A message from Yves155
Hello, you deleted my edit to the Central Park Carousel. However, it is true that the Trump Organization runs the carousel, and that its contract is set to expire in April 2021. The confusion might be that the Friedsam Memorial Carousel is an alternative name for the Central Park Carousel.

Best Regards, Yves155 (talk) 12:55, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Yves155: Thanks for reaching out to me about this! Allow me to apologize for reverting your edits. The issue was none of the sources you used ([1] included) said anything about Trump, nor was it clear where to get that information. Meanwhile the Washington Post source you've just provided is both reliable and supports everything you claimed, so that's the type of source we want to use :) Now that we've got this cleared this up, I've gone through and re-added your additions with the WaPo source. The exception is Lasker Rink. I don't see mention of that in the sources you provided, so I have not restored your edit to that page. If you can find a good source, of course feel free to re-add it. Sorry again for the confusion. Best, — MusikAnimal talk 15:44, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi MusikAnimal, you blocked a disruptive IP and i thank you for that. However, the IP is repeatedly removing your block message from his talk page, is this allowaed ? me and other users are trying to add back your block message on his talk page but he reverts us continuously. Your opinion about that ? Best regards.---Wikaviani (talk) 17:18, 8 June 2018 (UTC) Wikaviani (talk) 17:18, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Normally, yes, removing block notices is allowed. The only thing that blocked users are not allowed to remove is a declined unblock request. However, in this case, I've reblocked with TPA removed, not for the removal of the block notice, but for the other stuff they put on their talk page. I restored the block notice as a part of that. - Ok, thank you very much for blocking this WP:NOTHERE IP and for the information about what a user can remove (or not) from his talk page. Take care. Best regards.---Wikaviani (talk) 17:31, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
- Ditto to Writ Keeper. Revoking talk page access was bound to happen, but agreed they are allowed to blank this type of notice. More at WP:BLANKING. The message is for them, after all, and by blanking it indicates they've read it. However it's possible this IP is shared, in which case the block notice probably should remain there. In my opinion unless it's something important for others to see (like declined unblock request), it's fine to let them remove it instead of wasting your time trying to restore it when the page has little to no visibility — MusikAnimal talk 17:35, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

CSD malfunction
Back in December 2015, we stumbled on a CSD malfunction that was attributed to the Wiki software. I've come across the exact same issue again - see User:TimSGearhart/sandbox. The page was tagged as G12 back on April 16, and yet it remains visible. I checked the Category:Candidates for speedy deletion page and did not see the page listed on the general page or the specific G12 page.--Cahk (talk) 01:48, 9 June 2018 (UTC)
- Wow. I see the Phabriactor task still has not been marked as resolved. I have commented with your findings. I've also made a null edit to the page which forced it to recategorize. I think it's possible to run a query to find other speedy'd pages that aren't in the category (going by template translcusions). I will try to look into that soon. Thanks for letting me (or someone) know that this issue has resurfaced! — MusikAnimal talk 15:08, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

Script request
Would it be poosible for you to write a script the would make an "RfA" link appear to the left of the "Page Curation" one? The idea is that it would turn into a "there is a new RfA" link similar to the "you have new messages" TP link when there are new messages. And also make the link revert back to it's normal appearance when clicked. I keep not seeing the watchlist notif, so that's why I'm putting forward this idea. L293D (☎ • ✎) 19:56, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- Certainly possible, but I'm afraid I don't have time for it, sorry! :( Have you considered transcluding {{User:Cyberpower678/RfX Report}} on your userpage (or talk page)? This is how I find out that there are new RfAs — MusikAnimal talk 20:18, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- In the Wikipedia app for Android or iOS users can create reading lists. The reading lists can be seen on different devices if you are logged in to your account. There is now a browser extension so you can add pages to your reading list from a web browser. At the moment it works with Firefox and Chrome. [2]
- There is a new version of Pywikibot. Pywikibot is a tool to automate tasks on MediaWiki wikis. [3]
Problems
- The MonoBook skin was changed to make it work better for mobile users. This caused some problems. The change was rolled back to fix them. The new version is now back on the wikis. MonoBook users can opt out from the new responsive design. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. For most wikis this will happen on 18 June. For the rest it will happen on 25 June. [5][6]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 June. It will be on all wikis from 14 June (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the Readers Web team IRC office hour. There you can discuss tools to contribute on the mobile web for the existing MediaWiki skins. The meeting will be on 18 June at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 12 June at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 13 June at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You will be able to move local wiki files to Commons and keep their original data intact. This is planned to come to the first wikis in June.

- Indeed the "job" to populate the data appears to have failed on 14 June. I've reported this to the Analytics team at phab:T197542, and they should be looking into it soon if they're not already. I'm mostly confident they will be able to backfill the data. — MusikAnimal talk 15:09, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Regarding "already done" issue, i think there should be an option to stop the bot from doing that. Just a few days ago there was an incident where an editor kept adding tl to already done {{tl|already done}}, and bot kept on adding already done. I mean, at first bot should comment it is already done, but then there should be some option to stop it from repeating it. —usernamekiran(talk) 12:42, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Syntax highlighting has been a beta feature on Wikimedia wikis with text written from left to right. It is now a normal feature. It is based on CodeMirror. [8]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 19 June at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 20 June at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Some old web browsers will not be able to read the Wikimedia wikis. This is because they use an insecure way to connect to them. This means that we get less security for everyone else too. This affects about 0.08% of all traffic to the Wikimedia wikis. This affects for example those who read Wikipedia on a PlayStation 3. [9][10]
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. Because there is no new MediaWiki version this week it will happen on 25 June for most wikis. For the rest it will happen in early July. [11][12]
- All wikis that have not already done so will switch to use the Remex parsing library on 5 July. This is to replace Tidy. You can help fix remaining errors. [13]

Revdel request
Hey MA! Wondering if I could trouble you for a hand with a copyright revdel on Draft:The Prom (musical). It's another editor's creation that was draftified and marked for revdel by the NPP reviewer last week; I added sources to establish notability but I'd rather not move it back to mainspace 'til the copyvio's been fully resolved. If you have a chance, I'd be grateful for the assistance! Thanks much. Innisfree987 (talk) 23:34, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

Can you please undelete Relocation of Marine Corps Air Station (as a redirect to Relocation of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma). DYK for Domino Park
On 29 June 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Domino Park, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that one of New York City's newest parks was partially built using industrial materials from an abandoned sugar factory? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Domino Park. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Domino Park), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Hi MusikAnimal, I'm writing you here because I've seen this is the main wiki where you edit and because here you're an abusefilter, checkuser and sysop.
I think I've found a few proxies used recently by a single user who hides behind them to make similar unconstructive edits in different pages, and a few socks used to do the same kind of edits created recently.
If I write here the suspicious proxies IP ranges, will you be able to block them (as they're forbidden on Wikipedia) and do the same with the socks created over such ranges (as they weren't created for reasons according to community standards)?
Let me know, please, I'd like to be helpful to the project by reporting vandals in bad faith who use proxies and socks such as this one! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kbtudios0121 (talk • contribs) 16:24, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

- An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
- A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.
- Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
- Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
- IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June). This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
- Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

- @Amorymeltzer: Analytics came up with this production query back when we first asked in February 2017. I simply re-ran it myself, this time there were 1211 sysops and 240 with 2FA enabled. — MusikAnimal talk 01:00, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- WebM video files have smaller file size but still be of the same quality. Creating WebM files will take longer time. [19]
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. This was supposed to already have happened but was delayed. For most wikis this will happen on 9 July. For the rest it will happen on 16 July. [20]
- All wikis now use the Remex parsing library instead of Tidy. This could cause errors. You can help fix the errors. [21]
Problems
- When you rolled back an edit it could get both the

tags. This has been fixed. [22] - Rollbacks from autopatrolled users were not marked as patrolled. This has been fixed. [23]
Changes later this week
- When you edit a link in the visual editor there will be two separate buttons to change which page the link goes to (target) or its text (label). [24][25]
- On the mobile version you can find a link to an editor's contributions from their user page. Now this will work even if they haven't created a user page. [26]
- When you edit a discussion on the mobile version you sometimes get your signature automatically added. This will now not happen if you have already added a signature manually. This is to avoid double signatures. [27]
- Structured discussions toolbars will have more style options. [28]
- When you look at Wikimedia code in Gerrit there will be a new interface. It is on by default for new users. This is also true for developers. This is to make it easier to understand what is happening. [29]

Future changes
- Today all administrators can edit CSS and JavaScript for the entire wiki. There will be a new user group for editing CSS and JavaScript. Administrators will no longer automatically be able to do this. This is because it is a security risk when all administrator accounts can edit JavaScript even if they never plan to or do not know how it works. You can read more. [30]
- Page previews will be on by default for new accounts. [31]

Proxy IPs
Hey Muzik, in the history of AIV, you can find a number of IPs that me and probably others reported this morning that are proxies. Some of them are only blocked a month or less as of now, so I'm not sure if you may want to extend them. I can try and gather them all if you need. Home Lander (talk) 17:51, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
- I wouldn't want to influence MA in any way, but I would point out for those not aware that the IPs are almost entirely VPN Gate, which is a very dynamic set of IPs. For that reason, when I block them I'll typically choose a month. Several months might be reasonable, and if they've been blocked before then maybe even longer. But they are mostly quite dynamic. Thanks for spotting them HL. You'll find a bunch in my blocking log :) -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:59, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
- Understood, thanks for the pointers. — MusikAnimal talk 18:04, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Hey zzuuzz, no problem. I looked through my entries at AIV just now and found this one that's only blocked a week. All the others appear to be a month or longer. Home Lander (talk) 18:05, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
- I have another pointer for you, which you might find useful at this time. There's a different idiot running around on ctm.net (Macau) adding porn images to pages. I've generally been treating them to /17 size blocks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:07, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
- Although I blocked some earlier today only for 31 hrs, I think a month is minimum, as they tend to sometimes return to old proxies, such as here. Widr (talk) 18:41, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Lists with one term
Hi MusikAnimal, in ptwiki we are cleaning and deleting so many lists of one term that was traslated from this wiki, like List of volcanoes in Saint Lucia. This type of list is allowed here or can open a deletion request? Mr. Fulano 🐸 20:42, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not sure, to be honest. If there is a rule for single-item lists, it's probably somewhere in Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lists. I agree that article in particular seems unnecessary and could be deleted. — MusikAnimal talk 20:50, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
- I didn't see any saying about it in your rules, but I think that a list with one term doesn't exists. And has another list like that: List of volcanoes in Martinique and List of volcanoes in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Mr. Fulano 🐸 21:30, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
NPR Newsletter No.12 30 July 2018

Hello MusikAnimal, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!
- June backlog drive
Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.
- New technology, new rules
- New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
- Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
- Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
- Editathons
- Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
- The Signpost
- The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.
Go here to remove your name if you wish to opt-out of future mailings. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 00:00, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

css selector headache
Hi MA, can you take a look at a headache I'm hitting? Some of the "destructive" buttons in monobook still have bad contrast, I fixed some a ways back but am having a problem selecting some. A fairly common example appears in the "block" button a seen here on testwiki. I've blanked out my examples in testwiki:Mediawiki:Monobook.css for a fresh try. Thanks in advance if you have the time! — xaosflux Talk 03:44, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
- Woah, this looks so different from vector! I'm guessing the colours changed with the recent responsive Monobook styles? The OOUI standard doesn't seem to be a thing. Anyway, the text colour is set by
.oo-ui-buttonElement-framed.oo-ui-flaggedElement-destructive > .oo-ui-buttonElement-button
so you could try overriding that. — MusikAnimal talk 04:06, 31 July 2018 (UTC)- Thanks for the hints, no joy - tried lots of variants at testwiki:User:Xaosflux/monobook.css. Wonder if that special page is being overwritten in other code? — xaosflux Talk 10:25, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – August 2018
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2018).
- After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
- Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.
- The WMF Anti-Harassment Tools team is seeking input on the second set of wireframes for the Special:Block redesign that will introduce partial blocks. The new functionality will allow you to block a user from editing a specific set of pages, pages in a category, a namespace, and for specific actions such as moving pages and uploading files.

Hi there! There's a question for you on translatewiki:Thread:Support/Deployment. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:34, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'm not getting pings there for some reason — MusikAnimal talk 22:40, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
- Not even on Translatewiki itself? You probably know, but it's separate from Wikimedia projects, so pings there wouldn't be shown here, but they should show there. Maybe the discussion extension they're using there doesn't work with it for some reason. … aaand when typing that, I realized what is probably the cause – pings trigger when (a) a username is linked and (b) a signature is added. Since no signature is normally added – it's handled by the extension – it probably doesn't trigger a ping either. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:58, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
- Nope, no pings on translatewiki.net itself. You are probably right that it's the Semantic MediaWiki stuff that's incompatible with Echo. Oh well! — MusikAnimal talk 16:35, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Hate to bother you, but
There's something somewhere that keeps giving me error messages. The first bit of my last one is:
mw.loader.implement("ext.gadget.CommentsInLocalTime@0wvqexe",function($,jQuery,require,module){importScript('User:Gary/comments in local time.js');});mw.loader.implement("ext.gadget.DotsSyntaxHighlighter@0v7flyt",function($,jQuery,require,module){mw.loader.load('//www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-DotsSyntaxHighlighter.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');});mw.loader.implement("ext.gadget.ExternalSearch@04xkea8",function($,jQuery,require,module){function SpecialSearchEnhanced(){var createOption=function(site,action,mainQ,addQ,addV){var
Does anything there ring a bell? Doug Weller talk 13:38, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Doug Weller: How dare you bother me! :) When you say you see an error, I assume you mean in the JavaScript console? The above just looks like the code that loads a few gadgets (CommentsInLocalTime, DotsSyntaxHighlighter, and ExternalSearch). To me it doesn't indicate anything is broken. Not sure if did this already, but try following the steps at WP:JSERROR, and specifically look for output that is in red.
I am curious why your View History link is moving around. Another thing you could try is viewing a page in safe mode, by adding the
safemode=1
parameter to the URL. E.g. [47]. This will disable all gadgets (like MoreMenu), but the Vector skin should still operate as it would normally and move your View History link if the viewport is too small. So basically if you see this issue in safe mode, we know the issue isn't with MoreMenu or any of your other gadgets. — MusikAnimal talk 18:55, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. I need to start looking for a pattern in what pages and actions bring up error messages. I'm getting them (they aren't always the same) a lot. It usually, but not always, doesn't repeat if I reload the page. Doug Weller talk 19:12, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
- It's possible there's also a networking issue. How is the bandwidth of your internet connection, and the performance of your computer? It shouldn't matter, but they are really slow I guess those race conditions that I was talking could be the culprit. Some sort of race condition is my best guess, since you say the issue happens intermittently.
- Just to double-check, you are using Vector, right? Because I did notice your User:Doug Weller/monobook.js is loading the "markblocked" script but is not declaring dependencies. I would enable this gadget in your preferences, anyway, rather than sourcing the script. — MusikAnimal talk 19:36, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, Vector. I've blanked monobook.js. I checked my speed and discovered that my Bitdefender VPN was slowing me way down. So I disconnected that and now have 204.7 Mbps but everytime I load this I still get the error I had before. Good to know how much the VPN was slowing me down though! I only use it to get through to some US sites. Doug Weller talk 20:46, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
- When I load that page, I do get an error from Twinkle: "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property '1' of null ... HTMLDocument.Twinkle.load". Is that the error you're talking about? I think that's just because Twinkle doesn't recognize that it's an IP range.
- If you're seeing a different error, let me know what it is and I'll try to debug — MusikAnimal talk 20:57, 11 August 2018 (UTC)

Interface Administrator
I don't want to go volunteering you for extra work in public, so I'll just share this idea with you here.
It seems that Interface Administrator will be (ought to be) handed to Admins after a 24hr pause for objections or second thoughts. I wouldn't anticipate any applicants being denied, after all if they're to be trusted with the regular set of Admin tools, why not the Interface Admin tools? Hubris and a lack of caution are the only risks in use of the right.
If MusikBot were to do an assessment, as it does at the RFP queues, to give the applicants some bald facts for self-assessment & reflection - well, I think that would be more constructive & less confrontational than other editors questioning the applicant's competence. Something along the lines of
- Applicant has made ## edits to ## userspace js pages,
- and ## edits to ## userspace css pages,
- and ## edits to ## sitewide js pages,
- and ## edits to ## sitewide css pages.
Just my 2¢. Cabayi (talk) 14:13, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
- This has been discussed to death at Wikipedia talk:Interface administrators. Interface admin is not about trust but reducing the "attack surface". More at meta:Creation of separate user group for editing sitewide CSS/JS. That being said you're correct that counting edits to sitewide JS/CSS is something we have to do manually now (or run a query), and a clerking bot could help with that — MusikAnimal talk 15:07, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

- Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

- There will be an A/B test on the Wikipedia mobile website. It starts this week. It tests how we show templates that show information about an article. The test will last two weeks. [61][62]
- You can now use different CSS rules for different skins when you edit templates. This is because of TemplateStyles. [63]
wp10
in ORES is now calledarticlequality
. [64]- When you get a new message on your talk page you get a yellow message in the toolbar. The preference to show or not show this has been removed. [65]
Problems
- UploadWizard had problems with campaigns. Users could not upload files. This has now been fixed. [66]
- You can get a notification when a link is made to a page you created. This has not worked since June. It was fixed last week. [67]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 September. It will be on all wikis from 6 September (calendar).

Recent changes
- When you added or edited a template with the visual editor the input boxes were very big. This has been fixed. The input boxes will now be smaller until you click on them. Then they will change size to fit the text. [69]
Problems
- Some diffs showed lines in the wrong order. This was fixed last week. [70]
- Marking a cross-wiki notification as read didn't work every time. The other wiki was not updated. This has now been fixed. [71]
<maplink>
did not work for a few days. This was because of a bug. This has now been fixed. [72]{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}
is used by some templates. For a period edits saved with{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}
would save the previous user's name and not your username. This is now fixed. Edits made before the bug was fixed will still be wrong and need to be corrected. [73]- When you move a page the title still shows the old page name. The developers are working on fixing this. [74]

responseHelper
Hey, I have questions/comments about rH. I didn't have a common.js, so I created one and added rH. It gave me an error, and to save it I had to override the error. Seems to work, though. The error was something like unexpected { at position 1. Also, it works at WP:SPI but it doesn't include that in the list of venues. Thanks!--Bbb23 (talk) 00:39, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Bbb23: The error was because you were substituting a template into a JS page. That template ({{iusc}}) produces JavaScript code, hence why the script still works. The template thing isn't really needed, so I've updated the setup instructions to just put the
importScript
code, so folks won't see that error that you saw. Anyways, yours is setup correctly! - I don't know why you don't see WP:SPI in your sidebar. You definitely should. You sure it's not there? :) As you already know, User:Timotheus Canens/spihelper.js is the thing to use at SPI anyway, not responseHelper. — MusikAnimal talk 01:16, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- You misunderstood what I said about SPI. rH does provide links in the sidebar when you edit a report, but your documentation doesn't mention SPI: "responseHelper is a user script that makes it easier to respond to requests/reports at WP:AIV, WP:ANEW, WP:PERM, WP:RFPP and WP:UAA." I do use Timotheus's spihelper (all the time) at SPI. I mentioned it because I thought you might want to add it to the doc.--Bbb23 (talk) 02:20, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- Got it! Feel free to edit the docs, if you see corrections are needed :) Glad to hear everything is otherwise working properly. — MusikAnimal talk 02:24, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

Are You The One Who Created The Page For Danielle Bregoli AKA The Cash Me Outside Girl?
Dear MusikAnimal.
Have you watched that one episode of Dr. Phil about Bhad Bhabie under her real name of Danielle Bregoli? You know that she became famous at the age of 13 from yelling Cash Me Outside Howbow Dah to the audience after she got fed up.
Fast forward to August 24, 2017 the day when her debut single was released as a 14 year old rapper named Bhad Bhabie titled These Heaux.
In addition to that did you write her article because she has been red-linked ever since the description for that episode was typed in the Memorable Episodes section.
And you forgot to retitle the article to Bhad Bhabie and it should've said "Danielle Marie Peskowitz professionally known as Bhad Bhabie (pronounced bad baby) is an American child rapper and social media personality from Boynton Beach, Florida. As Danielle Bregoli, she became famous for the Cash Me Outside Howbow Dah meme after she appeared on an episode of Dr. Phil in September 2016."
Remember she is still 15. I wouldn't consider using teen because she will become the big 1-8 on March 26, 2021.
Sincerely,

NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018
Hello MusikAnimal, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!
The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.
- Project news
- The New Page Feed now has a new "Articles for Creation" option which will show drafts instead of articles in the feed, this shouldn't impact NPP activities and is part of the WMF's AfC Improvement Project.
- As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
- There are a number of coordination tasks for New Page Patrol that could use some help from experienced reviewers. See Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Coordination#Coordinator tasks for more info to see if you can help out.
- Other
- A new summary page of reliable sources has been created; Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources/Perennial sources, which summarizes existing RfCs or RSN discussions about regularly used sources.
- Moving to Draft and Page Mover
- Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
- If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
- Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
- The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
- The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.

A message from P.FerreiraPinto
P.FerreiraPinto (talk) 14:04, 21 September 2018 (UTC) Hi MusikAnimal
According to the statistics, the page "União das Freguesias de Sameice e Santa Eulália" was brought by MusikAnimal, Kaldari, and Marcel Ruiz Forns.
Links:
Page https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uni%C3%A3o_das_Freguesias_de_Sameice_e_Santa_Eul%C3%A1lia

Marcel Ruiz Forns https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Mforns_(WMF)
Source Code: MusikAnimal/pageviews https://github.com/MusikAnimal/pageviews
My question is, can we edit this page? Once the source code will always automatically revert it to german, how can we create a PT page with the same 'name'? We simply can't have a dutch page describing a Portuguese Municipal Public Service on wikipedia...
Why my PT page and several editions are been constantly deleted (on this and other pages related)?
I am currently working to the União das Freguesias de Sameice e Santa Eulália and we are trying to solve the situation for about 2 to 3 weeks, yet 'nobody', including 'permissions-Wikipedia' is solving the issue.
Can you please fix it?
Thank you.

- @P.FerreiraPinto: I believe you might be mistaken. The "brought to you by..." message is referring to the Pageviews tool itself, not the articles that may appear on it. A message from Abequinn14
Bot removed a protection tag from a page even though it was protected. Abequinn14 (talk) 23:24, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
- I think that's because it was using {{pp}} and not {{pp-pc1}}. For {{pp}} you need the
action=autoreview
parameter set, apparently — MusikAnimal talk 00:10, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
Your bot removed the original Sanskrit Text of The Shiva Tandava Stotrum from said entry~ this is not at all exceptable as your edit results in SIGNIFICANT OBFUSCATION of Religious and Historical Facts. It will be re-added daily. This is a Historical Text which IS The Entry, without Ranvans Text any address of The Holy Stotrum is Utterly irrelevant nonsense/speculation. (YSR, 2075) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:284:C100:1515:7102:D1E0:99FA:B853 (talk) 18:23, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
- It did not. It removed the protection template. This is routine maintenance and has nothing to do with the content of the page. You can request protection again at WP:RFPP. Concerns about the content of the article should be made on the talk page at Talk:Shiva Tandava Stotra. Hope this helps — MusikAnimal talk 18:41, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

A few minor questions on AdminStats tool
I bugged you back in March about the AdminStats tool, this is sort of a follow-up to that. I've got a few questions/clarifications, whenever you find a moment.
- For the given date range, am I correct that these lines in the code mean the tool shows actions between 00:00 UTC on the first day and 23:59 UTC on the last day? I am not a php person, but that seems fairly straightforward!
- The tool lists anybody who took any of those actions in the given time frame, right, without any filtering? Don't see any in the code.
- Is there a way to indicate a date range in the API, i.e. to pull up a month from a few months or years ago?
I've been working on something using data from the tool, I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right! ~ Amory (u • t • c) 18:05, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Amorymeltzer: You are correct about #1 and 2. The query itself is here. We don't allow arbitrary date ranges through the API, mainly because large date ranges are really slow and this isn't suited for automation. I suppose we could allow any start date, with a maximum of one month duration. I have created phab:T205652 — MusikAnimal talk 18:25, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
- Brilliant, thank you! I figured that was the reason, just wanted to check in case I missed it. As long as I'm here, would you mind terribly if I submitted a PR to change the current max in AdminStatsController.php to 31 from 30? ~ Amory (u • t • c) 18:49, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Amorymeltzer: That seems reasonable, as obviously some months are 31 days. And please, don't ever hesitate to make PRs! :) — MusikAnimal talk 19:32, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Ordinary pages can no longer be loaded as javascript. You could do this using
?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript
in the URL. Only fully protected pages in the MediaWiki: namespace or user javascript subpages can be loaded as javascript now. This is for better security. [80][81]
Problems
- New and updated translations from translatewiki.net will not reach the wikis for a while. You can still translate messages on translatewiki.net. The Wikimedia wikis will be updated with the new translations later. This is because of work on the translation system. [82][83]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 October. It will be on all wikis from 4 October (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 3 October at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the meeting with the Wikimedia Foundation Search Platform team. The meeting will be on 3 October at 15:00 UTC. See how to join if you want to know how the search function works or have questions.
Future changes
- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour. You can read more about this.

- Following a request for comment, the process for appointing interface administrators has been established. Currently only existing admins can request these rights, while a new RfC has begun on whether it should be available to non-admins.
- There is an open request for comment on Meta regarding the creation a new user group for global edit filter management.
- Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
- The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
- Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.
- The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
- The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
- Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
- Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

- @Eli355: I understand that, you already said that before. However, contribution to the project namespaces is also rather important, as it helps determine what content is in the mainspace, how it is presented, etc. With this particular RfA candidate, working as an SPI clerk is important since it helps stop disruption to the project. Hello MusikAnimal, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!
- Backlog
As of 21 October 2018[update], there are 3650 unreviewed articles and the backlog now stretches back 51 days.
- Community Wishlist Proposal
- There is currently an ongoing discussion regarding the drafting of a Community Wishlist Proposal for the purpose of requesting bug fixes and missing/useful features to be added to the New Page Feed and Curation Toolbar.
- Please join the conversation as we only have until 29 October to draft this proposal!
- Project updates
- ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
- There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.
- New scripts
- User:Enterprisey/cv-revdel.js(info) — A new script created for quickly placing {{copyvio-revdel}} on a page.

A message from User:Dafrontani
Hi MusikAnimal,
I hope my message finds you well!
Four years ago, you deleted my draft entitled "John DiLeva Halpern". I am now reinstating my efforts to create a page for this artist, and I am writing to you to see if you are able to release the page to me or otherwise make it possible for me to create a new page.
Or in another form:
Far off, a toad leaps No sound, like the empty page Halpern has no site
I would be very grateful if you could help me as I try to get going again! I look forward to beginning the creation process and I greatly appreciate your attention and concern.
All best,
Dafrontani
Dafrontani (talk) 17:55, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Dafrontani: The draft was deleted as a copyright violation of wakingbuddha.com/director/. The content was nearly identical. You are welcomed to create another draft, but obviously it should be written in your own words. I recommend using the article wizard to recreate it so that you can submit your draft for review. Hope this helps — MusikAnimal talk 04:41, 24 October 2018 (UTC)

Edit Filter #249
I see you're the most recent editor to Special:AbuseFilter/249. Would it make sense to change the filter to block such actions, rather than merely logging them? It seems it would prevent vandalism like this editor and be unlikely to bother anyone making good edits. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:53, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Pi.1415926535: Personally I don't think it's a bad idea. I see this came up at WP:EF/R (permalink) about a year ago. I think we need more discussion and evaluation of the log to see what good edits we'd be blocking. I don't have the time to look into it right now, but feel free to do a little analysis yourself and post your findings. — MusikAnimal talk 17:47, 24 October 2018 (UTC)

FYI
Hello MA. I hope you are well. I wanted to let you know that, for the last couple of days, whenever I check the Category:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates it has a dozen or so entries in it. That hasn't happened for a long time. As you may remember I am happy to check and remove the PP templates in my capacity as a wikignome but I did want to make you aware of the situation in case there is a problem with MusikBot. It also gave me a chance to stop by and say hello which is a good thing :-) Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 08:44, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

- Good deal MA. Here is something that has only just come to mind. There have been a couple times where an alteration of "Pending Changes Configuration" have caused an article to appear in the category. One was Friendship (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) (which I note your bot has added a different template to) and another is Zombie Land Saga (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs). I've left the second one as is so you can see if you can figure out what is going on. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 19:08, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

Interface Edit Requests - Bot Table
Hello MusikAnimal, as an interface administrator I wanted to let you know that there are two pages you should consider watch-listing: Wikipedia:Interface administrators' noticeboard and User:AnomieBOT/IPERTable. The later is a bot-generated table of all outstanding interface edit requests that you may be able to handle. Thank you for your continuing support of Wikipedia! — xaosflux Talk 14:40, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Did you know?
Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has wrapped up most of their work on the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual diff tool. The team has begun investigating the needs of editors who use mobile devices. Their work board is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are fixing bugs and improving mobile editing.
Recent changes
- The Editing team has published an initial report about mobile editing.
- The Editing team has begun a design study of visual editing on the mobile website. New editors have trouble doing basic tasks on a smartphone, such as adding links to Wikipedia articles. You can read the report.
- The Reading team is working on a separate mobile-based contributions project.
- The 2006 wikitext editor is no longer supported. If you used that toolbar, then you will no longer see any toolbar. You may choose another editing tool in your editing preferences, local gadgets, or beta features.
- The Editing team described the history and status of VisualEditor in this recorded public presentation (starting at 29 minutes, 30 seconds).
- The Language team released a new version of Content Translation (CX2) last month, on International Translation Day. It integrates the visual editor to support templates, tables, and images. It also produces better wikitext when the translated article is published. [94]
Let's work together
- The Editing team wants to improve visual editing on the mobile website. Please read their ideas and tell the team what you think would help editors who use the mobile site.
- The Community Wishlist Survey begins next week.
- If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly. We will notify you when the next issue is ready for translation. Thank you!

MediaWiki:Gadget-geonotice-list.js
Hi, re this edit: the edit summary has a (piped) link to Special:Diff/364384/868047883 which has an extra revision number, making it really strange to follow. I think that it should be to Special:Diff/868047883. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:01, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Redrose64: The problem is what to do if there are multiple edits since the last sync. Should I list out each diff individually? Edit summaries can be pretty long now, so I guess this isn't a problem. It will take me a bit to implement it, though. — MusikAnimal talk 18:05, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- Oh wait sorry, that diff link was from before the bot's cache was updated with the current. The first rev ID was a dummy one, hence why you see something from a different page entirely. Special:Diff/868053189 is an actual example of how it generates links. — MusikAnimal talk 18:07, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- You can give diffs for multiple edits, the first number is the oldest revision and the second number is the newest: Special:Diff/867907996/868049461. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:03, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- Yup, that's what we're doing. The first diff link in the first edit was broken due to human error. I should have put in the actual revid of what would have been the previous sync, instead of the dummy 364384. — MusikAnimal talk 19:12, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Protection against vandalism
Hi, I was just trying to get confidence on how to protect a page (Milan Malpensa Airport) against vandalism (I fear I add a by mistake, sorry, my bad!). Anyway, due to recurrent vandalisms to such page (mainly from un-registered users), would it be worthy, advisable and possible to add such a protection? Could you in that case (I'm not an admin) ty for your comprehension User:Riktetta (talk) 21:50, 10 November 2018 (CET)
- @Riktetta: Hey! Indeed, you cannot protect a page by adding the protection template. An admin must help you. I don't have time to look into it right now, but you can make a request for page protection at WP:RFPP.
Unrelated issue, your signature indicates it's in CET and not UTC. Are you by chance manually adding your signature? You should use the syntax
~~~~
to sign your comments. It will automatically generate your username/talk links and a UTC timestamp. If you somehow configured your signature to be in CET, then please change that and ensure it's UTC. Bots, scripts, and even humans go by UTC, and will not be able to recognize any other timezone. Hope this helps — MusikAnimal talk 23:29, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. |
Hello MusikAnimal,
- Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
- Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
- If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
- We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
- With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.
ArbCom 2018 election voter message
Hello, MusikAnimal. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
Maya Berović‘s Wikipedia protection
Hey there, as you might have noticed I have tried to protect Maya‘s Wikipedia page, because someone is vandalizing the page: •He always deletes, that she lives in Belgrade, even if she stated that on her Facebook-page. •He also always deletes that she is Bosnian-Serbian, when her parents are Bosnian Serbs and she has the Serbian citizenship.
Could you try to protect the page and also maybe to ban that vandalizer? I would be so thankful!
Greetings, Србија24 Србија24 (talk) 19:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Србија24: You can't protect pages that way. You need an admin. The normal process is to make a request at WP:RFPP. I've gone ahead and semi-protected the page, but this means you can't edit it either right now (until you've made 2 more edits and waited 3 more days, at which point you'll become autoconfirmed). From the looks of it, you were one of those IPs that was engaging in an edit war. The way to resolve this is to start a discussion on the talk page and try to reach a consensus. If they continue to revert you, don't continue to revert them, instead report the issue at WP:ANEW. That said, these internal noticeboards (RFPP, ANEW) are probably confusing to you right now... Hopefully I can help you resolve this particular issue without you needing to do anything.
- So, let's leave the protection in place, and see the other user decides to discuss on the talk page. For the record, we generally don't accept Facebook as a reliable source, but it seems that should be enough to prove your claim of living in Belgrade has some merit. I'm going to side with you here, but ideally we could find a better source than Facebook.
- I've also left links to some helpful guides on your talk page. This might help you get a hang of how things work around here. I know it's complicated! Take your time, and if you need more help don't hesitate to contact me. Best — MusikAnimal talk 20:04, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- The advanced search interface will be available by default on all Wikimedia wikis. It makes it easier to use some of the special search functions that most editors don't know exist. It's already active on German, Farsi, Arabic and Hungarian Wikipedia. [107]
- Special:UnusedCategories show empty categories with no files or other categories. You can soon choose to not show soft redirect categories or some maintenance categories there. You can do this with the magic word
__EXPECTUNUSEDCATEGORY__
. [108] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 November. It will be on all wikis from 29 November (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 28 November at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The
mw.util.jsMessage()
function was deprecated in 2012. It will be removed next week. Look for the warningUse of "mw.util.jsMessage" is deprecated
in the JavaScript console to know if you use an affected script or gadget. If you are a gadget maintainer you should check if your JavaScript code containsmw.util.jsMessage
What would it take to add a logged-in/logged-out option for https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews ? I've got a particular question in mind (Do non-editing readers use the content category pages as much as the rest of us?), but I think it would be useful in general. Is this possible, or would it require major changes somewhere?
- @Whatamidoing (WMF): This data is not available in the public APIs, which is what the tool goes off of. It might be accessible somewhere in the analytics cluster, I'm not sure. MusikBot removing pp-pc1 incorrectly?
Hello,
When reviewing pending changes I stumbled across this edit, in which MusikBot removed a {{pp-pc1}} template on a pending-changes-protected page. Is this intended behaviour? Thanks. ProgrammingGeek talktome 21:58, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
- Never mind, an IP editor changed the template and MusikBot removed the (now incorrect) one. The pending changes view hid the intermediate edit. It's now resolved and apologies for the unneeded ping. ProgrammingGeek talktome 22:03, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – December 2018
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2018).
- Al Ameer son • Randykitty • Spartaz
- Boson • Daniel J. Leivick • Efe • Esanchez7587 • Fred Bauder • Garzo • Martijn Hoekstra • Orangemike
Interface administrator changes
- Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
- A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
- A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
- A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.
- Administrators and bureaucrats can no longer unblock themselves unless they placed the block initially. This change has been implemented globally. See also this ongoing village pump discussion (permalink).
- To complement the aforementioned change, blocked administrators will soon have the ability to block the administrator that placed their block to mitigate the possibility of a compromised administrator account blocking all other active administrators.
- Since deployment of Partial blocks on Test Wikipedia, several bugs were identified. Most of them are now fixed. Administrators are encouraged to test the new deployment and report new bugs on Phabricator or leave feedback on the Project's talk page. You can request administrator access on the Test Wiki here.
- Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections is open to eligible editors until Monday 23:59, 3 December 2018. Please review the candidates and, if you wish to do so, submit your choices on the voting page.
- In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
- Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.
- Shock Brigade Harvester Boris (Raymond Arritt) passed away on 14 November 2018. Boris joined Wikipedia as Raymond arritt on 8 May 2006 and was an administrator from 30 July 2007 to 2 June 2008.
Recent changes
- Admins will not be able to unblock themselves if they are blocked by someone other than themselves. This is because it can cause damage if someone else takes over an admin account and other admins can't block them. If this is a problem for your community you can report it on Phabricator. You can also ask questions on Meta. There is a discussion on Phabricator about how to solve this if two admins fight with each other on a small wiki. [111]
- Small SVG images are now bigger when you see them in MediaViewer. [112]
- You can go to a section from the edit summary by clicking on the section name. Before this you had to click on the arrow. [113]
- When you jumped to a footnote that was referenced several times in an article it could be difficult to see where you were in the text. Now there are jump marks and highlights to help you find your way back. [114][115]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 5 December at 16:00 (UTC) and at 23:00 (UTC). See how to join.
MusikBot removing template too early?
Please see this diff (Special:Diff/871813616), showing MusikBot removing a PP template today -- that page is supposed to be protected until Dec 16 (page log). Cheers! - tucoxn\talk 16:42, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
Template Barelvi
this template needs to be secured due to frequent editing by different editors endorsing their POV and promoting and advertisement. For this reason the temple has been secuiin other languages but not English. Please secure the page with editing rights to me .Saudmujadidi (talk) 06:29, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Saudmujadidi: Hi, you can request page protection at WP:RFPP. At cursory glance, it would seem this template has not received much disruption, though. Regardless, we do not secure pages so that only one person can edit them. See Wikipedia:Ownership of content for more information. Hope this helps — MusikAnimal talk 23:12, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
Finding out all main authorships of an author
Hi MusikAnimal, sorry for reposting this, but it was archived without an answer: you were recommended to me here as the expert who might be able to help me. How do i find out all articles in which a certain user is the main contributor? All the best, --Ghilt (talk) 11:12, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Ghilt: Hey there, sorry for the late reply! This sounds like Top Edits. For example, see the results for Jimbo Wales on English Wikipedia. This shows the top pages they edited, going by edit count. This however is not the same thing as being the "main contributor". You could for instance make 50 small edits to an article, as opposed to one large edit. We have a task (phab:T172006) open to add a "Top Added Text" feature, which I think is probably what you want. I will try to look into it soon. Regards — MusikAnimal talk 23:31, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
Protected templates
You've protected Template:Jalandhar district and Template:Languages of Indonesia. But these templates had already been protected ones (as part of a mass drive to protecte templates with a certain number of transclusions) and then individually unprotected per requests (because of a history of constructive anonymous edits and no history of vandalism). – Uanfala (talk) 12:33, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
Just adding that I only know of these templates because I've been ivolved with them. As far as I remember, there were other templates that were similarly unprotected. Pinging Primefac who applied the previous round of mass protections and who has been dealing with the requests for unprotection. Shouldn't there be some way of not mass protecting templates that have individually been uprotected in the past? – Uanfala (talk) 12:39, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Uanfala: Sorry! Indeed, this was another round of taking the same precautions. I did not know that these pages were previously unprotected. To be honest I'm a bit torn. I'd argue the risk (while not super high) of these template has merit. They are at the lowest form of protection, which at least for Template:Jalandhar district wouldn't seem to shut out many editors. I think in this case it is solely about the number of transclusions that inevitably makes it a target. It feels super un-wiki to preemptively protect like this, but you should know incidents have happened. I have gone ahead and unprotected Template:Languages of Indonesia because of its history and that it has a few more eyes on it. What would be really neat is to be able to add something like pending-changes protection to pages in the template namespace. For now I suppose I was erring on the side of caution. That said, what are your thoughts? — MusikAnimal talk 09:56, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
- When you hover over a footnote it will show you the reference as a pop-up. This is so you don't have to jump down to the bottom of the page to see a reference. This will happen in 2019. Some wikis already have gadgets that do this. You will be able to turn it off. [118]
Hey! A little over a week ago, I suggested that instead of its current 7-day rolling archive, WP:RFPP start compiling a complete archive organized by request result and date, giving the WP:PERM archive as a model. Discussion started at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Complete auto-archiving of RFPP and moved to Wikipedia talk:Requests for page protection#Archiving RfPP requests. There looks to be clear consensus in favor of starting such an archive. Since it's MusikBot that runs the PERM archive, I figured I'd contact you about implementing this for RFPP. Would it be possible? Is there anything else you need to make it happen? Thanks so much for all your work making this place tick! A2soup (talk) 16:29, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018
Hello MusikAnimal,
- Reviewer of the Year
This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.
- Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.
See also the list of top 100 reviewers.
- Less good news, and an appeal for some help
The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.
- Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019
At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.
- Training video
Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.
TAFI
Hello MusikAnimal: Well, it appears that the MusikBot functions may need some tweaking in relation to WP:TAFI. It isn't randomly selecting any entries for the TAFI Schedule for 2019 so far. So, posting here for your perusal. I tweaked a bit with Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement/2019/1, and then undid my edit, but before this, the bot did not create anything or pick anything from the Wikipedia:Articles for improvement page. Going to need your assistance with this matter! North America1000 08:30, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
- Seems there is a bug in bot code. Bot think the schedule week is 2018-01. But I have fixed in WT:TAFI Hhkohh (talk) 03:03, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Northamerica1000: It appears the bot was still referencing 2018 and not 2019, which started with Special:Diff/872906478. I am not sure why... reviewing the code everything looks correct. I also did a dry run (no editing) and it picked the right date. So, my best guess is the bot is somehow running in a different timezone than UTC. I will look into this further but I'm fairly confident this issue won't happen again next week, since the target date will be a week into 2019. Unfortunately I won't be around to monitor, though :( If you could, please keep an eye on it. I will check back first thing Monday (my time). Regards — MusikAnimal talk 03:09, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for the quick reply. I'll keep an eye on matters. A concern is that the TAFI Schedule will no longer automatically be populated, and doing it manually is tricky because then one has do go through a bunch of transclusions and manually change things, which would then further disable the bots functioning (e.g. manually adding the weekly selection's article name every week, rather than using the present automation). North America1000 15:30, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
- Seems like it may be working now. I'll try to check in there every now and then. North America1000 10:45, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
Bot
Would that stupid bot of yours stop reverting pp-semi by me and ymblanter we know why it is there and it goes and messed it up. Breakroute (talk) 09:00, 16 December 2018 (UTC) {{whale}}
- @Breakroute: It looks like Ymblanter accidentally added the template without protecting the page (La Aurora International Airport). You and MusikBot went wayyy past 3RR in that edit war, which is frankly a candidate for WP:LAME. MusikAnimal, the bot shouldn't really revert if it's reverted, because it is not technically 3RR exempt. I do appreciate that functionality like that could be tricky to code though! ∰Bellezzasolo✡ Discuss 21:53, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Bellezzasolo: It doesn't really revert, rather it goes off of Category:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates. I could make it check the revision history, and have it skip that page if it's within say, an hour since the last MusikBot edit. I will look into this when I have time. An easier thing I can do is link to an FAQ page in the edit summary. The core issue here, after all, is not edit warring but the misconception that the bot actually controls page protection. — MusikAnimal talk 18:16, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
Minor addition to User:MusikAnimal/responseHelper.js
back in July I added a ndng
option for "no response given" to Template:RFPC as it's a pretty common response at WP:PERM/C. It's gotten some use by others, so perhaps it might be useful to add. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 11:31, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
Recent protection spree
Not complaining or anything, just curious what prompted several hundred semi-protect actions. Just proactive vandal-proofing? — AfroThundr (u · t · c) 01:42, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- There was an incident, but for the most part yes it was another round of preemptive protections to visible templates which is performed every so often. More info above at Special:Permalink/873618957#Protected templates. Best — MusikAnimal talk 01:47, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- The previous thread got archived before I was able to find the time to respond. So yeah, if pending changes protection could be made to work with templates, that would be awesome! But until then, if any sort of protection is applied, I don't personally think it's best to base it entirely on transclusion counts: the harm caused by a vandalised template depends a lot on the kinds of pages it's transcluded on ({{Jalandhar district}} for example might have a high transclusion count but almost all uses are on obscure village articles that almost nobody reads; some templates, like talk page banners, don't affect readers at all), and how prominent it's positioned on the page (infoboxes have a higher risk than navboxes). As for navboxes, at least from what I see in the areas I edit, protecting them is usually counterproductive: they often require a lot of work to keep pace with the creation and renaming of articles, most regulars haven't kept up with this and so the navboxes are often out of date, IPs have sometimes stept in to help and I don't recall ever seeing the templates vandalised (and if they do get vandalised at some point, the impact is going to be small: they appear at the bottom of the pages, they don't enclose any content, and they aren't displayed on mobile view).
Anyway, if batch protections are going to be applied, wouldn't it be a good idea to get some sort of bot approval first? Not out of procedural punctiliousness, but because RFBB is a good place to receive feedback on the specificis of the process that otherwise might not be obvious at first. For example, I see two practical issues:- As discussed in the previous thread, some of the templates protected in the previous batch have individually been unprotected and now they've been batch protected again. Now, if an editor has reviewed a specific template on its individual merits and has decided that protection is not appropriate, then having an automated process override this individual decision is a straightforward no-no. Isn't there a way for the process to check the protection log first?
- If there's a process to apply protection to templates above a certain threshold of transclusions, then there ought to be a process for removing the protection of that subset of those templates whose transclusion count falls below the threshold. That might not be a very frequent occurrence but it does happen sometimes: templates might fall out of use, big navboxes might get split, etc. – Uanfala (talk) 15:04, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Uanfala: So I have my own script that I use (not sure what the other admins were using). You present some great ideas for improvements. I will have it check if the template was unprotected in the past, say, 6 months. Secondly, I can have it check the combined pageviews of the transcluded pages. If it's under say, 1000 pageviews in the past month, it will skip it. How does that sound?
- You're right that bot approval would probably have been the correct way to go. To be fair, I was making sort of an WP:IAR move in response to an actual vandalism attack. The last time I did this, I announced it at WP:AN to much praise. So, I didn't think twice about doing it again, once I saw the vandalism had returned (because more risky, unprotected templates had become available). I would love to fully automate this, adding in the checks you suggested. I'll try to start a proposal for this soon.
- Kind regards — MusikAnimal talk 19:02, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 7 January 2019.
Recent changes
- Some templates that show notices about the content of the page will now be shown on the mobile website. In many cases they were hidden before. [120][121]
- Admins can no longer unblock themselves, except for self-blocks. A blocked admin can block the user who blocked them but no one else. This is so no one can block all admins on a wiki without being stopped. [122]
- The ParserMigration extension has been removed. It compared the result of two versions of the MediaWiki wikitext parsing pipeline. It was used when we moved to the Remex parsing library instead of Tidy.
Problems
<ref>
tags can use parameters such as "name" or "group". For example<ref name="adams" group="books">
. If a<ref>
tag has more than two parameters all parameters are ignored. You don't get a warning that they don't work. This will soon be fixed. [123]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 December. It will be on all wikis from 20 December (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 19 December at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Wikimedia Foundation Android app team are working on making it easier to edit on mobile phones. You can read more about these plans. If you have an Android phone and speak at least two languages you can help testing in English. Tell Dchen (WMF) you want to be part of the testing by writing on her talk page or email her.
-
tiles.wmflabs.org
andwma.wmflabs.org
will stop working. They have no maintainers and run an old operating system. Tools which use it could stop working. This includes the mapnik gadget, hill shading, and hike and bike layers. New maintainers could help out and keep it going. [124]
Is vengeance to vandals OK?
Hello there. I was trying to deal with a recent vandal (User:94.234.39.225) and my first reaction after reverting his first offence was to visit this page to request immediate blocking. The automated system of the page rejected my edit because the user had not engaged in vandalism after being warned. While checking for the appropriate warning templates the user engaged in vandalism another two times. After promptly reverting the edits I posted a level 3 warning on the user's talk page. Anticipating another act of vandalism I was checking the user's contributions page, ready to report the user for immediate blocking in the appropriate Administrator's noticeboard. To my satisfaction, the user looked like refraining from his disruptive behaviour after receiving the warning and seeing his disruptive edits swiftly reverted. Then comes your block. Was it warranted? The thing is I'm getting mixed messages here. Should we be cool-blooded and civil with vandals or not. In this case, being civil and cool-blooded (albeit forcefully due to the automated system of vandal reporting) seems to have worked. Your actions left me confused. Nxavar (talk) 18:01, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Nxavar: I'm not sure what automated system you're talking about at WP:AIV. Anyway, this is a case of long-term abuse (LTA) so the need for prior warnings doesn't apply. You of course didn't know this was an LTA, so following WP:WARNVAND was the right thing to do. Apologies for the confusion — MusikAnimal talk 19:17, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the hint to the WP:LTA policy! On a second note, is it possible to have a page were all edits to the articles featured in any of the sections of the Main Page are aggregated? Does a relevant page already exist? Thanks in advance. Nxavar (talk) 20:57, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
Request for Revision Deletion
Hello MusikAnimal, I have a request about a revision deletion that I would like done. The page and information in question contains sensitive information, that I cannot make public here for privacy concerns. Perhaps I could email you, or contact you through some other private venue? Let me know and I'll check back on here. Thanks Temeku (talk) 04:39, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Temeku: Hey! Sorry for the late reply. You email me if you'd like, but in general I recommend making requests on IRC. You'll get more eyes/opinions on it, and a much quicker response. The channel is #wikipedia-en-revdel connect (use "connect" if you don't have an IRC client). No one can see what you say in that channel except admins. More at WP:REVDELREQUEST. - @DannyS712: I took a quick looksee, I like it! There are some formatting improvements that could be made, e.g. the "Scripts" list is a little hard to read, I think. I'm not sure what a better format would be. Another minor thing -- under Miscellaneous, the "Thoughts?" text should probably link to a talk page. Also, I think "Contact the author" is a little OWN-y, better we use a talk page for the newsletter itself and just a "Discuss this newsletter" link. But, it's obviously up to you on how you want to present the newsletter as it's in your userspace. That's all for now. Regards, — MusikAnimal talk 19:17, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – January 2019
News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).
- There are a number of new or changed speedy deletion criteria, each previously part of WP:CSD#G6:
- G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
- R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
- G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.
- The Wikimedia Foundation now requires all interface administrators to enable two-factor authentication.
- Members of the Bot Approvals Group (BAG) are now subject to an activity requirement. After two years without any bot-related activity (e.g. operating a bot, posting on a bot-related talk page), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice.
- Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
- At least 8 characters in length
- Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
- Different from their username
- User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
- Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
- {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.
- Following the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: AGK, Courcelles, GorillaWarfare, Joe Roe, Mkdw, SilkTork.
- Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
- Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.
Tech News writers, editors and translators wish you a pleasant 2019 year.
Recent changes
- RelatedSites extension has been undeployed. It was used to create interwiki links on Wikivoyage, now handled by Wikidata. [125]
- MediaWiki logstash logging is moving to a new infrastructure. This is an ongoing deployment. [126]
- codesearch.wmflabs.org has been updated, with new and updated repositories and a new search options for code. [127]
- On several wikis, an account named "Edit filter" has been created on December 17 to perform some technical maintenance on AbuseFilter. This account has sysop rights but it's a system user and no human can use it. The account already existed on wikis where AbuseFilter can perform blocks, which are issued using this account. See T212268 for more information and future plans.
Problems
- In AbuseFilter, the "Throttle" action takes three parameters: count, period and groups. They must now strictly respect the requirements listed on mediawiki.org. A list of broken filters is on Phabricator. If you're familiar with AbuseFilter, please take a look and fix them. [128]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from January 8. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from January 9. It will be on all wikis from January 10 (calendar).
Meetings
- Search Platform Office Hours is rescheduled to January 9. Check the details for time and date.
- @Ballstothewallcabral: Hello! Were you trying to edit while logged out? It's possible I blocked the IP, but it probably wasn't because of your actions but other abuse in your IP range. Your account is not blocked, however, so you should be able to use it to edit. — MusikAnimal talk 03:49, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
Rudeness
You have edited my user page without writing to me about it first on my talk page. That's rather rude. Also a waste of time (your time and my time) because anyone who wanted the information about an old MySpace page abandoned years and years ago can still find it in the edit history of the page. Please be more polite in future. wayland (talk) 09:28, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Wayland: Hey, sorry about that. Did you see my edit summary (where I pinged you)? I can email you with more information, if you'd like. In short, there was an urgent reason to remove that link. The fact that it remains in the revision history is irrelevant in this case. Apologies for the confusion. — MusikAnimal talk 15:49, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
Either way, I apologize again for the confusion. Let me know if you need more info. — MusikAnimal talk 19:11, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- You can now use Google Translate in the content translation tool. [129][130]
- You can now add captions to files on Commons. Captions are short descriptions of the file. They can be translated to all languages we use. They can't use wikitext markup.
- Earlier a quoted HTML attribute had to be followed by a space. Now it doesn't. This means that some pages could look different when you save them even if you didn't edit that part of the text. [131][132]
- Templates with <templatestyles> could not show the difference between the live template and the sandbox version when they were tested. This has now been fixed. <templatestyles> has a new
wrapper
parameter now. You can use it for selectors like.mw-parser-output <wrapper parameter value> <selector from CSS page>
. [133]
Problems
- When you see an edit in the recent changes feed or in the history of a page some of them have tags. Some tags are added automatically. You can also add tags manually. Tags for edits that have been added manually can be edited. This didn't work for a little while. This has now been fixed. [134]
Changes later this week
- You can move files from your wiki to Wikimedia Commons and keep the file history with the new FileExporter. It will be a beta feature on all wikis from 16 January. If you want to test it you activate it and check your wiki's configuration file.
- Users who could cause more damage to the wikis if someone took over their account have to have more secure passwords. This includes administrators and other user groups. They can't use passwords that are in a list of common passwords. Accounts with common passwords are easy to take over. The list of common passwords was made longer a few weeks ago and has a different error message. Some user groups have been added to those who can't use common passwords. This is to protect all accounts with user rights that could cause damage. [135]
- The AbuseFilter variable
minor_edit
has been removed. It was deprecated in 2016. Now you can't use it. You can fix the filters using it. You can find them if you use the search bar on Special:AbuseFilter. - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from January 15
- Going to need more context. I see hentai is a potentially offensive subject but I don't know how often this abuse happens and if it's worth treating as a common vandal phrase. Could you elaborate, and give some examples? — MusikAnimal talk 18:23, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Tech News
- Some people did not get last week's issue of Tech News. This was because of a problem with MassMessage. If you did not get last week's issue, you can read it on Meta. [136]
Recent changes
- The content translation tool can now use version 2 as the default version for users who turned on the beta feature. For example it adds the tracking category
Pages with unreviewed translations
to translations that might have used machine translations without fixing the problems. This is so others can find them. You can find this category inSpecial:TrackingCategories
on Wikipedias. - https://mediawiki2latex-large.wmflabs.org can now convert collects of up to 800 pages to PDF, EPUB or ODT. Previously this was 200 pages.
Problems
- When a template was edited with the visual editor, it would sometimes put all information on one line. This makes it difficult to read for editors who use the wikitext editor. It also makes it more difficult to see what happened in a diff. This problem affected edits made between 8 and 17 January and is now fixed. [137]
- MassMessage is used to post a message to many pages. It has not been working reliably. Some messages have not been posted to everyone. [138][139]
- Because of a database problem that had to be fixed immediately you could not edit most wikis for a couple of minutes on 17 January (UTC). This has now been fixed. [140]
Changes later this week
- You will be able to use template styles in the
Module
namespace. [141] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 January. It will be on all wikis from 24 January (calendar).
Hi there. A while back you helped me with some SQL queries and I hope you can do so again. I tried to create a query that attempts to find deletions of a certain type and outputs both the time the page was deleted and the time it was created. Since the only way I know how to find the creation time is to look for the earliest revision in the revision (or archive) table, I tried to query that one that the same time for the earliest revision where the page id was involved. Unfortunately, the query times out and is killed but I have no clue why. Could you take a look and help? Regards SoWhy 08:10, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
