WikiCup 2020 July newsletter

The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
  • Botswana The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
  • England Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.

Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, Denmark MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page.  — Amakuru (talk) 11:09, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Can you give me any suggestions/feedback?

I started contributing on Wikipedia just 2 months back. I done few edits and create few articles. Am I doing any constructive work? What should be done? What is better? I previously talked with you with different name. Can you provide any type of feedback or suggestion for betterment of my volunteering based on my few edits?? Thanks in advance for your time and attention.❯❯❯Praveg A=9.8 08:08, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

I have a confusion to upload this image on wikipedia commons. Can I upload this under GODL or any similar license??❯❯❯Praveg A=9.8 12:31, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

I will later comment on your work after checking them in detail. Regarding image, you should not upload this copyrighted image owned by GNNL. GoDL license applies anly to the central govt., not state govts or companies owned by the state govts. So please do not upload it. Nizil (talk) 18:15, 12 July 2020 (UTC)
@Pravega: You are doing good IMO. Keep focused on such topics. No specific recommendations but work on WP:MOS. Use better and more academic references where available. Regards,-Nizil (talk) 06:09, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Regarding Flugel Peter Source for Content on Niruben Amin Page

Hi Nizil,

We saw your revert regarding the content on the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niruben_Amin page, which has been given the reference of the Flugel Peter book. We would like to bring to your notice that the same book has no reference for the marriage of this spiritual master. If you glance at the book, you will not find any authentic reference for the same. It has been just written there without any authentic reference. Okay, we agree that the book is an academic reference but the book itself has no authentic reference for the same. Further, only one academic reference does not suffice, right? There should be other such authentic resources that confirm about her being married. Don't you think so? Can you look for other references online, which can confirm this fact? This will help us to be rational and fair. We humbly seek to resolve this matter with mutual consensus.

Hello, please do not forget to sign your comments by using -~~~~. Flugel is the best academic source available for Akram Vignan topics. It contains original research so there is no reference in regarding marriage and all. If you can find any more academic sources, please point me to it. If you have an academic source which mentions the opposite thing (no marriage), I will be happy to include it as well. We do not always need multiple references to establish the same thing. More is better but single is good enough. Hope it clarifies. Regards,-Nizil (talk) 06:15, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
Dear Nizil, we had requested you to look for more sources supporting the marriage information, not for including in the page but for you to find out how true it is. We cannot depend solely on just one external or international academic resource in terms of someone's personal facts. As a genuine academic source, it cannot state anything about a saint’s or master’s life; it has to be verified, which is not in the Flugel’s PDF book. Luckily, we had approached Flugel regarding this matter a few months ago and the author accepted that he had no idea about it and said that he will delete the matter. However, since the lockdown, the author is unreachable. So, we are stuck here. Further, we have no academic sources regarding the same.Dipalig (talk) 09:50, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

Who is "we" here? There can not be any account on behalf of others. Everybody work in their own capacity. An statement in article needs a reliable source. The Flugel reference clearly states abouy marriage so it is included. I can not find any retraction of the statements released by Peter Flugel. If he had not varified facts as you state, he should publish retraction of statements. Until then we can only rely on the source. Nizil (talk) 10:07, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

First of all, I am sorry for writing 'we'. It was written as I am learning from someone how to write on Wiki. Talking about your reply, I could draw a conclusion that the academic resources have the topmost weightage. So, I would like to learn or know a few things more, from your experience, as I am still a learner:
1) Is it so that the type of source is more important than its content?
2) Why should we believe that an academic source always gives the best and the right content? Is there a proof for this? A proof of its research methodology is a set of proper references, isn't it? If they are missing for facts, then also should we believe them to be correct?
3) Don't you feel that proper MLA, APA, and Chicago style references should be given for facts in academic articles or books to prove that the content written is well researched?
Thanking you in advance... Dipalig (talk) 14:51, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
Wikipedians follow WP:RS guidelines. Thats it. If you have a problem with that perticular reference, you may ask community to establish its reliability at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. Regards,-Nizil (talk) 11:07, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

1979 Machchhu dam failure

I couldn't find enough reliable sources for the incident. Can I add some content citing Safari magazine[1]? Is it considered as reliable source? Or the content challenged and removed?❯❯❯Praveg A=9.8 08:15, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Better cite scholarly work. What exactly you will write with Safari citation? Safari is like tertiary source and may be considered unreliable by some editors.-Nizil (talk) 18:17, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
I want to add about background of this incident(how the plot for the incident created), communication failure, Aftermath of the incident. The current version has very no or very little amount of content.❯❯❯Praveg A=9.8 20:13, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
I think there is a book called No One Had a Tongue to Speak about Machchhu incident. It could be helpful. Search for more academic sources as well. Nizil (talk) 02:47, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi, your time is running out for submitting a QPQ for this nomination. You have until August 12. Yoninah (talk) 00:16, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Please add this into article with rephrasing.

He [Manilal] expressed the dark despair at its failure, which is paradoxically dissolved in the consolation of philosophy, in his famous gazal 'Kain lākho nirāshāmā amar āshā chhupāi chhe' (At the heart of a million failures is hidden an undying hope).[2]

Thanks. --Gazal world (talk) 14:26, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

In this poem, Manilal conveyed the despairs at the failure and the end of those despairs in the solace of philosophy.[3]
How is this?-Nizil (talk) 05:40, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

Talk about Kansara Caste.

First of all, I am really thankful to you for creating a page of our caste, i.e., Kansara on Wikipedia. So let me focus towards the point that in the Wikipedia page named Kansara, I added more content which consisted Introduction, History, etc. from Kalika Purana. Also I added some pictures too. But you deleted this all. Now, I will again add the content with proper citations. So, I kindly request you to please do not undo the contents which I will add in future. Thank You! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Devanshu888 (talkcontribs) 11:24, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

@Devanshu888:, thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. I have reverted your addition because you have not provided the references for the text you added. There are certain guidelines for writing in Wikipedia. Please read WP:V and WP:RS to know these guidelines. Without any references, no addition to the article will be accepted. So please read the guidelines before adding the text in the article Kansara. -Nizil (talk) 06:30, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
I have not because the sources are not online. But still I will try to find it online and will add proper citations wherever needed. Devanshu 12:35, 17 August 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Devanshu888 (talkcontribs)
@Devanshu888:, Please find citations first before readding the new information. Add only those information which have verifiable and reliable references according to WP:RS. Note that poor quality or unreliable references will not be accepted. Regards,-Nizil (talk) 11:01, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • Free Hong Kong Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
  • IndonesiaHaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
  • England Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.

Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Rules for companies and organisations are bit strict. See WP:NCORP for criteria. Though there are some references, there is lack of depth in the coverage. The current article (especially Overview section) looks like an advertisement and it can be reduced to stub article with a simple copyediting. If there is not much info on the company in reliable sources, there should be no article on it. Few references are also not reliable sources so please remove them. e.g.FounderIndia. WikiCup 2020 November newsletter

The 2020 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round going down to the wire. Our new Champion is England Lee Vilenski (submissions), the runner-up last year, who was closely followed by England Gog the Mild (submissions). In the final round, Lee achieved 4 FAs and 30 GAs, mostly on cue sport topics, while Gog achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on important battles and wars, which earned him a high number of bonus points. Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions) was in third place with 4 FAs and 8 GAs on football topics, with New York (state) Epicgenius (submissions) close behind with 19 GAs and 16 DYK's, his interest being the buildings of New York.

The other finalists were Gondor Hog Farm (submissions), Indonesia HaEr48 (submissions), Somerset Harrias (submissions) and Free Hong Kong Bloom6132 (submissions). The final round was very productive, and besides 15 FAs, contestants achieved 75 FAC reviews, 88 GAs and 108 GAN reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2021 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Bhutan India relations

I generally agree with your expressed view, but there is some confusion as to what exactly the Govt of India has requested from WMF. Since it seems that it is about the Aksai-Chin issue, the letter appears motivated and any proactive moves by us will have much wider implications throughout wikipedia. So let us not be hasty. Cheers Aghore (talk) 05:42, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

There is no hurry. I requested the change in accordance with our neutrality guidelines. We need to fix this for our guidelines. Political bickering is never heard by Wikipedians. There is long history people complaining about Wikipedia to Indian Government on Twitter. I think they took it too seriously this time. Yeh, but don't forget that map needs correction. @Redmu3212:, thank you for engaging in discussion. First, I am not Wikipedia administrator and I have not deleted Eidgah article either. So you should contact the concerned person for it. Ragarding title, Janmasthan and Janmabhumi are the same thing. Both mean 'place of birth'. So there is no point in changing the name. "Janmasthan" is kept because the official website of the temple call itself "Janmasthan" temple. Anyway both are same thing so it is irrelevant. If you have any compelling argument for changing name, engage in the discussion on talkpage where others will participate. I think the name change is unnecessary. Nizil (talk) 11:40, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Krishna Janmabhoomi also redirect to the same article. Nizil (talk) 11:53, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Regarding "still exist" which you keep adding, it is already clear that it still exist so there is no need to write it. It is already mentioned in the next sentences that the new temple complex was built adjacent to "mosque". So it is self-evident that it is still there. Nizil (talk) 12:01, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

still exist then let it be there to make it easy to understand — Preceding unsigned comment added by Redmu3212 (talkcontribs) 21:29, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Iqbal Qureshi

Hi Nizil, may I ask you to watch over this while I attempt to figure it out? Whispyhistory (talk) 21:45, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

@Whispyhistory: Added to watchlist for 3 months. I will improve wherever needed.-Nizil (talk) 05:24, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
Thank you...apparently there were 2 Iqbal's and their filmography are sometimes mixed up eg Sipahsalar (1956). Whispyhistory (talk) 06:27, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
@Whispyhistory: Ohh, I did not know that. Please correct mistakes. -Nizil (talk) 06:00, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
As always thanks for your edits. Some of the references were confusing. Whispyhistory (talk) 22:02, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi.. (personal question)

Where do you stay? I stay at around tardeo Mumbai...

@Rishabh.rsd: Well, it is not a good place to reveal my personal information. Most Wikipedians do not reveal much about their personal lives. Though I can tell you that I am interested in Gujarat and Gujarati culture. I am familiar with and interested in Jainism topics as well. Feel free to collaborate with me or ask for help/advice. Wikipedia have plenty of places where help are available. Do read guidelines and policies or at least give them some cursory glance so you can learn. I will be happy to help. Rajputisation

Hi Nizil, on a number of Rajput clan pages (Jethwa, Jadeja possibly others) there is a user who is adding a pre-written paragraph about Rajputisation regardless of whether it applies to the specific clan or not using the same sources in each (again regardless of whether it is related or not). Is there anyway to contest this?TSAray (talk) 21:36, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

@TSAray:, Sorry for late reply. Please give me link of article or revision where it happened. So I can investigate. -Nizil (talk) 06:52, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
@Nizil Shah:, Apologies for late reply, had been off wiki. This seems to have been removed although the Jadeja article remains contentious as ever.TSAray (talk) 13:49, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
@Nizil Shah: Please see this article on the Jethwa dynasty where this issue still exists. TSAray (talk) 00:32, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Iqbal Qureshi

On 17 January 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Iqbal Qureshi, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Iqbal Qureshi composed the music for the 1964 film Cha Cha Cha, the first Indian film to feature Western dance? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Iqbal Qureshi. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Iqbal Qureshi), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (ie, 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
