Article creation

[edit]

Hi David. Thanks for your recent new articles, but please remember that all articles must have an introduction. Please could you add one to Southend-on-Sea Borough Council election, 2018, Stevenage Borough Council election, 2018, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council election, 2018 and Peterborough City Council election, 2018.

Also, all articles should be categorised. You need to add them to (e.g.) Category:Peterborough City Council elections and Category:English local elections, 2018. It would also be helpful if you could add templates like {{Cambridgeshire elections}} and {{United Kingdom local elections, 2018}}.

This is not the first time I've asked you to resolve these issues (I asked three times in 2016), yet it seems you have continued to churn out articles without these basic characteristics – Tendring District Council election, 1995 still has no introduction (and I have just had to add templates and categories to it).

I'm really not meaning to be impolite, but competence is required to edit Wikipedia, and repeated failures to meet basic article requirements may eventually result in you being blocked or banned from creating new articles. Please try and take this on board as your contributions are helpful, but do need to be improved. Cheers, Number 57 19:34, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The following articles that you created also need introductions added:
Thanks, Number 57 19:46, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies User:Number 57, I have added brief generic introductions to the articles you referenced and from now on will endeavour to include the particulars you noted above in any new articles I create and/or edit. If there are any other issues, please let me know. Many thanks, C.david.ham (talk) 14:16, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thank you. Another couple of tips: Categories are added using square rather than curly brackets, and you need to include a references section at the end of articles. See This edit as an example of how it should be done. Cheers, Number 57 17:44, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You got Brentwood Borough Council election, 2018 spot on. Good work! Number 57 20:50, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Election map colouration

[edit]

Hi,

Firstly, thanks for the compliments!

With regard to alternating fill patterns, here is how to create them in Inkscape:

1. Create two rectangles anywhere (say, 100x15 each) and fill each with one of the colours needed (in the Hedingham example, this would be a blue rectangle and a grey one) and place one directly below the other to make a half-blue, half-grey box. Then group them together.
2. Select the group then go to Object > Pattern > Objects to Pattern.
3. Under Fill and Stroke > Fill there is an option for 'Pattern'. At the top of the drop-down list should something along the lines of 'pattern2335' (could be any number). Filling a shape with this pattern should give horizontal stripes in the two colours.
4. To make the stripes diagonal, use the Node tool (F2). A circle, a square and a cross should appear on or near the rectangles used to make the pattern. Hold Ctrl and drag the circle until the stripes in the filled shape are at 45°. Then you can delete the rectangles.

I hope this makes sense and is helpful - if not please let me know.

Thanks again! T85753 (talk) 18:36, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Alliance vs parties in 2022 French legislative election results

[edit]

Hi there, I've been adding results for individual constituencies in the 2022 French election and have been using parties rather than alliances. I did this because the "Results by constituency" section of the main page for the elections lists the individual parties of current seat-holders. I noticed you can reverted some of these changes. I've no hard preference, but thought the edits should be uniform so thought I'd reach out here.

Additionally, if we are using alliances, should the UDC also be used in place of LR or UDI?

ChristyMcMorrow (talk) 15:08, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your message. The way I have been adding the alliances is to match the official results given by the Ministry of Interior, which only lists the alliances, not individual parties. In addition, I have also been calculating the vote share changes for NUPES taking the combined vote of it's member parties from the 2017 results and calculating the increase/decrease from there.
That being said, I wholeheartedly endorse your view that there should be uniformity in the way these results are presented on Wikipedia. Could I propose that we use the "alliance" election box template for NUPES and Ensemble Citoyens? This would allow for an individual party to be listed along with the corresponding alliance in brackets next to it.
As for calculating vote share increase/decreases, I would be interested to hear your view on this - do you think it should be calculated from the combined 2017 vote or vote of the individual party? C.david.ham (talk) 15:23, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Using the alliance box makes a lot of sense I think, let's go for that.
What do you think about also using it for the UDC, as I've noticed some constituencies where UDI stood this time but LR did last time (or vice versa) and its appropriate I think to use the swing between those two given that they are an election pact, even if they're not listed as one with the Ministry of Interior.
I definitely think the combined 2017 vote of the NUPES members makes the most sense. I'd originally done the party with an asterisk, but the swing from the combined vote is more intuitive. ChristyMcMorrow (talk) 17:34, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

An article you recently created, 2023 Braintree District Council election, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three. Information icon Please refrain from introducing inappropriate pages, such as 2023 Watford Borough Council election, to Wikipedia, as doing so is not in accordance with our policies. For more information about creating articles, you may want to read Wikipedia:Your first article; you might also consider using the Article Wizard. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. Do not create drafts in mainspace. Either use your usespace or draftspace to build articles and only move them to main space after they are ready.  // Timothy :: talk  16:55, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The page mentioned above is not "inappropriate", it is a page that is being actively worked on as denoted by this tag placed at the top of the page: {{in use}} I have created over 20 similar pages for the 2023 UK local elections in a similar manner and this is the first time someone has flagged this. Sandbox

[edit]

Please note that your sandbox pages, such as User:C.david.ham/sandbox/2023 Tunbridge Wells Borough Council election, are not allowed to be filed in mainspace categories as if they were already finished articles. Do not readd categories to that page, or any other sandbox pages that you may create, until such time as they're actually being moved into articlespace. Thanks. My apologies, I that didn't realise adding categories to a sandbox page would cause it to appear in mainspace. I will refrain from doing so in the future. C.david.ham (talk) 16:41, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

An article you recently created, 2023 Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council election, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three, to be safe. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 10:58, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

2023 Central Bedfordshire Council election

[edit]

How did you calculate the votes and +/- in the election result table?

The number of votes seems lower than the total number of votes cast, and the +/- doesn't compare with the info for the previous 2019 election (e.g. Lib Dems on 9.7% in 2019, 15% in 2023, but a swing of -3.3% on your table). Jackmoore3 (talk) 14:52, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The votes in the election summary table are calculated by simply adding up the stated votes from each party's candidate in the ward results. Percentage calculations are done on those vote totals. There was an error in the Lib Dem vote share change, which I have now fixed. Do there seem to be any other errors you have found? Into oblivion (talk) 16:30, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copy-Paste

[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Draft:2023 Wealden District Council election a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into 2023 Wealden District Council election. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. The article Transform (political party) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Map for 2023 Derby City Council Election

[edit]

Hi,

I've gone through this page and noticed that the page in question (2023 Derby City Council election) had incorrectly assigned the councillors elected for Reform Derby (some of which were jointly nominated by Reform UK and others not) as Reform UK. I've corrected this and made a note of it at the top of the article, but your map shows Reform UK's colours. I don't know if you'd be able to change it or would be fine with me changing the colours to a different one (was going to follow the example of https://www.andrewteale.me.uk/leap/results/2023/73/ and go fuschia).

Would love to hear your thoughts,

Regards, Rambling Rambler (talk) 19:00, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 2024 England and Wales police and crime commissioner elections, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Arun and Adur. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, --DPL bot (talk) 17:54, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

2024 Walsall Council election results tables

[edit]

I noticed that during your changes to 2024 Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council election, you'd removed the "Rejected ballots" lines from the tables, and filled in the tables' "±%" and "Swing" figures.

I wasn't sure whether removing the rejected ballots figures was the right thing to do. (My personal preference is that if the figures are available, they should be included: both for the sake of comprehensiveness, and to help clarify that they're included in the turnout percentage calculation figure that comes from the source results declaration.) Also, I wasn't sure whether the ± change comparisons were with the correct dates: should they be compared to 2023 (the last election in those council wards), or since 2021 (the last election for these specific seats)?

So, I've asked on the talk page of WP:UKPOLITICS what is the best practice in these situations:
