DYK hook reviews
I'm back after having limited time within the past week, and there are a few reviews that I was hoping you could take a look at.
- Template:Did you know nominations/Barbeque Nation has its most recent hook proposed by me, so I'm out of the running. There were some issues about the article and its hooks seeming promotional in nature. I think the latest is okay, but it needs an independent eye.
- Template:Did you know nominations/Capture of Mazatlán – can you please take a look at this one? Either I'm missing something, or there's an aggregation of information going into the hook that isn't directly supported by any of the sources, but I think both Laura and I have done as much as we can. I'm sorry I didn't notice the reply sooner; I was away with limited access to the internet over the past week.
- Template:Did you know nominations/Domaine Ponsot – second opinion requested here.
Many thanks! —BlueMoonset (talk) 05:17, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- Looking. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:20, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you. Sorry the first one you took didn't go as planned; I've done my bit to address Laura's concerns. Here's another one I just discovered has gone unaddressed in over a week; the original reviewer seems to have gone missing:
Redirects decision
Hi!
I did not like your decision of redirecting many Indian songs on AfDs. I have started a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Film/Indian_cinema_task_force#Redirected and you are needed to join. I am using "needed" and not "welcome" because we would not like to see people interfere in the decisions taken after say 20 days or so. (Speaking from experience. Admins and Americans and Europeans mostly mind special decisions taken for Indian projects.) §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 07:48, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- I've replied there. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:04, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- And btw, "Americans and Europeans mostly mind special decisions taken for Indian projects." makes very little sense in this situation as I'm neither, and it's uncited to a discussion / place which conclusively indicates this. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:15, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

DYK
I wouldn't normally solicit a DYK review, but in this case it is a time sensitive issue. I expanded Dan Oates x10 and nominated it for DYK here. I worry that it will get lost in the large number of Olympic DYK's. There also needs to be some time to discuss the hook. On another note, the hook should probably be placed in a queue that is on the main page when America is awake since it is most relevant there. NY 12:00 is best; is there a way to ensure this? Crisco, please do consider my comment re: Erinn Walters (and there's a few more like that on the DYK page). DYK rules exclude lists, and in my opinion the main chunk of the article text should be rendered as prose. That's a big deal, cause she writes a ton of them like that. Has this ever been brought up? I think this should be dealt with. Drmies (talk) 02:01, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

DYK prep 4
Crisco, I noticed there were only seven hooks in Prep 4 and was about to stuff in Rachel Bugg, who had been delayed due to issues with the article but it would be nice to have her in a set that isn't Australia nighttime if possible. I then realized that there were eight articles listed in the credits. It appears that Bronwen Watson (another Australian) has been removed from the hooks list but not from the credits.
Since I don't know what you intended—whether you'd found a problem with Watson like I had with Bugg that needed fixing, or whether she just dropped between the cracks—I don't want to proceed unless I get an all clear from you. If Watson reappears, I'll know that Bugg will have to wait. Thanks! BlueMoonset (talk) 06:07, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
A little later: On second thought, I'm just going to restore Watson where she had been before the glitch occurred. If she should be removed, there's plenty of time to do so later, and this way there's no risk of someone else coming along and adding an eighth hook, which would be a bit of a mess. Sorry for not thinking it through more thoroughly the first time. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:20, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

- ? Neither do I. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:14, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Crisco 1492, can you please take a look at this one? The sourcing looks a little dubious to me—a website purporting to be reproducing a text which is being used as a reliable source for that text—and I'm not at all sure about the website. I think the reviewer may have been too accepting of the author's explanation, at least for DYK purposes.
Also, with all due deference to Laura, the Paralympics are weeks away, and we're having a bit of a squeeze right now on regular reviews. If you do have review time available, perhaps you could turn it to ordinary DYK articles for a few days to help build up the supply of approved ones. Thank you. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:31, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- I weighed in at PTB and yes, there are still issues. Regarding reviews, I generally don't stock so any reviews will come when I have an article to nominate. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:15, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for PTB. I didn't know about your reviewing process; in my case, I have enough stocked to keep me going for a couple of months at my usual slow rate of production (assuming I pick up again next month). While I have you here ;-), can you please take a look at Template:Did you know nominations/Lighthouses in Gibraltar? It's a very odd duck: the List of lighthouses text section seems to be a lot of detail about sources, and not very much about the lighthouses themselves except for which source lists they were on. Is this useful information, or inappropriate detail? I'm wondering whether there's really enough here to make a DYKable list article, or if it's one that doesn't have enough actual meat to qualify. I've already questioned the History section (lifted from a single lighthouse article, the one that ran the other day with the picture that Hawkeye7 noted was being reused here), which is the basis of the hook; once that's gone, I'm wondering what of interest is left. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:31, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- Commented. Luckily I have a little experience with lists. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:37, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

- Thanks again. I didn't even remember (mind you, my regular editing only began a little over a year ago) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:47, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- In my case, regular editing began a little under a year ago. It's been quite a year since then, though nothing compared to yours. I need to regain my balance between DYK and article edits; it's been completely skewed the past couple of months. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:15, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, dealing with the non-article creation aspects of DYK can suck the soul out of someone (and time). I've been focusing on articles recently, as I got a book which has introduced me to a fascinating world which is sadly poorly covered. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:26, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Do we have a policy or guideline about this sort of addition to the deletion discussion?
User:Penyulap/UBX/PenGreen1 seems like a sort of inappropriate template to add to a formal process. Maybe I'm oversensitive, but this looks to me a subtle form of lobbying. It's definitely a slippery slope addition; if we start down this road, such processes may be overwhelmed with visuals and cues when they're supposed to stay inside the topic. Are you aware of a guide about such contributions inside AfDs? BusterD (talk) 00:50, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- UBX has nothing about it, but I agree it looks like lobbying. I'll warn the magician. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:57, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments, I have begun to address them. I don't understand what you mean by "the period should be replaced by a semi-colon (not a full sentence) and the "i" made miniscule.". Which period (there are two), and what letter i? And what does it mean in wiki context to "make miniscule"? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 16:49, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Could you please explain ...
You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Muhammed al-Darbi. You didn't leave an explanation for the reasoning behind your closure.
I wrote to you before -- about your closures of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Amy Bechtold and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/David Conn (judge). You didn't explain those closures either. When I tried to discuss these closures with you, you described my comments as too long, didn't read.
Frankly, your comments seemed to indicate you barely skimmed the arguments in the discussions -- skipping completely over those you didn't already agree with.
In the Muhammad al-Darbi Afd five contributors weighed in.
- 1 delete all
- 2 keep all
- 1 redirect all
- 1 delete or merge all
Did you regard this as a clear majority favoring delete? I suggested to you before that in all Afd where arguments were offered for different positions it was important for the closing administrator to leave a concluding statement that explained their closure.
I suggested, in the Afd, that group Afds were only appropriate when the articles in question all triggered the same concern. In this Afd the nominator didn't actually read the articles in question -- they claimed all the articles in question were of Guantanamo captives -- when several weren't. Participants in the discussion took the nominator's misinformation at face value, and they didn't read the articles for themselves, either. I was frankly surprised you didn't take this into account. Geo Swan (talk) 08:38, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- Several editors have warned you about misrepresentation and misquoting. By my count there are
- 2 delete all (you forgot the nominator)
- 1 keep all
- 1 redirect all
- 1 delete or merge all
- If you believe that they could/should be redirected, feel free to make the proper redirects. However, consensus was clear that a keep was out of the question. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:51, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- How would you characterize the arguments in those posts? Consensus should not be calculated solely by the balance of votes. I was the commenter in that article and while I was on the fence about the notability of each individual, the inappropriate bundling and other issues with the nomination and deletion process in other BigXRay AfD's suggested a WP:TRAINWRECK was in the works.
- Can you address my other concern with WP:R#HARMFUL and WP:R#KEEP with preserving the useful page history and undelete these pages before a redirect is performed? --Joshuaism (talk) 14:22, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- The close was based mainly on the quality, not quantity, of !votes. All subjects presented had minimal coverage except relating to a single event (per WP:BLP1E, that's not enough). Several editors have looked for sources, and Bushranger indicated that the subjects probably failed 1E from the getgo.
- Regarding the redirect question, whatever non-trivial history there was is not used to provide attribution for merged articles. As the delete !votes were the strongest, it is clear that consensus was the content needn't be on the encyclopedia in the form it had there. If you or another editor wish for an undelete to merge content into a "fooians held in Guantanamo" article, I'll be glad to provide it so long as the page is redirected afterwards. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:38, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- Please do so and contact me when the undelete is complete so that I may perform the redirect. Thank you! --Joshuaism (talk) 16:12, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Merge
You suggested merging this article at AfD: Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Oscar_Flight_UFO/Missile_Incident. No one has done so yet, because there are no reliable sources to do so. Do you have any suggestions for how to proceed? IRWolfie- (talk) 15:11, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- A line, maybe, if that much can be confirmed. Something like indicating that "allegations that a UFO incident took place" — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:16, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- I basically agree with Bushranger and Buckshot: just a mention is enough. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:17, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

your assistance please
You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Comparison of Iraq War to the Algerian War. For this article you provided an explanation of your closure, writing "It looks full of OR and, unless multiple works have been published doing an in-depth histiography of the subject, is not a viable encyclopedic article."
WP:BEFORE recommends nominators to check to see if references support the notability of the topic of the article, without regard to whether the article is currently in a weak state.
A brief search confirms that this topic has been covered in multiple works. You said you think those works have to have done an "in-depth histiography". You don't say why. Did it occur to you that coverage of the Pentagon arranging special viewings of the famous film The Battle of Algiers, so Iraqi war planners could learn from the Algerian War, is just as valid substantiation that comparisons between the two wars was the subject of serious discussion?

My RfA
Thank you very much for participating in my RfA. I appreciate that you took the time and effort to assess my contribution history, something that most people couldn't be bothered to do.
Oh, and just as a side note, I hope you didn't feel badgered or irritated by my response to your oppose. I had felt compelled to post a link to the "Sherlock" comment in my answer to Q3, for reasons of disclosure, which is where Mysterytrey originally picked it up from. I looked at it after the fact and actually felt kind of bad, sort of a "holy crap, I didn't mean for it to come across that way!" moment. I opted against posting on the talk page of whoever initially added that material to the article, in the off chance that they did not see the edit summary (and thus, no harm no foul). I don't mean to sound as if I'm above saying things that can be construed as being offensive, but I'm generally a pretty easy person to get along with. Hopefully your impression of me wasn't permanently soured, but if it was, I won't hold it against you. If ever you see me around, don't worry — I won't bite. ;)
Anyways, take care. =)

Copyrighted pictures?
Hello,
I've been referred to you by another editor who said you are very good with image copyright.
If we look at this from Wikimedia Israel:
The spokesperson unit of the Israel Defense Forces began publishing its photographs online (on its Flickr account) under a free Creative Commons license. This move follows a long and protracted process of legislation promoted by WMIL in discussions in the Science and Technology Committee of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. While legislation meant to free any work created by the Israeli government of copyright has not yet been accepted, the move by the IDF is certainly motivated by it. Hundreds of IDF Spokesperson images are now in use on Wikimedia projects. WMIL released a widely circulated press release condoning the move by the IDF spokesperson.
Now, a recent attack (2012 Egyptian-Israeli border attack) could use a photo of the attack, and such photos are provided on the IDF Spokesperson website. HOWEVER, these photos have NOT been uploaded to the IDF's Flickr account. I'm wondering whether I would still be allowed to upload these pictures from their official website, even though they're not on their official Flickr account.
Some other useful information - on many of the pictures (if not all, I just havent' seem them all) uploaded here on Wikipedia by the IDF, there is a notice by an administrator below that says the administrator reviewed it to make sure it was on the IDF's official Flickr account... I'm not sure though whether it would still be OK to have it on their official website, and perhaps they only checked to see if it was on their Flickr account to make sure it was legitimately the IDF.
So... Would I be allowed to publish pictures of the attack from the IDF official website that are NOT on the IDF's official Flickr account?
Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it. --Activism1234 02:17, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
- The IDF images on Flickr that you linked to do not allow commercial reuse, which is necessary to be used on Wikipedia (we aren't commercial, but people who reuse our content sometimes are). FAC question
Thanks for your review and leaned support at 3 May Const article. I have another article that recently passed milhist A-class that I'd like to push towards a FA, Stanisław Koniecpolski. Do you think I should wait for when the 3 May is passed, or can I have two FACs at the same time? Time-wise, I should be able to handle both, it's more of a "are there enough reviewers" issue. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 20:15, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
- Per FAC: "An editor is allowed to be the sole nominator of only one article at a time; however, two nominations may be allowed if the editor is a co-nominator on at least one of them." So, in other words, guidelines say no. However, occasionally one of the delegates will give permission to run more than one at the same time. I suggest asking Ian Rose or Graham Colm — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:05, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

CPJ International Press Freedom Awards
Okay, I wrote a lengthier intro section for CPJ International Press Freedom Awards--I'm at about 3250 characters. Take a look and let me know what you think. I've looked at a few samples, but still don't have a great feel for how these usually read. So I'm happy to do whatever more revision is needed. Otherwise feel free to go ahead and co-nom at your leisure. (I'll keep participating, but you're far more used to the process/paperwork involved.)
Incidentally, I also wrote to CPJ directly to see if they have images of their awards banquet we can use as another illustration, or at least to give us a broader choice of individual winners. I like the ones you've already posted, though, so no need to wait for them before moving forward.
Thanks for this offer! Should be fun. Khazar2 (talk) 03:54, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
- Alright, I'll bump it up with references (apparently it's not all on one page :-( ). It may be nice to have a brief descriptor of what they got it for. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:00, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, I can do that--it's the sort of repetitive task I excel at. Just do one to give me an example format to follow (e.g., should each person be footnoted? Or each year?) I can handle the descriptors, too, though CPJ doesn't always name just one incident in giving the award. Khazar2 (talk) 04:03, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
- I just added one in. No need to archive if you don't want to, but I find it easier to maintain. The only issue with having information on what they did in the table is that it will have to be individually cited (hence why I suggest not adding it yet) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:12, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Visual Arts Center of Richmond
Hi! I understand that you were the administrator who deleted the page for the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, and I was hoping I could get a copy restored so that I might edit it and fix the problems with the page. I had worked on it for the better part of a day, went to bed, and when I woke up to work on the page some more, it was gone. I understand that there was a problem with a quote I had included not meeting the criteria for how to cite a source, and am happy to delete the quote. i also intended to work on making the piece read more "neutral" and had researched sources to cite a lot more of the information.
I spent a lot of time on this page (my first ever) and would appreciate the chance to improve the page rather than have it deleted without that opportunity.
Thanks!

- Hi Moxfulder, I'm sorry but I can't do that. The article was deleted for copyvio as it was too close to the source material (in places the exact same). Copyright law does not allow an exact copying and pasting of copyrighted material, and the VACoR has full copyright over their text. You're welcome to start from scratch, assuming you paraphrase the source better. For example, rather than use a quote from the source you could has something like "The Visual Arts Center of Richmond, located in the Fan District of Richmond, Virginia, is an arts center dedicated to improving community awareness of visual arts." and so on. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:08, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Removal of Wikileaks revelations from Indonesia page
Hi Crisco, I just wondered why you had removed the addition of Wikileaks revelations to the Indonesia page entry 'foreign relations' section. Primary sources were provided. The cables have been a huge point in modern international politics, and I think worthy of inclusion. They provide an insight into what the US Government really think about the current administrations handling of one of the most pressing domestic issues facing Indonesia - that of the independence struggle in West Papua.
- You should discuss major, potentially POV, changes such as that on the talk page. In an article where Srivijaya gets a sentence, a whole paragraph on US positions is clearly undue. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:50, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Screenshot photos
Sorry to bother you again. If a news channel streams a broadcast online (in my case, France24) and I take a screenshot of it, am I allowed to upload it to Wikipedia (I assume as my own work)? Or is it copyrighted?
NOTE: The photo is not to provide info on what France24 station looks like. Rather, it's a scene shot by one of France24's cameras.
Thanks! --Activism1234 01:31, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
- France 24 would own the underlying copyright, with your screenshot as a derivative work. As France 24's content is not under a free license, it is unsuitable for Wikipedia. Sorry! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:20, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
- Interesting. Thanks! No worries. --Activism1234 05:32, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Rajbir Dujaniya
Hi I created the above page.. which was nominated for speedy deletion by Zaldax (talk) on 02:34, 8 August 2012 (UTC) 16:59,
And before I could react ( i am not that frequent to wikipedia) you deleted on same day (8 August 2012 Crisco 1492 deleted page Talk:Rajbir Dujaniya )
I think it is a bit unfair that I or others were not given chance to clarify on the matter.. and if I remember correctly I have also given links to prove his notability as per guidelines in earlier deletion notice (a link to his song on itune and one other site which i dont remember now but had link on that page). So please look into the matter and undo it.. Thanks Amit Амит अमित ਅਮਿਤ (talk) (talk) 12:58, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Imdabs, I've looked over the article that was deleted and at the time it was deleted it didn't have a clear indication of importance. That being said, it's possible that you have further sources. Would you like me to recreate the article for you in your user space for you to work on? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:50, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Crisco 1492,
thanks for responding, sorry but i don't know how this user space thing work, if it needs me to find more links for proving his notability than i can work on it, as there were many links from the recommended sites about his work(as he has given couple of major hits for Bollywood movies as main singer).. but if i am needed to find more about his personal life etc it would be difficult as even i am not able to find much for some reason. even Google returns mostly results on his work rather than about himself.. i do suspect he is facing some sort of media blackout.. i have created this page in the hope someone in the know would add Amit Амит अमित ਅਮਿਤ (talk) (talk) 22:56, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
Philip Tilden
Thanks for the nomination and for cleaning up the links. I'm completely at sea on those since my Reflinks Tool stopped working. Should he see it, I think Tim will find aspects of Tilden's life rather funny. KJP1 (talk) 14:39, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
Hello there - there's a bit of a revert war with an IP editor at this article. They seem intent on restoring some dodgy material, and removing categories and other good info in the process. It's just going back and forth between the IP and other editors. Can it be semi-protected? --Merbabu (talk) 21:04, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
