Question from Perpetua Labs (18:23, 15 February 2023)
Hi, I just created an account and to get the autoconfirmed status, we need to make at least 10 edits. I have a question, if a page has multiple edits then that would count as 1 edit or separate edits? --Perpetua Labs (talk) 18:23, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Perpetua Labs: I believe multiple edits to the same page still qualify as multiple edits in terms of autoconfirmation. Happy editing, and welcome to Wikipedia! Bsoyka (talk) 18:42, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you. Perpetua Labs (talk) 19:06, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Question from Unkifa (13:59, 12 March 2023)
I thought I got everything right, but I accidentally marked my first edit as a minor edit and didn't realize my mistake until after I had made my 2nd edit, which I believe was all good. I was reading about the dummy edits in case of marking a minor edit erroneously and was about to do that, but I'm not sure of how to refer to my 1st edit as containing the error, and not the last edit. --Unkifa (talk) 13:59, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Unkifa: I wouldn't worry too much about it. An edit summary just noting that the edit you marked minor wasn't supposed to be should be sufficient. Don't stress too much! Bsoyka (talk) 15:28, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
- gotcha, gotcha, will do. thanks. Unkifa (talk) 15:46, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

Your talk page notice
Did you create the notice for IPs or did you copy it from somewhere? It's a good idea but it didn't work since I AM signed in. I asked for help here if you got it from somewhere.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 22:30, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
In case you're wondering how I ended up here, I'm reading the Teahouse archives and misread your signature as that of someone who asked a question, and came here to see if you were aware of the response, and to let you know how to find the response if you were new, which you clearly are not.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 22:42, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

Not sure how to fix that as I'm not familiar with the internal workings of that template, nor would I be able to edit it anyways as it's template-protected.Hope this gives you at least a little info to go off of! Dickinson Financial Corporation moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, Dickinson Financial Corporation,is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG or WP:CORPDEPTH. It should have at least three. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 11:35, 5 January 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Kansas Business Hall of Fame
On 6 January 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Kansas Business Hall of Fame, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Kansas Business Hall of Fame includes the founders of Pizza Hut and Russell Stover Candies? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Kansas Business Hall of Fame. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Kansas Business Hall of Fame), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Matthew Perry.
What was that all about? Rowing007 was the one who almost ruined the whole page and the discussion has to be stopped and confirm that 17 Again is Matt's last role. 182.255.41.207 (talk) 04:01, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hey there. The discussion on the article talk page states very clear, descriptive, and seemingly valid reasons not to mention that the film is Perry's last role. Please read them. Our goal as an encyclopedia is not to try to honor people but to describe facts—we're not going to keep that mention in the article solely to not
disappoint Matthew
as you put it. If you believe this is incorrect, I suggest you mention it on that page, but I'm not sure consensus will be swayed on this one. You can also read up on our processes for dispute resolution. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 04:06, 6 January 2024 (UTC)- Yes. But if it's not added back, it would completely make the page less detailing and it would be too disappointing to the fact Rowing007 may or may have done this. So what am I going to do right now?182.255.41.207 (talk) 05:37, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- My talk page isn't the place to continue debating this—again, please see the article's talk page and the clear reasons already posted there. Namely,
it's basically a trivial mention
andthis is not an attribute of the film
. This is not a matter of the article missing details, it's a matter of some details not being relevant enough to the article for inclusion at all. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 05:47, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

Showing my article in Google Search
Dear Bsoyka,
I am writing to you because I recently published an article on Wikipedia, but it is still not appearing in Google search results even after 14 days. The article is titled Saeed Yaqubian.
I have followed all of Wikipedia's guidelines for new pages and believe I have written a quality article that meets the encyclopedia's standards. However, it seems to still be hidden from Google searches.
Do you have any advice on why this article isn't showing up? Are there additional steps I should take to improve the search visibility, or does it sometimes just take a long time for new Wikipedia pages to get indexed? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to assist, Bsoyka. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Best regards, Ahoora

Ash.Ahoora (talk) 15:22, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Ash.Ahoora: Hey there! You're correct in assuming it may sometimes take a while for new Wikipedia articles to move into search results. Articles newer than 90 days aren't allowed to be indexed by search engines unless they're reviewed by a new page patroller. Also, keep in mind that we can't control search engine results—we can only tell search engines whether they're allowed to look at certain articles. You can see WP:INDEXING for more info on how this process works. Hope this helps, and happy editing! Bsoyka (t • c • g) 15:40, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Proxy links
I find proxy links extremely useful. I'm unaware of any editorial consensus which says they shouldn't be used. I've restored the proxy links here, but they were removed again, and I have again restored them. Can your bot please stop doing this? Paul August ☎ 00:51, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hey, @Paul August! Proxy links are truly only helpful to experienced editors who actually have access to The Wikipedia Library. For the vast majority of our users (readers, along with inexperienced editors), these links block access to crucial references and external links. (Put simply, they're helpful for you and me, but not many others.) I personally recommend the Zotero browser extension, which can automatically redirect you through the TWL proxy when appropriate. As for consensus, there are a few pages I can point you to, and while they mainly apply to Newspapers.com links, the same concept holds true for all TWL proxy links:
Also, see some discussion about the bot's concept and the approved bot request.I hope this clears things up a bit. For now, I'm going to allow my bot to continue with its approved task, as consensus currently seems to reflect that TWL links do not belong in the mainspace. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 01:27, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Links that start with https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/article/ should be rewritten as https://www.newspapers.com/article because the former URL requires that the reader be logged in, have 500 edits and meet other requirements of the WP:LIBRARY.
— Wikipedia:Newspapers.com- Thanks for your considerate reply. But while we both obviously understand the benefit of such links to users who have access to the Wikipedia Library, I don't see a lot of benefit to other users in removing such links. For example when linking to a specific page of a work such as:
- Neither link provides this user with any content on page 67. How does removing such a proxy, link, of great benefit to some users (like you and me), provide any benefit to others?
- Regards, Paul August ☎ 14:55, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Paul August: If links are unproxied, others still have the option to view them in some cases. For example, this proxied JSTOR link requires access to TWL, but this unproxied version is completely open-access. Additionally, some people may have logins or other proxies through their own institutions, which they can't easily use when our TWL-exclusive links are shared. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 16:08, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- Well why can't we make the bot more discriminating. In the example I gave (and the ones I and most of the Greek and Roman mythology editors use), I don't see how any of your caveats apply. Paul August ☎ 16:14, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- That link actually appears to be open-access—I can access the content on p. 67 in an incognito window with no TWL access. Bsoyka (t • c • g) 16:44, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- Really? I can't. When I click the unproxied link all I see a snippet of the the Greek facing face (p. 66,) but on p. 67, which contains an english translation of the Greek text: all I see is the message: "You've reached the page view limit for your Loeb Classical Library preview. Please log in or subscribe to continue reading". Do you see the full Greek text and translation? And what is an "incognito window"? Paul August ☎ 13:55, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I see both pages completely. That message seems to imply that you personally have viewed too many pages on the site for free, and they're temporarily limiting your access. A typical user just viewing one or two pages and a handful of references wouldn't see this message. (Also, see incognito mode—it just ensures I'm not logged in anywhere, going through a proxy, etc.) Bsoyka (t • c • g) 15:36, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

- Well why can't we make the bot more discriminating. In the example I gave (and the ones I and most of the Greek and Roman mythology editors use), I don't see how any of your caveats apply. Paul August ☎ 16:14, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
New page reviewer granted
Hi Bsoyka. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:
- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
- Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
- Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 03:01, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from MathewPriest32 (00:32, 12 January 2024)
I'd like to edit the page of my name --MathewPriest32 (talk) 00:32, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- @MathewPriest32: I mean this in the nicest way possible—please don't. Writing an autobiography is very strongly discouraged for an array of reasons which are listed at WP:AUTO. However, see H:GS for some ways you can otherwise contribute constructively to the project! Bsoyka (t • c • g) 02:21, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your advice. The reason why I did this is because there used to be a page about me but it disappeared for some reason, I was just trying to rectify that as a few "fans" from abroad mentioned it.
- What should I do then? MathewPriest32 (talk) 05:54, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- Also, all I was doing is using the text from the page that had gone missing MathewPriest32 (talk) 05:55, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- @MathewPriest32: To put it plainly, the page was replaced with a redirect to your band's page because multiple editors have determined that you are not significantly notable separately from the group, which I have to say I agree with. See WP:NOPAGE for some info on that. Also, I'd advise you to read up on edit warring (and avoid it) and also recommend following the directions at WP:DISCLOSE. As an alternative to repeatedly recreating this standalone page, you could try to constructively improve the band's page, but be wary of the fact that you have an extreme conflict of interest and be careful in using a neutral point of view and making sure all your edits are sourced to reliable sources. Question from Razakazmii (21:12, 16 January 2024)
My first article is repeatedly being rejected one major reason: your article should more neutral.
Can you help me in thay? --Razakazmii (talk) 21:12, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Razakazmii: Hey there! Please read the decline messages on your talk page thoroughly: in addition to the neutrality issue, they also mention your writing is not supported by reliable sources. In my experience, focusing on this issue first often leads to resolving the problems around neutrality. Also, please read up on conflicts of interest, as I'd assume you might have one here based on your writing style. Hope this helps! Bsoyka (t • c • g) 03:43, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Question from Fagus Press (14:39, 29 January 2024)
Hi Ben, I am delighted to have added an item to a Wikipedia page. Pleas can you tell me if it is acceptable to add a creative work link to a historical page (something influenced by the subject and informative of it?). I hoped to do this under External Links on page I found but saw that the only option was to edit existing material rather than add just another simple link.Thank you so much, S Ritter --Fagus Press (talk) 14:39, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
Question from Fagus Press (17:27, 29 January 2024)
Hi again Ben, I have tried hard to get my submissions for editing in External Links right. I have already received two 'bites' from somebody about what I have tried to do. So I am guilty of abusing the website before any consideration has been given to me possible being just novice! I am moving on but would like to request that very active editors can be reminded to be polite to newcomers when they write directly to them - as they are indeed told to be by Wikipedia guidelines. Thank so much, All Good wishes. --Fagus Press (talk) 17:27, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from Raven 297 (23:56, 11 February 2024)
Hello MPGuy2824 or Bsoyka! A few weeks ago, I made a Wikipedia account to edit a page I had found. The mentor I was assigned is called Toadette. I had posted a question that was really a thank-you for being a mentor and for working against vandalism. I had also provided a link for another editor who had a question about translations. Yesterday, I checked the talk page for anything new, when a message said that both questions had been deleted. Do you know why this might have happened? --Raven 297 (talk) 23:56, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Raven 297: Hey there, and welcome to Wikipedia! Both those messages were automatically archived by a bot in this edit to keep that user's talk page tidy. See Help:Archiving a talk page for more information. For example, the same will happen to this thread once there's been no new activity for a week because that's how I prefer to have my own talk page set up. Hope that helps, and happy editing! - I am confused by my entire account. I have tried to go into Wikipedia and search for the listing I created. I search, "Dr. James Maurer"

- Almost ever listing on Wikipedia includes pictures. I am not seeing a way to upload a picture to the account I have created. DrJamesMaurer (talk) 21:17, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
- @DrJamesMaurer: I think you might have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is and how it works. This is not a social networking platform; it's an encyclopedia. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter
The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.
The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:
- Generalissima (submissions), who has 916 points mostly from one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher), 15 GAs, and 16 DYKs on a variety of topics including New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures, in addition to seven reviews
- Vami_IV (submissions), who has 790 points from two FAs on Felix M. Warburg House and Doom (2016 video game), two GAs, one DYK, and 11 reviews
- AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who has 580 points from one FA on Hö'elün, two GAs on Mongolia-related articles, two DYKs, and five reviews
- Sammi Brie (submissions), who has 420 points mostly from nine GAs and seven DYKs on television and radio stations
- MaranoFan (submissions), who has 351 points from one FA on Holidays (Meghan Trainor song), a nine-article FT on 30 (album), and three DYKs
- Skyshifter (submissions), who has 345 points from one FA on OneShot, one DYK and two reviews
In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Question from Foppyflop7 (05:12, 28 February 2024)
Hi, how does the tone of a page work? like how do you rewrite a paragraph to have a different tone. --Foppyflop7 (talk) 05:12, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Foppyflop7: Hey there! Tone is all about how a bit of text comes across to a reader. As a dramatic example, there's The absolutely amazing iPhone 15 is perfect and will meet your every need—buy one today! versus The iPhone 15 is a mobile phone developed by Apple. The former comes across like an advertisement and is generally unwelcome on Wikipedia, while the latter speaks from what we call a neutral point of view and is more formal.
Rewriting a paragraph to have a different tone just means shifting the wording to change how a reader would perceive the text. Here on Wikipedia, we strive for that formal and neutral tone in articles.
Hope this helps a bit! Bsoyka (t • c • g) 01:47, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Scribe-called-Jalala (18:27, 7 March 2024)
Hi Ben, thank you for reaching out! For now, I have a quick Q. When editors find a dead link but also locate a page where it has been archived, they are supposed to leave the original as is, mark its url = dead, and add its archived version. In that case, my understanding is the original url cannot be tagged with [dead link] to show readers it's dead, even if it's marked as such in the back. Is this understanding correct? In other words, when the reference shows an archived version, the underlying assumption is the original may *or* may not be dead but it doesn't matter because it's available as archived? --Scribe-called-Jalala (talk) 18:27, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Scribe-called-Jalala: Hey there! This question is why we have the
|url-status=
parameter. For example, with|url-status=live
:- ESU Alumni Association (2012). "A Brief History of Emporia State University" (PDF). Emporia State Institutional Repository Collection. Emporia State University. p. 13. Archived (PDF) from the original on March 22, 2018. Retrieved November 22, 2023.
- Versus with
|url-status=dead
:- ESU Alumni Association (2012). "A Brief History of Emporia State University" (PDF). Emporia State Institutional Repository Collection. Emporia State University. p. 13. Archived from the original (PDF) on March 22, 2018. Retrieved November 22, 2023.
- When the URL is marked as still accessible (live), the first link is the live link, so readers go there first. When the URL is dead, the positions of the links switch, bringing the archived version to the front of the reference. I hope this helps clear things up a bit! Bsoyka (t • c • g) 03:23, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- Perfect -- yes, it is clear now. Thank you so much for your help, Ben! Scribe-called-Jalala (talk) 05:16, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
