Hi Mean! Why did you delete the truth?

User page Almage

Hi Mean! I'm not sure I'm doing this appropriately or correctly, however I'll take a stab at it. I'm writing in regard to a User page I began last night, which represents my first ever contribution to Wikipedia. I created an account last evening, and read some, but not all, of the multitude of documentation on what is expected and required from, and proper etiquette for, contributors. I'm sure I've made some mistakes....

My intent is not commercial, self-promoting, or dissemination of opinion. There has been some upheaval in the Apple computer user community, revolving around the recent release of the new OS, Mac OS X 10.7, known as Lion. We've been discussing solutions, and my thought was that the procedure I posted on this Wikipedia User page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Almage) would a) be beneficial to the Apple user community and b) allow folks who have been working on figuring out ways to solve problems related to this new OS release to contribute to the procedure for which this page was created.

It now appears that I've triggered some issue with someone (yourself) charged with overseeing the "quality" of the Wikipedia. I just discovered this 'talk' page and interface, after I clicked on the "undo" link for the modification you made to my User page. I performed this 'undo', as I did not realize that blanking the page was not a result of random contributor who for whatever reason felt that blanking the page was the thing to do.

I would very much like to exchange information about the appropriateness or inappropriateness of the procedure information being posted on Wikipedia - hopefully this talk entry is the proper method to begin such.

Almage (talk) 19:38, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

The only problem was that the content had no relevance at all to Wikipedia. It may be of benefit to the Apple user community, but not to the Wikipedia user community. Although I am concerned with the quality of Wikipedia (and that includes user pages), I hold no official position. If you read Wikipedia:User pages, then you should get a good idea of what these pages can be used for. Good Luck! . . Mean as custard (talk) 07:48, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

CSD tagging

Hi. When CSD tagging, please remember to notify the user, using the particular template listed here. -Porch corpter (talk/contribs) 08:06, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed content from User:Monybanks123. When removing content, please specify a reason in the edit summary and discuss edits that are likely to be controversial on the article's talk page. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the content has been restored, as you can see from the page history. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 15:11, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

It was quite intentional if you had bothered to read my edit summary and the content you have restored. . . Mean as custard (talk) 15:51, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Yes, but I didn't see any "promotional" elements in that page. If the editor was trying to promote her web site, she would have put an actual link to that web site on the page, and she didn't. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 15:54, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Maybe, but it had no relation to Wikipedia; per policy guidelines - "Generally, you should avoid substantial content on your user page that is unrelated to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a general hosting service, so your user page is not a personal website. Your user page is about you as a Wikipedian, and pages in your user space should be used as part of your efforts to contribute to the project." . . Ovum Ltd. company page

Hi Mean as custard, I have updated the the Ovum Ltd. company page after your previous revert due to an over promotional version. Can you please take a look and say what you think about the newer version? If you have any comments I'll be happy to hear them and apply additional changes. Thanks, Alex User:alex.zhitnitsky (talk) 9 October 2011 —Preceding undated comment added 19:33, 9 October 2011 (UTC).

Data Management Inc. company page

Thank you for reviewing my article. This was my first attempt at researching a company and it met with a lot of resistance in the beginning for a lack of notability and other concerns. So I went back and re-worked the whole article, adding at least 12 sources, including the New York Times and Miami Herald, and personal interviews with vice presidents at Data Management Inc. I avoided opinions and limited it to facts uncovered by my research.

My agenda with this article is to inform. My research will hopefully help people understand who this company is, what they create, and their growth over the years. I was inspired by the Microsoft and Google wikis (though my article is nothing by comparison). Where Data Management Inc. began in 1988 and where it is now is what inspired me to tell their story. Once I re-worked it, I understood that it fell within the guidelines of Wikipedia.

I noticed your request that I tone down the promotional material. I have a tendency in my writing to be a little wordy and colorful, so I re-read the article, and then read it again. Unfortunately I can't find anything that was an opinion or suggests a superior product. My research revealed when and how this company started, what products and services they offer, and significant milestones in the company's history. I wanted to ask you to help me. Is there something in particular that leaps off the page at you - something that I can change so that it doesn't rub you as promotional? This article is not intended as a marketing tool, but to inform (as other wikis are doing - Microsoft, Google, Adobe). If there is any thing that I can do that would help make this article sound more like a "just the facts" article then please let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks! Dmarkwilliams (talk) 21:01, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

There was little seriously wrong with the article. The main things I was concerned about was the over-use of the "solutions" buzzword, and the peacocky mission statement, which together made the article sound a little promotional in tone. . . Mean as custard (talk) 17:20, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me. On my use of the word "solutions," I wasn't sure how else to refer to the different delivery systems. Maybe I'll use the word delivery system, option, release, version, or system. "Solutions" was just a generic term I picked up for various products (software and hardware that serve as the merchant's suggested solution to a specific problem). I can see how that word may send a different message so I'll take care of it.

I didn't remember including the mission statement, but records show that there was one. It looks like it was removed.

The statement seemed to capture the company's purpose and value of stakeholders so I included it. My research has shown that they have a history of developing systems that meet the needs defined by their customers. They also appear to promote good values in their people since the founder and management team both attribute their success to those values. So I included it since their history is consistent with that statement, but I also included it since other articles such as Google's wikipedia article mention a part of their mission statement.

Thanks for helping me make this article better. Dmarkwilliams (talk) 20:35, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Hospital Radio Schedule removed

Hi,

I have noticed that you have removed the on-air schedule list from our hospital radio page (Radio Broadgreen).

Can you help me understand why you have done this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.103.24.254 (talk) 09:06, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Because such detail is not appropriate to an encyclopedia article. It is not your hospital radio page, it is a Wikipedia article about a radio station. . . Mean as custard (talk) 18:22, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Willow Wren numbers

Thanks for finding the US Kestrel. According to Ellison there were 7 Willow Wrens (BGA 162, 201, 202, 243, 245, 278 and an Australian, built by F.M Hamilton). Do you have a citeable source for the revision to six or know which one is disputed?TSRL (talk) 09:24, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

G243 is shown in Ellison as the "Red Wren" and hence is a re-registration of the Crested Wren owned by Eustace Thomas.
The Sailplane May 1936 p.89: "In the meantime Thomas was taking his "'C" in the RED WREN"
The Sailplane July 1936 p.139: "The RED (or CRESTED) and GOLDEN WRENS flew at Mam Tor, putting in a total of ahout four hours." :Mean as custard (talk) 12:13, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
Certainly true that Ellison, puzzlingly, has two Red Wren's and the quotes you've found strongly support the identification. The BGA registration records ought to show the re-reg 178 (1934) -> 243 (1936) to nail it.TSRL (talk) 13:53, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Advice

Hi Mean as custard

I respect what you told me last time when I requested to post information on your Ground Rent page but I have now added a page to my website which only provides information to interested parties and doesn't try to sell them anything.

I am interested in adding information about Head Leases and their function under the section of your text called ===English===

The text which I would like to include from my website source is: -

A head lease is a lease between a tenant and a landlord in which overall contractual responsibility is given to one identifiable tenant called the head lessee. This form of lease normally relates to an entire building where the individual units are sold off on long leases known as under leases.

Can you please tell me if you will allow me to do so as I would very much like to post some revelant information on your page and I am asking your permission first as I do not want to annoy you or Wikipedia?

The website link is available upon request but I haven't posted it here as not to annoy you.

If however you still don't think that my website or information is acceptable can you please make some suggestions on how I could change this.

Regards,

Interxion page

Hi Mean as custard, Can you let me know what elements you find to be too advertising focused on the Interxion page? thanks, Rjnicholson — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rjnicholson (talkcontribs) 11:32, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

There just seems to be an overall bias towards telling us how marvelous the company is, with little coverage of neutral or adverse factors, such as how and why the organisation was set up, its history and any critical comment. . . Mean as custard (talk) 12:28, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Ok thats useful - i'll have another look thru to see any areas that can be improved - i dont think there is much in terms of neutral or adverse factors out there. Speedy deletion for UkrSib Asset Management

Hello Mean as custard, Could you help me with article which you've recently checked and tagged for speedy deletion (UkrSib Asset Management)? I'd like to explain that UkrSib AMC is subsidiary of UkrSibbank (BNP Paribas Group) and also one of the biggest and notable Asset Management company in Ukraine. Revision of AUS site

Hello Mean, I have updated the American University of Sharjah site and you reverted it back to the old site, saying it was blatantly promotional. I was just giving the facts about the university. Can you tell me how I update the site that fits with your policy please? --Frances Barton (talk) 06:46, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

It is mainly due to the overall promotional tone of the changes, the excessive use of links to external sites (chiefly the university's own web pages), and the inclusion of uncited "facts" such as:
"Its members contribute actively to the guidance and evaluation of the progress of the university, in order to uphold its academic excellence."
"fosters excellence in teaching, learning and research"
"AUS is working towards creating a culture of sustainability and has set a great example by the opening in 2011 of a state-of-the-art School of Business and Management (SBM) facility"
"AUS places great emphasis on the development of the non-academic aspect of a student’s university life"
"Dedicated to students’ interests and hobbies"
I suggest any future changes you make to the site should provide references to neutral sources unconnected with the university. . . Mean as custard (talk) 09:26, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Department of Premier and Cabinet, Queensland

Shouldn't you have removed the ext. links from Department of Premier and Cabinet, Queensland without removing the content, then tagged it with citation needed, refimprove or better still convert them to references yourself? Why remove both the links and info? - Shiftchange (talk) 02:16, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Because references are not the same as external links; if they were converted to references, they would be primary sources, which are discouraged in Wikipedia articles. . . Mean as custard (talk) 08:27, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

I removed the AfD tag because Exsite Webware is Free Open Source Software (FOSS). While not always "notable", FOSS is verifiable. It can be downloaded and installed by anyone. It's also widely used, which can be verified by a Google Search. At the time the article was written, FOS software didn't need to be notable, mainly because it's always verifiable. However, I could be wrong in this so please correct me if I have misunderstood. Santamoly (talk) 22:45, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

OK, but all articles need at least to give an indication of why the subject is notable. A piece of software may be verifiable, but if it is only used at an obscure research establishment by three men and a dog, then it is not notable. It should not be necessary to do a Google search to find this out; the article should tell us. . . Mean as custard (talk) 08:53, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
It has always been clear that Free Open Source Software (FOSS) doesn't need to be "notable" since it is verifiable. Thus your request that I explain why is puzzling. A quick search lists the following users of Exsite Webware to establish that it's widely used. If this isn't enough, please advise. I can keep adding to the list. Also let me know if you'd like to see this list in the article:
www.golfdigestplanner.com
. . .
<70 links removed>
. . .
www.womeninfinance.ca
Santamoly (talk) 00:12, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
What is needed in the article is references to sources not directly connected with the software, for example independent reviews in widely-distributed magazines, or references in mainstream publications to show it is has lasting notability. Mere "verifiability" is not sufficient. . Mean as custard (talk) 09:34, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
It's quite possible that you're mistaken. Free Open Source Software doesn't require establishing "notability". I offered the list of users to clarify the size of the user base since you were suggesting that the software might only be "used at an obscure research establishment by three men and a dog", but it appears that you deleted the list. Did you delete the list of users to support your notion that the software is only used by "three men and a dog"? This appears to be an improper response, so please let me know what you were thinking. We can continue with the non-issue of notability once we clarify why you're pursuing the "three men and a dog" idea. Santamoly (talk) 04:16, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Can you point me to where on Wikipedia it is stated that FOSS doesn't require notability to be established? I accept that at least 72 organisations use it, but that is not mentioned in the article, and in any case still doesn't make it notable, unless as stated above, there are references to it in sources not directly connected with the software, for example independent reviews in widely-distributed magazines, or references in mainstream publications. . . You could help a lot

You could help a lot, indeed I am surprised you have not spotted some of them. Please see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Helpalot. The hall mark of these accounts is that they create a user page about a mythical company which usually reports: "there are <ref> tags on this page, but the references will not show without a {{Reflist}} template or a <references /> tag". And the real give away is that they are all founded by Judy Ellison. If you spot any more, tag as hoax instantly and ask me or Diannaa (talk · contribs) to block the account. Questions about [A2E] deletions

As the section began with "At the heart of America II lies a commitment to total customer satisfaction. . . America II is committed to fulfilling the quality needs of our customers", it was clearly intended as advertising. A mention (not a list) of certifications may be acceptable if a reference to a third-party independent source shows it is significant.
  • Also, other pages like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heilind_Electronics list articles, so I thought that it is okay to list articles when properly pointing them to the source, can I have those back? or can you tell me what is wrong with them, so I can fix.
I have fixed this article as external links are not encouraged on Wikipedia, per guidelines on WP:EL.

Please let me know, so i can improve the article properly. Thanks, Thadson (talk) 11:18, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

linkedin, facebook, twitter and similar links are not encouraged, as they are not considered "reliable" by Wikipedia. Mean as custard (talk) 11:55, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Volunteering under "Wishaw" (Town)

Can you please make sure that article Volunteering under "Wishaw" (Town) will not be removed, or categorised as advert, which isn't. Volunteering is free of charge service and provides many opportunities for the local communities, which are listed in the very article..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wishaw#Volunteering

From time to time somebody removes/deletes this article which is a bad idea considering a fact that 30% of Scottish population is or was involved in any shape or form of volunteering (information from General Register Office for Scotland).

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.102.15.67 (talk) 12:07, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Are you saying that phrases like "To find about more about the benefits of joining us. . ." do not constitute advertising? Spam removed again. . . Mean as custard (talk) 12:09, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

OK, I have removed that entry now: "To find about more about the benefits of joining us.." Cheers,

All right, it reads less like an advert now, but still fails on several criteria. Wikipedia is not a directory. References must be given to show the notability of the subject. Bare external links are against Wikipedia policy. . . Mean as custard (talk) 12:34, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Well, (Orangemike) said that "this is not a real estate listing service!" however under churches section someone listed all the churches in Wishaw, but in your opinion it is wrong to list all services of the local volunteer centre..

Well done! I gave up. A a member of the local community I can't update wiki. It's not allowed. My proactive behavior it is not good enough. I was only trying to provide better information to the local community.

Bye

Copied from Wikipedia:Grief:

There are five stages of grief which every Wikipedia spammer will go through when his content is removed. These steps are a natural and timeless part of life, but it may be helpful to know what to expect and how to cope. It can be difficult to come to terms with the realization that one's business, interests, or existence in general are not relevant to the rest of the world in the form of a Wikipedia entry.

The five stages of grieving are:

  1. Denial: "This is not spam. My website/article is important/relevant/useful/reliable/unique/spectacular."[2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
  2. Anger: "How dare you do this to me?! You have no right to censor me! I am going to report you!"[9][10][11][12] [13]
  3. Bargaining: "Well, if I can't have my site/article here, neither should that other guy."[14][15]
  4. Depression: "It's very sad to see that a great site like Wikipedia is so very unfair."[16][17][18]
  5. Acceptance: "I am leaving Wikipedia forever. It's your loss. Goodbye, cruel world."[19][20][21][22]

Blanking a User Page without fair warning for a first violation and a debatable one at that

Dear Mean as Custard,

While I understand that people are prone to abusing open communities and someone has to police it, a fair warning would have made me change the user page immediately, why blank it?

Just a little quote from the Wikipedia: User Pages >>>

"Users believed to be in violation of these policies should first be advised on their talk page using Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia.

I noticed that your user page may not meet Wikipedia's user page guideline. If you believe that your userpage does not violate our guidelines, please leave a note here and we can discuss it. As an alternative, you may add {{Db-userreq}} to the top of the page in question and an administrator will delete it, or you can simply edit the page so that it meets Wikipedia's userpage guidelines. Thank you. when immediate action is not otherwise necessary."

Please note it says SHOULD First be advised. It doesn't matter now, just venting my frustration at editorial power abuse. Your contribution by blanking my user page was not constructive and you should be aware of that. Mean as Custard, being anonymous does not mean to not have responsibility. This is a very minor issue, but your transgression made me look into your reputation online and found at least one reference to abusive behaviour from you and it being like mud on wikipedia's respectability.

When a page includes links to the user's own company offering search engine optimization and the like, I tend to shoot first and forget about asking questions. . . Mean as custard (talk) 08:22, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Note regarding Wells International School changes

I reverted your a portion of the changes you had made to this page (for which you had cited "tone down promotional material") due to the requirement laid out by the International Baccalaureate when referencing a school's status as an IB candidate school. (See http://www.ibo.org/school/candidate/) I did leave out the links for the Facebook and Twitter pages according to your changes, though I did return the link to independent reviews. To date, there simply haven't been negative reviews added to that site, which does not justify its removal as an external source of information regarding the school. Please let me know if you disagree. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kuruzovich (talkcontribs) 13:49, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

I have reverted your revert, as most of the material was clearly promotional. I have also removed any reference to the International Baccalaureate, as the presentation requirements laid out by the organisation are unacceptable in a Wikipedia article. . . Questions about The Sarah Jane Brain Foundation deletions

08:37, 11 April 2012‎ Mean as custard (talk | contribs)‎ . . (18,199 bytes) (-44,790)‎ (remove trivia).

Just was hoping you could give me a reasoning for the deletions.

The changes mainly involved the trimming of embedded lists and external links. Lists of trivia are discouraged by Wikipedia, as they tend to swamp and detract from the main content of the article. Any particularly significant items from the lists could be summarised in prose form. . . Mean as custard (talk) 21:33, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited DAI, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Dai (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Impending deletion of blackjack treasure

Hi there,

I have recently added a wikipedia review of a game on Blackjack.com - Blackjack Treasure. I received your message regarding its impending deletion due to No indication of Notability...

If I add a few citations/references to the game and the site within the article, will this be enough to keep the article? If not, I'd appreciate some guidance as I feel most of the article fits with the guidelines?

Thanks

Gameonwiki (talk) 12:30, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes that is the only problem, that there are no independent references to show its notability. . . Mean as custard (talk) 12:31, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Reverting back to Old Status, India.gov.in

Dear ! I have made certain wise changes to the page [India.gov.in|India.gov.in], but I found it reverted back to old state by you. I thank you for your prompt review, but the changes made were mandatory. I work at National Informatics centre, Indian Government and I am authorized to enrich authentic content representing work done by NIC. I can be reached at editor.info@nic.in Hope you will consider the changes as genuine. Thanks 05:19, 7 May 2012 (UTC) --Nationalportal (talk)

You clearly have a conflict of interest with the subject. You removed all the independent references and added lots of external links to your own site, as well as adding promotional new content. None of this is acceptable to Wikipedia, and the fact that you claim the changes made were mandatory would be laughable to any serious Wikipedia editor. If you make any further similar changes your Wikipedia account may be blocked. . . Mean as custard (talk) 07:08, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

I am not being offensive and i didn't intend to promote any content. I would take care of COIs as suggested by you.Should I proceed further removing all the links to india.gov.in. I wish have the content updated, especially new sections.

Thanks --Nationalportal (talk)

No-one suggested you were being offensive, but new users of Wikipedia sometimes need some fairly robust guidance. As long as you fully understand the implications of WP:COI, it may be permissible to correct errors of fact and add notable new content as long as references are provided to independent, neutral sources. . . Short question regarding the changes for Guardian Industries

Hello there,

I was just wondering if you could give me a short feedback for the changes you made at the Guardian Industries page. I am quite new here so I wanted to know if it is forbidden to use the "R" sign for the registered trademark? I thought it is a fixed part to a brand name so that's why I attached it. Those products are patented by Guardian Ind.

Thanks for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by ViviIMB10 (talkcontribs) 07:48, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

"R" signs. "TM", copyright symbols etc. are discouraged in Wikipedia, as they tend to be a hallmark of a promotional article. The fact that the products are patented by Guardian Ind. is probably not significant unless, for example, the trademark has been infringed or challenged in a notable way, in which case this may be mentioned in the article. Spider-Man® may be a registered trademark of Marvel Comics, but the article about the character is not covered with little ® symbols. . . Mean as custard (talk) 08:03, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! I wasn't aware of that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ViviIMB10 (talkcontribs) 14:28, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Protection?

Thanks for your anti-spam work! The frequent vandalism to your userpage led TheGeneralUser to request that your userpage be semiprotected, but the admin who responded to the request declined because you hadn't asked for it yourself. Would you like it to be protected or semiprotected? If not, ignore me; if so, leave a note at my talk page saying semi- or full- and either indefinite or specifying a duration for protection. Nyttend (talk) 14:59, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Done. If you change your opinion, wishing either for unprotection or for full protection, you can request it either at my talk or at WP:RFPP. Nyttend (talk) 15:25, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Your user page

Hi Mean as custard, i see that my request for semi-protection of your user page has been done. Though in the first place the reviewing administrator did not approve it because it was not from you. Seeing as your user page has been vandalized many times that request was the most appropriate one as generally most user pages are protected in response to high risk of vandalism which your user page has had a history of. Anyways see you around :) and Happy Editing! TheGeneralUser (talk) 13:19, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I've not been adding links indiscriminately, I've focussed on a few key pages that are directly relevant to our Univerity organisation CoEBio3. Could you please revert them back?

Thanks,

Kirk

I am not promoting my University any more than The University of Exeter, Graz, Iowa, Delft, Stockholm, MIT - all are already on the wikipedia "Biocatalysis" webpage. They are all key academic partners of ours - we are part of the same close network, and routinely collaborate with these institutions. Reference 6 "Nicholas J. Turner" is of direct relevance - Prof. Turner is director of CoEBio3. He is a leading expert in the field of Biocatalysis and as such should be an external link.

Kirk

If there was a Wikipedia article about YOUR University organisation it would be permissible to add the link to it. The articles you have been adding links to appear to have no direct connection with YOUR organisation so the obvious conclusion is that you are trying to promote YOUR Univerity organisation. . .
