to concentrate on spreading news of the contest itself.--Ipigott (talk) 16:49, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Ipigott. I like the idea of informing people beyond those subscribed to our mailing list. I'm not sure which WMF staff you have in mind, nor have I have ever heard that WMF is interested mainly in having English articles translated into other languages, but that's an interesting fact. As for notifying other Wikimedians, such as Eric and Anthere, certainly, yes. In one of the main wiki gender gap Telegram groups, we've been discussing using the meta:Celebrate Women page as a "mainpage" for women-related campaigns, and having subpages for each month enumerating that month's events, e.g., meta:Celebrate Women/2022/March, meta:Celebrate Women/2022/April, etc. What do you think? --Rosiestep (talk) 21:22, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- That sounds like a good idea. If you like, I'll put something together on that page. I've found several references to the importance of translating from English into other languages, including for example the less used languages of Africa. I'll try to find them for you.--Ipigott (talk) 06:56, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- Here are a couple: After hitting 300,000 translations, what’s next for our content translation tool?, Africans are trying to fix Wikipedia’s language problem. I think perhaps Eric could fill you in on other initiatives.--Ipigott (talk) 16:24, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you, Ipigott for the examples. As my attention is laser-focused on Board work, I trust that whatever direction that you and other editors decide to pursue will be great. Thank you. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:44, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- So on one hand... I think it is a great idea. This being said... beyond translating articles, we are facing an increasing issue of lack of wikimedia translators for organizational pages. I believe part of that is due to rather recent editors not understanding how it works at all. So right now... I would even feel more motivated helping to boost the translation volunteer team (which in turn might help get more people to also translate wikipedia article). The second point is that, to be honest... until next summer... I will try to not pick on more stuff on my back. I am really packed with all my engagements right now. And to be honest... right now... my family issues are simply depleting severely my energy. So might keep an eye... but unlikely to do much for a while. Anthere (talk) 19:42, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- Anthere, noted and understood. Appreciate everything you do around the movement. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:44, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, Anthere, for your response. I second Rosie in appreciating everything you have been doing for the women's cause, especially on Meta. I understand your concern for the lack of editors willing to translate organizational pages but it seems to me it would be useful to contact the pertinent language versions of Wikipedia directly rather than the EN wiki where the emphasis is on translating into English. I'm sorry to hear you weighed down by family issues. In your absence, can you suggest other contributors involved with WMF and/or Meta who might be interested in providing support for some of our initiatives? You might have noticed, for example, that I also tried to drew your attention on Meta to our Gender studies initiative in April. But I'll now try to follow up on Rosie's suggestion of putting something together on Celebrate Women/2022/April. The main Celebrate Women page appears to have been very effective for March. Is anyone updating it for April or is this now a matter for individual projects?--Ipigott (talk) 09:57, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Weird redirect
I'm working on the women's studies lists for next month's editathon. I added a link to the pt:Teresa Joaquim but it is weirdly redirecting to Mária Eduardo. If you go to the redirect page it looks like the redirect has nothing whatsoever to do with the person it is redirecting to. The only source on the page shows the name as Mãiria Eduardo. Every other source I find for her is Maria Teresa Neto Joaquim Eduardo[2][3] or Maria Teresa Neto Joaquim Eduardoi.[4][5] In any case, none of them show her name is or ever was Teresa Joaquim, who is a notable academic and who I would like to create a redlink for. Can you, or someone who watches this page fix the problem to allow the link to point to someone whose name really is Teresa Joaquim? Thanks SusunW (talk) 05:06, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- SusunW, I promise to look at this no later than Saturday when I'm back home, but sooner if time permits. Knee deep this week in meetings from breakfast through bedtime. Maybe a pagestalker will beat me to it. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:48, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

The article Museum of London Antiquities has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
I would recommend merger with Charles Roach Smith, but the information is already there. Doesn't seem notable enough for its own page.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Happyecheveria (talk) 06:31, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
French CNRS
Hi, I wouldn't do this. The CNRS employs thousands of people and has been around for a long time, so if that list were even halfway complete, it would be completely unwieldy. Our Category:CNRS scientists currently contains "just" 115 entries, but I bet we have more articles than that (or should have more). --Randykitty (talk) 18:16, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
- Randykitty, thanks. Makes sense. I reverted myself. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:20, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
