British or American
Hi. I hope you (being American) are neutral and don't reject British English (see: Wikipedia:Neutral point of view); and you didn't fix everything, for example on one page you restored a word I had written in British English, but not the other terms. JacktheBrown (talk) 13:05, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- @JackkBrown I've been trying to restore the status quo, mostly just removing the British English tag and leaving it neutral, and only changing it to American English in a few rare cases where the article had clear Americanisms ("cookie", "flavor", etc.) and no British spellings. I've been trying to leave your British English tag in cases where British spelling was already being used. If I missed a few or misjudged the status-quo, feel free to point it out to me or revert my changes. --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE) 13:23, 15 May 2024 (UTC)- @Ahecht: regarding the other articles I don't know, but is the bruschetta page written ONLY in American English? JacktheBrown (talk) 13:30, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- @JackkBrown, they actually could have used rollback, per WP:ROLLBACKUSE.
- Re: Bruschetta, it looks like it's in AmEng except for appetiser, which it looks like you changed from appetizer? Valereee (talk) 13:38, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Valereee: if the article is written ENTIRELY in American English, "appetiser" is incorrect. But if both English (except "appetiser-appetizer") are used, it's fair to choose which one to use. JacktheBrown (talk) 13:41, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I changed it yesterday; that's why I asked if the article is written entirely (except for that term) in American English. JacktheBrown (talk) 13:42, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- @JackkBrown, are you asking whether as a native speaker of AmEng, I can confirm that it appears to be written in AmEng? Yes. Maybe as a person whose native tongue is Italian, you should stop changing anything to BrEng. It's disruptive. I feel like I should probably go check all your edits. Which is a huge undertaking, as I am so comfortable with both variants that not everything even jumps out at me. When did you start doing this? Valereee (talk) 14:12, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

- Oh, is that what you've been working from, thanks! Valereee (talk) 14:26, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Valereee: just check the most common words ("'flavor", "recognized", "'appetizer" (especially these three), "color", etc.) and get a bot to work, or even Ahecht, which has done a great job so far. JacktheBrown (talk) 14:32, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- Ahecht, would you like to continue the work? Obviously, I don't want to rush you. JacktheBrown (talk) 14:54, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

- @Valereee Actually, in this case, because AnomieBot went and dated all the tags after they were placed, I can't do a simple rollback (at least not from the Contribs page). As for Bruscetta, as of Special:Permalink/1176284276 it was entirely American English ("appetizer"). --Ahecht (TALK

I received your ping, but I only saw it after you had already removed the message with this edit. What was the reason for removing the message? I am fine with withdrawing the request. I should checked more thoroughly first. I was just confused on the back-and-forth with the response being added and then taken down only a few moments later. Aoba47 (talk) 01:33, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

You're doing a great job; you have corrected other things too, thank you very much! Of course I have no doubts about you, but I would like to know if you have deleted only my additions concerning British English or if you have also changed the consolidated English of some articles; thank you very much for your work. JacktheBrown (talk) 22:22, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- There have been a few articles where I've come across an earlier switch that I've reverted (such as this 2014 edit to Ossobuco) and a few where I've changed mixed usage to British English to reflect earlier established usage. --Ahecht (TALK

Hi, the pizza article has problems. A long time ago, the "Use British English" template was inserted, and not by me (so it's consolidated), but I noticed that there are non-English terms, such as "flavor"; I don't know all the American variants, could you take care of that? Thanks in advance. Update: I added the template, a month ago (I didn't remember it); here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pizza&diff=prev&oldid=1220888505.

- I think Ahecht has a point; that first version was a sentence. Jack, why are you arguing this so hard? It's simply not that important, and as I've told you many times, this rule was put into place to prevent this kind of disruption. Not because the variant of English is important. Wikipedia literally doesn't care which variant is used; at most we care that it's consistent within an article. Valereee (talk) 19:02, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Yuna Kim A-class assessment
Hi Ahecht, Yuna Kim is up for an A-class assessment and it's currently languishing because we haven't been able to find a third reviewer. This bio is the first A-class assessment by WikiProject Figure Skating; see here for more information. I notice that while you don't tend to contribute to figure skating articles, you are an active and experienced editor and you've made at least a few edits to Kim's bio in the past. Would you mind helping us out? It'd be muchly appreciated. Thanks, Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 23:13, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

refresh.js purge mode issues
Hello, User:Ahecht/Scripts/refresh.js doesn't seem to work when the purge link is pressed. An error is raised because postFail
is not defined and for the API request that goes through, it complains that the title
parameters should be titles
. Also, using a static tag for the call to mw.notify
so a single popup is updated rather than generating a new one each time would be nice. Otherwise, the null edit mode seems to be working really well. Thanks, – BrandonXLF (talk) 22:22, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
- @BrandonXLF Thanks for letting me know. This is a combination of two things -- I did some modifications to the purge function a year ago to try to avoid the API timing out but it causes the title/titles error, and I recently did some updates to the null edit feature which seems to have broken the error message. I did a quick fix so both work now, although the purge function will be fairly slow since I'm purging one at a time (the API allows 50 at a time, but it times out when I try to actually do that many, so I still need to find out where the "sweet spot" is).
- As for re-using the bubbles, having them stack was intentional, but you can put
var refreshReuseBubble = true;
in your common.js above the call to refresh.js to change this behavior. --Ahecht (TALK

- @BrandonXLF A non-recursive link update doesn't seem to make much of a difference. I have a version in the sandbox that sets the number of pages to purge at a time to the minimum required to make the ratelimit on par with that for null editing (so 3 at a time for normal users, 1 at a time for admins since they don't have a purge rate limit), but I'll have to test it more before making it live. --Ahecht (TALK

randomincategory not working at least for fa-wikipedia
Hi. Thank you for creating Random page in category tool. This is awesome and I've been using it for a long time.
I was trying to open a random page from this category on fa-wikipedia and noticed that the tool is not working and returns an error saying "There are no pages in the رده:حذف زماندار منقضی شده category on fa.wikipedia.org." This link is the one I used and encountered the error. The tool is fine when you set the server on enwiki.
Can you please take a look at the issue? Thanks. Jeeputer Talk 16:50, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Jeeputer I can't read Farsi, but are you including the equivalent of "Category:" in the URL (for example, https://randomincategory.toolforge.org/Category:Fish instead of https://randomincategory.toolforge.org/Fish)? It may not be filtering that out correctly due to it being a right-to-left language. --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE) 00:32, 11 August 2024 (UTC)- Yes. I've tried both forms with and without namespace prefix and it does not work in either way. The tool used to work a few months ago. The page's title has a Zero-width non-joiner character, if it can help to debug. I can see that character is encoded into the URL I provided above: "حذف_زمان%E2%80%8Cدار_منقضی_شده". Maybe decoding URI components can help. Jeeputer Talk 00:39, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Jeeputer Thanks for the update. The only change that was made in the last few months was adding a maximum size limit for categories, but something in that new code must be breaking on Farsi titles. I did a partial rollback which fixed the issue, but I'll have to put a more permanent fix into place at some point in the future. --Ahecht (TALK

Hi, the edit history indicates that you implemented this module in June. There's something wrong with the way the notes column is handled. On articles with notes, such as Grade I listed buildings in Maidstone and Grade I listed buildings in Derbyshire, the notes are appearing in the Grid ref. Geo-coordinates column with the intended contents of the subsequent columns pulled into the previous columns - so that Entry Number appears in the Notes column, etc.. Would you see if you can fix the placement. DavidCane (talk) 13:23, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

- @Dabao qian That's a great idea, and it was certainly on my to-do list until I looked deeper into those templates and realized just how much work would be involved in integrating them. "Collapsible groups" can already be replaced by using a child groups, swapping
|groupN=
for|N_title=
, swapping|groupstyle=
for|N_titlestyle=
, and swapping|abbrN=ABBREVIATION
forN_state = {{#ifeq:{|ABBREVIATION|uncollapsed|{collapsed}}}
. For example, the first group in Template:Navbox_with_collapsible_groups#Basic_example could be replaced with a normal navbox that used |list1 = subgroup |1_title = <span style="color:#00008B;">Academics</span> |1_titlestyle=background:#FFD700;color:#00008B; |1_state = {{#ifeq:{|academics|uncollapsed|{collapsed}}} |1_list1 = * College of Engineering * College of Literature, Science and the Arts * [[Gerald R. pageswap tag
Hey Ahecht. I really appreciate your pageswap script, and I like that it now includes a link back to the script. As I'm sure you've run into, there are occasionally some rather long move summaries in which the end gets cut off. E.g., this diff or this log entry for two recent technical requests.
To save on characters in move summaries, rather than using "(using pageswap GUI)", you could ask an admin to create a tag for the script via Special:Tags.
The only change you would need to make to the script to add the tag to all its edits is to replace the three instance in User:Ahecht/Scripts/pageswap-core.js of
watchlist: params.watch
with
watchlist: params.watch, tags: 'pageswap'
And a wikilink can be added to the tag via MediaWiki:Tag-pageswap – such as pageswap GUI

- @MSGJ It really depends on how much you're familiar with Javascript. Most of my script writing has been based on taking other people's logic and adding features, fixing bugs, or improving the UI (the draft sorter script was based on User:Enterprisey/draft-sorter, my pageswap script was based on User:Andy M. Wang/pageswap, my templatesearch script was based on User:SiBr4/TemplateSearch.js, etc.), so my suggestion would be to find a script that's close enough to what you want to do and dry to decode it. mapframe directly so it doesn't count as Lua time
That looks like an interesting trick. May prevent so much use of cache purging to clean up pages as more than about 5 seconds usual Lua time use can break pages badly after an edit if the back end server infrastructure has problems. I will see how it works on a heavily edited page by vandals perhaps best after you have pointed me towards the #tag documentation and then roll out to the other pages that I know call big raw geojson templates ChaseKiwi (talk) 23:35, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

Hi Ahecht, it looks like KiwiIRC.com is down (again, and again for a few days), so the redirector isn't working. I've opened a PR to use Libera Chat's own hosted instance which I think is a bit more stable for any connections to Libera Chat, though I would consider having some configurable target webchat instance a better option for the longer term. Administrator Elections: Call for Candidates
Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates
The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Call for candidates.
Here is the schedule:
- October 8–14 - Candidate sign-up (we are here)
- October 22–24 - Discussion phase
- October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
Please note the following:
- The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
- Prospective candidates are advised to become familar with the community's expectations of adminstrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
- The process will have a one week call for candidates phase, a one week pause to set up SecurePoll, a three-day period of public discussion, followed by 7 days of no public discussion and a private vote using SecurePoll.
- The outcomes of this process are identical to making requests for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA or administrator elections.
- Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.
Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.
To avoid sending too many messages, this will be the last mass message sent about administrator elections. If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

Use a colon instead of a period
Could User:Ahecht/Scripts/pageswap-core.js please be updated so that when one of the common move reasons at the "Swap" form is selected, it will be followed by a colon instead of a period in the move log entries (like at Special:Redirect/logid/164530745, for example)? The behavior is currently inconsistent with the one at Special:MovePage, where a colon (not a period) would appear in the move log entries, e.g., at Special:Redirect/logid/164552365. Administrator Elections: Candidate instructions
Thank you for choosing to run in the October 2024 administrator elections. This bulletin contains some important information about the next stages of the election process.
As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:
- October 15–21: SecurePoll setup phase
- October 22–24: Discussion phase
- October 25–31: SecurePoll voting phase
- November 1–?: Scrutineering phase
We are currently in the SecurePoll setup phase. Your candidate subpage will remain closed to questions and discussion. However, this is an excellent opportunity for you to recruit nominators (if you want them) and have them place their nomination statements, and a good time for you to answer the standard three questions, if you have not done so already. We recommend you spend the SecurePoll setup phase from October 15–21 getting your candidate page polished and ready for the next phase.
The discussion phase will take place from October 22–24. Your candidate subpage will open to the public and they will be permitted to discuss you and ask you formal questions, in the same style as a request for adminship (RfA). Please make sure you are around on those dates to answer the formal questions in a timely manner.
On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. Anyone can see who has voted, but not who they voted for. You are permitted and encouraged to vote in the election, including voting for yourself. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see your tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RfA.
Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, you must have received at least 70% support, calculated as support ÷ (support + oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("'crat chats").
Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation as a candidate, and best of luck.

Our Admin Election Test
Hello there. As we're preparing to move from one stage to the next, this is just a quick note from one member of the test group to another, wishing you well in the process of this new alternative to RfA. It seems that there are more of us in this group than some in the community anticipated, so i hope that doesn't make the experience any the worse for all of us.
