New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

[edit]

Hello NoonIcarus,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.

Notice

The article LegalEagle (YouTuber) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not a notable person: the sourcing is terrible, none of the secondary sources discuss the subject in any detail. There's no inherent notability either in this puff piece (which had the company he works for linked as an official link), and being nominated for one award doesn't confer it either.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Ecured

[edit]

Hello Noonicarus, I see that you erased +350 times ecured as source, stating 'User generated source. Unreliable.' This is known to be the case for many wikis, just like this wikipedia.org. Nevertheless, it often does not have to be an obstacle to refer to ecured. Either inline or as a general external link related to the topic at the end of the article. Wikipedia about references:' The reliability of a source depends on context. Each source must be carefully weighed to judge whether it is reliable for the statement being made in the Wikipedia article and is an appropriate source for that content.' For you removed ecured 350 times in just a couple of minutes I presume you haven't read one word of the articles that are involved. RenaatPeeters (talk) 12:49, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @RenaatPeeters:, thank you for your time. Per WP:RS/P, Wikipedia should not be used a reference for itself for the states reasons. If the community has decided against its use for references and external links, there shouldn't be a reason to use EcuRed, which besides having user generated content is written focused specifically with the perspective of the Cuban government, particularly when there are many other sources available. This brings issues not only related to verifiability, but to neutrality as well. --NoonIcarus (talk) 15:08, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for replying. I'm going to try to clarify myself because I think I'm not understood. To my believe the policy of wikipedia regarding reliable sources is the context. Context matters tremendously when determining the reliability of sources, and their appropriate use on Wikipedia. Sources which are generally unreliable may still be useful in some situations. For example, even extremely low-quality sources, such as social media, may sometimes be used as self-published sources for routine information about the subjects themselves. Therefor, to my opinion, one can't erase sources without looking at their context. I think you have to agree as this is policy.
Although wikipedia and ecured.cu use the same wiki software, there is more that sets them apart than they have in common. E.g. one of the reasons for not using wikipedia as a source is the anonymity of the editors, as a reason to doubt its reliability. On ecured.cu there aren't anonymous editors. And you wrote: '(ecured) is written focused specifically with the perspective of the Cuban government'. I don't want to discuss this, but one might not forget that wikipedia's editing model facilitates multiple systemic biases: namely, selection bias, inclusion bias, participation bias, and group-think bias, etc. So to me it seems a clumsy argument that ecured can't be used because 'the community has decided against (the) use (of wikipedia.org) for references and external links'.
So I believe it's your personal opinion and not that of the wikipedia community that ecured.cu is that unreliable that all traces should be erased, even without regards to the context as you did on 3 and 4 august 2022. RenaatPeeters (talk) 09:26, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@RenaatPeeters: I was looking forward responding this, sorry for the delayal. Since you're citing WP:CONTEXTMATTERS, I'm wondering how in these cases it's alright to use Ecured, specially when there are other independent and more reliable sources available.
WP:GUNREL specifically mentions that outlets with user-generated content are generally unreliable, and WP:RS/P has a long history of concluding that sources with these characteristics are unreliable: Ancestry.com, Answers.com, Crunchbase, Daily Kos, Discogs, Encyclopaedia Metallum, FamilySearch, Find a Grave, Goodreads, IMDb, Know Your Meme, Last.fm, Quora, Reddit, Urban Dictionary and of course, Wikipedia, just to mention some, and EcuRed's template was deleted for the same reason last year (Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2022 June 9#Template:EcuRed), meaning this is just not my personal opinion. --NoonIcarus (talk) 11:00, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Equatorial Guinea–Kosovo relations for deletion

[edit]
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Equatorial Guinea–Kosovo relations is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Equatorial Guinea–Kosovo relations until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Coup template

[edit]

Considering the recent edits at Template:Coup d'état, there needs to a clean-up. Again. --Minoa (talk) 23:51, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Minoa: Af, just noticed. Do you think bring the discussion to the involved users will help? We could restore to the last stable version, but I also don't want to be too drastic. --NoonIcarus (talk) 23:55, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You may decide, as I am too depressed to handle modern political topics, especially since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. So I decided to flag the issue for your attention. --Minoa (talk) 00:11, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry to hear that, and truth be told I don't really blame you. Heads up, though, as hope is the last thing we lose. I have restored a stable version and notified involved editors, hopefully it will go alright. Best wishes! --NoonIcarus (talk) 01:13, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

[edit]

Hello NoonIcarus,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Reminders

Hey @NoonIcarus, I stummbled on your article while reviewing redirects and was wondering if you wanted to expand this article a bit and submit it to WP:DYK? Dr vulpes (💬📝) 05:32, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr vulpes: Wow, that'd be awesome! I'm not sure in which ways to precisely eexpand it, but I'm sure there's plenty of material and I'll take a look at the new added sources. Many thanks in advance! --NoonIcarus (talk) 09:03, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@NoonIcarus Sounds good, I'll see what I can add to it after work today. I was able to find some peer reviewed sources and a couple books that I already added. I'll check some of the newspaper archives if they're online and see if I can find anything interesting there. It's always fun to go into the archives, you never know what you'll find! Dr vulpes (💬📝) 17:02, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr vulpes: Absolutely :) Thank you very much! --NoonIcarus (talk) 22:33, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @NoonIcarus just wanted to touch base real quick and say I didn't forget about this. Work ran over today but I have a half day tomorrow so I'll make this a priority. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 05:59, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr vulpes: Sorry for the delay, I wasn't able to reach back until now. I've nominated the article for DYK before a week after its creation passed and it was turned ineligible, but I still want to expand the article and possibly add an alternat hook. Looking forward to know your thoughts :) Kind regards, --NoonIcarus (talk) 11:04, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Unicorn hunting

[edit]

On 12 July 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Unicorn hunting, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that unicorn hunting is the practice by a couple, usually a man and a woman, of seeking a third partner for the relationship, usually a bisexual woman? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Unicorn hunting. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Unicorn hunting), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Quick note

[edit]

When bringing closure reviews to the administrator's noticeboard, it's generally good practice to let the person whose close you are appealing know that you are bringing them to the noticeboard. I've done so here for you, but please remember to do this if you appeal a closure going forward.

Happy editing!

Hi, kind regards. Thank you very much, and I am so sorry: switching between three discussions at the same time, and with the closer saying that an appeal could be started, I forgot or took for granted that they were informed. Probably I won't need to in the near future, but I'll definitely take more care with it in the future. Once again, sorry and thanks: Best wishes! --NoonIcarus (talk) 21:25, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dancing Devils of Yare

[edit]

Information icon Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. A page you created or have recently made significant changes to, Dancing Devils of Yare, may not conform to some of Wikipedia's guidelines for pages, so it has been blanked and redirected to Dancing devils of Corpus Christi. Three typical reasons for this are that: (1) the article's subject appears to fail our notability guidelines; (2) the article is unsourced; or (3) the sources used in the article are unreliable. The page's history is preserved and it is possible to restore the article: If you believe that this page should remain included on Wikipedia or that this action was taken in error, then you may revert the edit that blanked and redirected the page.

Please see the edit summary for a more detailed rationale: Special:Diff/1171207424. Sincerely —Alalch E. 17:47, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Can you explain the removal of this source and the removal of this information? The book from the first edit appears fine and the content removed from your second edit was easily accessible through an archive URL. WMrapids (talk) 21:16, 6 September 2023 (UTC)WMrapids (talk · contribs) is a confirmed sock puppet[reply]

@WMrapids: Hi, kind regards. In the case of the second removal, since it happened over two years ago, I can't remember precisely, but as you well pointed out, the link was dead and I think I could not find the archived link, and RCTV's source did not mention the Pope's visit. As for Bart Jones' book, it is noticeably biased, to the point of affecting its reliability. I can provide examples of it if needed, but in the meantime I can start by providing this interview in Venezuelanalysis: Q & A With Bart Jones, Author of the New Chavez Biography "Hugo!". --NoonIcarus (talk) 09:54, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Simón (2023 film)

[edit]

On 15 September 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Simón (2023 film), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the nightclub scene in Simón used only 30 extras instead of the originally intended 250? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Simón (2023 film). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Simón (2023 film)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New pages patrol newsletter

[edit]

Hello NoonIcarus,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Category redirects are created differently than article redirects. Please look at the code on this page so that the proper template can be used if you find yourself needing to create one in the future. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 23:01, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I removed the request due to lack of notability. The Inverse article is entirely about Disco Elysium, not about her. The EPL article only mentions her in brief, and the Pohjarannik article seems to be about someone else entirely unrelated. TarkusABtalk/contrib 18:39, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@TarkusAB: That's alright, I made the request just in case more coverage about her could be found and it was deemed appropriate for an article. Thank you kindly for the notification. Best regards, --NoonIcarus (talk) 19:58, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

WP:VENRS that you cited while removing a ref from various articles (such as this) doesn't apply to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Could you please self-revert? Thanks. M.Bitton (talk) 11:20, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@M.Bitton: Kind regards, thank you for your message. My removals were based in part in my experience in using the foreign affairs ministry as a reference in the past. I created all of Venezuela's bilateral relations articles in Spanish, where I often had to use mppre.gob.ve but would usually stumble upon mistakes for even basic facts, such as dates. Government sites in Venezuela are also often outdated, making them unreliable for data such as embassies and visa information. These articles could really benefit from independent sources. However, if you remain unconvinced, I can proceed with the self revert. Best wishes, --NoonIcarus (talk) 11:29, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be best if you could self-revert. Best, M.Bitton (talk) 11:34, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Kind regards, NoonIcarus (talk) 11:37, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a reason why you self-reverted just one of them? M.Bitton (talk) 11:43, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@M.Bitton: My bad, I thought that you asked for only that specific self-revert. I would have liked if you could have waited for my response, though, or at least 24 hours before reverting: your changes have included articles about Venezuela, and you have not responded to my unreliability concerns. I can add the ministry as an entry to WP:VENRS and provide alternative references to some of the articles, but the referencing in the pages must improve. --NoonIcarus (talk) 16:29, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't wait because I was aware of the fact that subsequent edits to the articles would have made the reversion more difficult than it has to be. Also, I honestly didn't think you'd mind. The reliability of a source depends on context and has to be judged on a case by case basis. Adding it to WP:VENRS won't make it unreliable, let alone blacklist it (unlike WP:RSN, that list is just an essay). Best, M.Bitton (talk) 23:12, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@M.Bitton: Many thanks for the information. While WP:VENRS is an essay, it is still a case of WP:LOCALCONSENSUS, and concerns were still raised about the references reliability. At any rate, I will try to provide alternative references in the future and continue approaching the articles in a case to case basis. Kind regards, --NoonIcarus (talk) 10:17, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled right granted

[edit]

Hi NoonIcarus, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! œ 08:20, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ecured

[edit]

EcuRed is perfectly valid as an WP:EL, which follows a different policy from WP:RS. Also, next time you remove thousands of references in hundreds of articles, maybe you could replace them with the sources listed in EcuRed (if any) or others, rather than leaving a mess behind. Many obscure Cuban cultural topics are pretty much only accessible online thanks to librarians from Cuba who wrote those EcuRed articles, with proper sources and all, including references to birth certificates and local publications only available in print at their libaries. Just my two cents. Neodop (talk) 02:04, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Neodop: Hi. Sorry, I forgot to respond to this. As a source with user generated content, I frankly see little value of its inclusion, even as an external source, and at some points it has created even more problems than those solved. Many of the articles in question had to mention two birth dates or years due to conflicting accounts provided by EcuRed. There are surely many other available resources online other than EcuRed for these historical sources. Best wishes, --NoonIcarus (talk) 21:05, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

November Articles for creation backlog drive

[edit]

Hello NoonIcarus:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 1200 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Coatrack reminder

[edit]

You may be incorrectly using the essay WP:COATRACK to justify your removal of information from articles. CVDX previously raised a concern about this behavior, which still has not been addressed. As a reminder from WP:COATRACK: "Material that is supported by a reliable, published source whose topic is directly related to the topic of the article, is not using the article as a coatrack." WMrapids (talk) 07:21, 3 December 2023 (UTC)WMrapids (talk · contribs) is a confirmed sock puppet[reply]

@WMrapids: Hi. If I recall correctly, you're referring to this edit [1] in the Rupununi uprising article, which I have already explained at Talk:Rupununi uprising#Guyana–Venezuela relations. As you mentioned, this information is unrelated to the topic at hand, and which is particularly troublesome when it seeks to portray Venezuela as an aggressor instead of merely provided more context about the territorial dispute. I'd appreciate it if you didn't link comments with different context to these questions (both here and in general), specially because in this case CVDX only asked for more information and wasn't a complaint or concern per se. Regards, --NoonIcarus (talk) 19:23, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
When did I mention that this info on Venezuela's history of aggression towards Guyana being unrelated to its possible arming of rebels? Also, if multiple users are questioning or asking for clarification on your use of WP:COATRACK in edit summaries, then respectively, that is on you. If you could be more clear and properly justify your claims of coatrack material, then there wouldn't be an issue. WMrapids (talk) 19:33, 10 December 2023 (UTC)WMrapids (talk · contribs) is a confirmed sock puppet[reply]
@WMrapids: CVDX's message was just: In the interest of clarity, can you explain specifically what information/sections you consider to be examples of WP:COATRACK?. It really doesn't seem like questioning, as much as a simple request for more information.
As I have mentioned multiple times, the inclusion is improper since most of the claims of Venezuelan involvement mostly come from the Guyanese government (an authoritarian one, mind you), as well as the WP:SYNTH issues, where sources discussing the Rupununi uprising don't mention the facts that you included about Venezuela, and viceversa. --NoonIcarus (talk) 19:54, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"most of the claims of Venezuelan involvement mostly come from the Guyanese government" You are misrepresenting what the sources say. The sources provided reported Venezuelan involvement in their own voice. Also, the sources directly mention the Rupununi uprising. I don't know what you are reading or maybe missing. WMrapids (talk) 20:15, 10 December 2023 (UTC)WMrapids (talk · contribs) is a confirmed sock puppet[reply]

Venezuelan historical administrative claims

[edit]

Hi NoonIcarus, on the Guayana Esequiba talkpage you stated that the disputed area was historically included in the Delta Amacuro and Bolívar states. I was wondering if you had any relevant sources on the matter? The article says the same, but the sources cited do not appear to support this. On Venezuelan maps I've seen the area has always been separated into its own zona en reclamacion region, rather than as part of existing states. At the very least, the flag on the right indicates heavily that the claim is not linked to Delta Amacuro. CMD (talk) 17:25, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Chipmunkdavis: Hi, kind regards. The sources that I provided are the same as in Spanish, which are the state constitutions from both Bolívar and Delta Amacuro, although admittedly these are primary sources and I'm sure that better references can be found. Please let me know if I can help in this regard. Best wishes, --NoonIcarus (talk) 19:25, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

May I please ask why the category of far right politics was removed from Jiminez? He is referred to as right wing in a foreign policy article here: https://foreignpolicy.com/2012/01/23/remembering-the-fall-of-a-venezuelan-strongman/ Firekong1 (talk) 22:42, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thank you for your message and sorry for the delay. My reason was mostly WP:CATV: the article simply does not mention any reference to far-right politics. The FP article similarly does not mention this, simply describing Pérez Jiménez as a traditional, U.S.-backed right-wing caudillo in the style of Cuba’s Batista. This is covered in categories such as Category:Venezuelan anti-communists. At any rate, his party New Order is already included in the "Far-right political parties in Venezuela" category. If there are sources delving into more detail, I would be happy to complete this information. Happy holidays! --NoonIcarus (talk) 11:38, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response, no need to apologize. I apologize if it seemed like I was attempting to shove a partisan view into the article. I was mistaken adding it as I was subconsciously thinking of other right wing leaders backed by America who have been labeled as far right, such as Pinochet. I’m glad you cleared up that misunderstanding, and I will gladly find legitimate sources that describe Jiminez as far right in good conscience. Oh, and happy holidays to you to as well! Firekong1 (talk) 14:58, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Firekong1: Not at all! No worries, I did not see it that way. Latin America's dictatorships could have different policies and sometimes even be at odds with each others, but all of them were autocracies, so it's totally understandable. Pérez Jiménez policies (especifically economic ones) arguably can be in the middle of the political left/right spectrum, but he would easily fit in the fascism category. I would be eager to help because if there are further sources (and I'm sure that there are) there would be plenty of content that could be used to expand on political views. Happy New Year and happy editing! --NoonIcarus (talk) 23:21, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! I just wanted to clarify my intention with you because I have made the same mistake in the past, and some Wikipedia editors were not as kind and lenient as you, because they assumed my editing was for a disruptive intent to cause issues rather than a genuine conviction based on legitimate observable evidence. And thank you for your help, I will find more references to support my statements. It’s not just Jiminez that fits in the fascist and far-right category though. Thanks for your statement and your assistance And happy new year to you as well! :) Firekong1 (talk) 23:50, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! People sometimes can get jumpy in these moments, particularly when it's about politics, but one of Wikipedia's policies warns about not biting newcomers. If you explain your reasons for the edits or any confusion that you could have, everything should be alright :) Keep calm and carry on: there are many editors that will be happy to help or to guide, and editing can become really fulfilling.
That said, you can let me know if you have other any other questions regarding "rules", editing, or so on. Volunteers are always needed and welcome. Best wishes, --NoonIcarus (talk) 23:59, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Liz María Márquez

[edit]

In the recently created article Liz María Márquez I'm puzzled as to why it states "Ulacio was elected as alternate deputy for the…" Is "Ulacio" a typo maybe, or am I just missing something? Happy New Year, BTW. — Hebrides (talk) 19:31, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
