Welcome to the ranks of those of us who have been working on this article for 18 months or more. I must respectfully disagree of the characterization of the lead as a "meandering mess." Per WP:MOS, with an article of this size, the purpose of the lead is to summarize it, not include any information which is not covered in equal or greater depth within the article. It should be comprehensive but not go into too much depth either.
As it is currently written, it flows logically and chronologically, although we may be coming up short on that final criteria, too much depth. However, we cannot accomplish the other goals with this lead in a single paragraph. That has been the result after numerous edits in the past. We have frequently had to re-edit for greater brevity as events have unfolded, and I suggest your efforts might be re-directed to that goal which would benefit the article. Vaoverland (talk) 22:50, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. In my comments, I do not wish to discourage your efforts in joining the WP team. I have had to put more effort in that article than most I watch, so my fuse may be a little too short. I will sure be among those relieved when the the changing events settle down. Please remember me as an administrator you may come to as you refine and deepen your WP participation should you have questions or need assistance. Best wishes for a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday, Mark Vaoverland (talk) 20:04, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
James Gelfand
I think you had it pretty well figured out. It is likely that Google will pickup on your new Wikipedia article for him on their own. It will probably be ranked higher than the one which is a subpage of your user page they have now. One trick to make that happen faster is to visit it a number of times, since Google reacts to the number of times a web page is accessed.
Because restoring deleted pages can get tricky, I went ahead and created a new subpage for you which has nothing but a redirect to the James Gelfand article. I don't think you did anything wrong, and I don't believe you would have needed admin tools to do what I just did. Several thoughts:
- 1. You may want to delete the redirect page I just created after a while. I see no harm, though.
- 2. In the future, you can avoid this problem (unwanted Google hits) by giving your working subpage a name which is meaningful only to you (IE JGworking, etc.). Remember, your working sub pages may show steps you took in creation that you would just as soon not share. By being more discreet with your naming, you don't lead everyone to your working copy.
- 3. I noticed that there is James P. Gelfand with the US Chamber of Commerce who also comes up under a Google search. If and when he is notable enough to have an article, it will be desirable to do disambiguation actions (WP:dab). (I recently did that with the name Jackson Davis and Jackson T. Davis if you wish to see that process in action.
- I hope all this helps. Mark, Vaoverland (talk) 23:47, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Glad to help, two things: 1. Please be sure to sign and date your work and messages by adding four tilde characters at end of your communication. I need that to keep my volume of messages straight and it is widely considered a WP courtesy. 2. If you like my TALK box (see my page) I a can easily make one for you and put it on Your talk page, really help me keep my new messages moving to where they belong on my talk page. (It was a a gift to me from a fellow Wikipedian a while back. I am just offering to share that gesture of friendship and convenience with you). Its real easy for me to do. I can also remove it quickly if you don't like it. Just drop me a line. Mark Vaoverland (talk) 00:10, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Larry Langford
Hi - thanks for the message.
I'm not a regular on that article, was just watching CNN and looked up the article, and changed the heading levels. The Manual of Style might seem confusing at first, but after a while it seems natural (there are some jokes about obsessive Wikipedia editors typing and in emails) -- you seem to have picked the rest up a lot quicker than I did :).
Anyway, welcome to Wikipedia and thanks for the work you've done recently on the Larry Langford article -- all looks great.

DYK
You still have time to submit a DYK for Kamilo Beach. Viriditas (talk) 12:36, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- I've left a message with User talk:Kalathalan asking him to help. Viriditas (talk) 12:40, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- FYI...I've removed some information from the article. Apparently, some of those sources are wrong. It looks like a reporter named Howard Dashefsky writing for KHNL got a bit confused between the terms "southeast" and "South Point". :) Dashefsky says, "It's Kamilo Beach on the southern tip of the Big Island", but if you look at the map he provides, you can see for yourself, it's nowhere near the southern tip - in fact it's miles away. Viriditas (talk) 13:35, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- He's apparently not the only one. Kenneth R. Weiss of the Los Angeles Times also refers to it as "the southernmost tip". I think the confusion lies in the size of the district (the district itself is the southernmost district) and in whether to include Kamilo Beach as part of Ka Lae, which is what it appears that they are doing. But you can see from any map, that it is not the southernmost tip. I'm curious why they are referring to it like that. I would be satisfied with using more academic sources. I've had issues with general news reports before. :) Viriditas (talk) 13:59, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Aloha, Anna! Having just submitted an article for the Did you know section on the Main Page, I can try helping you get a fact from your Kamilo Beach article onto the main page. We should start with getting an idea of what the "hook" (the fact from the article that appears on the main page) could be. Are there any facts in the article that you think would be interesting to Wikipedia visitors? Facts that have citations would be better choices, but go ahead and pick any you'd like. Thanks, and good job on the article! —Kal (talk) 03:28, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- Wonderful! The obvious hook would seem to be the accumulation of marine debris from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The point of drawing attention to Kamilo is to draw attention to this revolting garbage patch and its sheer size. This garbage patch is simply bombarding the Hawaiian islands. That is the point.
- I am not sure that is what you wanted me to write, but that is the crux. Nobody cares about a swirling mass of garbage unless it affects something. Well, it affects Kamilo more than anything else. Its horror is exemplified there.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:32, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hm...how does something like this sound? Did you know "... that Kamilo Beach on the southeast of Hawaii island, with over 4.5 kilometers of shoreline debris, is considered one of the dirtiest beaches in the world?" However, I'm not sure if this fact would be considered neutral (unbiased). —Kal (talk) 06:57, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late response; I was busy all day. Anyway, if you have no objections, I'll nominate soon, as the deadline is about 5 hours and 35 minutes from now. Here's the fact I came up with: "... that Kamilo Beach on the island of Hawaii, along with 4.5 kilometers of adjacent shoreline, is considered one of the dirtiest beaches in the world because of accumulated marine debris from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?" —Kal (talk) 02:10, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Issue with the picture
You say it's "courtesy algalita.org". If so, it cannot be licensed as a PD release unless it states as much at the point of original publication. If it's unpublished, you need for them to send you an email releasing it into the public domain. Otherwise, I will have to request the image be deleted from Commons as it is inadequately free. Daniel Case (talk) 10:38, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- I just checked the website. The page it's on has a very clear copyright notice. I'm sorry but not only can it not be used for DYK, it will have to be deleted at Commons. Daniel Case (talk) 10:41, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- I'm still very sorry, but the language in that email isn't legally sufficient for us to consider the image in the public domain (and it seems to me like she's confused it, as many people do, with "publicly viewable and not copy-protected"). As long as that copyright notice is there on the bottom of the page, it can't be considered in the public domain.
You need to email her back (or if you want me to do it and explain this better, I will) explaining that they need to have language like that found in {{attribution}} underneath the pictures on their webpage if they want it to legally be PD or PD-equivalent (and reserving the right to attribution, as her email does, means it cannot technically be a PD image as that status reserves no rights whatsoever). Daniel Case (talk) 11:36, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Change what appears on their website in order for us to use the pic??? I don't think that will happen.I will hunt elsewhere for a pic. Cheers--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:52, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Also see the new problem I mention at the bottom of this page: ABC News attributes the photo to Charles Moore and The Algalita Marine Research.[1] Anna, keep in mind, you're not the first new editor to go through this. Pretty much every editor on the site has had to deal with issues like this. Let's just say, welcome to Wikipedia! :) Viriditas (talk) 11:55, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

James Gelfand and Google
I do not know how long it takes for Google. I have some things appear sooner than others. I don't think there is anything more you can do. However, less your cousin "freak", the Google hit which comes back with your sub page does lead to his article, so many people who might do a Google search and click in it would not even notice a difference. Michael Jackson, Islam, and your position
Hi Julia, just so that I'm clear, do you believe the MJ Islam story? I am not sure if this is about including rumours as part of the page, or including this story as fact, or what. As, you may have read, I agree with most of what you have written. Thanks.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:13, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
- I think like a lot of these things there is probably an eliment of truth, but to be honest I really dont care. All I saw was somebody asking why it was not on the MJ page in a wiki forum, so I did my research, evaluated the sources and made what I believe was a reasonable decision that it should be included. If the three MJ fans who obvously control and push a overally positivly biased MJ biog had not been so aggressive I would probably would have just left it at that; but that is wikipedia and I suspect at some point they will annoy sombody so much that it gets looked at by unbiased admins.....But thanks for your support.

Algalita photo
Anna, I'm sure everyone believes you, but the problem isn't your licensing - it's the URL:[2]. You see, even though you received permission to use the photo, the page the photo appears on says, "Copyright 2002 - 2008 Algalita.org. All rights reserved." So, we probably need to get them to contact OTRS. Here are the instructions for releasing the photo. You will probably need to have Marieta Francis or another representative send the e-mail per those instructions. Good luck. Viriditas (talk) 11:12, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Bummer. We are talking about seriously left wing ex-hippies here. I wrote to 20 orgs requesting a pic and these folks were the only ones who helped. For them to actually tackle wiki-rules and forms and conditions is impossible. I mean, corporate lawyers could barely figure out WP: Bizarrely complicated legalese. I almost went blind trying to figure out how to make a userbox. I think the easiest way would be for someone to get on a plane and go there with a camera.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:21, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- I can probably do that, but not until the spring. I'm on Maui, which is very close. Anyway, don't worry. If the person who released the photo to you bothered to send you the e-mail, then the least they can do is follow the instructions above. Just let them know it's important to you, and I see no reason why they would say no. I'm sorry you have to deal with this, but it's really not your fault. The copyright notice probably appears on every page of their site, regardless of the status of the photos. My guess is that OTRS is the only solution, but perhaps we can post a notice on a messageboard and find another one. Viriditas (talk) 11:25, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Maui? Cool. Okay. I will write to them. Is it daytime there? What should I instruct them to do, in the simplest terms? Also, I like the idea of the message board request. Very slick.

- This whole 'stickler for paperwork' thing reminds me of Brazil, the movie. I mean, after all, the whole point is that wiki doesn't get zapped for breaking the law. Well, a rep from the org said in no uncertain terms: the pic is okay to use. What's going to happen? The boss of Algalita will say she had no auth. to say that and sue wiki for publishing a snapshot of a beach they are trying to protect? These seems very Brazil to me. People must upload illegit. pics all the time and just lie about the source. Well, this one was okayed with due diligence. .....AAwwww, I'm just ranting. Let's go the noticeboard route and I will email them if you can tell me what will not confuse the heck out of them. Thanks for helping.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:36, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- See my note above explaining that they need to have language like that in the {{attribution}} template for us to be able to use it. Is it possible that someone here could just go down there and take a new photo? Is it that accessible? Daniel Case (talk) 11:38, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- And yes, Anna, I agree even though I have to enforce it that our "free" image policy winds up creating more virtual paperwork and bureaucracy than the informal alternative. We enforce other people's copyrights far more strictly than the copyright holders themselves do. Daniel Case (talk) 11:41, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Saaayyyy, I still have the pic on my hardrive. I was the one who name it Kamilo.courtesy.of.Algalita...... etc. Can I just re-up it to wikicommons under the name KamiloBeach1.jpg with no accreditation? Algalita did say credit if you can.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:44, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Anna, there's no hurry. In situations like this, it's best to let the discussion die down first, before doing anything. FYI... ABC News attributes the photograph to "Charles Moore/The Algalita Marine Research Foundation". Daniel, would Charles Moore have to contact OTRS to release it for use on Wikipedia, or could any representative of Algalita do it? Viriditas (talk) 11:46, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Will search for pic elsewhere or nuke the site from orbit.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:54, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Anna, I'll be here to help if you have any questions. I can't guarantee I'll be online, but leave me a message at your convenience. As I said in the above section, pretty much every editor that I know of has had to deal with this problem, so don't take it personally. It's best to let things work themselves out. Remember, the reason the Wikimedia Foundation does this, is to prevent getting sued. So, they are only trying to protect themselves. Let's remember that. Viriditas (talk) 11:59, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Will search for pic elsewhere or nuke the site from orbit.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:54, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
That's a good question. If Charles Moore took the photos and lets Algalita use them, then he's the copyright owner, not them, and should politely ask them to indicate as such on their page. But, if they paid him to take the photos for them, then they own the copyright, unless they agreed to let him retain copyright as part of the arrangement.
You might also consider asking Algalita, if the photos (including the one at issue) are indeed theirs, to relicense the photos as CC-BY-SA via this page (they'd have to choose to allow commercial use of the work, to allow modifications and unported jurisdiction for it to be good for us). Daniel Case (talk) 19:50, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Another solution?
You could try e-mailing Charles Lawrence (cwlawrenceAThotmailDOTcom) and ask him to release one of the images of Kamilo Beach for use on Wikipedia.[3]. Since the copyright on Pbase.com belongs to the owner, a simple e-mail from him, in this instance, would allow us to use it. Viriditas (talk) 12:23, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Good suggestion! Oh, and I take this all with a smile. I don't phase easily. This matter is more entertaining than annoying. I hope my style of writing has not been misleading or off-putting.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:48, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Done! I sent:
Hello!
I have created a Wikipedia page on the Kamilo Beach. We are having a bit of a problem with the photo. Marieta Francis of Algalita allowed us to use a pic but their website has a copyright statement below the pic. The admin at wiki feel that the pic may not be public domain, even though Marieta sent me two emails stating that it was okay.
I am writing to see if you can email to me, or upload to Wikicommons, a Kamilo Beach photo, showing all its horrors, which is totally public domain. That means not appearing on any site which has a copyright notice attached to the pic.
Kamilo brings attention to the most underreported phenomenon on earth -- The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. If only people knew...
Please help if you can. "This is our most desperate hour" --Princess Leah, Starwars Two or something like that.
P.S. Kamilo, and the GPGPatch are nominated to appear on Wiki's front page. Good exposure, so time is of the essence. --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:02, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- That means not appearing on any site which has a copyright notice attached to the pic.
- That's not the issue. Here's why: Algalita's copyright notice appears on every page; no exceptions. But, PBase.com, the site Mr. Lawrence uses to host his photos, states that the copyright belongs to the owner, not to PBase. So, while it is true Mr. Lawrence's photograph appears with the copyright notice, "All images are © CW Lawrence 2003 - 2006. All rights reserved. Unauthorized use is prohibited", if Mr. Lawrence releases that photo to you, the problem is solved. This is different from Algalita, where you would have to get Charles Moore or an official representative of Algalita to release the photo because the copyright, according to the site, belongs to Algalita. But, PBase doesn't own the photo, Mr. Lawrence does. So, if he releases the photo to you, you shouldn't have a problem. However, it's unreasonable to expect Mr. Lawrence to change his copyright notice on PBase. I'm sorry it's so confusing, but hopefully that makes sense. Yes, Marieta Francis of the Algalita organization released the photo to you, but it's unclear if he she has permission to do so, especially when ABC News says that the photo belongs to Charles Moore and Algalita. Is Marieta Francis releasing the photo on behalf of Charles Moore as well? There's some confusion there, which is why it would be better if she contacted OTRS. But, in the case of Mr. Lawrence, it's clear he's releasing his photo to Wikipedia. PBase.com doesn't have a role to play here, as they state "all images are copyright of their owners" on their main page. So, if you have the owner's permission, then you are good to go. It's a little unclear if Marieta Francis represents the owner, or is releasing the photo on behalf of Algalita in an official capacity, or has the permission of Charles Moore, so there's a bit of an ambiguity there. Of course, this is my take on it; I'm sure someone will disagree. Viriditas (talk) 14:01, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
This would be an excellent solution, although the pic for that group of DYKs has been chosen. Daniel Case (talk) 19:44, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Why thank you! I usually edit and fix up country music articles, but I decided to fix up Etta James' because I really like Etta James and appreciate the great things she has done for American music. I also figured people are going to research her since, Beyonce is playing her in Cadillac Records, and they'll need a detailed article. Thnak you again, not many users appreciate what I do. - Thank you so much for the eel of excellence award!!!! It is my very first award, thank you so much. Don't worry, I will not forget about Etta James! Hawaii is ready for your new content...
I've changed the heading in Hawaii to Geography and environment. Please go ahead and add what you have in User:Anna Frodesiak/HawaiiEnviro to that section, under a new heading, such as "Environment". (remove the blockquote from the text before adding). I think this is fine for a preliminary summary style and will serve as a good starting point. Please add it, or a version of it. Obviously, we don't need subsections in the Hawaii article just yet, so I removed them. I would prefer to see two large paragraphs, rather than four, but do what you think is best. Viriditas (talk) 06:04, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
The majority of environmental concerns effecting Hawaii today are related to pressures from increasing human population in the limited space of the islands.[1] A number of plant species are now extinct due grazing livestock, and aggressive non-indigenous species taking over the land.[2] Almost 40% of the endangered species in the United States are Hawaiian species, while nearly 75% of all extinctions have occured in Hawaii.[3]
Native flora once composed 89% of endemic species, but now includes more than 1044 introduced plant species; More than 100 of these are likely to be invasive in natural areas. Species such as the Strawberry guava (Psidium cattleianum), and Christmasberry (Schinus terebinthifolius) have spread across wide areas, competing with native species and altering the natural ecosystem. Recent invaders like Miconia or Velvet tree (Miconia calvescens) and Himalayan raspberry (Rubus ellipticus) are now permanently established over large areas. These species are predicted to decrease watershed function.[4]
Prior to the arrival of non-natives, some bird species were made extinct, or pushed to near extinction from the collection of feathers by Native Hawaiians. With the arrival of James Cook in 1778, a new set of environmental threats emerged. Alien species such as cats , dogs, pigs, and rats affected a number of indigenous species. Hawaii is known as the "extinction capital of the world" with the extinction of nearly half (140) of its historically recorded native bird species.[5] Some of the alien species that are currently affecting Hawaii include: frogs, rabbits, Mediterranean, Oriental, and melon flies that damage crops, ants that destroy native insects, and bacteria that infect waters.[2]
Compared with the mainland United States, Hawaii's rating on the air quality index is ranked among the best. Approximately 47% of all emissions are caused by burning fossil fuel for electricity production. Ground transport is the second biggest contributor with 22%, while air transport contributes 19%. [6] The groundwater and drinking water quality is considered good, but the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands are affected by effluents generated and released from the islands themselves. Floating plastic garbage is a problem, and refuse from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is affecting beaches in Hawaii, such as Kamilo Beach.
- Nice! I assume you mean for me to add this text (above)and not the text from User:Anna Frodesiak/HawaiiEnviro as you mentioned above. The text above is nicely rewritten and the HawaiiEnviro text is unpolished. If I am making a mistake then please swap them. I will do some homework on the species you mention in HawaiiEnviro and add it to the new section. Please check to make sure I have done things right. By the way, love the way you fixed it. Thanks for your guidance and input.
- I will try to write a hook for Al Rosen. I am not looking forward to reading up on DYK. It looks long and confusing and I teach class all weekend. But, I have a couple of days still.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:48, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
- Great, but you have to expand Al Rosen to at least 1,500 characters of prose to qualify. Depending on how you measure it, I count at the minimum, anywhere between 893-1234 chars. leaving out the cats, refs, and infobox. So, a small expansion is required. I'll try and help if time allows, because I want to see you get a second DYK!! :) Viriditas (talk) 11:52, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
- I spent a half-hour looking for sources, but I could only find two - obituaries - and I don't have access to them at the moment. We are probably going to need them. I'll try again later. I'm going offline now. Viriditas (talk) 15:05, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

I looked for ages too. Info is really hard to find on this guy. I am trying to contact the people who own or worked on the show. Thanks for the effort!! I just made a new page [Monkey Island]. I can fatten this one up no problem. I can't quite figure out the disambig thingy due to CVLS (cranial volume limitation disorder)--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:10, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Peyronie's Edits
Please do not remove references to traction devices. The FastSize Extender was PROVEN in a medical study (ensure you READ sources) to correct the disease. Removing it is like removing chemotherapy from the Cancer wiki and refusing to believe it helps because you personally don't understand it and won't read medical facts. Several other editors have allowed it to stay. Bradmad (talk) 18:25, 16 December 2008 (UTC) Long and hard? Read it. The source points to the facts. Forget it, you editors are utterly hopeless. Hawaii charts
Anna, I haven't forgotten about the charts you want to upload. I can do that now (I'm going to recreate them for you) but I was wondering if you had some others in mind. Viriditas (talk) 02:22, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Ah, thanks. I would try to do it, but I haven't a clue how. I can give it a shot if you are busy. I don't have any others in mind.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:34, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- What I will do is upload a screenshot of multiple charts and have you pick one. Ok? Viriditas (talk) 06:56, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- BTW, if you want to learn, just go to OpenOffice.org and download the application. You can create the chart in calc or writer. There's a way in the app to export as an SVG file. Viriditas (talk) 07:01, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Cranial Volume Limitation Disorder
I just started a new article in your user space. Can you help me expand it? :) Viriditas (talk) 02:10, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
