Information icon Hi there! Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

I noticed your recent edit to India does not have an edit summary. Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. Thanks! Kautilya3 (talk) 13:59, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

Do you have a cite for the use of the name spacelift for this construct? I've heard the term spacelift used as a general term for anything that gets objects into orbit, but never applied specifically to a geosynch elevator. Regards, Tarl.Neustaedter (talk) 21:29, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Space lift redirects to Space elevator (since lift is another word for elevator). But maybe you're right. J 1982 (talk) 23:27, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Please use edit summaries!

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. When you make a change to an article, please provide an edit summary for your edits. Doing so helps everyone to understand the intention of your edit. It is also useful when reading the edit history of the page. Thank you. Chris (talk) 00:03, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

SN 2014J

You commented in Messier 82 "The supernova didn't explode in 2014". The change the article is fine (changing from 2014 supernova to 2014 supernova discovery), but your edit comment puzzles me - the earliest pre-discovery images found of the supernova were in mid January 2014. If it had exploded more than two weeks earlier, surely other images would have been found showing the brightening star. Do you have a reference suggesting earlier detection? 2016 Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Search Community Survey

The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has appointed a committee to lead the search for the foundation’s next Executive Director. One of our first tasks is to write the job description of the executive director position, and we are asking for input from the Wikimedia community. Please take a few minutes and complete this survey to help us better understand community and staff expectations for the Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director.

Categories

Hi. I see that you're creating genre-by-year categories and adding them to articles. Please see WT:FILM#User:Jim Michael. Inconsistent sortkey usage

Hi, your WP:SORTKEY edits ([1], [2], [3], etc.) are fine as long as they are applied similarly for each member of the categories your are changing (i.e. Category:Lists of exoplanets, Category:Stellar astronomy, and possibly others). Please apply the same change to the remainder pages in those categories.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  14:25, 12 June 2016 (UTC)

I fix articles I find and see something that needs to be fixed. I can't go through entire categories just because I fix one article. J 1982 (talk) 12:51, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Classifying Historical Events

Hi. I see that you're creating (renaming) all kind of Historical Events (so as Europe in Continental Europe, ect). Please see the Extraction of Historical Events from Wikipedia. Especially, Historical Events in Wikipedia and DBpedia. There is no alphabetic order for events and there is a consensus against this. These corrections are not excepted and will be nominated for deletion. Read the FAQ. Please discuss before you continue creating/adding them. Thanks. Peters01 (talk) 10:09, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

I had no idea, but those year-articles during the Middle Ages are a mess, first continent-wise, then topic-wise in the same article. Can't they just all be like later years? (only date-wise and unknown dates below) J 1982 (talk) 17:45, 4 July 2016 (UTC)
No problem, but I suggest you restore all you're corrections from 793 till 871. Also in which Continental Europe, preferring in Europe. Wikipedia organizes information about historical events in two different ways:
   (1) Descriptions, details, links and sub events are integrated in the article text for example "February 2 – The Franks led by emperor Louis II of Italy conquer Bari..." . This approach is common for all language versions, also if similar events may by differently labeled, have different URLs and content or maybe missing in some language versions depending on their importance.
   (2) Historical events are also organized in a system of time units (i.e. years) and in a combination of topics and years (i.e. 871 in literature). The time units system is available in all language versions, the combination of topics and year only in the English version. Applied time units are millennia, centuries, decades, years, months and days. There exist also a series of articles for the combination of topic and time. Categories are for example: Arts, Literature, Politics, Science, ect.

So far, in our own approach we rely on existing structures in Wikipedia. Wikipedia collect historical events of different granularity in lists for centuries, years, months and on a daily basis. These lists are user-maintained with a high actuality and correctness, so that events of yesterday are already available with links to other Wikipedia articles. We have parsed and processed historical events on a yearly basis for different language versions and make them available by a WEB API, a SPARQL endpoint and a Linked Data Interface. I appreciate your editing on the English Wikipedia, you're doing a Good Job! Thanks. Peters01 (talk) 22:10, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

Cyborg the Wikipedian: unnecessry edit revokation on an article

Hello J 1982, I am Cyborg the Wikipedian. I am here because you revoked my edit on the Common year starting on Thursday article. I know why you undid my edit (2015 is over). Not to be rude or to start an argument, but you undoing my edit was not necessary, I was just stating that 2015 was the most recent common year that started on Thursday. —Preceding undated comment added 19:22, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

Question

Can I just ask why you removed the stub class tags on Stora Karlsö Lighthouse? The article has only 554 characters (98 words) "readable prose size", which is well below the normal 1500 characters usually required for a start article. Granted, in has a lot of info, but most of that is in the infobox and it's just list-data. w.carter-Talk 10:07, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

I thought it was OK and well-written with no need for stub. J 1982 (talk) 10:11, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
Well, thanks for that, but I'll have to disagree with you about a lot of the destubing you are doing at the moment. Although the guidelines don't specify the exact length for an article, they do say that only the length of the prose text is to be considered, not the lists, infoboxes and such. Most of these articles have only a few sentences of that. A start article should preferably also have refs, which some of the articles lack. But if you are set on not calling them stubs, you must also alter the class of the article on its talk page. Simply removing the stub-tag is not enough. This will also alert the different projects the article belongs to of the change. You might want to install the User:Shubinator/DYKcheck which is a very good tool to see if an article is ok for start class or not. Best, w.carter-Talk 10:26, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
I thought it seemed stubs were outdated, by maybe not. J 1982 (talk) 11:20, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Kosovo category recently added

Hello J 1982. I appreciate your recent addition to Kosovo[4]. I'm not sure however that this is an appropriate category for the Kosovo article, mainly because it is a circular puzzle piece. The article is comprehensive and therefore is more than only the post-2008 proclaimed state and equally about its previous entities. As such, Kosovo cannot be a 2008 establishment in Kosovo because Kosovo had to exist in the first place. It is the proclaimed state that was established in 2008 over what was an existing territory named Kosovo (circular issue). You may want to replace it with a simple "states established in 2008" category if there is one, but then that too may look to breach WP:NPOV since it is tilted towards one of two fiercely opposing viewpoints. --OJ (talk) 15:11, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

I think it's the current Republic of Kosovo (since a lot of other countries had similair categorization), but remove if you want or move to 2008 esablishments in Europe. J 1982 (talk) 15:14, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

Pre-1950s sci fi films

Hello, I came back to "dig in" and you saved me lots of work, thanks and a sci-fi greeting. It was interesting that no categories were created for pre-1930s sci-fi films, so I put up the 1920s and 1910s yesterday, and just saw you did the rest and then emptied the pre-1950s bin I was working on emptying. Category: Maritime science fiction films

You might have to protect the category: Maritime science fiction films you placed on a number of articles because there's a trouble making user known as "Gothicfilm" who does not like subgenres and attempted to remove categories in the past such as the one on The Last Starfighter. I have been trying to protect a number of pages from this editors vandlisms, but I am not available to do so on a daily basis. You might want to keep those article on your watchlist before she/he removes them. Thanks.--Taeyebar 23:27, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

Try to populate the list an categories with as many links and articles as possibles. J 1982 (talk) 08:06, 30 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi, J, I noticed this edit where you added a pipe to a category. Would you mind enlightening me what this does? Is it relevant that the category and article have the same name? Does it have something to do with alphabetic sorting? Thanks.  —jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 06:36, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

It sorts the article before all letters in the category, instead as under P. J 1982 (talk) 10:17, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Maritime science fiction pages and auto archiving

Hi J 1882, I was in talks with fixature on drafting the maritime science fiction articles. I have sent him one of the deleted pages on email and fixature said he knows how to create drafts. Once he does that, it'll be open for everyone to contribute to before publishing again.

Also I added auto archiving to your talk page if you don't mind. It'll make it easier for you and you don't have to worry about archiving messages again. State

Whilst I do not object to your removal of "state" here as your edit helps improve the flow of the sentence, nowhere did it say "independent state" and not all states are independent. Northern Ireland from 1921 to 1972 was virtually a state within the UK, and was often referred to as such in that period as a state. It had its own upper and lower house of parliament, prime minister, Lord Chief Justice and governmental departments. Mabuska (talk) 21:29, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Yes, it's more like a federated state (if the local parliament can introduce local laws). J 1982 (talk) 22:32, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Bernadotte

I have created a short article about Gunnila Bernadotte. It was redirected without much discussion I have contested that. It was redirected on the basis that "why was this created after her death". Your added categories for Gaia (spacecraft)

Hi, do you think those categories are really right? It is a spacecraft orbiting the sun. It was briefly in French Guiana for the launch, apart from that is has no relation to French Guiana. And it is certainly not a "2013 establishment[] in South America": "Organizations, places, awards and competitions founded or established in South America in the year 2013" (category description). Gaia is none of those. Also note that the spacecraft is the only object in the two categories. No other spacecraft launched there was categorized in a similar way. --mfb (talk) 22:01, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Month/year categories

Hello - I noticed that you are working on some of the same things as I am these days, namely creating categories for events by month/year. If there is anything I can be of assistance with, please let me know. FYI, I made a sandbox page with all the month/year combinations from 1800 though 2020. Out of curiosity, how far in the past were you planning on going? Keep up the good work. KConWiki (talk) 21:31, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

There's one thing I miss. If I'm in 1992, there should be arrows pointing at December 1991 and January 1993. J 1982 (talk) 21:38, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
I'm afraid that I'm not familiar with the markup to make that happen; I'm sure that sooner or later someone will come along who is familiar with it. KConWiki (talk) 03:53, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi

Could you please take a look on the article about Bahar Pars. One editor claims to know the actress and that she wants the birthdata removed. Now only the year is standing even though full birthdata is available. And we do not even know if the editor in question knows Pars for real. I agreed with the year of birth solution to keep the calm, as the editor in question that wants the information deleted is abusive. I just wanted a second opinion on this. God jul! --BabbaQ (talk) 16:08, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Destubbing

Hi there!

I happened upon some of your edits and noticed that you removed stub tags from extremely short articles in several instances—for example, here (20-word article) and here (66-word article). Would you please help me understand your reasoning?

Thanks, -- Black Falcon (talk) 07:49, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

I seems stubs have played out their role. The idea of Wikipedia is that any article can be expanded. J 1982 (talk) 11:17, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
I can see your perspective, and I agree that "any article can be expanded". I am not sure, however, whether stubs have "played out their role". Wikipedia:Stub remains a guideline, there is a fairly active WikiProject working on stubs, and Category:All stub articles currently contains more than 2 million pages. At the least, any decision to deprecate stubs needs to be based on a wider consensus, not just applied to articles individually. -- Black Falcon (talk) 18:45, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

STS categories

Hi. Just a small question: this adds a category "in California", but as far as I can tell it launched and landed in Florida, so i'm not sure how California is involved (other than one minor mention in the prose). And similarly, you remove "year in spaceflight" categories from STS-7 and STS-41-G, which makes little sense to me... Can you please explain ? —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:26, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Confused with those landing in California. And "spacecraft launched in X-year" and "spacecraft which reentered in y-year" are both already linked to "x-year in spaceflight". J 1982 (talk) 21:48, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Category:suggestion

Hello J 1982! I have seen your categories "Category: December 1768", and similar. I admire your effort to categorize according to time, which is important for the historically interested. However, I would like to make a suggestion: when a category is so small as "December 1768" it also become less accessible. Users may search for, example "Category: 18th-century Sweden", but fwer users will go on and check "Category: 1760s in Sweden". Even fewer will check "Category: 1768 in Sweden", and almost no one will open "Category: December 1768 in Sweden" (I am not saying that you have created these particular categories, I am making examples). You can easily verify this by looking at the number of watchers in the viewing history of such categories. The articles also become fewer and fewer the smaller the category. A category like "Category: 1745 in Sweden", for example, may never have more than two articles. It is ambitious to create and use such categories, but they may actually make the subject much less easy to find, as so few people use them. I would therefore suggest, that one avoid such small categories, to avoid the articles in them to become completely forgotten. I hope you do not take offence, but this category-problem is somethin I have noticed since long back. My best wishes, --Aciram (talk) 14:59, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Red-linked categories

Hello. Per WP:REDNOT you shouldn't add red-linked categories as you did eg here. Categories are not the same as articles, one doesn't add red-linked ones in the hope that they will be created at some point in the future. And in that particularly case, a bit of a look at the hierarchy would show that other cats don't have the equivalents of the ones you were trying to add.Le Deluge (talk) 15:33, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi

User:Cyberpower678/IABot Management Interface/JSON to translate is where I placed the language file for the en language. If you and maybe some of your friends could translate this, I would greatly appreciate it. It's quite simple. Don't touch the keys, left-hand side, and only translate the values, right hand side. If you bork the JSON syntax somehow, it will not let you save so, it should be easy to spot what was borked.

Hi J 1982, the drafts Draft: Maritime science fiction and Draft: List of maritime science fiction works has been restored per community consensus. I have added a few reliable sources and re-organized old ones accordingly. It's no hurry now, but when you have time, can you please review them? There is one new book in which the author calls maritime science fiction the seventh subgenre of science fiction, but I can't find it on google books as it's unpublished I think [6]. Just look out for the book. We need to find the chapter to use as a source when it's published. But for now, just review the current sources I recently added and see if it can be formatted better. No hurry. Take your time.

I will also sort out your archiving for you, so no worry there.--Taeyebar 00:04, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

Currency by year

I did not use the plural because I felt that if it said "currencies" that would only apply to an entire currecy, ergo, the US dollar or euro. West German football categories

What was the purpose of creating all these new categories related to West German football? The existing season categories with "Germany" in the name referred to West Germany. I don't see a need for all these new categories, if the issue was the name they could have been moved. S.A. Julio (talk) 21:05, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

West Germany shall not be refered to as Germany after the Second World War until 1990. If they refer to West Germany (especially because there was an all-German Olympic team between 1952-1964), they should be renamed to avoid confusion. However, it seems we have categories for years in Germany, with East Germany and West Germany as subcategories. J 1982 (talk) 21:19, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

Culture, sensu lato

Many thanks for your categorisation work, a truly Sisyphean task if ever I saw one. I would just like to note that Living things in culture (and all its child articles) treat culture in the broad sense used by sociologists and biologists to mean 'everything transmitted culturallly, other than by genetics', in other words including things like engineering and agriculture, not just 'high art'. I suspect this may powerfully affect the categorisations as many more articles ought to be included, and the parent categories ought to include more than just arty things. Hello, J 1982.

As one of Wikipedia's most experienced Wikipedia editors,
Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Surte BK, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sure (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Category:Shipping companies established in 1998

Hey, I've noticed you started Category:Shipping companies established in 1998. Are you planning to expand the category or is this a failed attempt? Marcocapelle (talk) 22:37, 4 February 2018 (UTC)

I added popcat, so it could expand. Just like we have airlines and railway companies. J 1982 (talk) 22:43, 4 February 2018 (UTC)
This is a matter of chicken and eggs. If you don't populate it as good as you can, nobody else will, because nobody else will know that the category exists when it's so poorly populated. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:08, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
Here is another example: Category:Roman Catholic churches by year of completion. Nobody is going to expand this if you don't make a decent effort yourself first. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:52, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Era style changes (BC/AD vs. BCE/CE)

One of your recent edits was in violation of WP:ERA and has been reverted. Prevailing era designations are not errors to be corrected, and changing them is not a matter of personal preference. Per WP:ERA, consensus is needed before changing the era style established in an article. Please refrain from making any more such edits without first obtaining consensus for the change. Thank you. Death of Silje Redergård

Hi, at this edit, you revised the number of boys involved from two to three. This is fine if it is more accurate, but you didn't also change the article where it says "The boys, aged five and six", so the article now contradicts itself. What should it say? Ascension cats

I noticed cat Ascension Thursday songs, think that Thursday is fairly unimportant, - we don't say Easter Sunday songs. Also I think we should perhaps just say Category:Music for Ascension, and have several cantatas at least. See also. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:23, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

But we have Easter songs. I added Thursday to make clear it's the Ascension of Jesus holiday in May. Some Christians also celebrate the ascension of Mary in August, but those songs should have their own category. J 1982 (talk) 16:06, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Notice

The article Akalla BP has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

As stated in WP:NGEO notability is not inherited. Being the former ground of Akropolis IF is not a valid notability claim because of that.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. When you translate from Swedish please don't leave Swedish words in the text, such as the one I fixed here. There are plenty of applications out there, such as Grammarly, that you can run the text through before publishing live, and which will spot such errors. Notice

The article Super Troupers has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Lack of notability

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. VG cover captions

I reverted your edit and wanted to leave an edit summary but accidentally smacked the Numpad Enter key with the side of my palm. WP:VGBOX asks us to avoid self-evident captions like "Cover" because a cover or logo being used is expected. Specifically, it says:

While {{infobox video game}} offers a |caption= option to caption the cover image, use it if only necessary. The fact that the cover image is being used in the infobox establishes that it is cover art, so it is unnecessary to state this (do not use "Cover art for the game").

Hence the revert. Regards, IceWelder [] 19:46, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
