Question from Sanescious (20:32, 5 March 2024)
[edit]Hello I would like to know on how can i add my details as an artist, producer, beat maker and rapper --Sanescious (talk) 20:32, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Sanescious: Wikipedia strongly discourages making an article for yourself, but you still are allowed to provided you follow the conflict of interest guidelines. If you are already notable, it is likely you already have an article. Before doing anything, I would check to see if you meet notability guidlines, particularly WP:NSINGER, before doing anything. Question from Haspsyokes (11:03, 6 March 2024)
[edit]hello, do you know why is it that wikipedia marks words like "honoured" and "sulphur" as incorrect grammer(might be wrong term, I mean the red line underneath the word), and should I replace it with the other spelling of the word? (eg: honored, sulfur) --Haspsyokes (talk) 11:03, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Haspsyokes: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! 'Honoured' and 'sulphur' are the correct spellings for British or Australian English, whereas 'honored' and 'sulfur' are the correct spellings for American English. I'm assuming your browser or device is set to British English for some reason. JML1148 (talk | contribs) 08:09, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Irma Fritz (20:00, 7 March 2024)
[edit]Hello James! Good to meet you! I'm a fiction writer. Aside from English, I read/write German. I'd like to get started on Wikipedia, perhaps by creating my own Wiki page. --Irma Fritz (talk) 20:00, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Irma Fritz: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm just going to partially copy advice I've already given to editors in the same boat as you, I hope you don't mind. Wikipedia strongly discourages making an article for yourself, but you still are allowed to provided you follow the conflict of interest guidelines. Please make sure you are notable first, otherwise it is almost certain your article will be deleted. I would check notability guidelines, particularly WP:NAUTHOR, before doing anything. Stadio Olimpico
[edit]Thanks, I wish for it to become a good article but I am aware that the article needs editing by a native speaker who well knows English. -- Blackcat 19:21, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Blackcat: No worries! Just so you know, I probably won't have much time to copyedit the article today, but I'll get to it tomorrow. JML1148 (talk | contribs) 21:14, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- Ok. Just a thing, in the lead you asked whether 90,000 were the highest attendance for a concert at all, or only for the Olimpico. Of course it's the Olimpico only (Paul McCartney made > 200,000 in Rio de Janeiro in 1990...). I guess I explained it later in the article. -- Blackcat 21:22, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Blackcat: Another thing, in the 'Stadio dei Centomila' section, the sentence
CONI chairman Giulio Onesti announced that renewal works would finish in 1950
is used, but there doesn't seem to be any other information before it about a renewal project. Am I missing something, or is there missing context? JML1148 (talk | contribs) 09:05, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

- Onesti was appointed chairman of CONI and his first task was the renewal of the venue. According to Piero Ostilio Rossi (Rossi, PO; Gatti, I. (1991) Roma. Guida all'architettura moderna 1909-1991, pp 351-52), the project was presented in 1949 by Vitellozzi and Roccatelli, and realized between 1951-53 by Vitellozzi, Valle and Pintonello because Roccatelli died in 1951 before the work started. -- Blackcat 20:52, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
PS BTW of this: Consiglio superiore dei Lavori Pubblici (Superior Council of Public Works) is a government agency which board is composed by architects, engineers and lawyers which is charged to supersede to tenders for public works. Now it happens rarely if never at all, but in the past its members also used to take part to the projects of State-owned buildings.

Your close
[edit]Thanks your for your considered close. Per your comments re: AN/I I did take action towards the end of the RfC at AE that resulted in a topic ban from two subjects for the editor you named. I should have handled myself better during the whole episode and I got a warning for my behaviour also. TarnishedPathtalk 10:23, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- @TarnishedPath: Thank you for the heads up regarding the AN thread. I didn't realise that Mkstokes received a topic ban or that the thread existed. JML1148 (talk | contribs) 06:39, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
Engagement in WP:GRAVEDANCING and WP:NPA
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Nick McKenzie talk page]. The basis of this is the idea that the blocked/banned/retired editor owns the content they created, and that this content was invalidated at the same time they were blocked, banned or decided to retire. This is incorrect, since the editor may originally have meant very well, and done good work, before they eventually flamed out. This also seems like a personal attack in violation of WP:NPA. I'll note that while Mkstokes currently has a topic ban, he is not banned from responding to your accusations, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:MaskedSinger/Archive_2
EXAMPLES OF GRAVEDANCING
Examples of gravedancing may include:
* Insults/accusations/other behavior directed at editors who are now blocked or banned. This is motivated by the idea that the editor in question won't be able to respond to the comment. This is wrong even if the editor in question never sees it because it contributes to a negative environment that is less likely to encourage editors to work together.
* Behaving as though a consensus is no longer valid simply because a blocked or banned editor contributed to it. Whilst consensus can change, the simple act of blocking does not change it - if you wish to overturn the previous consensus then further input should be sought.
Despite claiming "There is consensus to remove the disputed content," it is clear none was achieved to remove said content. If it had been obtained, there would be no concern that "This is going to be a controversial closure, given the numerical majority against removing the content." Mkstokes (talk) 15:53, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Mkstokes: When I made the close at Nick McKenzie, I did not know of the WP:AN thread that existed, nor your topic ban. Neither of those things factored into my close as a result. If I have caused hurt, I apologise, but I don't think it qualifies as gravedancing because I did not know of your topic ban, and you are still able to respond to my comments. I also don't believe I did either of the examples of gravedancing that you have mentioned.
- I do have more of an issue with the final part of your comment, though. RfCs and other discussions aren't closed based off of a simple vote tally. Instead, we work based on consensus. Per WP:DETCON, consensus
is ascertained by the quality of the arguments given on the various sides of an issue, as viewed through the lens of Wikipedia policy.
This means that closes may be made even if the numerical majority is against, if the quality of arguments on the minority are much stronger than the majority, which was the case in this discussion. I explained this in my closure note. The reason I left the comment about it being a controversial close is because closes against the numerical majority can obviously look unfair, particularly if you are involved and have a strong viewpoint. JML1148 (talk | contribs) 06:53, 12 March 2024 (UTC)- Then you didn't do proper research before closing the item. There was no hurt caused as I am now fully aware of the way Wikipedia skews it's policies and guidelines to fit a leftist viewpoint. However, the apology is greatly appreciated. No one seems to take policies regarding public figures seriously on Biographies of living persons. As the dispute was thoroughly handled via the dispute process, there was no need to add your personal admonitions to the editors involved and to single me out for personal insult. As an experienced editor, you knew that any personal attack would come back to me when you tagged me, so the intent is clear. As you didn't know I was under a topic ban, I retract my warning and this can be either closed or deleted. Your prerogative. Mkstokes (talk) 08:43, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Mkstokes: I've struck your comment, which is standard procedure for retracted statements. Since you seem reluctant to communicate any further, I will not respond to other parts of your comment. JML1148 (talk | contribs) 08:49, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
- It's not that I'm reluctant to communicate with you. Rather, there are specific editors waiting for any opportunity to impose additional sanctions on me. Therefore I have to be very careful not to give them any cogent reason to do so via my Wikipedia contributions. You're welcome to email me if you want further discussion. Mkstokes (talk) 11:27, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Mkstokes, the edit at Special:Diff/1213191446 in which you mention an article from which you are topic banned is a violation of your topic ban. Further this edit at Special:Diff/1213316863 in which you criticise an editor's close of an RfC about a subject which you are topic banned from is a violation of your topic ban. @Ivanvector, for your attention. TarnishedPathtalk 23:49, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
- @TarnishedPath, as you'll notice, the editor specifically tagged me in his closure while additionally insulting me. As @Ivanvector previously mentioned, "Mkstokes is banned from commenting on this topic; they're not banned from responding to...accusations." I accused @JML1148 of grave dancing and violating the no personal attacks policy on two points:
- 1. Insults/accusations/other behavior
- 2. Behaving as though a consensus is no longer valid
- This issue has been cleared up, apologies and appreciations have been exchanged, I admitted my mistake, and the issue has been put to rest. You have been warned by the administrator that "A topic ban is not an invitation for you to follow the sanctioned user around and point out every mistake they make." This additional accusation as well as your comments on the talk page of the Fani Willis BLP are a clear indication that you either don't understand or don't care about the policies related to hounding. Ivanvector warned you, "...please don't harass editors even if they are sanctioned, unless you want to see your names beside logged interaction bans at WP:AELOG." I'm graciously willing to give you one last chance to drop your all consuming desire to get me. However, if Ivanvector wishes to submit you for addition to the Arbitration enforcement log, I will fully support his actions. I have full confidence that he will make the correct decision. Mkstokes (talk) 01:26, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Mkstokes, I'm clearly not following you around as evidenced by the thread above which I'd come back to see a response to. I suggest you strike your ridiculous statements. TarnishedPathtalk 03:17, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
- As per your aspersions about hounding, participation in a single RfC does not constitute anything approaching that. Notably, as soon as I participated in that RfC you replied to my !vote immediately and then badgered me for a while. By your definition is that hounding? If you think I have a case to answer I invite you to take it to WP:AN/I. TarnishedPathtalk 03:26, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Mkstokes: I've struck your comment, which is standard procedure for retracted statements. Since you seem reluctant to communicate any further, I will not respond to other parts of your comment. JML1148 (talk | contribs) 08:49, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I
[edit]Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:
- Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
- Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
- Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
- Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
- Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
- Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
- Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
- Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
- Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
- Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
- Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
- Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
- Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
- Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
- Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
- Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
- Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.
To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024
[edit]Hello JML1148,
Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

[edit]Hey sorry to bother you. How do i add a source for information that’s relatively new so the new information dosent get removed? --LoLIamHappy (talk) 12:06, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
- @LoLIamHappy: I'm assuming you already have a source - if you don't, you cannot add the content, as almost all statements on Wikipedia require a source. Have a look at Help:Introduction to referencing with VisualEditor if you're using visual editor, or Help:Referencing for beginners if you're using source editor. - voorts (submissions) with 530 points, mostly from two FAs (Well he would, wouldn't he? and Cora Agnes Benneson) and three GAs;
- Generalissima (submissions) with 523 points, mostly from 11 GAs about coinage and history;

Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.
If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please read Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Question from GrayWhiteSaint (12:20, 20 April 2024)
[edit]Hello, I want to edit an entry written about this subject that had already been attempted to be made as an article by another user, but that was reject. Reason being for lack of sources and I would like to make an edit of the entry but having trouble in finding resources for the subject matter. Can you assist me in giving me tips in how to find sources for the subject matter? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Peach_and_Goma is the entry in question, and thank you --GrayWhiteSaint (talk) 12:20, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- @GrayWhiteSaint: Honestly, I doubt something like this will be considered notable, mostly because there's likely a lack of sources for it. Searching for Chinese-language news articles is probably your best bet. When reviewing sources, make sure that they meet WP:SIGCOV, particularly the 'reliable sources that are independent of the subject' part. JML1148 (talk | contribs) 06:52, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- I understand, and that does sound like a great start in trying to find sources. Regardless thank you for your reply and help! GrayWhiteSaint (talk) 18:47, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter
[edit]The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.
The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:
- Sammi Brie (submissions) with 707 points, mostly from 45 good article nomination reviews and 12 good articless about radio and television;
- Generalissima (submissions) with 600 points, mostly from 12 good articles and 12 did you know nominations about coinage and history;
- SounderBruce (submissions) with 552 points, mostly from a featured article about the 2020 Seattle Sounders FC season, three featured lists, and two good articles;
- BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 548 points, mostly from a featured article about the snooker player John Pulman, two featured lists, and one good article;
- voorts (submissions) with 530 points, mostly from two featured articles (Well he would, wouldn't he? and Cora Agnes Benneson) and three good articles.
The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Administrators' newsletter – May 2024
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2024).
- Phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship review has concluded. Several proposals have passed outright and will proceed to implementation, including creating a discussion-only period (3b) and administrator elections (13) on a trial basis. Other successful proposals, such as creating a reminder of civility norms (2), will undergo further refinement in Phase II. Proposals passed on a trial basis will be discussed in Phase II, after their trials conclude. Further details on specific proposals can be found in the full report.
- Partial action blocks are now in effect on the English Wikipedia. This means that administrators have the ability to restrict users from certain actions, including uploading files, moving pages and files, creating new pages, and sending thanks. T280531
- The arbitration case Conflict of interest management has been closed.
- This may be a good time to reach out to potential nominees to ask if they would consider an RfA.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2024 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles in the new pages feed. Currently, there is a backlog of over 15,000 articles awaiting review. Sign up here to participate!
- Voting for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election is open until 9 May 2024. Read the voting page on Meta-Wiki and cast your vote here!

RFA2024 update: phase I concluded, phase II begins
[edit]Hi there! Phase I of the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review has concluded, with several impactful changes gaining community consensus and proceeding to various stages of implementation. Some proposals will be implemented in full outright; others will be discussed at phase II before being implemented; and still others will proceed on a trial basis before being brought to phase II. The following proposals have gained consensus:
- Proposals 2 and 9b (phase II discussion): Add a reminder of civility norms at RfA and Require links for claims of specific policy violations
- Proposal 3b (in trial): Make the first two days discussion-only
- Proposal 13 (in trial): Admin elections
- Proposal 14 (implemented): Suffrage requirements
- Proposals 16 and 16c (phase II discussion): Allow the community to initiate recall RfAs and Community recall process based on dewiki
- Proposal 17 (phase II discussion): Have named Admins/crats to monitor infractions
- Proposal 24 (phase II discussion): Provide better mentoring for becoming an admin and the RfA process
- Proposal 25 (implemented): Require nominees to be extended confirmed
See the project page for a full list of proposals and their outcomes. A huge thank-you to everyone who has participated so far :) looking forward to seeing lots of hard work become a reality in phase II. theleekycauldron (talk), via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:09, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
Hello James, It is good coming in contact with you online. I would like to understand few things here, please:
1. By Wikipedia definition, or main idea of this Wikipedia program, what is the meaning of editing?
2. If editing by overall definition which means to improve or correct an article or information is considered as the main idea here do you have a team or system to detect people who are editing on Wikipedia on a daily basis as to whether the information they are using as an edit is correct or not?
3. Do people get paid for editing or posting new article or so? --Dgbarsue (talk) 00:34, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Dgbarsue: Hello, thank you for your questions. The first question is quite vague and one I can't really answer, but I can certainly your last two questions. Wikipedia cannot really ensure that everything in an article is correct, as no one has the time nor want to dig through every single edit and work out whether the added content is true. However, edits without a citation, which most intentionally misleading edits are, are usually removed by anti-vandalism patrollers. Finally, the answer to your last question is, unfortunately, yes. Wikipedia's policy on paid editing is that people can edit provided they disclose who are paying them. Most of the time, these paid articles are either poorly written or don't pass the basic notability guideline, so they are deleted fairly quickly. Despite all of the warnings not to, paid editors are an unfortunately common occurrence. JML1148 (talk | contribs) 11:42, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
