Fair use rationale for Image:IPID Probe.GIF
[edit]Image:IPID Probe.GIF is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Copyrighted text removed
[edit]The section I've just removed is taken verbatim from http://nmap.org/book/idlescan.html, even down to the final reference to "the next section", which made no sense in the placement in wikipedia. The original nmap article is clearly copyright (Copyright © 2010 by Insecure.Com LLC. All rights reserved, except where noted) and I can find no evidence of any creative-commons type licence being applied, so I've removed it, which I hope is an acceptable thing to do.

Improvement
[edit]Added references, jargoon explained, a new header with basic knowledge of TCP/IP added, evaluation requested --Pastore Italy (talk) 10:26, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
- I have completed an evaluation, made a few improvements, tagged problems. I was not able to raise the rating mainly due to WP:NOTHOWTO. --Kvng (talk) 13:00, 22 October 2010 (UTC)
Question about second stage of scan
[edit]If the port really was open, the idea is that the RST that the zombie sent to the attacker would have been of IPID number 31338, thus making the next probe show the number as 31339. I am quite sure this is an error, as it would only increase by one in the event that the port was closed or filtered.
I believe it is definitely wrong, as the numbers of the IPID match up with this picture, on which the diagram is likely based. http://www.ouah.org/Idlescan_Technique.gif — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.114.141.84 (talk) 23:03, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- Confirming it is an error. It should say 37339 79.33.126.228 (talk) 13:29, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
