Dear Crisco 1492, well done on receiving this Imperial Napoleonic triple crown for work on Indonesian articles. Well done! Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 09:30, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Top and bottom pics at FC

Hi, lovely pics as usual; but I wonder whether there's a reason not to make the bottom one bigger; the top one, I guess, is about max for its res already, fair enough. Tony (talk) 09:50, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Sculpture photos

The Mrs., the Little, and I are about to go to a county-owned sculpture park, and I was thinking about getting some images for Wikipedia, and maybe creating stubs for a few of the better-known works. If I take a photograph of a sculpture, does the copyright belong to me or the sculptor? -- Khazar2 (talk) 13:49, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

  • If you do, verify that the sculptures either a) were first publicly displayed before 1923 or b) were first publicly displayed between 1923 and 1971 without a copyright notice, as the US doesn't have freedom of panorama for sculptures. That being said, have fun! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:52, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
Will do! Thanks for the guidance-- Khazar2 (talk) 14:00, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
Fair use obviously applies in all other cases. Ryan Vesey 14:07, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
Applies for photos of the sculptures, or of the park generally? Khazar2 (talk) 14:16, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
  • I'm not entirely positive on whether you could release a general image of the park under creative commons or not. I would assume you could if one of many sculptures in the image was copyrighted (as de minimis) but if all of the sculptures in the image are copyrighted that would need to be fair use as well. The statues are an integral part of the picture, not part of the background. Ryan Vesey 14:34, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
  • I think that it depends on the percentage of the image occupied by the statues as well. Suffice it to say, an actual image would be easier to discuss then a theoretical one. As a side note, France doesn't allow FOP but we allow panoramas of the city. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:37, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Sounds good. I'm planning to go picture-crazy at the park in any case; I'll upload one later with a sample fair use rationale and then pester you to check it over. Cheers, Khazar2 (talk) 14:40, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
  • True, and we can wait for an actual discussion. I do believe you are correct there since countries without FOP still allow skyline images. It might come down to whether any individual sculptures display prominently in the image. Ryan Vesey 14:50, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
  • I think it may be because of the focus on the overall effect and not the individual works. Hence why a photograph of 9 CD covers isn't free, but a skyline can be. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:05, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Okay, I uploaded an image of the park's central piece, a 65x100x100 set of oil drums called "The Way". Could you take a look at my rationale here? File:The Way by Alexander Liberman, 1980.jpg Glad to revise/delete if necessary. I modeled on the rationale of another Liberman work. Also, in light of our conversation above, you might glance at File:Laumeier Sculpture Park 02.jpg; it's an image of a sculpture without addressing the sculpture's copyright in its rationale. Thanks as always for the help -- Khazar2 (talk) 03:14, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

That's funny, I saw the sculpture and I thought, that looks a lot like a sculpture on campus. I looked it up and sure enough the covenant (though it is given a much more crude name by the student body) was sculpted by Liberman
Thanks for the double-check. The Mrs. and I took some of our wedding photos in front of that sculpture, as it happens--great park. Khazar2 (talk) 03:40, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Hope everything's fine. I was just checking a page with the title Fuad al Muqtadir and saw that you have deleted the page on 26 July 2012. The reason was stated as lack of reliable sources claiming the notability of the artiste. I think these sources will meet the necessity :-

  • "Interview with Fuad Al Muktadir". banglamusic.com.

Thanks --Kmzayeem (talk) 10:46, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Alright, can I get the deleted article in the draft space?? Would be better for me. --Kmzayeem (talk) 11:17, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! Can the sources that I provided be considered reliable?? If I put the sources in the article, will it be restored?? --Kmzayeem (talk) 11:35, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Not sure about benglamusic, but BBC and The Daily Star should be. However, they aren't enough to show notability as they are not in-depth looks at the subject. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:17, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Politionele acties = dutch military aggression?

Selamat malam, pak. A question of Indonesian terminology for you - would you be able to confirm whether what the Dutch refer to as the Politionele acties, Indonesians refer to as Dutch Military Aggression (Agresi Militer Belanda)? An editor at Politionele acties disputes this and has removed it. (he's citing Indonesian wikipedia. lol) I note the Indonesian page refers to them as Agresi I & II later on, but I'm not about to reference wikipedia (let alone id wikipedia!) He has also removed mention that the actions/aggressions were against the Indonesian Republic "as it wasn't recognised til 1949"? That's certainly bs as the DUtch recognised the RI in 1946 at the Linggadjati Agreement (albeit only as having de facto sovereignty over Sumatra, Java, and Madura). Would be great if you could help clarify. cheers --Merbabu (talk) 12:00, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Would be nice if we could verify the first point as it is my personal experience too. Google should help there, or perhaps you have access to an esteemed Indonesian language source or two?? As for the second, solid references would be helpful as opposed to a revert war which I'm working on now (the former not the latter!). --Merbabu (talk) 12:19, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Well, Dr. Google says Agresi Militer is a valid term, although it may be more common with the two attacks themselves and not the actions as a whole. Have several sources regarding Linggadjati, will take a look. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:23, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
Cheers. I too noticed the tendency towards a more delineated I & II separation in Indonesian. But "Agresi militer belanda" gets 230k hits vs. Aksi polisionil gets 19k. --Merbabu (talk) 12:38, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

  1. From the nominations page go to #How to post a new nomination. Type the name of the new article in the box provided and click "Create nomination".
  2. Fill out the details, in accordance with the parameter (i.e. the article's title in "title", the writer(s)'s name in author, author1 and so on). Save the page.
  3. Transclude it (i.e. paste {{Did you know nominations/Article title}}) under the correct date heading (based on when the article was expanded.
  4. Wait for a review. You don't have to review other articles until you've had at least 5 DYKs. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:51, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Can you help me: (all done!)

Submitting a 7-in-1 DYK hook

Apparently somewhere I screwed up! I am trying to submit a 7-in-1 DYK hook, but apparently didn't do the last couple of steps correctly. Can someone add the Template I made to the August 16 DYK submission list. I can NOT figure out how to do that step. As you can see from my contributions I made the Template, but then got lost in the next step. I have forgot how to submit to August 16, as it has been awhile since my last DYK. Question

Template:Did you know nominations/List of songs recorded by Alexandra Burke has a picture in the hook, but I noticed here that the picture isn't there?? I'm only asking you as you sent it to prep 1. Aaron You Da One 17:13, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Far more picture hooks are proposed than could ever be run; most picture hooks are simply run without the image as there isn't enough room to run all of them. It's just down to luck of the draw really. GRAPPLE X 21:23, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Short articles

Hey man. Been sitting on a few smaller articles for a bit, having sent them through DYK. I generally like to at least hit the 1000 word mark before going off to GA, but some of these don't look like they'll ever get that far. If you have a bit of time, could you just give them a skim to let me know what you think their chances might be, based on comprehensiveness? At the minute I'm looking at Europa and the Pirate Twins (low-charting 30-year-old single, not a lot to be said on it); Crime and Dissonance (it's a compilation album of obscure film music, so again there's little to go on) and Operation Sandwedge (this one didn't even happen as a thing, so what is there to say?). Thanks for any time you spend on them. GRAPPLE X 21:28, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

  • At a glance, Crime and Dissonance looks like the best of the three. The other two probably stand a shot at passing, it's tricky with the historical article though, striking the right balance with the background. If you're writing about Nixon though, you might ask Wehwalt to take a look, he knows a lot about that guy. Mark Arsten (talk) 01:35, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Really? Though he only wrote about coins and Ohio. Anyways, Wehwalt could certainly be of great assistance. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:40, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
  • (edit conflict) I've nominated all three for the time being after expanding out some before and after background on Sandwedge. If any issues arise during reviews, I'll tap Wehwalt for what they might be able to add. I've kept the background light; two sentences of non-Sandwedge aftermath and three of forewording. GRAPPLE X 01:41, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

DYK favor

Crisco, when you get the chance, could you please take a quick look at Template:Did you know nominations/Pemberton Point? I just did a reorganization of one of the sections, with some new material added. It had been previously passed, but I found some issues. My edits shouldn't affect the already more than adequate size (added about 235 characters myself), and the hooks were okay, but I'd like someone independent to take a look at it for an approval. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:15, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

On my talk page at the bottom there is a request from user:Adi.akbartauhidin which I believe is in Malay or perhaps Indonesian saying to "thank you for the DYK for the English version of Oevaang Oeray. • As indicated in the deletion summary, the article failed to indicate the importance of the band. Without reliable sources to indicate that the band is notable, it can't have a stub either. I did a quick look on Google before deleting the article and could find no independent sources. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:02, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Chemsketch

There is a program called Chemsketch.

Chemsketch is great for chemistry. It lets you, among other things, draw molecules easily and view them in 3D.

Would taking pictures of these molecules, both in 2D and 3D, and uploading them be allowed? Or is it considered licensed and copyrighted by Chemsketch?

Thanks!

--Activism1234 22:21, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

  • Not sure. You should try the copyright questions desk. What do people usually use for drawing molecules? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:28, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
    • I've been using Chemsketch for all my chemistry-related activities for creating molecules, so I'm not sure what other people use. It's an incredibly handy tool, that can draw molecules as well based on the name you type in, give you a formula for the molecule, let you change the types of bonds... Of course, if you're not interested in chemistry this probably doesn't sound that big to you! But I love it. Thanks, I'll take a look at that though. --Activism1234 00:41, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

St. Benoit

Hallo Crisco,
two words of explanation about this moving mess of the article about Saint Benoit. The article has been moved three times today. The problem is that the name used now is wrong: either we go back to Saint Benoit (French) or to we move it to St Benedict (English). St Benoit is neither English nor French. Understood now? Alex2006 (talk) 09:50, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

  • The problem is G6 is only for non-controversial moves, and having been moved three times in a day suggests the title is controversial. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:55, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
    • I understand, but the first move Saint Benoit (Istanbul) => Saint Benoit was plainly wrong, since only in France there are eight churches with these name; the second user noticed the error and wanted to correct it, so performed the move Saint Benoit => Saint Benoit, Istanbul since brackets are wrong in this context. This is the correct name (in French). Later he noticed (and wrote) that "Saint" is French (but actually is also English :-)) and to correct it moved the article so: Saint Benoit, Istanbul => St Benoit, Istanbul since (he wrote in the comment) "St is English". "St" is English, but Benoit isn't. I don't see any controversy in it, but only a sequence of errors. Alex2006 (talk) 10:05, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Ogden Stake Tabernacle and Honolulu Stake Tabernacle

Would you please provide me copies of the Ogden Stake Tabernacle and Honolulu Stake Tabernacle articles which you deleted upon closure of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ogden Stake Tabernacle, a joint AFD, in July. I suspect that one or both topics are wikipedia notable after all and I want to try to develop one or both; I will review concerns in the AFD. --doncram 00:17, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Could you take a look at the images in this article, most of which are hosted on Commons? They are claimed to be PD-Pakistan but I am dubious, there's no indication of original publication and I'm especially dubious of the ones 1946 and after, which would not be PD in the US even if the fifty-year term under Pakistani law applied. Many thanks.--Wehwalt (talk) 09:10, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Most, possibly all, of these would probably get deleted on Commons, though I'm no expert of Pakistan image copyright law. I can poke around more if need be. @Crisco-I only see the commons:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Gandhi and Jinnah Bombay 1944.jpg del com on Commons. Where's the other? PumpkinSky talk 09:55, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
nb: be respectful of sulutil:Yann, the uploader of the 1944 image. Also a former steward. Nice guy. Br'er Rabbit (talk) 10:35, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
No offense to him/her, but for copyright purposes the images are not in good shape. The go-to page is not in agreeance with the template, btw. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:57, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Hey, looks like I have more than 1k images too. Kewlz. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:59, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Just giving a heads up; he's a reasonable guy, not a random image uploader.
I'm very grateful to you all. Images are a severe problem here, obviously and that is an impediment to advancing the article.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:53, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
I've sorted the photos above into OK and ? sections, see below:

PumpkinSky talk 21:22, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Pakistan_images Commons thread started there. PumpkinSky talk 21:30, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
I think the passport is OK under Crown Copyright. Not certain that entitles us to crop out the image though.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:40, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
The fact that the source is dead should not be a reason for deletion. These images are famous, and it is assumed that they were published at the time they were taken. Yann (talk) 04:48, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Also please take note that Indian and Pakistan copyright laws are not retroactive. In India, prior 1957, the term was 50 years after creation. So an image published in India before 1957, still has a 50 years term. Regards, Yann (talk) 04:56, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
I may have to send some emails to Pakistan, to the places that study Jinnah's life, and ask for images that they know were published pre-1946. I'm kinda reluctant.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:13, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
You can't assume an image was published when it was created. PumpkinSky talk 11:22, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
Concur. I am searching through what newspapers I can find online from British India of that era but there is not much and they didn't seem to do many pictures. But I suspect there's going to be difficulties at Jinnah over the deletions. I'll keep searching. Do we know anyone at Cambridge University? They seem to have archival access to The Times of India.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:39, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Film poster copyrights

Since you're pretty handy with image licensing I was wondering if you could give your opinion on File:Eraserhead.jpg. If it is PD as is claimed, I'd like to look for a better-quality version to replace it with; if it's not then I'm going to have to stop using it in my userspace. GRAPPLE X 00:47, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

  • Can't see any copyright issues. It's not unheard of for a film poster for a low-budget film (even until the late 1970s) to not have a copyright notice. Some notable or good examples include Deep Throat, Farmer's Daughters, and Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. The big studios mostly wised up by the 40s and 50s, although free posters (like Quo Vadis) exist.
Last year I spent several months finding free posters, so I know a couple good examples. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:58, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
Brilliant. A quick look around found this version, which, while smaller overall, doesn't have the crease line down the centre that our version does, and isn't tilted to one side like ours. Grand to upload as a new version? GRAPPLE X 01:18, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Is it possible to merge these edits with the page history for Eraserhead, or would I be better just dumping that content as one edit? What I have in my userspace is entirely my work as I didn't incorporate any of the existing article in there, so coming in as one edit doesn't violate any attribution guidelines, just it'd probably be better to show the history of that version coming about. GRAPPLE X 08:10, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Whenever's easy for you. I'll not be chasing it up anywhere for another few days (wanna save it for the next cup round, starts next week. Cheeky, I know). GRAPPLE X 08:22, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

It is not the redirect...

It is the recreation of the article (Mitt Romney's tax returns)that was invlaid. I think this was not at all handled well. The guy actually gets a barnstar and is encouraged to keep up these types of tricks and you agree it is a valid redirect, but do not even bother to address the recreation itself. I hope this is all above board, because it will likely the very same tactic will be used again to get articles any editor wants back by doing exactly this. Just ignore the AFD, recreate the article and then redirect it. Sounds like a plan I guess and one you have approved. Thanks. Saves so much time not to have to worry what consensus is.--Amadscientist (talk) 09:45, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Although, while it was obvious to me that a deletion request may not be appropriate with a redirect it is technicly the current article itself so I would really need to see this policy or guidline to fully understand how you handled this was factually correct and that the article should not have been speedy deleted. "Houston we have a HUUUUUGE gap in policy" allowing tricks and dishonest editing and I think that is the biggest failing here. Please, help me out to better understand your reasoning and how it applies to the current guideline and policy, If this is indeed proper and written down I am likely to understand it better. Any link you can provide to assist me to better understand this is appreciated.--Amadscientist (talk) 09:59, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
  • The tag you used would not qualify for a redirect, which is why I declined. If it's a problem of people continuing to recreate the page I'll be glad to protect. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:55, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
Exactly what tag are you referring to that "I" used? What are your proposing to protect? The controled recreation of the article? If so, that would be great, but appears this has neatly fallen into a crevice so deep, it appears it may never be retrieved to be deleted to be protected against recreation. I am disapointed by the way this went and almost feel like we are being manipulated. By, the way, I am only involved in the AN/I discussion. I did not participate in contributing to either articles this regards, or the AFD, or the revert war over the redirect. As a disclaimer, I am actually a Liberal Democrat and major contributer to many conservative figure's biographies and have always tried hard to keep politics out of my decision making and I hope you daon't see this in any way political. I am devastated that consensus has been dismissed and see this as a possibly huge loss for editor retention.--Amadscientist (talk) 21:16, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

please consider this adoption

Hi,

I know you're really busy but Arun sharma 101 asked Worm to adopt him.[1] Worm told me, when I supported the adoption request, that he was too busy and suggested that I look for another adopter at Wikipedia:ADOPT for Arum sharma 101. I saw you!

Arun sharma 101 is a very nice guy living in India. I taught him how to sign his signature by uploading the signature icon. Interacting with him is really pleasant and he learns quickly and has already contributed to an interesting article Lottery (short story) by a famous (in India) Indian author Premchand. (He asked me for more sources for the article, but I have access to NOTHING - even my library stinks.) I think he will be an active and positive editor.

Would you consider adopting him? We need editors from that part of the world, as you know!

Best wishes, MathewTownsend (talk) 12:42, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
