Is "Wifi calling" really distinct?
[edit]The header contains "Not to be confused with Wifi calling, a technology with similar naming but different use case.", but the link redirects back to this page. So, is it really a distinct thing? Lê Duy Quang (Make some words | Contributions) at 4h19:32 | 21/3/2023 (UTC) 04:19, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
- I agree that this article might be misleading. What this article is discussing is generic Voice over IP, using a Wi-Fi network for access. It should be part of Voice over IP, if anything.
- The term “Voice over Wi-Fi”, or “Wi-Fi calling”, is used in the telecommunications industry to mean something very different: the use of an untrusted IP network to access a mobile Core (EPC) and IMS platform for voice services. It is closely related to Voice over LTE. Pjcrabbit (talk) 22:20, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- It's true that, technically, they are not identical, but the first source/reference in this article is "VoWifi (Voice over Wi-Fi)"! Eritr (talk) 08:27, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- VoWiFi and WiFi Calling are used interchangably. See this "WiFi Calling (also called Voice over WiFi or VoWiFi)", and this, and also Sony also say it is the same thing. Either way this article shouldn't exist especially in its current poor unreferenced state. It's most sensible that it gets redirected to Wi-Fi calling. Privateeih (talk) 18:16, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

Merge
[edit]I do now strongly support merging this into Wi-Fi calling based on what I said above. This article in its current state is unacceptable and pointless to begin with. --Privateeih (talk) 03:22, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- I support this proposal Eritr (talk) 16:31, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

- I support the proposal to merge Voice over WLAN into Wifi calling ~Kvng (talk) 15:07, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
- I think it's right to merge. But let me notify the previous people too. User:Leduyquang03 User:Pjcrabbit User:Eritr User:Privateeih --Tonycosby (talk) 21:29, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
Does it use a server?
[edit]In the whole Internet is said how Wi-Fi is great for VoWLAN but isn't mentioned whether it is a point-to-point technology or it phones home and uses a third party server (if yes, then whom belongs this server?) 91.67.77.187 (talk) 17:04, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
Move discussion in progress
[edit]There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Generic Access Network which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 19:02, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
