Spam blacklist

Hi, Anna Frodesiak. Last week, you asked about how you can have Baidu Baike added to the spam blacklist in this discussion. I noticed that the discussion was archived before you got a response, so I'll answer here on your talk page: just go to MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist and follow the instructions to make a new "proposed addition". Be sure to include a link to the blacklisting discussion from WP:RSN to support your case. Thanks! — Newslinger talk 23:48, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Bring in the noise

Not sure about the rest of the world, but for the US, this site owned by The Atlantic covers city noise: [1] [2] you may also try a search like [3]. Sorry, if only slightly helpful, at most. Alanscottwalker (talk) 23:00, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

Thank you, Alanscottwalker. Google is blocked where I am, but the others are interesting. I'm not sure if that content is reliable or how it can be used in a potential List of cities by noise pollution level. By the way, are you referring to The Atlantic? Many thanks, nonetheless. It is appreciated. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:13, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Sorry about the google foo. I do see this there [4] may lead to similar. Alanscottwalker (talk) 23:17, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for that Alan! What do you think of this? Reliable? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:21, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Yes, citiquiet.com just cannot be a reliable source. :( Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:29, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Afraid not, nor the hearing loss company itself, perhaps underlying data. Alanscottwalker (talk) 23:39, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Well, thank you, my friend. I guess it is an article that will not happen for a while. I'm much obliged. Thank you kindly. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:42, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Sadly, it looks like there might be all kinds of issues with all kinds of urban stats internationally. [5] Alanscottwalker (talk) 23:53, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Rats. Another fly in the ointment. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:04, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

Here are some more, posted here because I cannot post on the Reference Desk. Hope you can access these pages.70.67.193.176 (talk) 21:05, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

  • [6] Based on the Mimi research you were looking at above, but reported on by a secondary source - I do not know if that makes it more reliable. Ten noisiest are Guangzhou, Delhi, Cairo, Mumbai, Istanbul, Beijing, Barcelona, Mexico City, Paris and Buenos Aires. Ten quietest are Zurich, Vienna, Oslo, Munich, Stockholm, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Portland (US), Cologne and Amsterdam.
  • [7] Forbes (good source) citing this consumer testing company which in turn again uses the Mimi data.

Hi all. Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for the input. I will look at it shortly. I have some off-wiki stuff to look after right now. Many thanks! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:38, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi Alanscottwalker, DA Sonnenfeld, and 70.67.193.176. Okay, all things considered, I just do not trust these sources. The Forbes list conflicts with other lists I've seen and is blog-sourced. I think we need to wait a few years. Many thanks to all for finding what could be found. Cheers. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:13, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

Dear Anna,

I came across you from the last edit to the Nuseir Yassin page. If you check the edit history from the last couple of hours, I had deleted links to LinkedIn and Facebook visible in the References list numbered 1, 2, 7, 13, and 14. Another editor reverted the edits citing WP:External Links policy, saying "this is an article on a high profile Facebook Show, hence FB lnks are passable".

Since you are an administrator here, I thought of reaching out and ask for your opinion on the same. My WP experience says the links should not be there in the "References" section. They can go in the "External Links" section. Ref no. 9 is a Crunchbase link. Shouldn't this be removed?

Have a nice day & thanks for your time. Csgir (talk)

Hi there Csgir. That is really more of a content issue. I suggest raising the subject at the article's talk page. You can also hunt for policies and guidelines on the matter. Search youtube and facebook at Wikipedia:External links/Perennial websites. Sorry I can't be of more help. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:59, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Okay, digging into this. Thank you, Anna. Csgir (talk)
You are most welcome. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:03, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

Question

Hello Anna. I seem to recall that edit summaries were of particular importance to you (I know my rate has been over 90% ever since you discussed them with me all those years ago). I was wondering if you would consider discussing them with another editor?. They have been asked by four different editors over the past 6 months to add summaries to their edits, but they have thus far stead-fastly refused, except in very rare instances when apparently making a point. I thought you could use that ambassadorial-like charm and discuss this with them in that diplomatic fashion you are always demonstrating at ani. They have been making a lot of changes to high profile pages, such as blp's and infoboxes on political pages, creating work for others that have to double-check the changes. Just think of it as a favour for the project. We thank you in advance for your assistance. - wolf 04:23, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Thewolfchild. How are things? Ninety percent is fantastic, and hugely appreciated. Thank you!
Okay, I posted!
And to you, thank you! I think we are both dedicated to Wikipedia, so my post at ANI was for a good cause. We want you around indefinitely making thousands of edits every year. That's the bottom line.
And for you, the bottom line is the efficiency and insane power of honey. So, pour on that honey. Drown 'em in honey. Inject honey into their veins! Leave 'em glistening and all covered with bees and ants and bears and all diabetic and stuff. Okay, too far. Seriously: go kill 'em with kindness! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:27, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
I just saw it. It was like a... tsunami of honey. But, we'll now it goes over. Thank you for the comment - wolf 05:33, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
That was a tsunami. :) Yes, we'll see. From my experience, those requests usually do not work. So, kudos to you. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:35, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

Chicken powder

Yum! Wonder if it has MSG?
North America1000 02:21, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
I think it is mainly MSG. The bottle says "Ingredients: MSG, yellow dye, and cancer chemical 459." Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:23, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
MSG is not good for you! Have a Carrot Instead! --Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 02:38, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
Or some bread with marmite, Anna's favorite! North America1000 07:23, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
Thegooduser and North America, I suppose one could compress all the chicken powder MSG and marmite into some sort of carrot shape. Then, they could be gathered and blasted into space. Earth would be the better for it. Of course, aliens would die or be horribly grossed-out. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:20, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Nah, Just vacuum seal it and give it to NASA for space "Instant Noodles with MSG" lol. --Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 23:59, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
Silly, NASA stopped giving MSG and Tang to astronauts because they all kept having strokes. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:11, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello Anna Frodesiak,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 07:49, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
Thank you!! Happy holidays!! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:20, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Thank you

Hello again. Thanks for the protection at the RD. You should know that PC is not very effective since the edits and edit summaries will still need rev/del. I have found that it is better to prevent them entirely. I'm not insisting just suggesting. Now it is possible that this troll may stop but you might keep the desk on your watchlist and if they return take what action you deem needed. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 09:11, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

I see you've already changed them while I was typing - Many thanks!! MarnetteD|Talk 09:13, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
MarnetteD, hello. I noticed others revdelling and didn't want to step on their toes. What's a PC? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:15, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
It is my shorthand for "Pending Changes" protection. When I saw this edit summary I thought that was the protection that you had added but now that I look at it again I think you add normal protection and just had that in your edit summary. When that troll gets going it can be a pain to catch up :-) MarnetteD|Talk 09:18, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
Ha ha, I had to ask at IRC what PC was. :) I'm terrible with acronyms. Cheers. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:19, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Incorrect revert

Hello. Your revert [8] was incorrect. You might like to consider rolling back that revert. I won't do it because my edits were of relatively little consequence. With best wishes. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 22:00, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi RobbieIanMorrison. Sorry if I've made a mistake. It seems, though, that all three posts were responses to the original question, and so each should get a single colon. Was I wrong? Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 22:03, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Seasons Greetings

Adapted from {{Season's Greetings}}
Thank you, happy holidays, and enjoy the season. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:16, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

"Provide a valid and informative explanation including, if possible, a link to the Wikipedia principle you believe justifies the reversion...if the reversion is not adequately supported then the reverted editor may find it difficult to assume good faith."

"restore disputed revert. please discuss this at talk" is not a valid or informative explanation. 146.90.39.222 (talk) 13:45, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

How is this? Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:53, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
Doesn't refer to any policy or guideline that justifies overriding WP:IG and WP:NOTINDISCRIMINATE. Reinforces the impression that you're reverting just to start an edit war. You've reverted twice, I reverted once. You should stop being disruptive. 146.90.39.222 (talk) 14:04, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
There is a big difference between a policy or guideline. This is about guidelines and is a garden-variety content dispute. The disruptive party is the one who tries to force a change to a stable version of the article. Now, I will not revert and neither should you. I am happy you are using the article talk page and you are making a good point there. I will join you there, my friend and we will see what the community wants. Happy holidays to you. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:32, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

December 2018

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.90.39.222 (talk) 14:06, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

Ion Propelled Aircraft

Hello Anna,

I am the inventor of the first ion propelled aircraft in history that can carry its power supply. I have been working on these devices for over 19 years. My invention has been been able to lift its power supply vertically or horizontally for over a decade. Previously, the power supplies were almost 3 orders of magnitude too heavy to be carried by such crafts.

I own the patent for this technology. Please see US Patent No.10,119,527. This is a legal document that states that I am the first inventor by law to have made an ion propelled aircraft that can carry its power supply. The document also gives me legal claim over anyone that makes or sells any ion propelled aircraft that carries its power supply since 08/06/2014.

While I have made well over 100 videos of my invention in flight carrying its power supply over the years, there are 4 that I have made public on YouTube so far. All of these versions of the craft predate the MIT device and all Produce over an order of magnitude better lift to weight ratio and efficiency in general. The device has been demonstrated to many news organizations, NASA personnel, GLIDE in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as to other official observers, all are easy to authenticate if needed. I have collected a lot of news articles, as well as the US Patent, flight videos, and a reasonably thorough explanation of how the device works, on my website, a link is provides as one of my references, so that anyone can verify these facts without the slightest ambiguity. I think that Dr.Steven Barrett and his students may very likely have been aware my patent application online, but did not consider carefully that the ideas shared in it clearly do result in a better performing machine. I find it improbable that the entire team didn't google "ion" and "aircraft" to immediately see my patent application during the nearly 3 years the application was posted before they built theirs. It is reasonable to suppose they didn't believe it was real because they considered it mathematically impossible according to their last couple of papers. Further, they may not have realized that my patent was made into law on Nov, 6th 2018. The Nature Magazine article and video where the students and Barrett say they were "the first in history to fly any kind of ion propelled aircraft," was released on about Nov, 21rst or 22nd, 2018. Since then a great number of news and magazine articles have come out repeating the Nature story. Repeating a thing does not make it correct though! If you take just a moment to read the references I have provided on this subject you will see that there is no dispute or historical controversy. It is very disturbing that there are so many news sources that are now just plain wrong! I don't blame you for listening to Nature Magazine or MIT. etc. I know what I am talking about regarding this matter. Please forgive the long letter. Thanks for your time, Ethan Krauss — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ethan Krauss (talkcontribs) 00:10, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Question

I have come across an editor who does a LOT of little/itty-bitty edits - they'll do ten different edits on a single article and each edit is maybe 2 or 3 bytes. And it's driving me crazy - I'm not sure yet if they are some kind of hidden vandal so I have to go through and check Every. Single. Edit...
Is there some policy or guide line that says to avoid this? I seem to remember something along those lines but can't find the pertinent WP-page. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 04:02, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Shearonink. I do not think there is a policy. However, if it is really extreme, then it may be considered disruptive, which would make it actionable. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:12, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

Request for help with User:28wikiedits28

I noticed that you previously banned User:28wikiedits28 for disruptive editing, especially on biographies of politicians. This user seems to be continuing that behavior on Ernesto Lopez now that they are unblocked. They also vandalized my user page (here) for apparently no reason. They recently blanked their own talk page and removed the information about their previous ban. Could you please help? Thank you. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 01:05, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Wallyfromdilbert. He is now blocked. Please do not forget to use edit summaries. It helps. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:37, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for your help and advice, Anna. For the edit summaries, are you talking about on the Ernesto Lopez article? I am pretty new and I did not use edit summaries often when I first created my account, but I have been trying to use them for all my edits recently, especially once I began using Twinkle. If you have any examples or any other advice where I can improve my editing, I greatly appreciate it, although I know you are busy as well. I try to read as many policies as I can, but I am not good with some of the more technical aspects especially. Thank you again. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 01:58, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
You are most welcome, Wallyfromdilbert. Yes, I was referring to the Lopez edits, but I see you are now using edit summaries. That is good. If there is anything you ever need or have any questions, please ask. Thank you, and happy editing. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:43, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

Empennage?

Hi, as you have some experience of WP:COMMONNAME, would you mind taking a look at the article on the aircraft empennage or tail, and the discussion at Talk:Empennage#Suggested_move? A key issue seems to be whether or not a less-common technical term should be used for the title because the more common name needs disambiguating. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 19:43, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi, Steelpillow. I know little about the subject. I'll leave it to others to decide. Sorry I cannot help. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:29, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
I was hoping that you could cast some light on how we usually handle the balance between disambiguating a common name or using a less common name. I could then apply your knowledge to the specific technical issue in question. Or, is the balance always taken on a case by case basis? — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 09:52, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

And Anna, it's gorgeous up there, close to Tennessee. There's a spectacular dam on the Tennessee river right there, and it's near weird places like Coon Dog Cemetery and the Rattlesnake Saloon (the food is alright, and it's a total redneck place, but to sit under that ledge is cool). Mandatory use of Show Preview

Hi Anna,

Is there any way the use of Show Preview option can be made mandatory across Wikipedia as some editors keep making edit after edit rather that properly reviewing the article before posting it ?/

In my personal opinion, it is cheating to increase the number of edits made. Superfast1111 (talk) 05:15, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi, Superfast1111. I do not think there is a way. And do not worry about how many edits people make. There are editors with only several thousand edits who produce fantastic stuff. (I just started an article and put it together with a couple of dozen edits. I could have done it with one, I suppose.) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:04, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for your input Anna. To be honest with you, in some of the video games I play which involve weapons, I prefer the single shot Sniper rifle to a scatter gun Assault rifle.
Maybe that's why I prefer to use show preview to have a single near perfect edit.

First, I can't commit to constantly being available to maintain the page, but I'd be happy to contribute to it when I can... would that be alright? SkyGazer 512, hello! First, yes, please feel free to work on it if and when and how much you can. Any little bit helps. Second, yes, Commons. One way is to look at List of XXXXX and see what is redlinked, then go to the commons parent category and see if we have images for that thing. An example is List of lighthouses in Prince Edward Island and compare to the Commons category linked at the bottom of that page. Another way is to look at a genus article and compare that to the commons category. Best wishes, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:13, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Well, per an addition to the article by another user, "the Klingon character Worf is introduced to prune juice by Guinan. He declares that it is a "warrior's drink" and he then drinks it in subsequent episodes". North America1000 23:53, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

The ‘non-debruised’ glass could be cropped from the top left of the illustration in this ad, but it wouldn’t be great.
(talk page stalker) @Northamerica1000: I take it you’re looking for a photo? Because a search turns up quite a few old ads, that aren’t in c:Category:Plum-based beverages. (I only looked at the first couple pages of search results, but didn’t see any others with a picture.)—Odysseus1479 02:09, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

tacky

You re revert a section you added and then tell ME to do BRD ? I usually applaud your work, but think you're wrong to re revert your own work without discussion and then say I am the one in the wrong. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 13:29, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello, my friend. I added a section. It stood for many edits. That means it is part of the last stable version. You came along and removed it. I restored it, per BRD. The onus on on you now to make a case and get consensus for its removal. That is how things work here. My best wishes. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:32, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
NewsAndEventsGuy, I see you mentioned at article talk that it was less that 24 hrs. But it was more than 60 edits. Maybe I was wrong, maybe not. If you can guide me in defining "last stable version", please do?
Please, let's work this out. Please think up a way to have one table and all countries listed somehow. That would fix the problem. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:13, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
Sure we'll figure it out. At article talk you have left some comments I have not yet seen. This will be my last post here unless you ask me something specific. We can do the rest at article talk. I'll just say, in reply to your comment "one table and all countries listed", at article talk if you haven't already done so, maybe you can explain why the existing table is incapable of doing that? Because it sure looks like it does it to me. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 00:17, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

How does one objectively assess if an image is "objectively terrible"? MPS1992 (talk) 00:44, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
A fruitcake
Who can say for sure?
Ahhhh, MPS1992, that is a very good question. I guess that is a bit of a figure of speech, actually. I think I was thinking that it would be broadly considered by almost everyone on Earth as terrible.
An example: I think it fair to say that a lead picture of, say, a fruitcake should be a picture of a fruitcake. If it were, say, an iced cake showing absolutely zero fruitcake, that would be, as the old saying goes, an "objectively terrible" image choice. But I do see your point, my friend. And, the link: [9]. Best wishes, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:21, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
You can freeze the unused portion of that fruitcake and then put it back out next Christmas...North America1000 11:28, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
The tradition is that you freeze it for a few months, then come to your senses, and throw it out. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:31, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
Fruitcake is promoted and celebrated as a healthy meal on its own! by the lobby group Insulin Manufacturers' Association. 11:34, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Regarding "you got me good", did I really, or are you just foolin' me? North America1000 00:10, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
Really, you got me good, and I should know. I'm great at April Fools jokes. My favourite is deep knee bends till you're out of breath, then phone a friend and say Washington got nuked and quick turn on the TV. The out of breathness really sells it and it works 90% of the time. Another good one is patting your chest with two hands really fast so when you talk, it sounds like you are in a helicopter. Then you call a friend and tell them you got a helicopter tour and are above their house and tell them to look out the window into the sky. They always do. Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. DYK for Criminal-justice financial obligations in the United States

On 7 April 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Criminal-justice financial obligations in the United States, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that fees and penalties charged as part of criminal-justice financial obligations in the United States may lead to the justice system becoming both a result and a cause of poverty? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Criminal-justice financial obligations in the United States), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
