Happy New Year! Here is the latest edition of the WikiProject GA Newsletter! Dr. Cash (talk) 03:57, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

A new round of Collaboration of the Fortnight is about to begin!

The current University Collaborations of the Month are
Ohio State University
&
Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University

Every month two B-, C- or Start-Class higher education-related articles are chosen for you to improve. Be bold!
This COTM is organized by WikiProject Higher Education. (vote for future collaborations or see past collaborations)
This collaboration is effective: May 20, 2011 — June 20, 2011 until someone updates it.
Pick the next WikiProject Higher Education COTM!

Yes, it's that time again. New articles have been added. I finished this process early because I'll be running around packing and sorting out Friday's weather patterns so I can get back to Florida in time. Just in case things don't go well, at least I don't sabotage the COTF program. Anyways, the three new articles will start on Friday and you may edit the three technically still in COTF (although I've placed the collaboration-past tags already) or you may start editing early.

Here's something I want to try, start treating it as a peer review. Start by skimming through the article, making sure the article fits our article guidelines. Then review for content: any copyvio, notability issues, reference listings, following the Manual of Style.

And here's something even more radical. See if you can attract authors currently maintaining the different COTF articles to join our WikiProject and better yet, our COTF project. I found when I started this program, jumping ships and editing other universities' articles was a big leap, but it's been very fun so far. I'd like to see more people actively participating.

Let's start off the new year the right way. I want to see those articles in GAR and FAN soon. I was sad we didn't have enough people working on the Harvard article to push it to FA or GA. But no matter, let's start fresh and begin! Hope everyone had a good holiday vacation (and if you didn't get a vacation, I hope you got a lot of double time). - Jameson L. Request for copyedit

Sitakunda Upazila has gone through a rigorous peer review that dealt mostly in content (thanks to Amartya). Then it was put forward as a WP:GAN, but was withdrawn by Miranda as she disagreed very much with the quality of the copy. I have formally applied to the LOCE Request page, but it has long backlog and it's always nicer to work with individuals. The article has almost no content issues (apart from a few redlinks) and is very stable at the point. I myself am a lousy copywriter, but I will be there to meet you every need in developing the article (that includes answering questions, filling in gaps, clarifying information and everything in that line)... I promise. I have high hopes for the article. As far as I can see, all that stands between an FA status and this article are "brilliant prose" and a few, really few, areas of content improvement. Your deletion of the kosher products section in the Starbucks article.

I feel that the kosher products paragraph in the Starbucks page should remain. You wrote that you deleted this paragraph because it cited kosherstarbucks.com as it's resource. I have researched many sites about kosher at starbucks, and found this site to be quoted as reliable by many kosher observant people. Example: (Begin at comment 20): www.kosherblog.net
Additionally, There is an extensive FAQ page there where they list the sources of the information. I don't think it's fair to completely omit the kosher status of starbucks products from the article, as there are many kosher observant people interested in this information.
If you could find other sources that would be great, but I don't think deleting the subject in any way improves the article. Please contact me to explain your position.

An article which you started, or significantly expanded, Richard C. McCarty, was selected for DYK!

Updated DYK query On January 16, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Richard C. McCarty, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Thanks for your contributions! Nishkid64 (talk) 16:33, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about the late notice. My 21st birthday was on Wednesday and I was pretty much sick all day Thursday, so I wasn't able to get a chance to do this. Anyways, three new articles.

Note: I didn't place the Portal on the ENT because I felt that the portal was more like a collection of articles rather than an actual article focused on the university. This semi-goes against our original goals of the COTF in which university articles would get attention first before handling the subarticles. (Portal is more like a collection of articles). Anyways, if you believe it should be back on the ENT, I'll make sure it'll be Round 6's ENT, so if you do feel it should, talk on the COTF talk page.

Oh yeah, I hope the coding works. I'm using WP:AWB to do signpost delivery by "Append Text"...hoping that it'll work. If this comes out horribly, please let me know if I haven't already fixed the error(s).

Any personal questions regarding the management and coding of this program should be directed to me talk page. Thank you for your understanding. - Jameson L. Tai talkcontribs 09:00, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Editor Nominated Topic King's College London
B-Class Improvement Drive Clemson University

I've taken advice to purposefully scramble the articles so they must be multi-nation (so we don't get complaints that it's too US-centric). This time we've got an article in UK, one in US, and one in HKG. Hope this will suffice. As always, please let me know if there are any questions. - Jameson L. OK... so Columbia's a B-class article looking at FA nomination. Let's see if we can push it through FAN! (And good luck to anyone who speaks Thai and can translate the Thai version of Chulalongkorn University article into English) See you all 5 days before tax day (for those of us who are US taxpayers)! - Jameson L. I read your comments on Ken Griffey Jr.'s talk page, and decided to change the second section to a much more neutral and statistics-driven one.

I wish to be considered for any committees/groups involved in the expansion of (or rewriting of) articles involving MLB and baseball-related articles. Is this something I just do on my own or may I contact anyone at Wikipedia?

Thanks so much for rephrasing that tackily worded addition about his marriage by a previous editor. When I saw it yesterday (just before I went to bed), I literally groaned. Lo and behold! When I went to fix it today, you'd already done it, as well as further excellent copyediting and referencing. Much appreciated! Best, Voceditenore (talk) 11:19, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Alexander Hamilton SOS

Hi, you seem to be a reasonable and knowledgeable editor. Perhaps you can help me. I am trying to figure out how to infuse as many good faith editors into the Alexander Hamilton article as I can. I have put a request into an American History Taskforce, but no one is home, apparantly. I also put in a request at the Biography Wikiproject page. Again--no response so far. Do you know of any groups, or any talented editors who might be willing to dedicate some time and effort to this article? The Hamilton article needs a masive infusion of new blood. What little I had to offer up is about gone. Any help or advice you could offer would be appreciated. AdRem (talk) 21:03, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

P.S. Neat picture of the day! AdRem (talk) 21:05, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Could you comment on our dispute over Newburgh, where AdRem is insisting on saying something his source does not say, and which (as far as I can tell) no one else does. The issues may be clearly enough laid out at Talk:Alexander_Hamilton#Another_PMA_tag_-_.22oblique_rebuke.22_.22suspected.22_etc. for someone who hasn't looked into the matter to follow. If not, please ask questions. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 15:02, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice, Esrever. For the record, my source said exactly what I said--the editor above is my constant abuser, and has a problem with telling the whole truth sometimes. In any case, I abandoned the article for a few days, as it had gotten far too heated, and I lost my cool. The dispute seems to have attracted a few temporary editors, and been kindasorta worked out in the meantime. However, the article is still in need of a huge influx of editing help. This experience has soured me on Wikipedia a bit, and I no longer have the energy or the time to respond to an endless train of half truths and untruths from this guy. I think I will try to help the article primarily by trying to get more help for it, since this one editor has a very fringe view, and thus a surge of editors can only serve to drastically improve the article. As I mentioned, I have already put up notices for help for the article everywhere I can think of, but if you know of anywhere else, please, please help spread the word. Thanks again. AdRem (talk) 00:43, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello

I have made a minor edit to the Vanderbilt page. I have been working on updating several notable early 20th century gay novel pages. Would you be interested in reviewing my updates? For now I am merely trying to get most of them out of stub status, so I think it is a bit much to request a formal peer review. Let me know your thoughts. Npd2983 (talk) 00:10, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the offer to review a novel page. Check out Strange Brother and let me know what you think. Thank you. Npd2983 (talk) 02:10, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

I have updated The City and the Pillar in major ways. If you feel so inclined, read it over and provide feedback. Thank you... Npd2983 (talk) 19:49, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Starbucks reversion

Hello. I reverted your reversion of a few sentences that I added about the protests about the new Starbucks logo.

You justified this reversion by citing lack of "notability." Well, WP:N only refers to the notability requirement for the topics of articles. So, if I were to create an article about the boycott, then, yes, that is not notable. But, that's not what I did. I added a perfectly encyclopedic mention of it to a relevant article.

As an aside, I think this protest is stupid. But, if it is getting this amount of international news coverage, then it is worthy of wikipedia. So, please do not remove it again without establishing consensus on the talk page. --TheZachMorrisExperience (talk) 02:26, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

But I don't think it's "perfectly encyclopedic"—I think it's trivia, plain and simple. But I've indicated that on the talk page. Esrever (klaT) 04:31, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Copyedit request

Hello, I am contacting you because you're a member of the League of Copyeditors. Would you be interested in taking a look at Highlander: The Series (season 1) which is currently a Featured List Candidate ? Rankings in lead

So what is "highly selective"? Is it 10% admissions rate? 20%? Does it imply a threshold for an average SAT score? Does it actually mean that tuition and financial aid are structured in a way to "select" only those students most able to afford it? It's the epitome of a weasel word and should never be used in the lead of an encyclopedia article, regardless of its prevalence in the practice of admissions or university administrivia.

Rankings are not useful at all and should never be in a lead. Space in the lead is too precious for summarizing everything about the history, campus, organization, enrollments, research activity, and alumni to waste sentences expounding on how one magazine's problematic formulation of an unquantifiable concept of prestige or quality should override the aforementioned information.
