WP:AFC Helper News
Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Cheers, Primefac, via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 15:59, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

- Hi @Publicduck. If you click on the footnote (the little blue box with the number) in the visual editor, it should bring up the full text of the reference. Then click on the edit button, and you should find the same reference editor again. If you want to, you can also try using the source editor, which will show all this in plaintext. This morning i am logged out, and all my work is lost.
What happened? Can i save my sandbox back?
Bruno, Rome, Italy --Brunobettati (talk) 11:10, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Brunobettati. Unfortunately, your edits are not automatically saved when you are away from your keyboard. If you forget to click the "Publish changes" button at the bottom of the editing window, your changes will only be kept in your web browser and not sent to Wikipedia's servers. If your browser then discards what you have written, there is no way to recover things. Alpha3031 (t • c) 12:56, 24 December 2022 (UTC)

Question from Diretolegal (14:38, 22 February 2023)
Hello! how do i write something so it will be published? thanks, --Diretolegal (talk) 14:38, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Diretolegal, the key to having an article published is finding significant coverage of the subject in independent reliable sources. You can see WP:Your First Article for more detail guidance, but the number one most important thing to do is to find a topic that has been written about in detail by major sources like the New York Times and summarising what is written in those sources. Alternatively, you may choose to make relevant expansion to existing articles, which is usually easier, simply click edit, add what you need to (again from reliable sources), add a reference to the end, add a summary of your edit and click publish to save things. Question from Thesahilshaikh on George Birnbaum (01:04, 29 March 2023)
How i use wikipedia --Thesahilshaikh (talk) 01:04, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Thesahilshaikh, you can make test edits at Wikipedia:Sandbox or at your own sandbox User:Thesahilshaikh/sandbox. If you're editing a live article, make sure your changes are factual and accurate and reference a reliable source if necessary. Alpha3031 (t • c) 12:38, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Question from Rifahhh (16:48, 4 May 2023)
How my profile available to the audience to look for ? --Rifahhh (talk) 16:48, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Rifahhh. If you're intending to publish a profile about yourself, Wikipedia isn't really the place to do that. Consider using Linkedin, Researchgate or some other social network relevant to your field. See also our guidance on autobiographical content, Wikipedia:Autobiography and this essay about articles about yourself. There is some room for very limited personal content on your user page, however, substantial content unrelated to Wikipedia is to be avoided. Alpha3031 (t • c) 10:21, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
Question from Chris
In reference to: Draft:FOREX.com. First part of your feedback mentions avoiding using references to 'wire services'. However, no such services are being mentioned anywhere in the submitted copy. There are 3 coincidental instances of 'wire', forming part of externally referred domain names (domainnamewire.com, newswire.ca and globenewswire.com). Could you, please, confirm this is not an issue? Chris at StoneX Group Inc. (talk) 16:24, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Chris, the fact that they are wire services aren't the problem, but they need to be evaluated against examples of trivial coverage and go significantly beyond that to be of any use. See also Wikipedia:Independent sources#Press releases. Failing either of those criteria, or the two other ones listed at WP:ORGCRIT, means that that specific source counts for naught in establishing notability and merely makes review slower. A lot of wire services primarily publish content that fail those criteria. Alpha3031 (t • c) 12:08, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Question from 110agha (22:00, 11 May 2023)
Hello. How can i start writing an article --110agha (talk) 22:00, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @110agha. Writing a new article that will be accepted is one of the most difficult things for a new editor to do — I would highly recommend trying to gain some experience in other places first, such as substantially expanding an existing article on a similar topic. However, we do have a guide for this very situation, Wikipedia:Your first article. The key thing to do is to find a topic area that does not already have an article, but have multiple, independent, high quality sources covering it in significant depth. Think three or four news articles each from a (preferably different) major news source directly covering it, and that's more or less the goal to aim for. Many topics can pass with less, some others will have additional requirements, but if you can find the best three that would be the best place to start. Alpha3031 (t • c) 14:00, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Question from Demógrafo (19:54, 26 May 2023)
--Demógrafo (talk) 19:54, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

He just keep doing this. I found this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism but still dont know how. --Tusk001 (talk) 05:19, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Tusk001. I see you were able to submit the report before I got back to you, but I do highly recommend checking out Wikipedia:Twinkle or a similar tool if you ever want to do more patrolling work. It automates many of these common actions, and makes them so much easier. Of course, making it easier does mean that it's more important to think things through and use things responsibly, but if you have any concerns or questions about using it I'll be happy to answer when I'm next available. Question
hi @Alpha3031,
I recently updated the page titled "List of highest-grossing Malayalam films" with proper references. However, someone reverted my changes and posted a warning template on my talk page, accusing me of vandalism. I have decided not to engage in further reverts, as it may lead to me being blocked. What steps should I take to address this situation? Tusk001 (talk) 04:55, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Tusk001. I see the immediate situation is resolved for now, but the most common way of handling disputes in editing is the "Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle", which it basically what it says. The best place to start such a discussion would be on the article talk page, so that any people who are watching the article will also see it and participate. If you're not able to reach agreement with the other editor, Wikipedia:Dispute resolution has a list of venues you can go to for further input. In simple cases where there are only two people participating Wikipedia:Third opinion is usually the easiest option. Alpha3031 (t • c) 07:01, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the helpful information and guidance on how to handle editing disputes. I appreciate your prompt response! Tusk001 (talk) 10:12, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

Question from MentalWikiV2 (14:28, 10 June 2023)
Where is the help desk --MentalWikiV2 (talk) 14:28, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @MentalWikiV2, you can find the help desk by clicking this link here: Wikipedia:Help Desk. You may also find the Wikipedia:Teahouse helpful. Looks like I missed your previous question as well, you can find the instructions for inserting images at Help:Pictures. Just insert the code where you want the image to go. Speedy deletion declined: ATHLYT
Hello Alpha3031, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of ATHLYT, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not unambiguously promotional. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 19:05, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
Antigen Masking Indirect Antiglobulin Test
Hello Alpha3031, thank you for your quick review! I understand your point about the first reference. I left it in the new version nevertheless, because it is the first reference that gives the technique a name. Secondary literature seems not to have picked that up so far. I've added two secondary references to meet quality criteria. References 4 and 5 are original peer reviewed research articles that first mention and develop the method, though not giving it a name. I would leave them in. Reference 6 shows that the method in principle also works for CD47 but only on the side - if that is not enough, maybe CD47 should not be mentioned at all. Best regards, Frank 217.91.155.161 (talk) 12:21, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry, please add 1 to all references mentioned. 217.91.155.161 (talk) 13:22, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

Question from Puyela (15:54, 7 August 2023)
hey there! i was editing a biography on Wikipedia and it was flagged, they said i violated a rule which i had no idea about and i wrote to them that i was new to the system and i requested i rewrite it but no, they deleted my sandbox --Puyela (talk) 15:54, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Puyela. I can't see the whole article, but what I can see is not at all appropriate for an encyclopedia. Rewriting from scratch is likely your best option here, and try to avoid any words from Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Words to watch or anything even remotely similar. For example, you should not find the phrase
profound thirst for knowledge
on any Wikipedia article. If you do, it should most likely be removed. Alpha3031 (t • c) 05:10, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Question from White Rabbitfish (18:44, 21 August 2023)
Hi there! Thank you so much for mentoring me! I wonder if you might know why my draft page has disappeared?!?! --White Rabbitfish (talk) 18:44, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi White Rabbitfish. It looks like your draft was removed because it met G11, which means that it was found to unacceptably promotional. In plainer terms (while I can't actually see the contents of a removed article) this usually happens when the article looks similar to what you would find in a resume or CV. CVs are problematic for Wikipedia for multiple reasons, for example, they are also typically not sourced to the types of sources articles need to be written from, for example, sources need to be both independent and secondary (see Wikipedia:Party and person). For more detail, Wikipedia:Autobiography and Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide offer guidance on these situations (the first one covers more than just autobiographies). Question from Exbrauer (21:28, 24 August 2023)
Hi I'd like to start a draft about a band, what are the first steps in doing so? --Exbrauer (talk) 21:28, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Exbrauer, we have a help page for just this purpose: Help:Your first article. Once you've had a read through of it, let me know if you have any other questions. Otherwise, you can click one of the blue buttons there to get a draft started, and make sure to save your work regularly by clicking the publish changes button when editing! Question from Tinaosr (10:54, 7 September 2023)
hi, how should i start posting or engaging on wikipedia --Tinaosr (talk) 10:54, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Tinaosr, that's a pretty broad question. I guess to start with it would depend on what your interests are. Do you have a specific topic area that you're interested in? You can help expand articles in that topic. The sight of typos bother you? Sign up to do some copyediting. No matter what you pick, there's likely going to be a lot of work to do, and people or tools to help you get started. Check out Wikipedia:Citation Hunt, for example, if you think you've got what it takes to find some sources. Alpha3031 (t • c) 15:05, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from Mvdjio on Draft:How to help young teenagers to grow. (19:58, 17 September 2023)
hello how to write a piece of novel --Mvdjio (talk) 19:58, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Mvdjio, I see you're writing a draft titled Draft:How to help young teenagers to grow. If this is what you're asking about Wikipedia usually does not normally have how to guides. However, our sister project Wikibooks has some content at b:Parenting, which you may be able to help expand to cover teens! Make sure you cite the specific sources you get each piece of information from, not just google. Alpha3031 (t • c) 06:02, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted
Hi Alpha3031. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:
- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
- Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
- Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. – Joe (talk) 13:51, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
