conservation status for sockeye subpopulations

Hi Pengo, I work for a group that is conducting a range-wide assessment for sockeye salmon through the IUCN-SSG (salmonid specialist group); the red list is about to go public and I was hoping to update the wiki page. I understand how to update the global listing using the taxa box, but is there any way to provide the status listings for individual subpopulations? (there are just over 70) If not, what would be the best way to display this information? Can you help, if not could you let me know where to direct my question? Images on $100 laptop article

I delete a lot of images and screw up a few now and then because I'm much less then perfect. Sorry, it was one of yours this time. You might want to upload the image again with a more unique file name then Laptop-front - helps keep some people from uploading over it inadvertantly. Also, are your images on your Watchlist? Haeckel gallery

Pengo, thanks! I was going to get around to that eventually, but you've saved me the trouble. I've been keeping my own record of the uploads at User:Ragesoss/Haeckel (that page also includes what I take to be the German common names), so I double-checked to find the few that weren't categorized right or otherwise slipped through the cracks. When I upload more, I'll keep the gallery up-to-date. As for labeling and species names, I don't think I'm quite up for scanning all the description pages (as I did with the frogs), I'll serve requests for individual plates for use in well-developed articles. I'm not certain, but it looks like the new editions available for sale don't actually have the descriptions, just the plates (this one may, it's hard to tell from the amazon page). I give you this oponion for having strong and complex opinions on a number of topics without being a dick.

Apparently people on Wikipedia honor each other with small, free-use images accompanied by inane comments as some type of primitive tribal recognition ceremony, so here are a couple of onions!

Thanks for fixing the assessment scheme listed on the Pushing to 1.0 page. I wanted to do that myself, but felt it was inappropriate because I was the originator of the A/B system. However the 0.5/1.0 scheme was never applied to any articles as far as I know, because there were disputes about the exact meanings. On the other hand the A/B system seems to have become quite established on WP:1.0 and elsewhere. I think you have correctly judged the most common view, that 0.5 = B and 1.0 = A. Thanks a lot! Template:Descopy

Just saw this for the first time. I appreciate what you're trying to do, but why not simply edit the Commons description page in the relevant cases to a) make it clearer that the primary links refer to Commons galleries, b) add secondary links to Wikipedia articles (using the [[w:Article title]] syntax? As it is, this invites unnecessary duplication and, as a consequence, makes the description pages harder to maintain.--Eloquence* 21:43, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

The reason I didn't just add w: links to the commons page was that I'd like to see which links actually work, and w: links do not show the red/blue for working/broken links. Shock and Awe

Hello Pengo, I don't want to cause any trouble because I'm new here (at least as an editor), so I'd like to talk off the record to a few good contributors about a problem I see on an article that you've edited. Your contributions seem solid, so maybe you can help me. I've been using the Wikipedia definition of "Shock and Awe" for several months because I like how it described the type of warfare that "Shock and Awe" is and also how it gave a link to a definition of "rapid dominance" (of which it claims to be a subset).

In the last couple of days, however, a user called JW1805 edited the article and I think he made the definition much worse.[1] It now says that "Shock and Awe is a military doctrine," whereas is used to say exactly what type of military doctrine it falls into: "Shock and Awe is a method of unconventional warfare." Isn't the old definition more informative? According to the definition of Conventional warfare, I don't think anyone could call it that. So, I think it's safe and informative to say that "Shock and Awe" fits into the definition of unconventional warfare, don't you?

Also JW1805 removed the link to "Rapid dominance," deleted the "Rapid dominance" article and redirected it to "Shock and Awe." Yet the "Shock and Awe" article still says, "Its authors label [shock and awe] a subset of Rapid Dominance." Does that make any sense to you? According to RUSI Journal 141:8-12 Oct '96, "Rapid dominance" is an "intellectual construct" whereas "Shock and awe" is one "method" of implementing that construct. Obviously they are not the same thing. So, why would JW1805 redirect "Rapid dominance" to "Shock and Awe?" Why would he delete the "Rapid dominance" article and the link to it?

I went to JW1805's talk page to speak directly to him, but I read what others have said to him, and it seems to be the same story: if you are only one person complaining, JW1805 considers you a troublemaker and has his friends ban you, but if more than one person gets together and says the same thing, he listens. If you feel the same way as I about his edits to "Shock and Awe" and "Rapid dominance," I'm sure we can work together to get the best definition back in place. If you want my honest opinion, making shrines to pop culture is a massive waste of time and you've already invested far too much mental and emotional energy to it. I really wish people would care more about conserving real animals and less about the placement of drawings of anthropomorphised ones. Pathoschild's version is much neater, and the images which have been removed could possibly be added in a gallery at the bottom, although they are basically unnecessary. Try reading what has already been said to you. If you like drawings of animals, why not make some yourself and add them to the relevant articles about those animals. Collapsable taxobox

I really like your idea of creating a collapsable taxobox. It would be a great addition to have the ability to include the extra information without making the taxobox too clunky. Thanks for the feedback. I did bring it up on a village pump page (technical i think) but the discussion seems to have gone AWOL (i can't find it anyway). The idea generally wasn't greeted with much enthusiasm, and the technical problems of implementing it are still there. The main criticism I can recall was that the levels of taxonomy that are hidden are also often debated/uncertain. As for the technical side, I have noticed that the metadata on images is collapsable, and maybe the javascript it uses can be hijacked. (e.g. see Metadata section on Australia_Cairns_Koala.jpg) but I haven't attempted to use this approach as yet. —Pengo 21:18, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Turtle moves to common names

Hi Pengo, this is regarding the move for Aspideretes leithii to one of its common names. The name Nagpur Soft-shell Turtle is rather contrived (and not very suitable since the name specifies a geographic region and the species is found beyond that region) and hardly in use although noted in the EMBL database. I would defer any moves to common names for reptiles and amphibians in general until someone on the reptile and amphibians project offers a reference 'standardized' list of common names. Beastie bot - superfluous headers

One small one - on Cupressus dupreziana, you've set the IUCN status to EN, which applies to Cupressus dupreziana sensu lato (i.e., including Cupressus atlantica as Cupressus dupreziana var. atlantica). Here, the two taxa are treated as distinct species, for which the status for Cupressus dupreziana sensu stricto is CR (see the IUCN page for Cupressus dupreziana var dupreziana) - MPF 16:55, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Actually that's more of a major fubar than a small one. I've stopped beastie bot until I get a chance to fix the code that deals with varieties and subpopulations. Thanks for pointing this one out. Also, do you know why so many tree species are marked as "Secure"? IUCN only uses the term "least concern" and so where does "Secure" come from in this context? Thanks! The varieties and subpopulations problem shouldn't matter most of the time where wiki uses the same taxonomy as IUCN, it'll only differ in the few cases where we have adopted different taxonomy.

The 'secure' dates back to early versions (back from the article's start in Feb 2004 by User:Tannin) of Wikipedia:Conservation status (then under the title Conservation status, which is now a different article). I used 'Secure' for all the conifers listed as "[not threatened]" in Farjon's Kew Checklist of Conifers; these are now (in Farjon's newer publications) listed as LR (lc), which wasn't used in the Kew checklist, so obviously everything that I've marked as 'Secure' can be re-tagged LR (lc). Of course I don't know about species that other people have tagged as 'Secure'! - MPF 01:54, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Oops! Was in a rush and got myself confused and thought Beastie Bot had done the opposite (i.e. linked to the variety instead of the more general species page). Anyway, the confusion made me realise there may have been a bug in how it handled subpopulation entries from the red list, so at least I fixed that. I'll still have to fix it so it doesn't try to re-correct the category on Cupressus dupreziana and other changed entries next time it runs.

Beastie Bot -- references style

Could you reprogram Beastie Bot so that it recognizes (where possible) the references style of the article and adds the IUCN reference accordingly? For example, in an article like [5] you should use {{ref}} and {{note}}; where an article uses <ref>...</ref> and <reference/> you should do the same. (Otherwise I should add that this bot appears to be doing a good job.) Gdr 11:59, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for checking out the bot and giving feedback. It does do the second type of referencing but not the first. For the <ref>. style referencing I added status_ref to the taxobox to make it work (e.g. see Yellow-shouldered Blackbird.) Beastie Bot has just recently finished doing the initial run, so it might be trickier to fix things for the note-type referencing now. Unfortunately I didn't come across it when testing and thought it had disappeared and been replaced with <ref>. I might try making a list of taxoboxed species that use it and update them by hand. Missing period by bot

The following sentence "Database entry includes a brief justification of why this species is critically endangered and the criteria used" should have a period at the end. Also, I think the bot should ignore articles with the ref_harv style or it should be codified to recognize it (Maybe it's not as easy as just ignoring). Otherwise great job. Mammals

Hi there. Are you sure that "There are more humans alive today than there are individuals of all other mammal species combined"? I'd be a little bit surprised if this were true, given the number of small mammal species (just think of rats for starters). However, I'd be less surprised if the word "biomass" were substituted in there. That I could believe given the fraction of terrestrial (and oceanic for that matter) primary production that we appropriate for ourselves. To further my reply to your question about the taxobox status category PE I made, check this appendix to the recent paper in Bull. B.O.C. "Going or gone: defining 'Possibly Extinct' species to give a truer picture of recent extinctions". NZ wood pigeon

Taxobox

The problem is, it has been vandalized. Users added penis images on three separate occasions on September 4th. As such, it's a high-risk template- making bad edits can affect thousands of pages and can be hard to revert. Suggestions for changes can be made on the talk page with {{editprotected}}. I fully agree that we should assume good faith, but since there has been bad faith, it also has to be recognized that vandalism to this template is extremely dangerous- having nudity on thousands of pages ruins our credibility a lot more than vandalism on a single page. I'd just like to mention that the IRC issue, in other fields, has been at Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Giano/Evidence#Evidence_presented_by_User:Geogre. I'm sure that in other circumstances I wouldn't have seen it as an issue (indeed, in other circumstances I wouldn't be reading RFA most likely), but a trawl through AN/I and AN may lead you to the suspicion that many things which go wrong do so because of a lack of transparency. Anyway, it's certainly a non-issue now: you won't need to get someone else to speedy redirects with histories. Your Panorama template

Hey. Greetings from a fellow Melburnian. :) Eloquence has contacted me a week or two ago to let me know about the panorama template that you had created. I'd like to be able to use it in a number of articles but I have found that in the article on the Royal Crescent it will take over any existing images aligned to the right if they happen to get in the way (it may not do that on your screen. There is another [[template that Eloquence has imported from the German wiki that does a similar job to yours, but I prefer the design of yours and would like to use yours if possible, if it weren't for the issue I just mentioned. I should also mention that I'm terrible with html code, but I fumbled my way into the german template and found the following seems to fix the alignment problem:

Given how little I understand of html, I didn't want to edit your template to try to insert that code without consulting you first. For now, I can just add the code in above the template and that solves the problem for the article in question, but it will get messy to insert that for every panorama that aligns badly, and I tend to make a lot of photographic panoramas!

Oh, and just to confuse things further, I should note that I use Firefox as my default web browser and the scrolling function on your template works fine with it, but I just opened up the Royal Crescent page with IE and the scroll bar did not appear and the panorama only displayed until the end of the visible page... Any ideas? Is it just me?

Horizontal scrolling text box

Hi - Inspired by your template:Panorama I'm attempting to create a horizontally scrolling text box (to replace big bulky navigational templates that are really just simple linear lists). The technique from template:panorama doesn't work in IE (as I think you know). If you know of a technique that might work for text (see Wikipedia talk:Navigational templates#Compressed templates), please let me know (or just show it as an example on the talk page). neglected diseases

Hi, I was looking through your category of neglected diseases and I was wondering is there any references (ie from the WHO or CDC categorizing these listed diseases as being neglected? It seems that those diseases affect the neglected and the poor, which is why they are named as such, but I'm not sure if that term is generally accepted by international standards since there are so many other diseases that can affect the neglected. thanks. I'm not sure who defined the 13 neglected diseases, but the list can be found in various/many places on the net. They were probably defined by the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi). Your bot and the Hungarian Community

Hi. Browsing Wikipedia I came accross your bot, that updates the taxoboxes.

I was wondering, would it be possible to adapt that to huwiki somehow? Could you explain, how does it look up a species on the red list (by english name, or by latin name)? Also does it check first the red list for an article on the wiki, or vice versa?

I'd like to help you adapt the script to huwiki, but looking around I had to realise that we yet have to standardize the taxoboxes (which are exactly the same as here). also I fear we do not have a redirect from the latin name most of the time, so I'll have to first try to make the necessary redirects (and possibly find a way to automatize that).

Would it be possible that you make a list of the translatable phrases, in expectation of a future collaboration after the above mentioned problems are solved?

Hi. Sorry for not answering before, I'we been busy in real life and huwiki (I've become an admin, yuppie :)). I am not that good at coding either, the going through all the latin names would not be a problem (I shall check that all species have a redirect from the latin names). I still would like to localise the phrases and maybe some templates used by your bot. Also the first problem of not all the taxoboxes being in a single template hopefully shall be solved, by the time the translations are complete. Conservation status graphics

Thanks for adding these, very nice work! But wouldn't it be better to use different colors as e.g. BirdLife does? If you don't know them already, they use a sort of "traffic lights" color scale, which goes as follows:

LC - green with white letters

NT - green with pale green letters

(CD - green with pink letters)

VU - yellow

EN - light red

CR - dark red

EW - black with white letters

EX - black with red letters

Thanks for alerting me to this. I believe long ago the conservation statuses here used to have similar colour codings but they were removed because they were somehow considered not to be NPOV. Anyway, my main goal was to make a conservation status make sense without prior knowledge of all the different categories, and i'm not sure the colour coding helps that much when it goes outside of the threatened taxa (VU/EN/CR), e.g. pale green on green doesn't mean much by itself. But perhaps the colours could be used anyway together with the graphic? What would you colourize? the text below, or the "selected" item (yellow box)? Conservation Status change check

Hi, 67.86.121.206 (talk · contribs), who was changing the colors on a huge number of animals back in September, has returned. I reverted the colors and he stopped after I warned him, but then he started changing the conservation status codes. Can you check over the changes to see if their legit changes or if he's just wildly guessing? Thanks for the headsup. I had a look at a number of the changes and they were all putting in false information. You can always check the conservation status from the IUCN reference which has been added to most pages. The IP/user has now been blocked for 6 months. Thanks. I did a look-up on IUCN, but I wasn't familiar enough with the data to be sure. For example, I looked up Gemsbok and the "Year Assessed" was 1996. Looking at the Beastie Bot page, I noticed it said that IUCN published an update in May 2006. It wasn't clear to me if there was an entirely new list or just a partial update. Ah ok. Yep it was a partial update. It can be a bit confusing. The Gemsbok was last assessed in 1996 using 1994 criteria and that assessment appears in the "2006 IUCN Red List" (which is what the iucnredlist.org website is). —Pengo ^{talk · contribs} 06:18, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Pengo. I have taken the liberty of redrawing the conservation status info graphic I found on the Dodo page as SVG in Inkscape. The original file was Status_EX.JPG. I uploaded Status_EX.svg, Status_EW.svg, Status_CR.svg, Status_EN, Status_VU.svg, Status_NT, and Status_LC. If you're interested in why you couldn't find it.. it's because it was hidden in a template (commons:Template:Pengo EPBC) on Commons. When you edit a page there's a list of templates under the edit box... you can click on them to see what they contain.. but, to further complicate things, when you're editing a commons images, you may (or may not) have to go to the commons page of the image to see the description text. Project Interwiki

Hi, I believe the WP Taxoboxes can generate allot of interest in the wikispecies project. The project is undergoing an exciting revamp and I've proposed for a WP article to be featured on the WS main page on a weekly basis. I see you're a native of WP:TX, I propose to include a link to the WS article in all relevant Taxoboxes, essentially serving the same function as {{Commons}}. Perhaps the box can even be headed "WikiSpecies", for a few months so as to give us a wider editorial and bigger readership and generate media interest. I also propose for all the images in the boxes to be embedded with {{click}} leading to the image in WC, so as to generate interest in Wikicommons too. es.Wikipedia has already disallowed uploading images on their Wikipedia. As UtherSRG said, when it was last discussed there was no consensus to add the link to taxobox, and no external links have been added yet to taxoboxes (as they have for company and film infoboxes). Conservation status field question

Can I, should I, and how do I, use the taxobox conservation status field to signify that Banksia rosserae is a "Priority One" taxa under the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950?

Adding it would be appropriate for this species as it only exists in WA so the Act would be covering the "global" population of it (i'm not sure if the act considers whether a species is threatened globally or only within WA(?)). Actually, it appears the status of "Priority 1" is not something within that act (the word "priority" does not appear in the act), but it appears to be something assigned in the "Declared Rare and Priority Flora List" which is published by the Department of Environment and Conservation (Western Australia) [9].. The WCA act has only one category and that's "rare" -- and the article on Banksia rosserae even says it's not listed as "rare and endangered" under the act. So...

Thanks for that. I've had a look into it, and cleared up my misunderstanding.

The WCA 1950 empowered the Minister to declare plants to be "rare flora" for the purposes of the Act, which means that the various legislative measures would apply to those flora. The DEC then rolled out a system of "Conservation Codes for Western Australian Flora" that includes six levels:

• R: Declared Rare Flora - Extant Taxa
• X: Declared Rare Flora - Presumed Extinct Taxa
• P1: Priority One - Poorly Known Taxa
• P2: Priority Two - Poorly Known Taxa
• P3: Priority Three - Poorly Known Taxa
• P4: Priority Four - Rare Taxa

Only the first two of these have been declared rare by the minister, and hence accorded legislative protection under the WCA. The others are used by the DEC, the Western Australian Herbarium, Nuytsia, etc., but have no legislative authority.

Leave it with me for a while; I'll have a think about it, maybe write an article on the Conservation Codes for Western Australian Flora system, and get back to you. My initial view is that the taxobox ought not list a taxon's conservation status if that status has no legislative authority.

The WCA takes a rather different approach to fauna:

"Except to the extent which the Minister declares by notice published in the Government Gazette pursuant to the provisions of this section all fauna is wholly protected throughout the whole of the State at all times."

However, the Act permits the Minister to declare an animal to be "Specially Protected Fauna" under one of four categories:

• "fauna that is rare or likely to become extinct";
• "fauna that is presumed to be extinct";
• "birds that are subject to an agreement between the governments of Australia and Japan relating to the protection of migratory birds and birds in danger of extinction";
• fauna that is in need of special protection, otherwise than for the reasons mentioned".

As far as I know the DEC hasn't developed its own system to reflect this. Hesperian 00:34, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Writing an article on it would be really excellent. I don't see a problem with the authorities not having legislative authority (there's nothing legally binding about IUCN Red List categories). Also I noticed that all the "declared rare" banksia species are also listed under the EPBC with various levels of threatenedness. I don't think its automatic, and I daresay a careful check of the two lists would turn up at least some discrepancies. e.g. a species with a large, secure, main population in South Australia, and a small, threatened, outlying population in Western Australia, might be considered rare and threatened in Western Australia but not in Australia as a whole. I started that page in a hope that people would add more speciesish Latin entries to Wiktionary (it hasn't really happened yet). I know of no systematic way to find out what the Latin means, and the best I've been able to come up with is searching Google with, for example, Chrysiridia latin, and hoping one of those blurbs has the answer. It didn't work for that example, but a search for Urania latin tells me Urania means "heavenly", although the Wiktionary entry would have more-or-less told you that too. You can also try online Latin-English dictionaries (rarely successful). So basically, my (not so helpful) answer is to encourage people with understanding of Latin to contribute to Wiktionary.. or ask on the science help desk. —Pengo 11:48, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I would recommend two great books that are considered standard references: Botanical Latin by W.T. Stearn (fourth edition, published 1992, reprinted by Timber Press 1996) and R.W. I'll try to remember to look Chrysiridia rhipheus up. I think the Latin in the Wiktionary is a good idea, as I just realized we can include plants without articles, so it's easier. Still, I've started a big new research project and just may not have the time--someone keep me updated now and then. California natives can be found in one on-line site, also.
