[edit]On 7 November 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Price's Lost Campaign: The 1864 Invasion of Missouri, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Price's Lost Campaign: The 1864 Invasion of Missouri challenged the Lost Cause myth that Confederate soldiers did not engage in total war during Price's Raid? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Price's Lost Campaign: The 1864 Invasion of Missouri. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Price's Lost Campaign: The 1864 Invasion of Missouri), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

FAR
[edit]I just wanted to say a big THANKS for the help at FAR; since FAs are only as good as the lowest common denominator, I am always appreciative of any one who digs in there. Best regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:42, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. GA needs some work, too, but that'll be a massive project. When I started seeing calls for the removal of FA, I realized there was a problem. Hopefully, with a more active FAR process, FA will get some more respect. Hog Farm Bacon 17:53, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- More importantly, there are some good saves there :) PS, I saw something else about you on a page I try to avoid, but I am at 9/10 although I almost NEVER engage there ... ignore the naysayers. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:59, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. I just, sadly, placed a notice on the talk page of Daylight saving time. That's an important article, and it's at FA, but there's some issues there. Hopefully they get addressed. I'd much rather have the article at the FA standards than have to see it demoted, but if we want FA to mean something, we can't grandfather articles in. It's out of my area of expertise enough that I can't fix it myself, but hopefully others step in. Hog Farm Bacon 18:10, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- I don’t think anyone out there can fix it, but so it goes ... Eubulides was a huge loss. Bst, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:01, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Not as gruesome as war, but still yucky
[edit]Hi, Hog Farm. I was wondering if I could interest you in venturing outside of your normal realm. I will COMPLETELY understand if you are too busy, and there are several others I can ask (looking next at Harrias of the fine prose :). Ajpolino has been working up his first FAC at Buruli ulcer for several months. We only need a non-medical editor to look at it and opine whether it is lay-reader friendly; that is, does not have more than necessary medical jargon. Nothing like a full review ... just, yes, it's intelligible to a non-medical person and ready for FAC, or no it's too hard to understand. I usually pester Ceoil for my non-medical copyediting, but I am beginning to feel I am overtaxing the good man, and it's good to spread the wealth :) Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:06, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted
[edit]Hi Hog Farm. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group. Please check back at WP:PERM in case your user right is time limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:
- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. qedk (t 愛 c) 09:08, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

Noted and appreciated
[edit]I didn't want to let this pass by without a note of thanks and appreciation. Working at FAR often seems thankless, but on the other hand, it feels good to save a star for someone who slaved over that article years ago, as we do today on our articles, and to help a few not turn into black goo on the Internet. Once we let them go, they only get worse. I guess Blenheim was in worse shape than any of us realized, but kudos for going from this which passed FAC in 2006, to this today. Pace yourself, because they aren't all salavageable... this one was worth it.
You've been most helpful, but remember that it's a marathon, not a sprint, and don't let it interfere with writing the articles you are passionate about. The work this year is perchance harder than need be because FAR was moribund for so many years. Imagine if we had kept up, so that each year we only had to go back and review the five-year-old FAs, instead of the 15-year-old ones too, and everything in between. For that, I am so appreciative that some others have finally taken an interest in cleaning out the cruft.
I look forward to seeing that 13th Regiment, Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:07, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- It doesn't really feel like I've been that helpful over at FAR. Just three or four noms, and a few comments about moving to FARC or delisting, most of which were no-brainers. It'll be a few days before the 13th Regiment shows up, as my goal in writing most articles is to create something GAN-able, so I mainly just write articles when I have two hours to do one in a big block chunk. - By the way, would you have any interest in adminship? I'd think you'd do a good job. Hog Farm Bacon 05:12, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- I wish I had kept a tally of how many times I had been asked, along with my list of reasons for declining, which has changed and grown over the years. ;). And you have been remarkably helpful in reviewing FAs !! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 07:33, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- SandyGeorgia - I know you don't like pings, but I doubt you'd see this if I didn't ping you over, but I've finally cranked out 13th Missouri Cavalry Regiment (Confederate). Article writing is a long process for me, as I aim to not move article drafts out of my userspace until they're either GAN able or as close as they'll ever get. With the exception of David Ashley Parker from Powder Springs, which is probably permanently start-class but made for a quirky DYK hook. Hog Farm Bacon 23:54, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- Cool beans ! (Did you want me to review that Regiment? You know I Don't Do Food, and I Don't Do GA ? :) :) Where can I hear that song? Making me homesick for my youth ! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:09, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- Don't feel the need to review it. MILHIST is working on a GA review push right now, so it shouldn't set around too long. I'm hoping FA eventually, but that'll be much later. I sometimes worry that FAC will eventually get sick of MO CSA units, as the next one of mine will be a military unit as well. Hog Farm Bacon 00:23, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- FAC has never gotten sick of topics much less worthy :) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:24, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your quick immersion into WikiWorld. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project) |
User:Gog the Mild submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:
- Hog Farm has been on Wikipedia less than a year, but has hit it like a storm. They already have 56 GAs, 7 ACRs and 3 Featured articles to their credit. They are so active that this count probably needs checking since their nomination back in September. At the same time, they have somehow managed to review over 200 GANs, which is probably worthy of an "Eddy" all on its own. Naturally they are just as busy with ACR, FAC reviews and in a range of activities which I shall refer to as "advanced Wikignoming", such as becoming a minor expert on WP:NGEO. Frankly I don't know how they do it. HF is clearly an administrator in the making; meanwhile, an EotW award seems the least we can do as a community to recognize their immense contributions to both content creation and to keeping things ticking behind the scenes. Did I forget to mention that as well as all of this they are ridiculously modest?
You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

Your GA nomination of Nichols's Missouri Cavalry Regiment
[edit]The article Nichols's Missouri Cavalry Regiment you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Nichols's Missouri Cavalry Regiment for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. New Page Patrol December Newsletter
[edit]Hello Hog Farm,
- Year in review
It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.
Rank | Username | Num reviews | Log |
---|---|---|---|
1 | DannyS712 bot III (talk) | 67,552 | Patrol Page Curation |
2 | Rosguill (talk) | 63,821 | Patrol Page Curation |
3 | John B123 (talk) | 21,697 | Patrol Page Curation |
4 | Onel5969 (talk) | 19,879 | Patrol Page Curation |
5 | JTtheOG (talk) | 12,901 | Patrol Page Curation |
6 | Mcampany (talk) | 9,103 | Patrol Page Curation |
7 | DragonflySixtyseven (talk) | 6,401 | Patrol Page Curation |
8 | Mccapra (talk) | 4,918 | Patrol Page Curation |
9 | Hughesdarren (talk) | 4,520 | Patrol Page Curation |
10 | Utopes (talk) | 3,958 | Patrol Page Curation |
- Reviewer of the Year
John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.
- NPP Technical Achievement Award
As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Awarded for scrutinising useless geostubs. Geschichte (talk) 12:34, 14 December 2020 (UTC) |
- Thanks! It's been quite the effort, and there's still a lot to go. Hog Farm Bacon 17:38, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- Geschichte - I just realized that a lot of these have been translated into other wikipedias. For instance, Stevens, California, whose PROD is expiring soon, has article on four other Wikipedias: South Azerbaijani, Persian, Polish, and Chinese. Is there anything that can easily be done about that, or is it the other wikis' problems for translating that? I speak none of the four relevant languages. From a few checks, most of these seem to have been translated onto non-English wikis. Hog Farm Bacon 06:18, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
Prod instead of Afd?
[edit]I was looking at some of your Afds for minor locations. Looking at a random example Conner, California, in my opinion you could probably use the Wikipedia:Proposed deletion process on these instead of Afd. The ones that have already gone to Afd can't use it, but new things you find can use it. If you have a good reason to use Afd instead of Prod, by all means continue. But if the simpler process works, maybe use it? Jeepday (talk) 19:18, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- Jeepday I have been. See User:Hog Farm/PROD log, where I've prodded about 50 this month. I try to split it up between both processes so as to not overload either one. Hog Farm Bacon 19:28, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- An afd is more resource intensive to handle then a prod, there is no backlog at 'Category:Proposed deletion' If you believe it is an uncontroversial deletion, I would use prod or if more appropriate use Wikipedia:Redirect. These are just my thoughts, you should always do what you think is best. Jeepday (talk) 13:51, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
Mark Twain's brief service
[edit]I'm sure you're aware that Mark Twain served about two weeks in a Confederate Missouri unit that was disbanded, and later wrote "The Private History of a Campaign that Failed" loosely based on that. Which unit was he in, and why was it so short-lived? I've heard that a number of Confederate units in Missouri were disbanded due to the efforts of the Union's Nathaniel Lyon, and thought it might be one of those. RobDuch (talk·contribs) 21:01, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- RobDuch I think it was the Missouri State Guard. The MSG was Confederate-aligned but technically fought for the state of Missouri. The group's organizations was really ephemeral, so a lot of the units didn't hold together. See Battle of Roan's Tan Yard for a MSG scattering. I can try to do some research to try to pin down an exact unit once I get off work tonight. Hog Farm Bacon 21:35, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the prompt reply. RobDuch (talk·contribs) 21:36, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- RobDuch - This explains the whole situation pretty well. The group was known as the Marion Rangers, was nominally part of the MSG, was disbanded after a couple weeks in June 1861, and was disbanded due to rumors of a Union colonel in northeastern Missouri. So probably not Lyon in this case - he was a Brigadier General and was in the Boonville area at the time, so wrong part of the state. Although Lyon did do a lot of MSG chasing in southwestern Missouri until he was killed at the Battle of Wilson's Creek in August 1861. Hog Farm Bacon 05:52, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for digging that up, explains it quite well, especially the Grant connection. RobDuch (talk·contribs) 06:39, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Virginia
[edit]I noticed that you've been AfD-ing some of the more questionable places in Virginia. You might want to take a look at Template:Richmond County, Virginia. A lot of the places there are actually neighborhoods of the city of Richmond, which is in a different part of the state, but were mis-classified by GNIS as being in Richmond County. I suspect the vast majority of the neighborhoods aren't notable in the first place, but I didn't have the time to look into deleting them when I first noticed the problem, and I ended up forgetting about it until now. TheCatalyst31 Reaction•Creation 18:11, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- TheCatalyst31 I'll take a look there when I get the chance. My main concern is that AFD might not have the patience for hundreds of VA and the hundreds of CA places being dealt with at the same time. Hog Farm Bacon 21:38, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

Page mover
[edit]You can also apply for pagemove right to make Drum, Placer County, California moves yourself :) (t · c) buidhe 14:18, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
- buidhe - I've applied for pagemover at WP:PERM, since I've been having to use WP:RM/T quite a bit lately to fix stuff like that article. We'll see if I get approved. I just applied for NPR about a month ago, so hopefully they see this is a legitimate need for the right, not hat collecting, since I just got another right recently. 'Tis the Season
[edit]Enjoy the holiday season, and thanks for your work to maintain, improve and expand Wikipedia. It's been a wild year, and I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your contributions and for the role you play in making Wikipedia as good as it can be. I've greatly enjoyed interacting with you in milhist and around the 'Pedia, and you've had a truly astounding first year. Here's to another! I would say that you will do great things, but you already have-- and it's a simple matter to repeat the past :P. It was a pleasure interacting with you this year. Thanks for reviewing quite a few of my articles and tolerating a few of my reviews in return. I wish you and your loved ones all the best this December and in the years to come. Cheers, Eddie891 Talk Work 19:58, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

Page mover granted
[edit]Hello, Hog Farm. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.
Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect
is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.
Useful links:

If you do not want the page mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you, and happy editing! Eddie891 Talk Work 20:01, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

Ack
[edit]Suddenly, I have so many irons in the fire that I've lost my place. Nothing a nice cup of tea (or glass of wine) won't cure! The Logistics article is an area that interests me, but diving so deeply in to it got me completely off track of my goals to get Peer review going on, get FAR going again, and keep up with a selective amount of FACs. So, first, thanks for working on maintaining the URFA page, and second ... please ping me when everyone else is done and 1st Missouri Field Battery is ready for me to look in. I Will Forget and my priorities are all asunder! And if I miss something important re FAR or URFA, pester me? Because I have to take a detour now to submit some arb evidence ... ugh ... Bst, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:13, 26 December 2020 (UTC)
- Well, I'm about to be traveling and mostly offline for about a week, so stuff will be stalling on my end, too. I'm glad FAR has returned to life, as URFA/2020 has really shown me the truly massive extent of the problem. Hog Farm Bacon 22:34, 26 December 2020 (UTC)
- Have a good trip, and if it's OK with you then, I will backburner the 1st Missouri until after your return ... yep, I have been squawking for years that the older FA problem was dreadful, and am so grateful several editors have finally tuned in to help. I sure could not have hoped to tackle them alone. Bst, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:04, 26 December 2020 (UTC)
