Welcome to The Wikipedia Adventure!

Hi 20UF6! We're so happy you wanted to play to learn, as a friendly and fun way to get into our community and mission. I think these links might be helpful to you as you get started.

Welcome aboard! Whaddya mean, you once made a bad bluelink??? Amateur!

I see from your userpage that you enjoy puzzle hunts. If you aren't signed up already, I recommend Cracking the Cryptic. They run one each month. (I have no stake in that channel; I just like it enough to have started that article.) Best, Narky Blert (talk) 20:07, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi, thank you. I have heard about Cracking the Cryptic before but didn't look much into their stuff because I'm not really interested in sudoku and variants which they seem to focus on, but I'll go check out their hunts. 20UF6 (talk) 21:51, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
CtC is heavily sudoku and (to a lesser extent) crosswords, although they do feature some other puzzle types as well. Is this to your taste? (CtC did a solve - more made an onslaught, actually - and published a video; I never made a serious attempt.) Narky Blert (talk) 18:13, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for the recommendation, I'll take a look. I like crosswords as well (but I am not very good). eviolite (talk) 18:22, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

Close para?

Hi, I had an alert regarding this revision. Unfortunately your comment

"Hogie75's edits are okay, but a different user (User:Cornellier) added close para, which I removed"

is unclear. What is "added close para"? --Cornellier (talk) 20:49, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello and thanks for asking. Close para is an abbreviation for close paraphrasing; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing for more info. It seemed that edits you made on Tantramar Marshes and Saint Andrews, New Brunswick were closely paraphrased from https://www.mta.ca/marshland/topic1_environment/natural.htm and https://standrewsbythesea.ca/heritage/, which can be an issue under Wikipedia's copyright policy.
As an example, some specific phrases were identical in the source and the article, like "broad expanses of flat land" in the first article and "Except for Water Street, which runs along the shore, all the street names have royal or colonial associations" vs "Except for the shoreline Water Street, street names have royal or colonial associations " in the second.
As a website that is widely read and reused, Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously to protect the interests of the holders of copyright as well as those of the Wikimedia Foundation and our reusers. To make sure these sections don't constitute derivative works, they should be revised to be further separated from the reference material. Thank you and please let me know if you have further questions. eviolite (talk) 21:03, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Minister for Health and Social Services, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Eluned Morgan. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

DYK for OpenAI Codex

On 17 September 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article OpenAI Codex, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that OpenAI Codex's use of licensed code as training data has raised questions about the copyright status of machine learning models? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/OpenAI Codex. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, OpenAI Codex), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi Aye1399, I had cut down the politics section because it was confusing and didn't really make sense, not for copyright reasons. Please feel free to restore that section (but not the copied text). eviolite (talk) 11:12, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I saw a bot suggest a copyright issue and then your comments. I guess the issue is that her work experience contains <role> at <institution> at <organisation> and there's just not many ways to say it. So I thought I wrote it all in my own words, but maybe they ended up matching exactly what others said. Hmmm. I'll try again. Just to verify, it's the "professional experience" section that gave you concern? CT55555 (talk) 12:11, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

@CT55555:, yes, it was mainly that portion since it was similar to the article and PDF (and that's also what the bot caught too, I stumbled upon it at CopyPatrol. A good rule of thumb is that if you can't tell where you paraphrased some material from solely based on the wording, that's generally okay. Thanks for the understanding. eviolite (talk) 12:22, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi, and eek, I don't know how to format a reply yet, but...since this message, someone deleted that section and I think removed the copyright flag. I've since re-entered it, being very careful to avoid any chance that any order of words matches anything online. If you want to take a look, feel free. No pressure of course. Thanks for explaining above CT55555 (talk) 23:18, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi @CT55555: I'm not sure what you're seeing, but if it was this edit, you don't have to worry about it -- it was just removing the copyrighted content from the edit history of the page (so if you go there you'll see some greyed out timestamps). It's called a revision deletion, and it's typically used in regards with copyright issues. Nothing has changed to the current version of the page itself, and there aren't any problems with it right now. (And PS: if you want to make navigating talk pages easier, enable "discussion tools" in the beta features settings.) Thanks, eviolite (talk) 23:28, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Softbank Group

You are nothing more than a demented, ignorant vandal. Your actions greatly hamper Wikipedia's mission, vision and purpose. Take care. Methionylthreonyl... (talk) 12:14, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

@Methionylthreonyl...: Please do not assume bad faith or cast personal attacks and aspersions. I have no vested interest in SoftBank like you seemingly do and only stumbled upon it after a bot marked one of your copy-pastes as a possible copyright violation. I just reverted your changes because it was a major change done without any consensus which had copyright and factual issues. If you would like to communicate civilly on the issue, please do it at the section I have already directed you to at Talk:SoftBank Corporation. Thanks. eviolite (talk) 12:28, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Perfect numbers

We use singular for articles but plural for categories, e.g. Prime number versus Category:Prime numbers and other subcategories of Category:Integer sequences. Is it OK with you if I move Category:Perfect number to Category:Perfect numbers? There is usually a process at WP:CFD but WP:G7 can be invoked if you agree as the sole author at the moment. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:20, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi @PrimeHunter:, you can move that as well as Category:Mersenne prime which I created. I had followed the guideline on WP:CAT that topic categories should be singular, but I do agree it makes more sense for these to be plural. (Just a note, now that I've linked it I see that Category:Perfect numbers had been deleted before due to scope concerns and a lack of articles, but I hope that the articles I've added already is enough?) Thanks, eviolite (talk) 03:24, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
It also says "Names of set categories should be plural". The category isn't for specific perfect numbers but I think "set" applies well here. Other subcategories of Category:Integer sequences are plural. I will make the moves. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:32, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
@PrimeHunter: I see, that makes sense, I thought the "set category" definition would apply more to say a cat with 3, 7, 31 (number), 127 (number), etc in it but yeah I understand now (and for consistency). Thanks for the explanation and move, cheers. eviolite (talk) 03:40, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
I have completed the moves. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:41, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

Terrorism In India

Hello Eviolite I undid your edit in Terrorism in India Your concern "completely unnecessary addition of 50+ empty sections" is completely valid but there wont remain empty sections. I will be filling all of them today. Finding all incidents of terrorism is very tough and that's why I wrote them within their respective states yesterday and will be writing their explanation today itself. Kindly understand that completing such a big article isn't possible within a day. I will take care of your concern.TheUniversalEditor (talk) 03:55, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

@TheUniversalEditor: Right now, the table of contents of the article is extremely long as a result of this sectioning. I do not believe you need a section on every single terrorist group in India, as well as every single attack. I believe the article could be presented a lot better if you used lists and tables to represent the data instead. See how Terrorism in the United States does it: the attacks just get a brief 1 or 2 sentence description and are presented in a table or list instead. Thanks, eviolite (talk) 11:34, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Date formats per MOS:DATEFORMAT by script

Per MOS:DATEFORMAT, the 'yyyy-mm-dd' format should be used "only in limited situations where brevity is helpful", and per WP:CITEVAR, a consistent citation style should be used. Prior to my edit, the Gao Yan (politician) article used both 'Day Month Year' and 'yyyy-mm-dd' formats, see this as evidence. My edit has brought the article into a consistent style. Hi, you just reverted my edit to Cup and Ring Mark

I actually gave a reason at length on the talk page before making the edit, but then forgot to put any explanation in the edit itself. I will try again in a moment if that's OK. (Don't want to get into an accidental edit war!)  Card Zero  (talk) 19:42, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

@Card Zero: No worries - I was just confused by the deletion of what seemed like a sizable amount of text without any explanation. Reading it again I do agree that the sentence doesn't really relate to the article and have therefore reverted myself (so now I've removed it again). Thanks, eviolite (talk) 19:45, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Dumping in Dixie

On 2 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Dumping in Dixie, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that Robert D. Bullard has emerged as the "father of environmental justice" since the publication of his 1990 book, Dumping in Dixie? Thank you

Thank you for taking a look at Astri Aasen and your comments. You've helped make the encyclopedia better by checking for accuracy, and ensuring we're covering women and their works in a fair way, proportional to their entire careers. If you're ever looking for more women to write, I've found that thematic books about women in a certain geography of a certain occupation are helpful - the article was written because of a chapter in Modern women artists in the Nordic countries, 1900–1960, released in 2021. (And thankfully, most or all of the other women mentioned there already have articles!) Thanks again, and hope to see you around soon and often. Urve (talk) 03:34, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

@Urve: Thanks for the kind message. I'll see what I can do, though it's not easy for me to get access to books. And of course, thank you for diligently writing about these important and impactful women. eviolite (talk) 03:43, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Wordle

On 25 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Wordle, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the viral online word game Wordle (instance pictured) was originally created just for the developer and his partner to play? Exception to Wordle gray color rule

I verified the behavior through experimentation. If you use duplicate letters in a guess when the solution only contains one, one of them will be yellow or green and the extra letter will be gray.

This is true on both the British (https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/) and American versions (https://wordlegame.org/).

Maybe we could leave the information in, but delete the reference?

Becalmed (talk) 18:22, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

@Becalmed: Hi and welcome to Wikipedia. The main issue with including that is the policy on original research and verifiability which say that everything must be cited to reliable sources and that editors shouldn't do their own synthesis. Deleting the reference would be even worse as we wouldn't even have anywhere, reliable or not, to attribute that to. Thanks, eviolite (talk) 18:50, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
@Eviolite: Hi, I reentered the information with a reference to Vulture instead of Nerds Chalk. I hope this is okay. Vulture is part of New York Magazine. It is marked as reliable on the Wikipedia perennial sources list.
@Becalmed: looks good, thanks! eviolite (talk) 12:48, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Rollback

Hi Eviolite. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle or RedWarn.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! FASTILY 22:42, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Article Rewrited

Hello! I wanted to let you know, i rewrited the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Xhezair_Elezi. Please review and let me know if there is anything I need to revise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SalihiJunuz (talkcontribs) 17:31, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi SalihiJunuz and thank you for your enthusiasm towards Wikipedia. I originally declined your submission because statements like "one of the greatest singers", which are still in the draft, are not neutral and sound like promotional puffery towards the subject. I am also not sure if the references are enough to pass the notability criteria for musicians. I will let another reviewer decide to accept or decline the article since I already reviewed it once and it may be helpful to get a second opinion. eviolite (talk) 18:09, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

I am a grizzly biologist editing this page. Please restore my edit and utilize the talk page if you want to discuss this page. 174.50.170.71 (talk) 21:00, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

My apologies, I only intended to revert the presumably unintended edit of adding '''Bold text''' to the article; I've restored the text you added. Though, be aware that Wikipedia requires all information to be verifiable and referenced to reliable sources rather than original research. eviolite (talk) 21:03, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

hello i don't know how create references with two videos found on ytube you have links can you help me? thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Evaristopos (talkcontribs) 10:16, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

@Evaristopos: Youtube is not a reliable source and concluding that she knows languages based on videos would be original research. If there are any secondary sources like news articles say that she can speak those languages, add them by pressing the "Cite" button in the editor toolbar. eviolite (talk) 20:55, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Eviolote, You removed the link I placed and I apologise if I misunderstood but.... Iain A. Maciver of Strathendry has been running a Clan Iver group for some 30 years and given that you have mention of it in your article I felt we should allow people seeking information on the Clan Iver to find the website we are creating for it. Currently, the website is under construction but it will have articles on MacIvers, Mcivors, Mcivers, MacIvors, Ivars, Iverssons and all the other variations that claim the clan. Some of the articles in the latest publication include current (e.g. an article memorial plaque for Hugh McIver MM + bar and VC), some are historic (e.g. articles on the Austin Iver, the MacIver Liner Araby, Hugh McIvor the botanist). The website and society are NFP entities and have been run in this fashion for 30 years. I read through your information on links and I don't think we will contravene any items, I also feel we may give a benefit to you in a small way. N.B: would suggest similar citation included on the other name pages such as McIver, McIvor, McIver etc. Let me know how we can proceed please, Regards, Macoverdue (talk) 21:18, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Macoverdue. I apologise for the confusion, but on Wikipedia, we avoid having external links in the body of the article, instead putting them in a section at the bottom if the link is appropriate. I would recommend doing that once you have some information on the website (not right now, since the website just says "stay tuned" and serves no aid to readers yet.) If you need help with that feel free to ask me. I would avoid including the link on pages about surnames, though, as it sounds like the website would only indirectly give information on the surname, mostly focusing on the clan. Happy editing! eviolite (talk) 21:26, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanks Eviolite, Points noted and I will seek advice when the website gets the "Publish!" command from the castle :-). Hopefully, will speak again soon and identify the best way to progress, Regards, Macoverdue (talk) 21:33, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
  • Christmas Island AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
  • Philadelphia GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
  • SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
  • United Nations Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi the soundtrack article in the film jeans is pointless. Wikipedia doesn’t accept pointless articles right so that’s why I redirected? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:8F8:1825:2E6F:6455:AF4:AD40:1121 (talk) 13:48, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

My apologies, I see you have restored the content in the main article; I had only seen the edit in which you removed the "Track listing" header and did not intend to revert the content you merged into the article. I don't have an opinion on whether the soundtrack article is "pointless" or not and think it's probably fine to blank and redirect it as you have done. eviolite (talk) 13:57, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Dear Eviolite, You did not accept our new article Julian Shulmeister (March 30) due to the reason "This submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources." The article is about an author of books about the Holocaust in Western Ukraine. We expected that the Bibliography can be enough as a reliable source for the article. Could you please clarify what can be considered a reliable source in such a case? Thank you in advance for your support, Aleksandr

Sashalvov (talk) 17:17, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

@Sashalvov: In order to prove that a person is notable, we need significant coverage in multiple reliable, independent sources. His own books are not independent since they were written by himself. Also, we need reliable sources that verify the information in the biography.
In short, you should find multiple independent sources that talk about him and provide information about his life, in order to back up the information in the article. eviolite (talk) 17:21, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
