Arrondissement pages
Hi, I noticed you were improving those articles and meant to contact you, but just didn't get around to it. If you're doing this work manually, it might be easier to let me know what changes you'd like made and I can probably change my Jave code that generates the articles and then re-run the bot. Or I could just mail you the source files to allow you to do global search and replace if that fitted in with what you want to do. Dlyons493 Talk 20:44, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi this is eagle, I was going to try untill I realized that there are not enough categorys. (I think) If you come up with a standard plan, I will be glad to assist. Just let me know and I will run regex using the AutoWikiBrowser for you. If you take the lead on the plan I will be glad to carry it out for you.
- Another reason I stopped was that I am not from France, and I don't know anything about france. {Please give me some idea's) I really would like to help. (I wish I knew what to do...some advice please)
- P.S. I am running regex right now looking for restruants that were placed in the food stub category, and moving them to the appropriate location.

Page Blanking
On 08-Feb, you blanked Benfeld (canton) and Canton of Benfeld. Blanking pages is generally considered a bad idea. I've reverted them to the previous versions. If you believe these redirects should be deleted, please follow redirect portion of the deletion procedures. If you believe different content should go there, please create stubs. Thanks! -- JLaTondre 01:27, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- The problem I was trying to resolve was that both these Benfeld canton pages redirected to the Benfeld commune page, which itself seems to have quite inaccurate information. I'll leave your reverts for the time being, but as part of my broader project to tidy up all canton pages (see my user page for more details), hopefully more meaningful content will be added soon. Kiwipete 20:27, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'd recommend that you pick one of the canton pages and turn it into a stub. You only need a few sentences and an appropriate stub tag. Then you can redirect the other canton page to that one. Stubs are a great way of handeling cases like this. -- JLaTondre 20:57, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
French region infoboxes
Your links made no sense, they linked to lists of communes, cantons, and arrondissements in départements. For instance the Ile-de-France infobox linked to lists of communes in the Ile-de-France département, which makes no sense, there is no such thing as the "Ile-de-France département". Image copyright problem with Image:Reg25.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Reg25.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: TemplateName
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or ask for help at Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. Thank you. -- Carnildo 12:33, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- I've had a look at the Wikipedia:Image copyright tags page, but am not sure which tag to use. The INSEE license (in English) seems to indicate that it is freely available, but there seem to be a number of different tags that might be appropriate. Can you please give me some help on this? Regards, Kiwipete 22:52, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
While it is possible that the page should not be a redirect, this is not solved by removing the data in the page. please address this at Redirects for Deletion. Blanking pages is a bad idea as stipulated by JLaTondre earlier in this discussion page and is considered vandalism by many wikipedia editors. You will find that blanking the page in an attempt to delete it will merely lead to it being repeatedly recreated by other users. I am going to revert your blanking again and implore you to address the deletion in a proper forum (RfD) or replace the redirect pages with meaningful content. I would do so myself except I have neither the expertise nor the time to aquire said expertise. Usrnme h8er 03:08, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
Martinique
Hi, I finally got round to looking at the differences in communes between the version I originally posted and yours. Some of these are obvious - for the CAFs I've numbered the communes, whereas you've aggregated them (which is probably better). The communes of Le Morne-Vert and Bellefontaine seem no longer to exist - as far as I can see, the latter has merged with Case-Pilote into Case-Pilote-Bellefontaine and I don't know what happened Le Morne-Vert.
But Fonds-Saint-Denis still exists as far as I know.
Do you have any more information - e.g. a link to the relevant INSEE page? Dlyons493 Talk 16:59, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
- P.S. The page I think should be authorative is [1]
- Um, possibly you were intending to reply to someone else, but I've had a look at Communes of the Martinique département and also Cantons of the Martinique département and they seem to agree with the INSEE page you have quoted above. In particular, the communes of Le Morne-Vert and Bellefontaine are both listed. Case-Pilote-Bellefontaine is a canton, not a commune. It comprises the communes of Case-Pilote and Bellefontaine. I agree with you that the commune of Fonds-Saint-Denis still exists. Let me know if I can be of any further help. Kiwipete 08:41, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
Belfast Pogrom
This period of communal violence began on 21 July 1920 with the shipyard clearances or expulsions. This one day event (shipyard clearances) is well documented and referenced in the linked article. On 21 July 1920 thousands of Belfast shipyard workers were driven from their work with much violence. This one day event deserves to be included on July 21. Here's one reference to a newspaper article that tells of the events of this date and number of workers forced from their jobs and the ensuing violence etc: [1]. Palisades1 (talk) 16:51, 7 May 2022 (UTC)
- As I requested above, please discuss this on the article's talk page. It is not appropriate to make it a personal matter for me. Thanks, Kiwipete (talk) 02:54, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
January 15 and December 24
I see that you reverted my edits regarding January 15 and December 24. May I kindly ask you to reconsider those reverts, as I have not referenced my addition by a wiki, as you claimed, but with the ADB, a major German biographical reference work. When one uses Template ADB, a link to the German wikisource is produced. This, however, does not mean that the content was created in this wiki, the content is conversely contained in the written version of the ADB. I would therefore kindly ask you to reconsider your reverts, as using this template is probably the most common way to cite ADB. Kind regards! WatkynBassett (talk) 14:25, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- Sure, no problems. Thanks for the explanation. I wonder if ADB shouldn't be mentioned in WP:RSP as a reliable source. What do you think? Kiwipete (talk) 05:27, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- Many thanks for your quick action! Much appreciated! I could see ADB added to WP:RSP very well - even if its content is a bit old and the writing somethings seems a bit baroque ... WatkynBassett (talk) 19:08, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
21 July
Ok on July 21, 1920 there really were major sectarian motivated violence at the shipyards in Belfast. That day set off communal violence that lasted several years. I will enter a third reference which will hopefully satisfy you.Palisades1 (talk) 23:35, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
- It's not a question about providing more references. The requirement is that each entry in a DOY article has a wiki link to an existing article. In the case of events, that needs to be an event that took place on a specific, individual day - this is the policy spelt out at WP:DOYSTYLE. Please have a look at how other entries do this. If you wish to ask general questions, please do so at the project talk page. If you want to make another edit on July 21 or any other DOY page, please discuss it first on its talk page. Kiwipete (talk) 08:07, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
"All events, births, deaths, and holidays should be linked to existing Wikipedia articles and those articles should mention the specific events. Per WP:USERG, such a wikilink is not considered a reliable source, and a direct source is required."
This event listed was linked to Belfast Pogrom which has a section on Shipyard clearnces and a reference to a direct and reliable source: Glennon, Kieran (27 October 2020). "The Dead of the Belfast Pogrom". The Irish Story. Retrieved 21 March 2022. If newspaper articles from that time be better Im happy to replace the above reference with one of them.
The Belfast Pogrom began with the shipyard clearances/expulsions. Palisades1 (talk) 11:59, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
I saw that you made an edit to this page, so I hope you know a little more about it than I do. I'm going through links to disambiguation pages ("Roman") and there is a link to Romans in this article, referring to a town in France. There are two options on the Roman disambig page, and I don't know which. Could you please take a look and link the article to the correct page? Thanks for your help. --Mmounties (Talk) 15:00, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hi I've put the correct disamig to Romans, Ain into the Bourg-en-Bresse page. Dlyons493 Talk 15:31, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
Cantons of France
Kiwipete - It's funny you mention INSEE - because that is the source I am using for verification. Check this area on INSEE ([2]) - it shows the map of the cantons, with Grenoble (canton non precise), and then this one ([3]) shows the commune of Grenoble. Unless I am missing something on the map that you can help me with - or unless the maps are not correctly showing the cantons (as they do not match the list that you pointed out to me). Can you help? Rarelibra 14:18, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
- You're probably busy with things. But I am continuing to make edits as I go through the lists of Cantons. You'll see I back up my edits with the official INSEE number corresponding to the edit. Hope this helps. Rarelibra 16:01, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry, I have been preoccupied with other matters. I've looked at the INSEE pages you mention, but I'm not sure what the term "canton non précisé" actually means. Do you know? I have also checked the canton list from the Conseil General website for Isere ([4]) and it does not include a canton of Grenoble. I think the confusion arises where a single commune (e.g. Grenoble) is split across multiple cantons (e.g. Grenoble 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc). Normally, a single canton comprises multiple communes. Can you check this further before continuing with your edits? I'm glad to help in any way I can. Regards, Kiwipete 00:59, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- From what I can tell, the INSEE site says
- From what I can tell, the INSEE site says
I don't speak French, but it roughly translates to:
"In the case of the communes cut out in cantons, the various cantonal fractions of the commune appear with their number of code in the list of the commune. It is also indicated for these communes a number of code for the "not specified cantons". It is generally used when it is not wanted or that one cannot characterize a cantonal fraction for the commune. The code of canton not specified is thus addressed only to whole communes. At present the values of the cantons not specified are included/understood between 84 and 99."
So I'm not sure, but in mapping there is no easy way, it seems, to break down the cantons if they are cross-commune? Rarelibra 18:01, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
I reverted your revert to this page. Seems reasonable. I have this ethic where I have to tell people when I revert their revert, lest I should be labelled troll. --Madnessinshorts 13:38, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what "reasonable" applies to - your original edit, my reversion, or this comment? A few people, myself included, have been standardising all arrondissement pages, including the categories that they belong to, and it would be nice to keep them all following the same pattern. Are you going to apply your update to all arrondissement pages, or can I re-revert your change? Kiwipete 01:05, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Anglicization of French terms
Hi Pete- Thanks for your work on the above--I've been wanting to tackle some of that myself. On a related topic, I think the division categories in the Administrative divisions of France template should be made singular. What do you think? Here's a discussion I had about it. -Eric (talk) 14:05, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, Eric. I've replied on the talk page. Kiwipete 03:20, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
I also wish to add my thanks for the work you have been doing on this issue. I have been carrying out similar work, disambiguating the links, removing italics and translating all terms to English, including Préfecture → Prefectures in France, and moving pages to English titles. Your work is appreciated as there is a lot to do. Thanks, and continue the good work. --Bob 08:01, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
- Cheers, Bob. I've been a bit worried that my rather limited edits have made your job, which I certainly have noticed and very much appreciate, a bit harder. All I've been trying to do is get rid of all links to the now old-fashioned Cantons of xxx département pages, which I still have some left of. Kiwipete 09:14, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Anglicisation
Hello - I'm contacting you because of your involvement with many French articles. A few have undertaken the task of "Anglicising" French terms in Wiki articles (eg/: "Région => Region"; "Département => Departement") - there doesn't seem to have been any discussion about this, so your point of view would be welcome. I think a good place for this discussion would be the WP:FR page. Thank you. THEPROMENADER 14:33, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Hello - I'm contacting you because of your involvement with using English instead of foreign terms in articles. A few are trying to "Anglicise" French terms in Wiki articles according to current guidelines but there is some resistance (eg/: "Région => Region"; "Département => Departement"). Your input would be appreciated here. Thankyou. --Bob 17:04, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Halt the Anglicisation
Hello Kiwipete. I'm sure you're quite aware that there is an ongoing discussion about your and Gcampbell's unwarrented (and half-baked) "Anglicisation" of thousands of France-related articles at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_France - what's more, there is now a WP:RFC open about it. You would do very well to cease. I'm sure you'll understand my returning the articles you "Anglicised" these last days to their former state until discussion is complete - and until you have a widespread consensus for continuing to transform the long-established contributions of so many in this singular way. Cheers. THEPROMENADER 23:15, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
Addendum: I note now that you have only "Anglicised" article wikilinks to match other already-Anglicised article titles - this is not as bad as what I originally thought, but this change is still unwarrented - and rather "in the face" of the ongoing discussion about this. I am of the advice that article titles will indeed be Anglicised, but still I would wait for this result to become more than my own prediction. Again cheers. THEPROMENADER 23:27, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, please stop immediately. These changes are very contreversial and there is already a discussion in progress concerning its validity. Please show some respect for the dozens of editors who wrote these articles. --Aquarelle 12:16, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

Geography stub categories
Hi - it's taken a couple of months, but I've just noticed that you crated several geo-stub categories for New Zealand regions. Those templates had deliberately been left upmerged into the main New Zealand geography stubs category, since they fell below the threshold of 60 stubs necessary for separate categories (too many small, fractionated categories actually makes it harder for editors to find articles to expand). If some of them don't grow soon, they may need to be deleted and re-upmerged. Notice that the categories contained WPSS-cat at the top, with its message:
This category is maintained by WikiProject Stub sorting. Please propose new stub templates and categories here before creation. |

Cantons changing of arrondissements
You'll find the change on III.VIII, page 148 (140 of the pdf) of this document [5]. A lot of changes are happening now that the changes can be done by the préfet and not by the ministre. Changes have been done in 26, 27, 33, 39, 41, 43 (this one, Saugues), 51, 62, 72, 77 & 974. One arrondissement (Arcachon) has also been created in 33. I've removed the communes from the arrondissement of Le Puy but I still need to put them in the one from Brioude. If you need to contact me in emergency, you can write to Birdie which is my french nick and that I check every day. Gato76680 19:02, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, Image:Arr613.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. I have added a "prod" template to the article Lagarde-d'Apt, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. -- gorgan_almighty 12:53, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Noting your objection to the prod deletion proposal tag I put on the Lagarde-d'Apt article, I have moved the issue to AfD instead. That way a larger number of people can review the issue, and a consensus can be reached. You will find the relevant AfD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lagarde-d'Apt. Please do not remove the afd1 tag from thre top of the article unless a keep consensus is reached and the AfD is concluded. —gorgan_almighty 15:37, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the accent (which I can't seem to be able to type with my keyboard). However, the official website says 'tracks', not traces...Also, I've added the reference but in actual truth that link would hold for the whole history section...Zigzig20s 09:33, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Do you agree with the current format? It should be applied to ALL articles. The eccl. (shit) history is to a separate article, and also, hopefully, deprived of all the Catholic POV taken from that horrendous 1910 encyclopedia. Also, if a list has just an entry, what's the reason to keep it? the only mayor listed is present in the infobox too. Let me know and good work. --Attilios 09:16, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
Cantons and land area
For land areas, the authority is www.ign.fr. They give the land area of communes, but I don't know if they give the land area of cantons. If not, then you'll have to add up the land area of the communes inside a given canton. Of course that works only for cantons made up of full communes. For cantons who cut across communes, your only chance is to check the websites of the conseils généraux which sometimes list the land areas of their cantons. Godefroy 13:00, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
Problems with Virgile1991
Hi again. It seems we're having a problem with User:Virgile1991. This guy has been repeatedly changing the region flags in the French regions articles (check for instance Poitou-Charentes or Picardie), replacing the current region flags with the flags of the old provinces of France. I thought he would stop, but no, I have to check these articles everyday now which is time consuming. Do you know if there's a place where I could report his/her attitude? He/she seems very young and not really interested in discussing things rationally. Godefroy 14:12, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
- Have a look at Edit wars and Dispute resolutions. This may give you some guidelines that you can follow. As to what the actual flags should be, I'm no expert, but it may be helpful if you can give some external references for both your and Virgile1991's preferences that would support your case. Arrondissements of Eure
Yes, it's at the bottom of the page: Arrondissements of Eure. If a list comprises basically the contents of a category, it had better have something quite interesting about it, but the only thing in this article are the three arondissements. If you say there are over a hudnred articles like, then they should be deleted as well, or at least all merged into a List of arondissements of France. DevAlt 08:22, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
- And in fact there is a List of arrondissements of France, so why we need a hundred articles telling us the same information already contained in a list and a category but which carries no extra interest is beyond me. Perhaps you could explain? DevAlt 08:26, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
- I would suggest that you propose any changes to these articles at WP:FR. I would note that these articles do contain population change information not found elsewhere. Also, these pages are linked to from the template Template:Infobox Department of France, which is used in all department articles. Kiwipete 09:03, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
France, football, and POV
Hi, I know you're interested in French region articles, so perhaps you'd be willing to help with this. As you may or may not know, Guadeloupe football team is allowed to take part in North American championships (but not in the World Cup where only the French national team is allowed), and this month there's the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup taking place in the US (this is the North American cup, a bit like the Eurocup). Guadeloupe reached the semi-final, media talked about it, and that's how I discovered about the Gold Cup and about Guadeloupe taking part in that cup. I read the relevant articles on Wikipedia to find more information, and that's where all the troubles started.
Basically, to make this short, the people taking part in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Football have decided to name teams from countries and regions alike as "national teams". So we have Guadeloupe national football team, Brittany national football team, Andalucia national football team, Cantabria national football team, and even, believe it or not, Occitania national football team. There's a discussion going on at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#"national" team for subnational entities?. I've tried to explain that these subnational entities are not nations, that calling them nation is POV, but to no avail. Unfortunately the discussion attracts very little attention outside of this circle of people interested in the WikiProject Football. Maybe you could have a look and express an outside view.
The second thing is the 2007 Gold Cup article itself. People there represent the Guadeloupe team with this flag: [6]. As you probably already know, this flag has no official recognition and is not widely used, yet they insist on using it. This despite the fact that the Guadeloupe team uses the French tricolor flag in the Gold Cup and not this fantasy flag that they insist on using here. Yet when I tried to restore the French flag I was immediately reverted. You can see the discussion that I opened here: Talk:2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup#Flag of the Guadeloupe football team. I've provided sources and links there. Again, since you know a bit about French regions and their flags, perhaps you can express an outside view on this. I tried to explain that this flag has no recognition, that this is not like, say, the official flag of a US state, but to no avail.
It seems very hard to discuss things rationally there, so it would be good to open the discussion to outside people. If you know other people that could contribute, please let them know. Thanks. Godefroy 22:57, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your message. According to my French-English dictionary, arrondissement translates as district. Wikipedia policy is to use English and you are surely aware that arrondissement is not a word in common English usage so I dont think arrondissement really qualifies. Your argument that arrondissement is more specific in an administrative context is rather meaningless: Any word is more specific in an administrative context. In the UK, district is a very specific word in an administrative context.
I am therefore very tempted to return the page to "Districts of France", but I am in no hurry and will do more research over a few days (or maybe longer if i am busy). In the meantime I will make some minor preliminary edits to the intro to similar effect. Please feel free to comment further (although I may not reply fast). Mesoso2 20:46, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- District has a specific meaning in french (a division of the départements between 1789 & 1801 and an old sort of community of communes). Using it instead of arrondissement would be a confusion of senses. Gato76680 12:31, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes thats ok. I want to put an image at the right top though -a photo. Hey above what is the problem. Many countries have their own nmaing systems for administrative divisions that ar euique to that country. IN the Ukraine and Russia they are known as Raions. We use this name on wikipedia as with others. iN Mongolia a district is known as a Sum and we also use this term on wikipedia so there is absolutely no problem with Arrondissements ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 09:42, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

le Gers
I have spent a couple of summers in the Gers being corrected by the natives, both in French and in English....I have family there. Trust me it IS le Gers and the Gers not just Gers! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gordito666 (talk • contribs) 22:17, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- Where you spend your time is absolutely irrelevant. Fact is that the official name of the department is "Gers". Period. olivier 08:43, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
Woaaaah, I dont mean this to be personal. It is le Gers, or the Gers. If you refer to French websites, or the Mairies in the department you will notice it is 'Departemnet du Gers and not simply Department de Gers. While simply stating its name, such as the title of the wikipedia article it may be acceptable to refer to it simply as 'Gers' you will find that it is usually referred to with le (en Francais ou 'The' en Anglais). Please review the official websites to see what I mean, Id be happy to discuss further if you still disagree, perhaps over a glass of local Armagnac in Auch! Gordito666 03:06, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
Hello. Please do not insert trivia into the introductory paragraph of the article on Aix-en-Provence. You included a mistranslation of an autoroute sign « Aix - ville d'eau, ville d'art » with the description "marketing tagline". This is inaccurate, unsourced and WP:POV. You might also like to know that Aix is a "ville fleurie" (official source: municipal plaque installed in September 2007 on roundabout near autoroute entrance at Pont de l'Arc). Would you translate this as "flowery town"? I'd say "city in bloom". BTW there was a huge welcome sign for the All Blacks on the tourist office while they were here. I included their visit in the trivia section of the article. Cheers, Mathsci 09:46, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
- You would notice from my change description that I was simply moving text (that someone else had previously added) from the article Arrondissement of Aix-en-Provence to the more appropriate article Aix-en-Provence. As for it being "a mistranslation of an autoroute sign", the description can indeed be found on this website which I have now included in the external links section of the article. I have no idea how to translate "ville fleurie." What has the All Blacks got to do with any of this? Kiwipete 09:04, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
- The english website of the Aix tourist office is not very good. For example apart from their poor translation of "Ville d'eau, Ville d'art" (which you will note does not appear on the french master site), they write, "News magazine: Our picks, what event is occuring, main interests..." Hopeless. The french version is more up to date and has a clearly visible union jack in the right corner, so I will restore it, leaving your own helpful addition. BTW I mentioned the All Blacks above just as a way of indicating to you that there is a place in the article for miscellaneous facts and because you appear to be from New Zealand. On the other hand I am what might be called a whinging pom :) As you may guess, I also live in Aix. Cheers, Mathsci 09:59, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Bonjour and welcome to the first WikiProject France newsletter!! It should become a monthly special of our project, but until the next issue, here are some points to consider for the month:
- In an effort to determine the active members from the inactive, all members are asked to simply sign on my special userpage.
- I have slightly rearranged and updated the Project page, putting all the featured lists in collapsible tables. This unclutteres the page and you only have to see them if you want to. Give your feelings at the talk page.
- I have made a Wikipedia advert for our project, Image:Qxz-ad108.gif, what do you think? Personally I feel the words need improving ...
- There are still map problems at Template:French commune - any help at resolving them would be greatly appreciated.
- What about starting a monthly drive? We currently have no Featured Portals (except for the Basque Portal which really isn't French any way), so how about improving Portal:France??? I don't know what's exactly wrong but the criteria can be seen at Wikipedia:Featured portal criteria.
It doesn't seem like a lot, so I hope we will still have enough problems for nexts months issue. Salut till the next issue, ChrisDHDR (17:17, 10 November 2007 (UTC)).
It's been one high aiming month! The French WikiProject and related pages have been aiming high for Christmas - and have received an equal number of presents in return!
- The French Portal is now a Featured Portal!!! It passed its Candidacy with 100%. Special thanks go to NYArtsnWords and all those that have made this Portal work.
- The Newsletter has made it to a second issue. You can find its page at WikiProject France/Outreach/Newsletter and its archives at WikiProject France/Outreach/Newsletter/Archives.
- A new page has been setup (WikiProject France/Links) to provide an index of the Projects/Portals pages (as well as helping newbees). When creating any pages in the Project/Portal namespace, please add them to the index page. This page also give WP:FRANCE members a handy watchlist.
- As like last time, members are asked to renew their memberships at Wikipedia:WikiProject France/Members.
- I will be on holiday when the next issue is meant to come out so could some generous person(s) please do the next issue at Wikipedia:WikiProject France/Outreach/Newsletter.
Well, that's this issue. Au revoir et à bientôt till the next time, ChrisDHDR (18:57, 9 December 2007 (UTC)).

Caro or Çaro
Hi, the sources seem to be contradictory on this point. Having read the French wikipedia article at fr:Çaro (it was moved there from Caro a year ago, see [7]) and the Basque name "Zaro", which implies a "s"-sound and not a "k"-sound, I assumed it was a simple typo or overeager diacritics removal. You're right that INSEE calls it Caro, I'm not sure how reliable quid is. On the 1:25,000 IGN maps (accessible via http://www.geoportail.fr) it's Çaro, on larger scale IGN maps it's Caro. Strange. Seeing the "toponymie" section of the French wikipedia article, I suppose Çaro is correct, because all older forms have a "s"- or "sh"-sound. Markussep Talk 10:50, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I like the work you have done on this template. I have a tool just about ready that will generate all French department commune templates, and I'll incorporate your design into mine. Cheers, Kiwipete (talk) 03:13, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks Kiwipete. I was thinking of going another mile after figuring out more of wikipedia's syntax. Maybe added group headings of the cantons within the arrondissements, then a list of the communes within the cantons. Sort of like what's at the following link under Navbox, Navbox with columns, and Navbox with collapsible groups together - Former French colonies in Africa and the Indian Ocean Template:Navbox_with_collapsible_groups#Nesting_other_Navbox_forms. That can be something that's done in the future though, with another tool or bot.
I'm glad you know how to program a tool to automate this, I don't. Thanks. --Formerly the IP-Address 24.22.227.53 (talk) 03:21, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- I agree, more fancy stuff can be added later. At the moment, I'm still purifying my commune database to get all the correct disambiguated names. Then I'll just run a perl script to generate the templates. Kiwipete (talk) 04:24, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds great, it'll be nice to see them made. I did finish with the fancy stuff, but don't know how difficult it would be to write a script for the new template layout, or even whether you want to (the new template is taller than the old one, which might be a negative. --Formerly the IP-Address 24.22.227.53 (talk) 00:39, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Templates for French départements
I've seen some of the templates you made, and they are huge. I think it would be more appropriate to list only arrondissements or cantons in these departmental templates, and list communes in templates made for the cantons. Blanchardb-Me•MyEars•MyMouth-timed 02:16, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, some them are large, but they have a default status of collapsed, so they don't take up a lot of screen real estate unless they are actually opened by the user. See here for more discussions. Kiwipete (talk) 02:25, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for finishing these templates, but please pay attention to the default sort order. Basically, any name that starts with a definite article (la, le, or les) is sorted under the next word, and all letters thereafter are sorted disregarding spaces (hyphens).

You asked (or mentioned) a few edits to my userspace from an IP you own. Those edits were made by the MediaWiki::Bot automatic test script. Either you, or someone using your server, (or possibly a CPAN Testers automatic smoke tester) attempted to install the Perl module MediaWiki::Bot and in the test phase, these anonymous edits were made to confirm proper editing and unicode functionality. I only reply to inform you of this so that you can ensure that this was done with your consent. If there is no further issue, no response is necessary. Re: French cantons
The only way I can see to find the demographic evolution of a canton is to find the individual commune's demographic evolution, such as at http://www.recensement.insee.fr/chiffresCles.action?zoneSearchField=&codeZone=04230-COM&idTheme=3 . These can be found at the insee link on the french wikipedia (in the commune's references) and then click on the link that says "Evolution demographie" or something like that. You can then add these populations together. French User Badmood (which may or may not be a bot) already did these calculations, and I simply copied it over from there. I wouldn't know how to cite all of those links however. ~EDDY (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 18:01, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference
Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.
On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true
. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false
in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.
For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.
Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 20:45, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

French commune populations
The horizontal version of Historical populations doesn't work when you have a long list because it doesn't adjust to the infobox on the right side. It always gets pushed down below, leaving a big blank space. Ideally, we need a horizontal template that adjusts to the space available. Until that is created, I will continue to use the vertical one. Ksnow (talk) 11:54, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Ksnow

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite
Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 09:23, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

would produce a list similar to the one here. You could alternatively use the user subpages template, withKiwipete
producing a list similar to the one on that template's page. Hopefully this helps! Seagull123 Φ 11:38, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello. I remember being slightly confused about the capes during the writing of the article, but pieced it together across a few different sources. I just replaced ENZB with a reliable secondary source that clarifies the issue. It reads: "The City of Edinburgh left New Zealand in January, 1810, in continuation of her voyage towards the Cape of Good Hope. Her course lay south-east across the Pacific; she did not sail the route now followed by the modern steamer, for it was intended to round Cape Horn." - HappyWaldo (talk) 23:31, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
- Crikey, what a story. Thanks for the new source, the trip still seems really bizarre. I'm a New Zealander, and this is a story from our past that I have never heard of. Kiwipete (talk) 05:21, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

First of all, thank you for adding your reason for doing so. However, I noticed that, even in tha same article, there are numerous other examples that fail to comply with this "need", for instance:
- Lothair I is crowned King of Italy by Pope Paschal I. (no article on the crowing itself)
- 1614 – In Virginia, Native American Pocahontas marries English colonist John Rolfe. (no article on the wedding itself)
- The Mayflower sets sail from Plymouth, Massachusetts on a return trip to England. (no article on this journey itself)
Could you, please, explain why only my contribution was in this particular "need"?
Thank you very much in advance, --Avacalop (talk) 13:15, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, that's a new requirement put in place by the DOY project. There are lots of those old entries still in place - hopefully over time, reliable sources will be found. You can find more information at the project page, and even join the project yourself. You've made some great additions already :). Thanks, Kiwipete (talk) 19:45, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Avacalop - how come you have ignored my reply and reinstated your edit? I think it's clear from my explanation above that new entries have to have a link to a wiki article specifically about the event. I'll revert it again. Please ask any more questions you have on the talk page, not here. Kiwipete (talk) 08:24, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hello again, @Kiwipete.
- I'm sorry, I missed your previous reply and this is why I reverted your change. I would never ignore something like this.
- Could you, please, look more closely to the examples I mentioned? I think that you will find that one of them is also a new entry just like mine and, according to what you say, should follow the same "need".
- Again, apologies for missing your previous message. Could you, please, help me understand this difference?
- Thank you in advance! Avacalop (talk) 08:39, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
- I can see those three entries you refer to in a version of the page as at 27 September 2020, so no sorry, they are not new entries. Kiwipete (talk) 09:04, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hello and thank you for your reply. So
- 1933 – Andorran Revolution: The Young Andorrans occupy the Casa de la Vall and force the government to hold democratic elections with universal male suffrage.
- is not a new revision, is it? Just to be clear, you have been very helpful! Avacalop (talk) 06:05, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
- Is "1933 Andorran Revolution" a new entry? No, I can also see that on the page version I linked to above. Kiwipete (talk) 07:53, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
- Let me make myself more clear, @Kiwipete
- Is the following line of contribution mew?
- 1933 – Andorran Revolution: The Young Andorrans occupy the Casa de la Vall and force the government to hold democratic elections with universal male suffrage.
- I think it is. Please, kindly clarify. Avacalop (talk) 15:12, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Kiwipete Hello again.
- Would you please kindly explain why other new contributions (after the new rule) such as the last one I just mentioned are have not been removed, while mine has?
- Your admin help would be much appreciated.
- Thanks again! Avacalop (talk) 03:54, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Your reversion restored a ref error msg as can be seen in the current (your) version at reference No. 24. I removed the title from the author parameter. The previous edit to mine (by an IP) added in some links, which produced a 'wikilink conflict' error msg. which I also corrected not really being aware of what the edit was trying to do; (AGF). I note your edit removed their changes so the error msg went also. Not 'weird' by me, just someone working through the list of error msgs. Eagleash (talk) 09:31, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing that out, @Eagleash:. But your first edit left the text "*2005 – Manidhar Ch" embedded in the 1994 entry for Guillaume Cizeron - that's what I was referring to as "weird". Thanks for fixing it all up. Kiwipete (talk) 03:52, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- I think that was all added in the edit before mine, whch I had not seen at the time of editing, as I went straight to the ref with the 'wikilink conflict' msg; taking the links out of the text removed the error msg. I was not aware that there was anything else amiss with the ref. Anyway seems fixed now. Cheers. Eagleash (talk) 04:19, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Nice work going through making the Junior track cycling champs articles I have a query about 1983 World Juniors Track Cycling Championships. The current medal table makes no sense and does not correlate to the results. Just wondering if you hadn't done that yet or maybe I'm mis-reading. Cheers Paulpat99 (talk) 20:42, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot, @Paulpat99. I copied the article from the 1982 one, got the countries right, but obviously forgot to check the medal count. I attended these championships, which was a great event, and thought that there should be some record of it here. Kiwipete (talk) 03:22, 24 June 2022 (UTC)
May 28th 2020
First off, apologies as I am very unfamiliar with wikipedia and have no idea if I'm following sop in anything that I'm doing on here.
Regarding the entry for May 28th and the taking of the 3rd precinct, My understanding is that the edit was reverted with the reason that "There is no link to a wiki article specifically about this event". The event is specifically mentioned within that article which the inline link directs to (the George Floyd protests). The 3rd precinct's burning is explicitly discussed in a subsection of the article. This is structurally similar to the entry on Harambe's death which links to Harambe's page which has a subsection discussing the specific event of Harambe's death. In short, I assert the event is historically significant and warrants inclusion and based on the established content on the page, I don't see a reasonable basis for it specifically being struck from the page because it doesn't have an article solely dedicated to the specific event.
Again, apologies if my wires are crossed and I'm not even talking to the right person about this. I'm not the sharpest when it comes to these things and the entire UX design around wikipedia editing is largely esoteric and inscrutable to me. 2600:1702:2EA0:27B0:E42F:86:AA2A:621A (talk) 13:01, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- The article you link to has no specific single relationship with that particular date. You may not be familiar with our guidelines, but it is probably a good idea to work on that before you edit it--and before you restore your edit
twicethree times, which is called "edit warring". Thank you. Drmies (talk) 00:36, 31 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for finally replying here. I read and understood the written requirements of the page. Perhaps you did not notice the details on the page regarding the event in question? I will paste the link below. The date, May 28th, is clearly indicated for the even in question. I am not undersanding on what basis this entry is being undone when other entries such as Harambe's death, which has no specific article stands. A quick glance above that, the entry "2008 – The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly of Nepal formally declares Nepal a republic, ending the 240-year reign of the Shah dynasty." also has no specific article and yet it stands.
- Why is this entry being singled out as not fitting the criteria for a valid entry when it meets the same spirit and goes even beyond the standard as set by other established entries?
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Floyd_protests_in_Minneapolis%E2%80%93Saint_Paul#Burning_of_the_third_precinct_police_station 2600:1702:2EA0:27B0:861:7927:F8F9:F339 (talk) 00:49, 31 July 2022 (UTC)
- What "finally"? I just saw this. I did notice the details. Harambe died on 28 May, so of course that's directly relevant. George Floyd did not. That something related to his death happened on May 28 is not the point. If it were, we could add that same link on dozens and dozens of dates, since on many dates things happened related to his death. Drmies (talk) 01:52, 31 July 2022 (UTC)
- Finally someone replied and it happened to be you. That you just saw it doesn't change that I made my OP over a week ago.
- The entry I made clearly is not about George Floyd. It is clearly about the taking of the third precinct, which was a historic event nearly unprecedented in US history, which has its very own subsection under the date of May 28th in the broader article about the protests.
- This entry is not meaningfully different than the entry about Harambe's death. His death being in a subsection of the broader article about Harambe. The broader article that also has information about his birth and the songs his keeper liked.
- It's not meaningfully different from the Nepal entry I mentioned which has the relevant information in a table at the bottom of a giant page about a million other things.
- Even the next example above it "2004 – The Iraqi Governing Council chooses Ayad Allawi, a longtime anti-Saddam Hussein exile, as prime minister of Iraq's interim government." only mentions the date May 28th in a subsection of a broader article about Ayad Allawi.
- Are you going to argue that the Third precinct needs it's own dedicated page? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_Precinct_Police_Station
- I'm willing to believe there has been confusion about what the original entry was even about -- the taking and burning of an American police precinct by US citizens -- again an apparently unprecedented event in American history since at least the civil war. This entry is not about George Floyd or his murder.
- If this isn't the case than I can only say it feels like post-hoc pedantry to justify someone's flippant decision to reject the entry. 2600:1702:2EA0:27B0:FDC0:F11F:CE50:8D1C (talk) 02:31, 31 July 2022 (UTC)
- We can't verify that you made your OP over a week ago, because you're using an anonymous IP address. Get a user id, and you might be a little bit more believable.
- I'm now archiving this discussion. If you wish to post more, please do so on the talk page. Kiwipete (talk) 02:37, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

Count Me In (film) moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, Count Me In (film), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:

Hey Pete, You've been doing some great work on the DOY articles. I'm thinking your addition of the "notes" section may make sense (haven't really thought about it but I totally see where you're coming from and trying to do) but you should probably discuss it on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Days of the year or some other project page. Irvine and Mallory
Hi. I noticed your recent edit summary: "Irvine and Mallory both died on the same expedition on the same day." I'm pretty sure we don't know for certain the date on which either of them died or whether they both died on the same day. Maybe neither of them should be listed. Deb (talk) 08:27, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Deb, yes I did wonder myself. My rationale, if it can be called that, is that their entries were already there, both using the same citation, so I thought it would be tidier listing them together under the same heading, such as, for example, the Pearl Harbor deaths on December 7. Kiwipete (talk) 08:34, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Perhaps we could add a note saying "date disappeared"? Deb (talk) 08:35, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Answer!
You recently reverted my edit on 'September 3' saying every event should be on seperate line! But I had changed those which had occured in same year and I've seen many such articles when events occured in same year or date are written together? So which way is right? Faraz Sualeh (talk) 09:42, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- Please see WP:DOYSTYLE. As stated there, 'Multiple deaths caused by the same event (e.g. December 7, 1941) may be listed, indented with a ":*". Regards, Kiwipete (talk) 04:55, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

You reverted my edit at the Indian section of Extrajudicial killing because you wanted a source. I have now added a source. It is an improvement but not necessary because I gave a link to Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which gives plenty of sources. Otto (talk) 13:22, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
Why’d you remove my edit
Do you hate information? Napalm Guy (talk) 00:35, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi there, I presume you're referring to your addition of Blaž Kraljević to August 9. If so, you would see from my edit summary that new entries require an inline citation, as per WP:DOYCITE. I see further that you have again added this entry. This violates WP:BRD, where after you were Bold, and I Reverted your edit, the next step is for you to start a Discussion. I've once again reverted your edit. If you add it again, you will be at risk of edit warring. These are some of the numerous guidlelines that can help you be a useful contributor to Wikipedia. There seems to be a bug in the code for page previews currently. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module_talk:Coordinates#Protected_edit_request_on_29_May_2023 I think the best course of action would be just to wait it out until they fix it. Hi Kiwipete! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Hi. I added the sources when you reverted both of my edits. From this diff from October 11 article that use as a source a book written by Jorge Basadre, one of main Peruvian historians of his country and this one from 12 May article which has a journal published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru. So no, your statement that claims that I didn't use reliable sources in those edits is wrong. I updated José de La Mar article by adding those sources as showed here. For some reason the article had a wrong year of his birthday, but that error was fixed. --2x2leax (talk) 19:32, 13 May 2023 (UTC)
- Yep, in both diffs I used the wrong year La Mar was born, that's my fault, a reason why I fixed it in this and this diff until you reverted me. 2x2leax (talk) 19:42, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

- Thanks. That was no problem at all. I had thought you had reverted the change first due to WP:DOYCITE, but adding years of death without a citation is an acceptable practice. Great that you picked up on all the other changes, though :) Kiwipete (talk) 07:59, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

I am having a hard time understanding the requirements at WP:DAB. Specifically, there is an article Ilowiec which, I assume, is a disambiguation page as it contains links to articles about various towns in Poland. However, each of these articles just contains a "see also" hatnote. I believe they should contain a hatnote for "other places" to a page Iłowiec (disambiguation), which should then redirect to Iłowiec. Am I correct? If so, do I replace the existing contents of Iłowiec with the contents of Ilowiec, make Ilowiec a redirect to Iłowiec? Are there any other changes that I should make? Thanks, Kiwipete (talk) 08:20, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
- You are correct, other places would probably be better than see also in this instance, as it would link to the disambiguation page. If you want more help, change the help me-helped back into a help me, stop by the Teahouse, or Wikipedia's live help channel, or the help desk to ask someone for assistance. I'm not sure what the reference to WordPress is though, it was your edit on March 12 that I reverted :) In terms of what the requirements are, I should have highlighted WP:EVENTDOY, so, for example, if there were an article called Liberation of Karditsa then this event could be included. On editing January 30
Hello there, @Kiwipete. I really appreciate heartfully your hard work on editing the encyclopedia. Please keep doing this admirable job.
This time I want to discuss about the January 30 article. I added the speech, but purposely didn't add any citation as an article on WP already exists on that subject. So why it was necessary to undo the edition?
Thank you again for you help and effort! ERA (talk) 12:35, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Era, the requirement is quite clear at WP:DOYCITE that an inline citation has to be included with any new entry in these DOY articles. As stated there, " A blue link to a Wikipedia article is not sufficient". I hope that helps. Kiwipete (talk) 18:38, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, thank you for the help. Just another small question, why are many of the events don't have any incline citations? I mean, if that was the case then, every entry on DOY articles should have a citation next to the events, but why it isn't?
- Thanks again! ERA (talk) 19:51, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- You can see that there are active members in the WP:DOY project who are reviewing all existing DOY entries to find citations. Kiwipete (talk) 01:08, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
Preview using new Vector skin
This help request has been answered. If you need more help, you can , contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page, or consider visiting the Teahouse. |
I am using the new Vector skin. When I edit an article and then press the "Show preview" button, the Preview is displayed, but (a) all the Language links appear in the left-hand margin, per the old Vector skin, and (b) there is a large blank margin to the left of the Preview section. Please advise how can I report this defect. Thanks, Kiwipete (talk) 08:02, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- I'm going to leave this request open as someone with more technical knowledge may be able to answer you, but you may report issues with the skin by going to WP:VECTOR2022 and using its talk page. 331dot (talk) 08:14, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- I think the above is the best you're going to get from a help me request. If you want more help, change the help me-helped back into a help me, stop by the Teahouse, or Wikipedia's live help channel, or the help desk to ask someone for assistance. Editing Polish town/village articles
This help request has been answered. If you need more help, you can , contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page, or consider visiting the Teahouse. |
I am making edits to many Polish town/village articles so that they all have a map with location indicated, for example this edit]. At the moment, I am doing all this manually - I would like to know if there are any tools that would help me to make this a quicker process. Thanks, Kiwipete (talk) 07:00, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
- There are tools, such as AWB that can automate or semi-automate certain kinds of edits, but this, I suspect, may be beyond its capabilities. For better help on this, you might try asking at VPT or WT:WikiProject Maps. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 07:23, 27 December 2022 (UTC)

Game of the century, Bobby Fischer vs Donand Byrne
Hi, why did you cancel it from 17 october ? Ricercastorica (talk) 11:39, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
- Did you read my edit summary? "new entries require an inline citation, please see WP:DOYCITE". Kiwipete (talk) 07:13, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
- I did. You did cancel the sentence which includes the inline citation Ricercastorica (talk) 12:49, 14 December 2022 (UTC)
- This is the full text of your edit:
- *1956 – Game of the Century between Bobby Fischer and Donald Byrne
- An inline citation is typically one of the variations of the cite template, enclosed at the end of this text inside a pair of tags. There are plenty of examples of this on the page. Please familiarise yourself with them, and also read and understand WP:DOYCITE and WP:RS. Thanks, Kiwipete (talk) 06:43, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you. I am more familiar with chess than with inline citations, so if you wish to fix it, please feel free. Ricercastorica (talk) 15:37, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- I did. You did cancel the sentence which includes the inline citation Ricercastorica (talk) 12:49, 14 December 2022 (UTC)
Regarding the April 14 article
Why shouldn't births and deaths in the same year be grouped under sub-bullet points? That's how the year articles do it (see 1918#Births) and it looks good and works well. Kornatice (talk) 21:10, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Kornatice, I've never really looked at the year articles. For the DOY articles, there is WP:DOYSTYLE, including a reference to the template used for these articles. Cheers, Kiwipete (talk) 06:48, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
About editing on awarding date of the Nobel prizes 2022
Hi once again, Kiwipete! I recently added the awarding of all six Nobel prizes awarded to the recipients in 2022 on the pages of October 3,4,5,6,7,10. But on the page of oct 5, you removed the awarding and stated "while both the people and prize are notable, the awarding of the prize itself to them is not". Then, should the awarding of other pages be removed as well? (As an amateur contributor, I many a times struggle editing, apologies for any wrong edits). Thank you ❤️
ERA (talk) 15:02, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @ERA, I see that there are year-specific articles for Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Peace, and Economic Sciences, but not for Chemistry or Physics. I'm not sure why that is the case. Do you have any involvement in creating/maintaining these articles?
- The general guideline for putting entries into the Events section on DOY articles is that there must be a specific article about that event (please see WP:DOYSTYLE - "All events, births, deaths, and holidays should be linked to existing Wikipedia articles and those articles should mention the specific events"). In that regard, the entry on October 4 for the Physics prize should also probably be removed. I'm sorry not to be able to offer much more help here. Days of the Year Additions
Thank you for your feedback regarding several of my Days of the Year additions. As you can guess I am still learning much of Wikipedia as I try to update the Days of the Year entries to include active WTA tennis players with Wikipedia entries. I replied with my intention to fix the en dash problem, but as I'm unsure how talk pages and replies work, I'm posting here as well. It's annoying however because it's much faster to edit these using just the Visual editor, but I cannot seem to see any way to get the desired &nash; to appear there without directly copying an en dash from another entry. Using the insert feature results in the actual '–' and so does alt + 150. Please advise, if you can, on how to best insert – without using Source editing. Nevertheless, every single entry has been fixed with regards –.
You also mentioned that capitalisation should be by surname. This I missed because of inconsistent messaging at the bottom of the 'Births' section on each page. Some do not mention alphabetisation at all, and some omit the by last name section. Here I would suggest someone finds a message with all of the information and replaces the message in every entry with that information. In the meantime, I have edited the order of the entries I made where necessary with alphabetisation by surname. I did however think of a few scenarios in which more clarity might be appropriate: in the case of two persons born on the same day with the name surname (here I ordered by first name), or persons with names that don't follow the same order as English e.g., Chinese or Spanish (I went with what they were professional known as and took the surname therein), or finally persons who are known by a mononym (do you still order by their surname or by their mononym whether it's their first name or a pseudonym?).
Thanks for your help so far and I look forward to your response. Please also don't be afraid to shoot me a talk message regarding any changes you make to my submissions. I noticed you removed the entry for Mirjam Björklund from 29th of July page citing that the reference didn't actually contain her date of birth, though I didn't notice this until I reached that day in my &ndash edits. This is an unfortunate reality as the official WTA website is missing some key biographical information for younger players but will be updated in future. With this in mind, I edited the 29th of July and every other entry where the WTA website lacked their actual date of birth so that every time this happens there is also a citation to another source such as Eurosport, ESPN, Wimbledon, the US Open etc. that does contain their date of birth. The WTA links have been left in place, however, because this is the principal reference for professional tennis players, should be accurate in the near future, and adds to their veracity.
Thanks again for your help.

On editing June 13
Thank you very much for correcting me ❤️. I had an instinct that my last edit on June 13 (events : 1901-present) was going to be a bit overstated, but I did it anyways as the other wikipedia articles had that exact statement about the event. Thanks again :-) Anggona Era (talk) 09:27, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Edits to DOY articles
I am not using a bot but a AWB script. I was not even aware that that project existed. I think that the idea of using – instead of the html – is foolish and I note that the suggestion is not in MOS guideline. However I have no wish to annoy anyone or tread on anyone's perceived territory, so I will refrain from making such changes to days of the year articles. -- PBS (talk) 06:03, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
