Comment/question: Hi, I was doing vandal patrol, fixed the anon's messing with the page, went to the talk page and saw a note from your bot about bracket syntax. I totally understand that your bot has a specific purpose, and that it's not an anti-vandal bot, but perhaps there would be a way to add in some sort of filter which would allow it to recognize that the edit should be reverted. But then again, I don't know that your bot has permission for that. Just a thought anyway. Cheers.
Wine Guy~Talk 22:10, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- Maybe my answers on this page give a lopsided image, but I'd say that far too often it's either a false positive or a minor issue as part of a larger good-faith edit to tag these edits for reversal. Huon (talk) 00:23, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply, makes perfect sense to me. I think it was ClueBot (or similar) that tagged it for human review anyway, that's how I came across it in the first place. What would WP do without our bot army? Thanks again. -Wine Guy~Talk 13:36, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Comment/question: BracketBot detected unpaired brackets in a ref tag using the cite web template. The link in the references goes to a Twitter, and when viewing a single tweet, the title of the page (document.title) is the beginning of that single tweet. The tweet that I referenced is surrounded in parentheses, but the document title is truncated, so the closing parenthesis is absent from the page title. I hope that clears up why there is an unclosed single parenthesis in the article. Thanks.
Purkinje90 (talk) 21:05, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Interesting problem. I'm not quite sure whether taking the document title as the "title=" parameter is the best solution, but I don't really have a better one beyond using the entire tweet as "title". Huon (talk) 05:18, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Comment/question: My changing the brackets was not necessary, it is the side effect of using http://code.google.com/p/wiki-java/. On reading the page it resolves all xml-entities (such as & < >) and on writing it inserts them only when they are really needed. Thus, extra entities are always eliminated, on any edit.
I reviewed the change manually and it seems that it did not break the layout, and your bot's warning was a false alarm.

- For inexperienced editors I'd suggest using the Article Wizard. That will guide you through the article creation process and lets you write a draft that you can submit for a review by an experienced editor. Technically you can immediately start writing live articles by typing the name into the search bar and following the You may create the page "Page title" link, but articles in the mainspace are immediately subject to intense scrutiny and may be up for deletion if they don't conform to Wikipedia's policies, while a draft suffering the same flaws would simply fail review and could be improved and re-submitted. - This is a false positive. The bot keeps track of the "less than" and "greater than" symbols because they're used for HTML tags, and forgetting one in that context could easliy break an entire page's layout. It doesn't realize when they're just used in the mathematical sense and thus often produces "warnings" for entirely correct edits in that context. When the bot does notify you, it notifies you about all mismatched brackets, not just about those it thinks you added. In this case one of the references had a surplus square bracket. Fixed. I have reverted the edit because firstly the page's author, User:Sethi007, seems likely to be Ravi Sethi and thus have a conflict of interest when writing about himself, and secondly, whether the links are active is irrelevant to whether the pages linked to are reliable by Wikipedia's standards, and the reliability of at least some of the given sources is indeed rather dubious. Early history [edit source | editbeta] The RVT was built in 1863 at Spring Gardens, Kennington Lane, on land which was originally part of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. It started life as a Victorian music hall [citation needed]. After the war, returning servicemen and local gay men were attracted to the venue, which held shows of female impersonators, the forerunner of drag shows.[2] By 1975, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern had two bars around a kidney shaped bar which doubled as a stage for the drag artists to dance along in their stilettos from the tiny apron stage at one end. Prior to the cabaret starting the bar would be cleared of glasses and drinks and the staff would clean the bar ready for the drag to dance along it in their heels. The public bar attracted local workers and had a dart board whilst the lounge attracted the local gay community. Notable acts from this era include "Carla", famous for her Barbra Streisand impersonation and "The Great Lee Paris" on a Saturday night with Land of Hope and Glory , and There'll always be an England.[3]Freddie Mercury was also a frequent visitor during the seventies.[4] At this time the words "The Palladium of Drag" adorned the exterior of the building. Also during 1976 [Roy Alvis] staged an all male revue both at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern and The Union Tavern, Camberwell New Road. The revue spawned a four piece all male cabaret group called 'The Boys Plus' In the space of a couple of months this group was seen in residencies all over the London drag circuit....The Union, The Vauxhall, the Black cap and the Cock (Lewisham). The group only lasted a couple of years but set the trend for shows in the 21st century such as Funny Girls in Blackpool The RVT survived local redevelopment throughout the seventies and eighties and has managed to maintain its independence as a gay venue. Many of London's top drag artists have appeared at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, including Hinge and Bracket, and Diana Dors.[5]A resident for eight years and probably most famous entertainer, with shows four times a week, was Paul O'Grady's Lily Savage.[6] The venue came under attack from the developers in the nineties, when Lambeth Council entered into a three year agreement with a developer and announced plans to build a shopping centre on the site.[7] Recent history [edit source | editbeta] In September 2005, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern and the freehold land were purchased by two entrepreneurial businessmen Paul Oxley and James Lindsay. With a heavy financial investment and a refurbishment programme of works providing a new lighting and sound system, new male and female toilets, a much enhanced bar layout, complete refrigeration to provide cold beer and drinks was installed together with a huge internal and external make over, a completely new point of sale system, full air conditioning was installed inside. The venue was a depressed business operating two days a week. The business is now a vibrant joint-venture enterprise, which provides unique experimental theatre, performance art, music, cabaret, and club nights of the highest calibre whilst enhancing the reputation as an avant-garde central London performance venue. The premises have been totally transformed to become a local, national and European brand which operates well within its niche cultivated market. It is now open seven nights a week and still consistently maintains its popularity.[8] For full details of the venue and what it provides in entertainment visit our new visionary website at: www.rvt.org.uk DUCKIE - EVERY SATURDAY Duckie was founded in November 1995 as a collective of gay club runners and performance pedlars. Since then we have run our flagship rock'n'roll homo-disco at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern every Saturday platforming entertainment for mainly LGBT punters. Prior to that Jonathan Hellyer's Dame Edna Experience was the resident act for 14 years and helped the club to become an institution on the gay scene and became extremely popular [citation needed]. SLAGS/Chill-Out attracts a large number of devotees from all over London and further afield. In addition to Charlie Hides the event is supported by resident DJ's Simon Le Vans, Andy Almighty and Sean Sirrs who play a mixture of dance anthems and commercial house from 2pm until midnight. The Dame Edna Experience was voted the Best Cabaret Act for 2011 (Pink Paper reader's awards).[10]
OVERVIEW The award winning Royal Vauxhall Tavern is one of London’s most celebrated alternative performance venues. It has a unique history of live performance and social notoriety dating back to 1865, when the present pub was first built, and back even further with the famous Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens during the 18th century. It has been the stomping ground for performers ranging from Lily Savage (Paul O’Grady), David Hoyle, the Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs, jazz diva Gill Manly and comedian Zoe Lyons. Top names appearing on the stage include Julian Clary, Graham Norton, Justin Bond, Vivain Westward, Diana Dors, Stephen Fry, Bob Downe, Ken Livingston, Stephen Merchant and many others. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern continues to be one of the best venues to see exciting and innovative cabaret in a warm, friendly atmosphere. We present bingo, comedy, music and more diverse choices every night of the week, along with club nights such as the legendary Duckie. Princess Diana came to see what it was all about and could be heard giggling at the entertainment. The RVT keeps going from strength to strength. Saturdays Duckie was founded in November 1995 as a collective of gay club runners and performance pedlars. Since then Duckie have run their flagship rock'n'roll homo-disco at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern every Saturday platforming entertainment for mainly LGBT punters. For 18 years Duckie has been led by the same core team of six faces - hostess Amy Lamé, promoter Simon Casson, disc jockeys Readers Wifes and doorwhores Jay Cloth & Father Cloth. In the early days of the 90’s Duckie ran a myriad of club nights at various London venues. Notable nights were ‘Duckie Dancehall’, ‘Art Skool’ and ‘Inn-Difference’ at the New Connaught Rooms, ‘Viva Apathy’ and ‘Wig’n’Casino’ at the Market Tavern, ‘The Youth Club’ and ‘Big Girls Blouse’ at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, ‘Duckie Up West’ at The Eve Club and many others. Duckie were at the zeitgeist of alternative post-queer culture creating a punky opposition to the mainstream hegemony of the dominant commercial gay club scene. The media thus defined Duckie and their co-horts as spearheading the ‘Anti-Gay’ movement. Performance on Duckie’s Saturday night at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern are limited to short pieces presented in a cabaret style followed by the unique musical style of the ever popular Reader Wifes. Duckie found themselves the engine-room of the vibrant post-queer performance culture. From 1998, Duckie began to develop full-length shows and unusual interactive theatrical events devised with their key artists such as the incredible show; The Reader Wifes Fan Club. Check out Duckie website at http://www.duckie.co.uk Sundays Charlie Hides is now the resident performer on the famous Sunday tea party, taking to the stage at 5.30pm. Charlie has recently replaced The D E Experience who was the Sunday Stalwart for15 years. For those with a long memory or DOB they wish to forget (or have forgotten) the D.E Experience took over from Addrella who also graced the Sunday stage for15 years. These performers are intrinsic in what has made The Royal Vauxhall Tavern a worldwide institution. Others, Timberlina's Monday bingo night has become a staple part of a student night out. Ultra-inclusive performance mixer Wotever on Tuedays and top cabaret performance on Wednesday and Thursdays has completed the line up. Regular runs amongst many on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s include the legendary David Hoyle, Scott Capurro, Dusty Limits and Bob Down. More recently, Amanda Wilson, Peyton and Adam Kay have appeared live at RVT. Fridays have become a strong destination running one Friday a month in rotation. Look out for once a month entertainment providing Push the Button, Anthem, Hot Fuzz, the LipSinkers and Eurofest. Visit http://www.rvt.org.uk for tickets. The RVT always adopts a policy of retaining tickets for sales on the door on the night. HAF – Hot August Fringe This is our fifth year of Royal Vauxhall Tavern presenting one of London’s most unique performance festivals with yet another great collection of shows and artists as they use the venue to launch their careers at this award winning venue. This year once more, the team has brought together an exciting line up of performers with established and up and coming acts all creating fresh work for this small but perfectly formed festival. The RVT Hot August Fringe (www.hotaugustfringe.com) includes comedy, avant garde performance art, cabaret and new material from established and new artists. £7.00 a ticket, for the performance of your choice, then a donation into the famous yellow bucket for further shows if you wish to stay. Check out the HAF website at http://www.hotaugustfringe.com RVT/GMFA Sports Day A date for your diary not to be missed, the high profile annual RVT/GMFA sports day, a community event on the August bank holiday Monday. The "scandal" drew a mixture of credulity and merriment in the press and at first was thought by many to be an April fool’s joke. In fact it was a very real personal visit for Princess Diana, Freddie Mercury and Kenny Everett.

- As the licensing tag at commons:File:Noelia.jpg says, if you are indeed the copyright holder of that image, you should send a mail confirming the licensing to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org - if you have already done so, a tag to that effect should soon be added to the image page. However, it's not enough to release the image so that Wikipedia may use it royalty-free; to be acceptable, it must be released under a license that allows everybody to re-use and modify it for any purpose, including commercial purposes (so I'd be allowed to produce Noelia merchandise with that image, for example). I have also fixed the bracket issues the bot originally notified you about, and I've removed some content that was only based on press releases - those are not considered reliable sources, plus a paragraph whose source didn't confirm the content. Comment/question: This is the time I should write HELP. A one-sided view is presented here under the subject Ethnic Germans. Afrikaners are not ethnic Germans but a diverse mix of many ethnicities. It frustrates me that people write info here which is neither representative nor unbiased. Example 1: Paul Kruger, a leader from a previous (pre-apartheid era) is considered a Boer (or in modern vernacular) Afrikaner, yet his ancestral grandmother (6 times removed) is Krotoa or Eva, the Khoi translator of the VOC official Jan Van Riebeeck. Is he an ethnic German, you think? Example 2: My daughters' father was born in Germany and I am a 12-generation Afrikaner or African. Are my children 'ethnic German'?
I believe Wikipedia should define exactly its terms of reference for a subject to avoid biased and false information being flaunted as fact.
197.78.137.245 (talk) 15:12, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- You are in the wrong place. That should be discussed at the article's talk page, not the talk page of a bot that notified you about mismatched brackets. That said, I have reverted your changes because we have to follow what the sources say, not present personal anecdotes as fact. The sources only describe the German settlers intermarrying with the Dutch, and they only discuss German ethnicity in Afrikaners. If you want to discuss German heritage or ethnicity in English-speaking inhabitants of South Africa you'll have to find a source to that effect. Huon (talk) 04:54, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

- While that's not what the bot brought up, the <ref> tag at the beginning of a footnote must be accompanied by a </ref> tag at the end, or things will go very wrong - large parts of the article will be interpreted as part of one large footnote instead of being displayed properly. Comment/question: Thank you for your intervention at the article I was updating: Andy Irvine (musician).
I appreciate the effort everyone makes, including you, to keep the encyclopedia at the highest possible level of quality.
In this specific case, I had copied a 'ref' tag that I wanted to re-use somewhere else in the article. However, since that 'ref' tag had previously been imbedded in a 'quotation' tag, I mistakenly also copied the two '}}' that ended the 'quotation' tag and pasted the lot where I wanted the new 'ref' tag to be. Then, I modified this new 'ref' tag and realized that these two '}}' were now superfluous, since this second 'ref' tag was not imbedded in a 'quotation' tag in this instance. So, I removed these now 'rogue' '}}', which is what your bot must have detected prior to re-instating them.
I have now gone back and removed these unrequired '}}', and all is well that ends well.
Once again, I appreciate your intervention, as these two '}' might indeed have been deleted in error if the circumstances had been different. But, since they are really unwanted in this case, I have reversed your recent intervention in the subject article.
Thank you. With kind regards; Patrick. Pdebee (talk) 16:14, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

What was unclear about that? You had accidentally left one square bracket while removing an external link, and you subsequently fixed that. The bot also lists mismatched "<>" symbols because they are used in HTML tags and mismatching those could lead to some serious errors, but that's not how they were used here; those are false positives. - Two of the reference templates were broken. I fixed one although I found that source highly dubious (it did not at all say that the game was "released or announced") and removed the other outright - YouTube isn't reliable, and the video in question didn't even mention the PS4. Mebryans (talk) 02:40, 23 August 2013 (UTC) I am Michael Bryans, 3 Crispin Private, Ottawa, Ontario William Taylor Bryans (Billy) was my older brother by five years. The story about him being Jack Layton's high school classmate is impossible and fanciful. Hudson HIgh School where Mr. Layton says he attended is 20 miles from Pointe Claire. Bill attended another high school not far from our home called John Rennie High School. We both went to Lindsay Place school to graduate. Bill did not know, nor could he have known, Mr. Layton when this dopey story says he could. I was there. Neither you nor Mr. Layton were.
- BracketBot is an automated program that notifies users of mismatched brackets so they can be repaired. It doesn't claim to have been anywhere. The source on the Layton-Bryant connection doesn't say they were classmates (unlikely given the age difference), but it does say Lawton credited Bryant with his high school election success. - For Rock Island, Illinois you had used a curly bracket instead of a parenthesis; there was also an older mismatched parenthesis mentioned by the bot. Fixed.
- For Even Stevens you had not only removed various red links but also added a lone mismatched parenthesis. I reverted the entire edit; even though we don't currently have articles on those actors we can conceivably write articles in the future; they are not inherently unsuitable topics. - Technically the file is misnamed, but more to the point, BracketBot cannot determine when mismatched brackets are part of a file name and thus errs on the side of caution and points out all mismatches. Huon (talk) 19:47, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Comment/question:My edit was fine I think, I was splitting a table involving Template:EH listed building header, which means adding the header template plus a closing end bracket for each subtable, hence no matching opening bracket.
Aegoceras (talk) 14:20, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
- You're right, but I don't think there's a way to teach the bot which templates might serve as table headers - that would also change over time if new such templates are created. Huon (talk) 00:22, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

JudyCS (talk) 17:48, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
- It does its best to show you which brackets it considers mismatched. It highlighted the "[" you caused (and fixed; thanks for that!), and while it's at it, it also highlights all other brackets it considers mismatched, here the various ">" in the New York Times reference. BracketBot keeps track of those because they're used in HTML tags, but this is a false positive. Huon (talk) 18:25, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

I was notified about two examples of unpaired brackets. I fixed the one I was responsible for ( the second one in a sentence in the section dealing Jim's fiber optic patent, specifically 'dispersion'. ) I may fix the other one when I find the time. No promises though.

RE Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to 2013 Championship 1 season results may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "{}"s. The edits I've made to this page are related to selected icons which appear on the page. I've had to use (as one example) as there is no entry for {{leagueicon}} under the name of the team Hemel Stags and without knowing how to add this to that database I replaced the previous {{leagueicon|doncaster|22px}} with the above as the Doncaster colours were incorrect for this team. The other two changes I made were in the same vain.

If my content is to be removed can I be instructed on how I can modify exsisting {{leagueicon}} tables so as not to break syntax in future.
SubsonicViper (talk) 18:17, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
- What BracketBot pointed out was that you had forgotten to remove one curly bracket, though that didn't actually break the syntax. Fixed. The colors themselves look good to me, though it may be more efficient to just list them once and not repeat them every time that team is named. Huon (talk) 22:39, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
