The Republic Of Macedonia
Dear Mr. Delanoy,
The Sun of Vergina symbol flag and the use of 'Republic of Macedonia' instead of 'Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia' on the articles on wikipedia constitute vandalism. Please respect my country's history at least until the name and flag symbol's issue is resolved and do not undermine our efforts as a country.
Once again, I urge you to show more respect.
Kind Regards Antonios Chatzidakis —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.25.200.186 (talk • contribs) 16:39, December 1, 2008 (edit)
- I am not, and Wikipedia is not, disrespecting your country's (which I assume is Greece) history. In return, you will not use Wikipedia as a battleground. The country in question refers to itself as the Republic of Macedonia, so we (Wikipedia) refer to it as the Republic of Macedonia. Fight your retarded name battles elsewhere, changing Wikipedia will not change anyone's mind.
- I, as an American, do not care what it is called, and I do not understand how you all over in the Balkan Peninsula cannot simply agree to disagree, or at least fight your battle in a forum where you have even the tiniest chance of changing something. Jesus Christ! That battle has been going on ever since Alexander the Great started out on his career of conquest almost 2500 years ago. Do you really think changing Wikipedia's articles will affect anything? If you have a problem with it, go to the articles' talk pages and ask first. Or, just fix some typos, write/expand an article, or revert real vandalism. Don't you people have anything better to do than fight? J.delanoygabsadds 16:52, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- If you want to discuss changing the name, there's an ongoing discussion about what to call the article here. – iridescent 16:59, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Us people have better things to do but unfortunately we are not more than 15 million globally and certainly not 350 million. You cannot violate or change history and facts, simple as that. It is not like you want your mother to buy you a chocolate, she denies and then you cry. Would you have liked for example Mexico changing its name to Republic of Texas -no offence-? Pls, I urge you to think because unfortunately US is not in Europe to rethink some issues and behaviours.
Many Thanks Antonios
- (not 100% sure what you just said there...)If Mexico wanted to change their name to anything (other than "The United States of America") I would not care. None of the states in the USA calls themselves "Republic of" anything, and I cannot imagine any Texan caring in the least if another country decided to use a name that their state used more than 150 years ago.
- I also have little interest in carrying on a philosophical argument about something that neither of us is likely to ever have the least bit of an impact on. Just please don't go around changing "Republic of Macedonia" to "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" before an agreement is reached on the page Iridescent linked to above. - The District of Columbia seem to get on fine with the fact that there's a Columbia. So does Georgia. And Brittany. And Paris, Texas, come to that. – iridescent 19:27, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeap but there's a reason for that my friend. All the people who are living in the States they were not local inhabitants of the USA before 1776 but they were coming from Europe, Africa, Asia etc. So they wanted to pay a tribute; but in this case your above examples do not stand and the reasons are more than obvious. If you do not know, please read something else than Wikipedia. Because Wikipedia is not an academic source and hopefully will never be.
Antonios
Guess you are right, the part blithering idiots was absolutely perfect and it needs to be reversed -afghanistan, vietnam, iraq, oil- all the blithering idiotic range rovers without oil! Sounds perfect! Have a nice day and enjoy your Paris, I went to the original last month! Bye Bye
- Perhaps if the Parthenon were a pile of white dust under a cloud of smoke from your country's largest city after a terrorist attack, you would feel differently about Afghanistan. But I may be wrong. You will likely be too busy changing Wikipedia's articles about the Republic of Macedonia to notice. J.delanoygabsadds 19:48, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

- O_O Most Native Americans are dead? Really? Wow, I guess I'd better toss out that data from the 2000 United States Census, because it says that in the US alone, there were 2.5 million living Native Americans. Isn't it sad how much effort the US puts into censoring?
- Also, since you do not deny you are in Great Britain (really, how could you?), I must say I am surprised at your lack of patriotism. You pick away at a matter separated from you geographically by more than 1500 miles, while right on your very doorstep stands a gross historical outrage. Since you obviously know history so well (as all British do British TPS's, please read disclaimer at end of this post before picking up your stones...), how can you abide that disgustingly inaccurate portrayal of the event marring the gleaming halls of that Alpha and Omega, that repository of absolute truth that never deviates from the right? Even I, an uncouth, uneducated American, know that picture is a fake. If you are in any way representative of Britons in generalDisclaimer, disclaimer..., how can you say that the British are "great" if they allow such outrageous nonsense to stay on unchallenged while attacking another issue thousands of miles away in a *gasp* different country? - Right, wrong, left, right, up, down, light, dark - I don't care. I don't imagine that >0.0000001% of the English Wikipedia's readers and contributors care. And Wikipedia does not care what the UN classifies that country as. I have not read the reams of material over at that one page surrounding the naming controversy, nor do I intend to. All I know is, apparantly (based on the fact that "FYROM" is virtually nonexistant on Wikipedia), the consensus is that the country should be referred to as the Republic of Macedonia. I am throughly sick of this nonsense. You have proven my first comment to be correct thousands of times over. If any sane editor on Macedonia-related topics will only give me their address, I will take you out for a drink no matter where in the world you live.
- You are correct on one thing, that this conversation is leading no where. And it cannot lead anywhere because decisions on Wikipeda are made by gaining consensus in the proper venue. My user talk page is not that venue. Please do not comment here about this issue anymore. J.delanoygabsadds 21:05, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

vandal at 216.26.205.14
"Attention:
This IP address, 216.26.205.14, is registered to Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board and may be shared by multiple users of an educational institution. If the institution uses proxy servers, this IP address may represent many users at many physical computers."
Add that there may be users at several different schools who don't know each other. I had an idea that when anyone from this address edits, they should get an immediate pop-up message (not waiting until after the edit is saved), trying to solicit cooperation from other local users:
Dear Thunder Bay District Students,
Someone at your (give details) IP address has been damaging Wikipedia articles. A string of 20 detailed warnings on the 216.26.205.14 Discussion Page has apparently not been noticed by the blunderer. In the name of the billions of good folks worldwide who count on Wikipedia for accurate information, please help us by tracking this individual down and gently persuading them to take a look at the Contributions page, review the nature of each attack and reasons given for reverting it, etc., and maybe find a partner with which to work henceforth on Wikipedia articles, including reading all boring but relevant tutorials together. With mutual support let us hope the psychological issues may be resolved because we don't want to lose the positive energies of this person in the long term (etc. etc.). --Wiki-bot(give details).Tokerdesigner (talk) 00:50, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I think it is highly unlikely that something like that will ever be implemented. First, there are many millions of school IP addresses, and leaving a note on all if them would be extremely costly in terms of hardware and software implementation. Second, a feature such as this would have to be implemented directly by developers, and as far as I know, they would be unlikely to do so. Third, I very seriously doubt that this would do anything to curb vandalism. If anything, it would probably serve to increase vandalism (see WP:BEANS). J.delanoygabsadds 01:29, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
changing my edit
You changed my edit on the wikipedia page for marmaduke, saying it was unconstructive. I make no actual statement about my personal views on the quality of marmaduke, but am instead explaning the content of a blog which criticizes marmaduke. I have placed this in the criticism section of the page, as the blog is a criticism of the strip. I just went around "accepting" the requests so you would know that you could edit, and so that Category:Requests for unblock would not list you as requesting unblock. - I don't know. I think when it was first launched, it was more radical, but now it has evolved into a kind of neutral zone where Wikipedians, former Wikipedians, vandals and banned users, and other people can enter into (at least semi-) rational conversation. Some people still hate it, but I think that in the end, it is a good thing, since it provides a valuable outside perspective without being completely irrational like most other sites that track events on Wikipedia. proxy
Someone put what seems like spam in my talk page. It was just a one sentence mention of a website. They did it to about 5-8 people only. You have blocked them for 3 years with a mention of a proxy. How does proxies work? I don't know too much about technical stuff. Chergles (talk) 19:02, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- That is a very prolific spammer who I believe uses a computer program in conjunction with an open proxy finder in order to evade his blocks. I would not recommend visiting the website he listed. It attempts to force-download several questionable files when you go there.
- An open proxy is a IP address that allows other people to make an internet connection through it, disguising the original sender's IP address. Since Wikipedia identifies (and hence blocks) users who are not logged in by their IP addresses, open proxies are a common way of evading a block, so they are typically blocked for very long periods of time. I usually block for 3 years, because I believe that is typically how long an internet service provider leases an IP address for. If I am in a hurry because of multiple proxies in quick succession, as I was last night, I will usually block for 5 years, because that time appears on the drop-down menu on Special:BlockIP, so it is faster to just click it rather than typing out a custom time. Changes to "Civil Air Patrol"
I made some legal changes to the Wikipedia Page "Civil Air Patrol" I have been a member of the program for six years and am currently a Captain. If you would like to check my crudentials, my name is David Balch III my ID number is 350702.
The information on that page is illegal per orders handed down from the US Air Force. The changes that I made need to stand. The "Archer" system is considered classified. I signed a non-disclosure agreement about the exact information on that page.
If you need me to provide any further information, please feel free to e-mail me at zoltex12@gmail.com
Again, please allow these changes to stand, that information is CLASSIFIED
Thank you,

- While you have infinite parallel wavefunctions (the coconuts, for instance), they are otherwise probability-tunneled variants of the same object. In the event of a wave function collapse across the infinite variations in probability, you would end up with a single coconut being returned to sender, not a multitude of coconuts. Instead of a solar-system swallowing singularity snacking sedately on our little blue-green dirtball of a world, the larger issue of your scenario would be the twin affronts to our economy of the price of coconuts dropping to nil (since we'd have an infinite supply of them) and uncollected insufficient postage costs crippling the shipping industry. Of course, since my own scenario implies a total existence failure (that is, the universe just ceases to exist), I think I'd prefer cheap coconuts instead. Laters! The words "popular", "successful", "long-running" and so on are not "POV" words as you label them, they are descriptive. While it is certainly legitimate to challenge on of them for their accuracy, they are not verboten in and of themselves, and deleting them wherever you find them is, once again, disruptive to the encyclopedia. --98.192.44.39 (talk) 16:45, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Rollback misuse
I was considering creating {{uw-rollback}} to warn users about rollback abuse. How many warnings should the users be given for this? -- IRP ☎ 21:08, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
- Just my two cents' worth: Users with rollback privileges are already established regulars, so a templated warning for rollback abuse might raise WP:DTTR concerns. Cosmic Latte (talk) 21:20, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
- WP:DTTR (and WP:TTR, come to that) are personal essays, not any kind of policy, so pay as much or as little attention to it as you want. My take would be that this template is unnecessary for the opposite reason; no warning ought to be given. If a user's abusing rollback – or any other tool – take it away from them and they can reapply when they're ready. Inappropriate rollback is more disruptive than vandalism, as it potentially drives away valid editors, and I see no reason to make allowances if kids don't know how to work their new toys. – iridescent 21:24, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Request for Advice on dealing with a new editor
Hi, User talk:arojr has been adding links to his blog to various articles, which have all been reverted. His first complete article Transportation and the Farmington canal was speedied G12 yesterday for being a copy of an article on his blog. To get around this he has removed the article from his blog and recreated it here. He's asked me if this is OK. How do I tell him that this doesn't really solve the problem with the article - which is a school report - without discouraging him from contributing? Please help
Is YouTube considered a reliable source, under any circumstance? --The Guy complain edits 18:59, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- No. Any user-generated content is unreliable, because anyone can say whatever they want. J.delanoygabsadds 19:01, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- What if it's official from the creator of a content. For example: there is, hypothetically, some information about a book on the writer's YouTube page. A user argues that it is reliable because it is the writer's YouTube, not a random account's. Is it reliable in that theoretical case? --The Guy complain edits 19:13, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm. I don't know about that. I'd say that if it is legitimate information, it is unlikely that the only place you can get that info would be on YouTube, so maybe try and see if you can find the info somewhere else, and only use YouTube as a last resort if there is utterly nothing anywhere else. J.delanoygabsadds 19:17, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, the actual predicament is quite different. It's that somebody is trying to write a description for a music video, but it is severely POV. I mean, every sentence there is something like "there is soldiers who resemble soldiers from Nazi Germany," etc, except he has no references to back up those POVs. I tried removing the content, but he is adamant that YouTube is a valid reference for those POV sentences. I am sure YouTube is not a valid reference in that case, is it? --The Guy complain edits 19:20, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- Correct. Unless a reliable source says they look like Nazi soldiers, saying they do is a personal opinion and thus it is original research, which is unacceptable. Describing something yourself is not appropriate, as things will likely look different to other people. J.delanoygabsadds 19:23, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- I'm sure if I tell him this, he'll still argue it. I'm basically done, this is getting to the point where I'm getting stressed, and I'm the only one arguing against him. Would you like to help me, please? Just say the word. If not, then that's fine, too. --The Guy complain edits 19:29, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Just wanted to consult you; I made a reply here, and I wanted your opinion (at your earliest convenience, of course) on whether it is in compliance with the general policies, and whether or not it is well thought-out. Thanks in advance. --The Guy complain edits 02:11, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Seems good. J.delanoygabsadds 02:20, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the opinion. Now, here's the original description of the music video which was being debated:
“ | The video starts out with the The Guy, Disturbed's mascot, falling to earth. It then shows tanks sporting a sideways black American dollar sign within a circle of white that is within a field of red, followed by legions of soldiers, all dressed in black Nazi SS-like uniforms, with only their shoulder patches showing that they belong to different countries. Later on, the leaders of the United States, Russia, France, Japan, and United Kingdom are shown sitting at a table with the same sideways black American dollar sign on it, fiercely debating. The video then shifts into full scale violence as cities around the world are bombed and the troops, whose patches have been replaced with the same symbol as on the tanks, shoot people down in the streets. Eventually The Guy confronts the soldiers and stirs the rebels to revolt, and flags of the nations of the world are shown, with the final flag being the sideways black American dollar sign. The Guy then leads the rebels to the United Nations building where they attack the representatives and finally the overweight businessman whom, when destroyed by The Guy, explodes into dollar bills, implying that he was the embodiment of greed. | ” |
Here's the one I just made, adjusted as I watched the video. I tried to keep my own interpretations out, favoring instead to simply state the events of the video:
“ | The video initially depicts The Guy, Disturbed's mascot, falling to earth. It then displays military forces bombing various locations, followed by legions of soldiers from different countries. The video then shows The Guy, escaping bondage from chains, as the military forces continue to assault cities. Then the video depicts The Guy wandering city streets as they are being bombed and as soldiers are killing people. Later on, the leaders of different countries of the world are shown fiercely debating. Eventually, The Guy confronts soldiers and stirs rebels to revolt, killing the soldiers as The Guy leads more rebels to a building where they overthrow the representatives and finally a businessman whom, when destroyed by The Guy, explodes into dollar bills, which fall to earth as the rebels, and eventually, The Guy, raise their fists in unity. | ” |
Is mine an improvement? --The Guy complain edits 02:38, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- I'm probably not the best person to ask that, but I think it's OK. J.delanoygabsadds 02:44, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
Do you know any users who could come into this discussion and give an unbiased viewpoint? Right now he's arguing the significance of the Swastika (which doesn't appear once in the video, but a thing he believes to resemble it does). He's saying since the Swastika is so significant, then that means if something resembles it, it belongs there. He continues to revert my edits, and still is citing YouTube as a reference. He even posted a reference for one of his user-interpretations. I was surprised and was going to let it pass; until I checked the reference. It was a photo of the thing he was describing, with not text, but the comment he was citing it for said that the drawing resembled SS soldiers and Darth Vader, clearly his own interpretation, him citing a simple picture making that obvious. Anyways, I just want some more unbiased opinions, here. He doesn't take me seriously, so I figure I need at least another person to sort this out, as I suspect both our aspects are a little misconstrued. --The Guy complain edits 15:27, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

- Hi Phoenix.
- You are probably right, but we generally don't block IP addresses permanently. Also, when the block expires, if there is more vandalism, it will likely be only a short time before your school is blocked for another year. It only takes a short time to block someone, and our anti-vandalism team is very good, so I don't think it will be a major issue. Thanks for the advice, though. - Actually, you don't have to have an account to edit >99% of pages on this site (although you can do a lot more if you do create an account and log in). If you are not logged in, Wikipedia's software treats your IP address as your username, so it is likely that someone else used the IP you have now to vandalize. Again, the best way to avoid getting irrelevant warnings is to create an account. I would encourage you to do so. Wikipedia requires absolutely no personal information to create an account, although it is recommended that you provide an email address in case you forget your password. If you're not sure where to find an image you can use, a good place to look is on Wikimedia Commons. All the images there are freely usable her, and Wikimedia Commons is linked through with Wikipedia, so you can just type out the image's Commons name here and it will display here, even though it is not actually on Wikipedia. Header added 21
J. delanoy,
I recently changed content on a page for "The Minister's Black Veil" under the "Symbols" header. You reverted all my changes saying that changes made were unhelpful. However, I respectfully disagree. On the original page, it says "It is said..." Someone inserted a "who" tag. I found the 'who': Edgar Allan Poe. I quoted Poe and added the citation. Not sure why you deleted my edit when I'm actually responding to a "who" tag.
I changed it again... and hope you will consider leaving it this time.
Thank you,

I did not realize you had made more than one edit in a row, and the tool I am using generally undoes all consecutive edits by the same user. - Two things: First, just because other similar pages exist does not mean yours is automatically allowable. If you have a problem with them, you are free to create an account or log in and nominate them for deletion. Second, it is impossible to create a page (other than a talk page) without a user account. Since you have not logged in, you cannot have created the page you are complaining about, so why do you care? If you are interested in creating a page, I would suggest you look over our guide to writing your first article. J.delanoygabsadds 07:23, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
Request for help with a distruptive editor
Hello J.delanoy,
You gave me some advice a couple months ago on how to avoid 3RR when dealing with disruptive editors while I was temporarily blocked. I'm on the brink of the 3RR on the John McCain presidential campaign, 2008 article and do not want to violate it again, so I'm asking for your assistance because of your previous advice to me and because you're a third party. But it has more to do with just the 3RR. I've been dealing with a disruptive editor for the past few weeks who is completely unopen to compromise, revert wars, and now is !vote counting on an RFC he started only a couple days ago, amongst other things -- and I've completely lost my patience with him. I do not believe that the disruptive editor, Commodore Sloat has been exhibiting good faith for some time during this dispute (as well as other disputes on the article, but that's neither here nor there). I've been pointing this out multiple times -- admittedly snidely and with sarcasm but my patience has been thin for a while, and he regards it as personal attacks even though there's plenty of evidence. I probably should've asked for assistance sooner, but better late than never, and I'm now officially convinced that there's no appeasing csloat because he has no intention of being appeased or reaching consensus.
As I said, this is related to the John McCain presidential campaign, 2008 article, particularly the World opinion subsection. This was a section that I created as part of an enhancement effort after the election, but it was also part of compromise to a major content dispute related to an edit that csloat made which was ultimately reformatted, reduced, and moved to the end World Opinion section. Everyone from both sides of the argument over exclusion/inclusion of the material supported the compromise, except csloat. Shortly afterward, he aimed most of his interest at the rest of the World Opinion section, focusing on removing content related to polling data about world disinterest in the election. But this isn't a content dispute (or just a content dispute, rather), this is about disruptive behavior both in editing and discussion.
First and foremost, I believe there is simply no appeasing him. I've made numerous compromises, and he has made absolutely none. This is best illustrated by comparing my original version and my most recent version. Here's a list of the compromises I've made:
- Added information about a statistically insignificant margin for Laos in the 2nd paragraph; a slight modification of one of his edits.
- Changed the lede sentence for the 3rd paragraph since it was not sourced with a more neutrally worded lede sentence; per his request.
- Removed any reference to "apathy" and replaced with "no opinion" in the 3rd paragraph; per his request.
- Provided separate sources from the main source for China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Latin America because these poll results weren't specifically mentioned in the main source's summary; per his request (which I'll elaborate on shortly).
As for Csloat, he hasn't made any compromises. All he's done is remove content and claim that I'm drawing conclusions outside of source material and distorting data. Here's the diff of his first edit/content removal where he pastes over data displaying various countries' disinterest towards the election with a redundant quote (all the information was already in the section's lede paragraph). Here's the diff from his most recent edit/content removal, and here's all that's changed:
- After having it pointed out that his pasted quote was redundant with the first paragraph, he simply removed the first paragraph.
- After pointing out the hypocrisy of him calling poll data about China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Latin America "cherry picked" but condoning inclusion of data about the European Union, Africa, Canada, Australia, Japan, and South Korea which came from the same source, he simply removed everything and replaced the entire paragraph with his original pasted quote.
- Per a token compromise that I never asked for and don't support, he pasted a sentence about China after the quote.
CSloat came up with multiple reasons that my contribution was against policy. The accusations would come iteratively as each subsequent accusation was either disproved or addressed, and the accusations got more far-reaching each time -- to the point where his complaint had no valid basis in any Wikipedia policy or guideline. Here's how it unfolded:
- Claimed my contribution was original research. I explained to him that this was not original research since everything in the contribution was backed by the source.
- He then changed to claiming that my contribution was synthesis. I explained to him that this claim has no basis since synthesis requires multiple sources.
- He claimed that the source drew a conclusion and that my edit was contrary to it. I explained that the source didn't draw a conclusion, it merely summarized poll data; I also pointed out that article specifically said that the majority of the world expressed disinterest, which is the material he was adamant about excluding.
- He started an RFC where he claimed that since the poll summary article is titled "World Citizens Prefer Obama to McCain by More Than 3-to-1" that citing any information that is not about this is against policy (again claiming original research). Now this is just plain ridiculous, and I flat out called it the worst and most transparent excuse that I've ever heard for exclusion of material. But since I realized that simply explaining this to him wouldn't be enough, I appeased his ridiculous claim and went and found articles that supported all of the polling statistics that he wanted excluded. I hoped that this would finally bring a close to this.
So now, he's just saying that he simply doesn't like it. His most recent post to the RFC said that there are still "multiple issues" even though he didn't bother to list any, and that I have no more valid points.
But it's more than just his overt resistance to compromise and the various reasons he's come up with for exclusion. During the dispute, when he was on the brink of violating the 3RR rule, he instead placed a totally-disputed tag on my version of the World opinion subsection multiple times. since this was obviously not true and was clearly way too severe a tag, I regarded it as vandalism and removed it each time. During his countless reverts, in the edit summaries he'd often put "per talk", claim his edit was the "consensus" when the dispute was between just us two, claim his edit was "preferred" when again it was just us two, and claim my edits were "disruptive" when his edits were the ones removing content. The last straw was an RFC that he started, with a very slanted paragraph explaining the issue. After two days and only two other opinions voiced, he counted !votes and declared consensus and unilaterally reapplied his revert -- and this was only sixteen hours after my latest version which addresses all of his stated concerns. It became evident at this point that he was not interested in compromise or consensus, he simply wanted my contribution excluded and intended to count !vote as a basis for the exclusion.
The problem is, now one the people who expressed an opinion in the RFC is engaging in the reverting as well. I don't think this person is a sock puppet, but it honestly wouldn't surprise me at all if it turned out to be one.
If you made it through this entire post, I thank you since I know it's a lot to read. But I wanted to be as clear as possible what my reason is for needing help, because this has gone on for too long and I need help since consensus and compromise have proved impossible.
Thank you, and I appreciate any help you can offer. --Amwestover (talk|contrib) 03:30, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- Suffice to say that the above is a complete misrepresentation of my position by Amwestover -- it is such a distortion that it borders on sheer sophistry. Other editors have seen this pretty clearly, as the discussion has shown that the only other editors who have shown an interest preferred the version that I've suggested rather than Amwestover's. I've tried several times to suggest that Amwestover read such gems as WP:AGF and stick to arguing the issues rather than hurling accusations of "disruptive editing." I've been more than reasonable in the discussion, and the version that is currently in place has the virtue of being supported by consensus. That said, I'm happy to look at any new version suggested by anyone else. But I implore Amwestover, please stop running around Wikipedia attacking me as some kind of disruptive editor or vandal when you know very well that neither of those things is true. If you don't want to discuss the issues in talk, please don't engage me at all. I have been very restrained about reporting your behavior -- you blatantly violated 3RR a few times now, and you have laced nearly every comment to me with sometimes vicious personal attacks, and you even filed a phony AN/I report on me and used part of your userspace to host an attack page setting up for another phony AN/I, and yet I have held back from reporting this behavior in the hopes that you would eventually realize the virtue of civil discussion. I ask you once more, please stop turning everything into an attack on my character. Thanks. csloat (talk) 18:57, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I wasn’t surprised to see this new user blocked: indeed I had warned him that he was on the verge of being so. Nevertheless, I think that he does have a point over his final edit to Groes Faen. What he removed was an unreferenced paragraph about an actor called Simon James Morgan, who as far as I know, may not be very notable in himself (this is his imdb profile) and whose placement in this article does appear a bit over the top. The paragraph had been inserted by an anon, and I myself would have been tempted to remove it from an article I was watching.
Anyway, if you felt like reviewing your block of Wochende, I would be happy. Obviously if he returned to his vandalistic pranks he would deserve an immediate indef block.

Hi. While I agree with the reversion, do you consider their recent edit to be vandalism? While not up to WP's quality of writing, it was an on-point comment and strikes me as a goodfaith edit. What do you think? --NERIC-Security (talk) 18:12, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know. Taken in context, it seems much closer than if taken singly. The reason the warning I left characterized it as "vandalism" is because they had recently been warned for a very similar edit, and apparently they did not get the idea after the first warning. I'm not 100% sure here, though. J.delanoygabsadds 18:17, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Although I disagree with the edits made by Stonehammer (talk · contribs), I do not believe that his edits constitute vandalism, and the block may have been premature. Looks like there were also WP:3RR violations on all sides. Better to direct the user to the talk page and give him a chance to discuss it there. -- Tcncv (talk) 17:11, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps it was. In this case, it was obvious to me that he was only here to push an agenda, namely, that Tibet does not exist. From my experience, users like that either flatly refuse to enter into discussion ("The Truth™ is not negotiable"), or if they do enter a discussion, they do nothing but cause needless drama.
- I am open to reconsidering the block if he should choose to appeal. Instructions for appealing a block are very clearly posted on the "you have been blocked" notice that appears when a blocked user attempts to edit. However, I very seriously doubt that he will appeal his block. Most users who are here to push an agenda leave when they realize that they are going to be unsuccessful, and as I stated above, I have no question that that was his sole purpose here. Request for Advice
Hi, it's Marek here, would you mind taking a look at this edit. I do not agree that the format (my edit) was 'poor'. It is not the first this user has reverted me under similar conditions (on three other occasions). Could I please ask your advice. Thank you. Marek.69 talk 17:54, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
- I would say just ignore it. I don't think it's that big of a deal, and it is not likely other people are going to see that and go "Oh, Marek is a bad formatter". J.delanoygabsadds 18:11, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I am ignoring it. Not really worth a confrontation, in my opinion also. I'm not worried about people labeling me a 'bad formatter' - they can make their own minds up on that. It's just that it's the fourth (or fifth) occasion of this user undoing my edits on 'Twin Towns' on pages like Opole, Wiesbaden and Wrocław with edit summary comments like (→Twin towns: formatted less ugiliy) and (rv fanciful and unacceptable format in a serious encyclopedia). It's just a bit annoying (and rude in my opinion) - I am going to let it go though. Sorry to have bothered you with this. Thanks Marek.69 talk 18:31, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

I was thinking of creating this page for people to have general discussion about Wikipedia. What do you think? -- IRP ☎ 16:08, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- A lot of people use IRC to do that. A wiki really isn't very well suited for general talk. Things like edit-conflicts would make it very difficult for more than two people to carry on a meaningful conversation. J.delanoygabsadds 17:32, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Editing Issues
Hi
I made a couple of changes to the scapegoat page, one because it completely lacked any citation whatsoever, and one link promoting a band that is unrelated to the page's subject matter.
I felt these deletions were appropriate, and they were done with the intention of increasing the page's accuracy and freedom from commercial content.
Here are the excerpts from the tutorial which I believed justify the edits...
"...articles should consist of encyclopedic information about "notable" subjects. What exactly constitutes notability is the subject of constant debate on Wikipedia, but few of us believe that there should be articles about every person on the planet, every company that sells anything, or each street in every town in the world.”
"Wikipedia requires that you cite sources for the information you contribute. All sources should be listed in a section called "References".
I'm a complete novice at this.
Many Thanks.

193.95.128.0/18
Hi J.delanoy, thank you for dealing with this vandal. But could you please explain what this rangeblock is based on? There are hundreds of different companies with their static IPs in this range who aren't connected to each other. Were there other IPs than 193.95.151.196, which is probably an anonymizer or such and also from Ireland, while the vandal's sits in the USA? --Oxymoron83 13:17, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know. When that vandal shows up, he typically operates from within a particular (probably residential) net range, and blocks on single IPs are ineffective, as he quickly switches to another IP address within the same range. I had not previously seen him use proxies or anonymizers, so I assumed that he was again following his normal modus operandi. I unblocked the range. Sorry for the hassle :/ J.delanoygabsadds 13:43, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- No problem. Generally range blocks that last for more than a couple of hours should be checked for possible collateral damage first, for example using the gadget. And the range shown in the whois report is often not the range that needs blocking, for home users the proper range can usually be calculated only if you have more than 1 IP (unless you want to block a /32 range ;) ), the more the better. For example in the case above, the next best range for 193.95.151.196 would be 193.95.151.192/26 only (64 IPs, while 193.95.128.0/18 includes 16384 IPs) to block Grafton Group without blocking other customers. WikiCup notice
The 2009 WikiCup will begin on January 1, 2009. The first round will run through March 31, 2009. For more information on this tournament, read the "about" section on the main WikiCup page.
This year, we have a different system in calculating points. At User:Garden/WikiCup/Submissions, you will find information about submitting your article (and other) work to earn points. Each contestant will have their own individual subpage for submitting completed work to us.
This year, User:ST47 will also be running one of his bots to calculate mainspace edits and read your submission subpages to calculate the point values you receive based on our scoring chart.

Your comment will be appreciated
I saw that you have visited and edited List_of_Nobel_Laureates_by_country. Unfortunately, I am the only user who seems to be actively taking care of this article. I recently proposed a guideline on the corresponding talk page by which I try to solve the issue on how to correctly mention the birth place of a laureate. I did not get any reaction. As I said, I think noone else has it on watch. For maintaining the article it would be helpful to have consensus on the rules that underly the composition of the list. Unfortunately, I cannot build consensus alone. Also I want to avoid ownership accusations in the future. Therefore, your critical opinion to the topic would be very much appreciated, if you have the time and interest to sort this thing out. Thanks. Tomeasy T C 20:06, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
FT2
Please do not label legitimate ctiticisms as an attack. Unless you consider any criticisms of an arbs suitability as an attack? RMHED (talk) 22:16, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- Seconded. If you're going to block RHMED for that, you can start by blocking me for this. Whatever you personally think of him, FT2 is almost certainly the most unpopular arb since Kelly Martin – see this for some background perspective. – iridescent 22:21, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- What useful purpose is served by gloating about that fact on his talk page? J.delanoygabsadds 22:43, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- Have you read FT2's talkpage? It makes Gwen Gale's look like a model of Platonic discourse. The very first thread on the current version is an accusation of abuse; it also contains such gems as this. RHMED has been round a long time (oddly, he joined the same week as me); he knows what's fair (if strong) comment and what's a personal attack. FT2 is more than capable of taking care of himself. – iridescent 22:53, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- I still don't see any way that it could be appropriate to say something like that, and that has nothing to do with how long I've been around. From what little I have interacted with RHMED, my impression of him is not favorable. And I am not the only one with this sentiment. Based on my own limited experiences with him, and the many very choice comments at the link above, it is patently obvious that RHMED's relatively long tenure here on Wikipedia has not taught him very much about proper conduct. I have no question he made the comment on FT2's talk page merely to be vindictive. J.delanoygabsadds 23:08, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- My goodness next you'll be proposing to ban me for not being popular enough. Maybe you'd like to test your current popularity via a reconfirmatiuon RfA? RMHED (talk) 00:18, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- I am not, and I never was planning on proposing a community ban of you. I disapprove of your actions, but blocking or banning - no. This is not a bannable offense, IMHO.
- With regard to your second statement, should a couple of more editors express the opinion that I am not performing my admin duties properly, I would be more than happy to stand for reconfirmation, and if necessary, surrender my bit. I can say without hesitation that I have never taken an action here, logged or not, that I did not think was the right thing to do. I have no illusions that I am perfect, but I think that my assessment has been correct the majority of the time. When I am incorrect, I have, as far as I can remember, never hesitated to admit fault. J.delanoygabsadds 00:35, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- Please don't see my above question as a serious request. I don't really believe you should have a reconfirmation RfA, pleny of others should though. FT2's a big boy, and everyone knows big boys don't cry, they spend hours compiling evidence in their user space instead. RMHED (talk) 01:48, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Requesting help on my talk page
I cannot get an IP user to understand that editors are not allowed to remove massive amounts of referenced encyclopedic content from an article just to shorten it. Please see User talk:IRP#Illegal immigration in the United states and help this user understand that this is not allowed. -- IRP ☎ 00:48, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- If the page's length us the only problem, tell him he should create an account, and create a related page to put some of the content in, and then link to the new page from the original article. J.delanoygabsadds 00:52, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- Question: What policy does it violate when you remove the content just to shorten the article? -- IRP ☎ 00:56, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know, specifically, if it does. I think that it could be characterized as disruption, but that is a pretty general term. J.delanoygabsadds 00:58, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

About my autoblock
Is there a way for you to give the IP a temporary whack with the banhammer (account creation disabled) without autoblocking me? Because I looked through the internet history, (because my brother had just been on the same computer I am editing from now and I found it suspicious that I was autoblocked, and the username seemed typical of him) and I can confirm that my brother used this computer to vandalize as that account. Inferno, Lord of Penguins 04:05, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I'm reluctant to block an address that has not made any edits. Do you happen to know it a static IP? If n ot, would a short block, say, 3 or 8 hours, be long enough? J.delanoygabsadds 04:09, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- Dunno if its static. He knows I've found him out, so a short block (three hours, that'll last until he goes to bed), along with my cold glaring eyes would probably stop him from causing any more disruption. Inferno, Lord of Penguins 04:12, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Yaya Pagh Deletion
I really don't get why you say that Yaya Pagh is irrelevant. I'm her fan and I feel insulted. You can find her in tv shows and magazines all over in Brazil. You are prejudging her or what I wrote about her? Does she have to be a in a beauty pageant, a reality tv show girl or serial killer to be in wikipedia? Don't let her looks fool you, she could probably even beat you in chess.
I can start a petition to have her on wikipedia if its needed. Kat. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.116.163.237 (talk) 01:32, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- 1) I didn't delete it. 2) it was deleted via WP:PROD, so you had five days to contest its deletion and 3) it was deleted almost four months ago. Why are you complaining now? J.delanoygabsadds 01:35, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Four months ago? I created it today. Please help me if you can. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.116.163.237 (talk) 01:46, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm? Oh, uncapitalized. Well, to begin with, you need to tell more about her. From the page that was there, I couldn't tell anything about her. Second, you need to provide some citations to reliable sources so that people know what is being said is true. Reading our guide to writing your first article may be helpful as well. J.delanoygabsadds 01:54, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Four months? wow! I wrote about her today and after 5 minutes it was deleted and it had your name on. Just want her to know that it was me who made her be here. Help me! Tell me what I need to do.
Thanks any way for replying and happy holidays! Kat —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.116.163.237 (talk) 01:54, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Sorry! I couldn't see my first reply, thats why I asked again. I thought that google was a reliable source. If not do I need to scan magazines and record tv shows? If so let me know. Just tell me where to send them.
Thanks again! K. -Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.116.163.237 (talk) 02:02, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- You can't just directly cite Google. You should read WP:RELIABLE. That will give you a better idea of what to look for. J.delanoygabsadds

I saw your comment on the blog that I help maintain. We would love another contributor; the site was my friend's idea, but he's not actually too involved with WP. We are getting featured here, and it preparation are trying to spiff up the site. I know that your administrative duties probably sap much of your time, but this need not use any more of it than necessary, or the similar set of links you maintain on your user page. Whatever you are able to do would be great, either just sending me a link to a cool diff when you see one, or writing posts with an account on the site. What do you think? Can you help us out? Let me know. Cheers, Jake WartenbergTalk 06:24, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Neutrality of the Israeli Air Stike on Gaza page
Why do you feel the need to stress the fact that women and children were among the civillians killed in Gaza and not that there were women and children killed by the rockets and missles that had been fired by Hamas. You only mention the other side with light detail. I would like to suggest that you might focus on the Hamas attacks in a darker light. This is bothering me solely because I know some of the people who have been killed in the other attacks and yet your page indicates that those are not as important. Hey JD! I've returned from my wikibreak. Perhaps you should protect your user pages; they still seem to be a target of the usual hapless vandals. AnaheimSux (talk · contribs) created another spare account today. ~ Troy (talk) 19:29, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Advice for fellow vandal fighter
Hello!
I recognized your name as somebody who often beats me to vandalism revert so I'm going to ask you for this piece of advice. I am long time Wikipedia user (since 2003 at least) but only relatively recent editor. I started editing because it disgusted me that anyone might feel the need to vandalize volunteer non-profit project like this. So I joined ranks of RC vandal patrollers and I'm doing my best to keep vandals in check. I've been using Twinkle to simplify and speed up vandal fighting process. But, I keep running into recommendations and opinions that next step in vandal fighting is Huggle. Sadly, it requires rollback permission which I don't have.
So my question is in 2 parts:
(1) As I see you use Huggle, can you tell me does it make that much difference, is it better/faster than Twinkle, basically, should I bother getting my hands on it?
(2) If yes, in your opinion as admin, do I stand a chance of getting rollback rights required for Huggle if I apply for it on Wikipedia:Requests for permissions? I understand that that editors with less than 500 main namespace edits rarely get the permission, but that does not exclude the possibility. My reasoning is that I might as well try to get it ASAP instead waiting till after 500 edits. Both easier for me and better for Wikipedia if I try now. In deciding on your answer, I invite you to check out my edits and to point out anything I'm doing wrong, especially if you decide to answer with negative response due to reason other than number of edits.
Thank you in advance --Melmann(talk) 00:34, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- As a TPSer of JD, I say 1) yes yes and yes, 2) rollback granted. :-) Tan | 39 00:47, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for making this as painless as possible. Cheers!!!--Melmann(talk) 00:54, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Deletion
Hey. :) Why did you delete my block message ;-) ? That was not pure vandalism. — Aitias // discussion 03:41, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, the first revision of that page is vandalism, and that is all I saw when I opened the page history, so I deleted it. You must have added your notice after I opened Twinkle's deletion form, but before my browser processed the JS request. I've seen stranger things happen... Dear J - I noticed that an IP contacted you on the 8th Oct complaining about reversions on said page. There appears to be a fairly long history of tl;dr insertions concerning sundry municipal misbehaviour, and the current version indeed contains a typical sample of an uncited (and possibly partially lifted) mega-paragraph. I'd be happy prepared to attempt to unravel the edits and reversions etc but thought I'd first better sort out with someone who knows the procedures etc as I'm not sure where to take this and if there isn't a more straightforward way of knocking this on the head. I've no particular reason at all to get involved other than chancing upon it but its all good experience :) Anyway, your advice would be appreciated. Ta. Plutonium27 (talk) 13:11, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- PS. What makes me unsure about how to proceed is the fact that the problem/s stem mostly from IPs contribs. if I shoulda taken this straight to a report/page pro/ANI or somewhere, apologies. Plutonium27 (talk) 13:16, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- PPS Oh and the IP mentioned at the top is Special:Contributions/208.186.134.103. Man, I am just not getting it together today am I... Plutonium27 (talk) 13:19, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- K, I've excised the essay, templated article and TP. Will send like to IP matey. More I don't know what to do and anyway I gotta get to work (night shift in the A&E). Happy New Year! Plutonium27 (talk) 18:40, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

- Not a problem. Huggle takes a bit to get used to, so try to take it slow, and be careful. I know many admins who will revoke your Huggle rights for things like that. J.delanoygabsadds 18:31, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion. It can get nerve-wracking at times on Huggle. This is only my second day of Huggle after many failed installation attempts in the past month or so. Happy New Year, Willking1979 (talk) 19:20, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Reverted edits on Axis powers
Hi. I was just passing by and noticed that several edits by 98.231.153.180 (talk) were reverted and warnings were issues, I don't think it was made clear what the problem was and the user's talk pages edits were reverted as vandalism also. Was there a particular reason for the revert? I think it would be better to provide a clearer explanation to the user. (Sometimes it's easy to jump the gun using huggle and misuse the revert capability.) -- Tcncv (talk) 22:06, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know for sure. I thought I had removed those warnings. J.delanoygabsadds 22:07, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- So do you no longetr consider them to be vandalism? -- Tcncv (talk) 22:22, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Hey there, J.delanoy! Happy new Gregorian year. All the best for the new year, both towards you and your family and friends too. I know that I am the only person lonely enough to be running this thing as the new year is ushered in, but meh, what are you going to do. I like to keep my templated messages in a satisfactorily melancholy tone. ;)
Congratulations to Coren, Wizardman, Vassyana, Carcharoth, Jayvdb, Casliber, Risker, Roger Davies, Cool Hand Luke and Rlevse, who were all appointed to the Arbitration Committee after the ArbCom elections. I am sure I am but a voice of many when I say I trust the aforementioned users to improve the committee, each in their own way, as listed within their respective election statements. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to update the 2009 article, heh. Best wishes, neuro(talk) 00:50, 1 January 2009 (UTC) |
