BracketBot dumping on my talk page
Your bot is rather annoying and I'd rather it didn't dump all over my talk as soon as I make a silly mistake, which I usually see and correct. How about factoring in (say) an hour's delay to allow editors to notice and fix their errors? I appreciate that it's handy to be told when one's messed up, but please show us some grace! Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:11, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
- The idea is to catch the editor in the same editing session, but consideration is being given to doubling the waiting time. 930913(Congratulate) 05:55, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Welcoming vandalism accounts
It's a nice friendly thought to post a welcome template on new talkpages at the same time as you tell them they made a mistake with brackets. Maybe that functionality needs to be done or checked manually, though? It's not cool to welcome vandalism-only accounts and thank them for their contributions. You're not the first bot to do that, but we don't want disruptive users thinking we're crazy, do we? It doesn't matter what the notification was about — I'm going to revert their edits, anyway — this was the talkpage you posted on. Bishonen | talk 09:35, 12 June 2013 (UTC).

Comment/question:
I think again - as I read now as well as I have read in the morning - that I made a right correction to gain pairness of brackets.
Revision as of 06:59, 12 June 2013:
1. the first sentence of the article, 2 times copied:
Qatar (i/ˈkɑːtɑr/ or i/kəˈtɑr/;[6][7] Arabic: قطر Qaṭar [ˈqɑtˤɑr]; local vernacular pronunciation: [ɡɪtˤɑr],[8] officially the State of Qatar (Arabic: دولة قطر Dawlat Qaṭar)), is a sovereign Arab state, located in Western Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeasterly coast of the much larger Arabian Peninsula.
2. detto but brackets manually indicated this way <--bracket 1 opens:--> ( ... ) <--:bracket 1 closed--> and so on:
Qatar <--bracket 1 opens:--> (i/ˈkɑːtɑr/ or i/kəˈtɑr/;[6][7] Arabic: قطر Qaṭar [ˈqɑtˤɑr]; local vernacular pronunciation: [ɡɪtˤɑr],[8] officially the State of Qatar <--bracket 2 opens:--> (Arabic: دولة قطر Dawlat Qaṭar)) <--:bracket 1 + 2 closed-->, is a sovereign Arab state, located in Western Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeasterly coast of the much larger Arabian Peninsula.
My idea: possibly the BracketBot is disturbed by the occurrence of arabian words ... best regards --Helium4 (talk) 11:41, 12 June 2013 (UTC)
- Well, I'm always disturbed. :)
- It's not the Arabic words that is causing the problem. There was an extra ) created when you added ")German: Katar,". You didn't need to add the ")". You also didn't need to add this edit at all. This is the English Wikipedia, not German. Only need to add German pronunciations to German articles. Bgwhite (talk) 22:32, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

Dear BracketBot,
Please don't blindly treat the < symbol as a bracket. It is more traditionally a mathematical symbol that means "less than", and it is still often used that way, even nowadays. Thanks. 50.0.136.106 (talk) 05:30, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Regarding the Abdul-Majid Rouzi page, the name of the Taliban commander in question is Abdul-Razzaq Akhundzada (former governor of Herat and foreign minister for the Taliban). You have a page entitled simply "Abdul Razzaq", where this Taliban commander is described as "Mullah Abdur Razzaq". To differentiate him from others--as Abdul-Razzaq is a common Muslim name--I propose you change the link in question to "Abdul Razzaq Akhundzada" which is more specific. There is yet another "Abdul Razzaq", also of the Taliban, who is reported to have been slain in 2003 by Western forces. This Abdul-Razzaq's full name is "Abdul Razzaq Nafees". A quick google search can verify this information.
- @24.150.192.217: - BracketBot notified you about an extra "}" in Abdul Majid Rouzi, which I fixed in this edit. As for the other comments, I suggest you post to Talk:Abdul-Majid Rouzi. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 00:19, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

- @Colonies Chris: - This was not a false positive - I fixed Bobsled roller coaster in this edit. I used AWB to locate the extra bracket by putting "{|}" in the Find field. AWB (and presumably BracketBot) will give an unbalanced bracket error when a table starts with "{" and ends with {{s-end}}, even though the table is displayed properly. Happy editing! Perhaps the User:talk notice by BracketBot can be improved to report current unmatched brackets dynamically.
As DPL bot reports disambiguation links. Compare my talk page (version 2013-06-16 11:53) sections 55 and 56.

- No. The option "Check to confirm" checks the current version of the page and and therefore reports no problem if the page currently includes no links to dab pages. --P64 (talk) 17:28, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
- @P64: It would be ideal I guess, but for lack of better wording to describe the problem, shoving what's wrong in the editor's face is the best way to put across the message. 930913(Congratulate) 02:51, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- No. The option "Check to confirm" checks the current version of the page and and therefore reports no problem if the page currently includes no links to dab pages. --P64 (talk) 17:28, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
- I am not professionally a programmer in any language and I do not know any python. As I understand the term, DPL reports disambiguation links dynamically; the report differs according to when it is viewed. Bracketbot reports unmatched brackets statically; it provides a fixed report that may be obsolete when viewed.
- It is good that Bracketbot's report covers unmatched brackets from the past, not only those added by the offending editor.
- Pass this on to the Bracketbot maintainer if applicable. --P64 (talk) 17:26, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

- That depends on the image. If the image has already been uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons or to Wikipedia itself, the picture tutorial explains how to add it to the article. In short, code like [[File:Example.jpg|thumb|Image caption]] will display a thumbnail of File:Example.jpg with a caption of "Image caption". If you want to upload the image, things get more tricky, especially regarding copyright. If the image has been released under a free license such as the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License you can upload it to the Commons via their Upload Wizard. If the image is not freely licensed, you'll have to check the non-free content criteria to determine whether it can be used; I don't expect non-free images would be acceptable for that article. Non-free images must be uploaded to Wikipedia itself; see WP:File Upload Wizard. Huon (talk) 03:48, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

- I have to disagree with that. There were misplaced parentheses, there are large amounts of what looks like machine-translated content that should be copyedited for gramar, the {{quote box}} templates didn't work alongside images (moving the quotes away from where they should have appeared), and links were broken because they referred to Spanish articles without an English equivalent, or because they referred to non-existing Spanish articles which did have an English equivalent under a different title. I fixed many of those issues, but not the most severe, the problematic translations. That would probably require someone who speaks both Spanish and English. Huon (talk) 03:48, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

- There are several advantages to creating (and using) an account as opposed to editing without logging in; see WP:Why create an account?. I'd say the most important is attributability: Your IP address might change; the account will be yours forever, and editing while logged in will attribute all your edits to that one account. That makes it easier for other editors to contact you if they want to thank you or discuss your edits.
- Also, some parts of Wikipedia's functionality are available only to registered users, or only to autoconfirmed users whose accounts are at least four days old and have made at least ten edits. Huon (talk) 03:48, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

I don't recall editing any of the existing text and an edit comparison of my revision and the previous revision fails to highlight any other edits. Feel free to fix the "[]" wherever I broke it. BTW, based on founder Herbert Blau's book on The Actor's Workshop, the entry should be "The Actor's Workshop" vs "Actor's Workshop." I don't even know what a "diff" nor can I log in to my user page because my PW reset attempts have failed -- frustrating and deflating :(.

- A "diff" is a display of the changes between two versions of an article; you can use the page history to look at diffs.
- You had a stray surplus bracket in the Stage Left entry; I fixed that. Regarding the name, the workshop itself and Glau indeed capitalize "The"; others, however, largely don't seem to do so. Furthermore, we have an article on an unrelated acting school at The Actors Workshop. Renaming the page thus may not be the best option; for now I've added hatnotes to both articles pointing to each other. Huon (talk) 10:38, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Comment/question:
My comment is why are the Jews allowed to make up lies about history and why are they allowed to laugh at the newly revised Balfour Declaration?? Even the Hebrew writing is laughing at the Balfour Declaration: Portrait of Balfour died, along with the famous declaration And in Hebrew to prove my point: תמות פורטרט של בלפור, לצד הכרזתו המפורסמת Why are these Zionist allowed Change how history is perceived, they are literally re-writing history as they go along. Why is this being allowed, how come they're not being jumped upon every time they make an edit, and who stole my id on Wikipedia, I've tried to log in but it won't allow me to. my id is B1N4RYGH0ST. Wikipedia claims that this name is taken, but I made this name back in 1989 on a really old computer that used plain basis before it became Visual Basic. Why is there no Email address associated with my ID? Please be ask fast as you were writing me back yesterday over some kind of nonsense. Oh and I took the liberty to take a snap shot of the page, so no sneaky little Zionist can alter what has been written. Give Palestine back to the Palestinians and kick the invaders out.
86.41.17.123 (talk) 16:03, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
- If I understand you correctly, you're unhappy with the Hebrew description of File:Balfour portrait and declaration.JPG. I don't quite understand the issue; it seems an almost-literal translation of the English description. The image shows Balfour, and it shows the declaration. So how is that incorrect, and how are people laughing at it?
- Regarding the username, you cannot have registered an account of that name in 1989 because Wikipedia did not exist back then. Wikipedia accounts are created on a first-come, first-served basis - apparently someone else used the same name as you do and registered it first. So that's probably not your ID, and the user who created the account never bothered to add an email address.
- On an entirely unrelated note, we're here to create an encyclopedia, not to engage in political advocacy. This is particularly true for controversial topics such as the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the community tends to take a very dim view of people who assume bad faith, are uncivil, engage in personal attacks or otherwise create drama or use Wikipedia as a soapbox instead of working towards the improvement of the encyclopedia. I never replaced Paul Harvey Jr. As Paul's sub I did the show whenever Paul was sick and filled in for Paul Jr. on the AM show when his dad was ill. I also did the memorial shows which lasted two or three weeks after Paul Sr. died. The oft-cited release that I was going to do a permanent show was wrong. This was announced by someone at Citadel but it was news to me and to my agent. I already had my show at KGO and my Real Estate show and had no need or desire to do a daily commentary, especially since making it newsworthy now that I lived in Sn Francisco would mean waking up at Midnight every night which I was glad to do once in awhile when I filled in for the Harveys but never considered doing as a regular thing. the release was put out by a Citadel official who apparently thought I would jump at the chance to do it, but I declined, especially since their offer was profit sharing of the spots. Since Citadel, though they were always perfectly nice to me, was near bankruptcy at that time, I didn't see the future of being a single creditor behind a bunch of banks and investment houses and figured I'd never actually see any money from this arrangement, and so, thanking them for the offer, said, thanks, but no thanks. It is the way of the internet that articles like the one cited never die, but it was wishful thinking on someone's part and not reality.
- All BracketBot pointed out was that when you removed part of the source you left other parts, leading to mismatched brackets. I've proposed the page for deletion because there's no indication that Paul Harvey, Jr. is independently notable. Huon (talk) 02:51, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Comment/question: I simply want to apologize for my unintended change in my last edit (Scientology page) It was simply a confusion regarding my attempts to understand the new editing system, I was sure I had left it the way it previously was, yet of course, I was mistaken. While I cannot guarantee such mistakes might not repeat, I can assure everyone, that whatever edits I might or may not make in the future, will all be done with the best of intentions.
And I prefer not making a personal account yet, because of reasons better kept personal, but I will certainly do so in the future.
Edit: As usual I intended to fix an obvious spelling error, which may, or may not have been reverted to its wrongful way, yet since I am yet to understand the new editing system, I will simply let it be in hopes that someone else fix them until I understand "the new editing system" and its functionality better.
Have a nice day.

Comment/question: I simply want to apologize for my unintended change in my last edit (Scientology page) It was simply a confusion regarding my attempts to understand the new editing system, I was sure I had left it the way it previously was, yet of course, I was mistaken. While I cannot guarantee such a mistake might not repeat itself, I can assure everyone, that whatever edits I might or may not make in the future, will all be done with the best of intentions.
And I prefer not making a personal account yet, because of reasons better kept personal I will share certain details here for those interested: Lets just say, that I did some well intended yet controversial edits (without knowing it would stir up such controversy) once, and my well intended edits led to a so called "flame war" and while I refused tot take part of it myself, the consequences of my actions spun out of control, and I was blamed for "starting a fight" and "punished" several times for the same "mistake", in other words, that first one moderator reprimanded me and locked my account for thirty days, and when the lock was lifted, yet another moderator, put in my own words "overly eager to find wrongdoers" locked my account for a additional 30 days for the very same mistake I had previously done.
Since my pleas for Wikipedia moderators to understand that I had been "punished" several times for one "crime" was a wrongful thing to do, and that I had not intended any harm to begin with remained unheard, I thought to myself (excuse the language) "What the hell will stop these from locking me up forever for the same mistake whenever they feel like it?"
Thus making a account, seems largely meaningless, until I at least know my pleas, have been listened so mistakes such as what the moderators made, are not repeated, at least not towards me.
Additional info: It was a minor change about some Star Wars lore, and I am certain that the moderators themselves where biased, but I never claimed that until right now, and as long as such mistakes repeat, I refuse to fund Wikipedia further, for this, I lament this of course.
Have a nice day.

Comment/question: I got two messages about two bracket errors each in two of my recent edits. Although the first notice did catch a mislaid close-bracket, it also claimed I added an open angle-bracket, which I did not. The second notice mistakenly treated a shifting of a matched pair of open parentheses as a misplaced open parenthesis, somehow failing to detect the close parenthesis that immediately followed the quoted "erroneous" passage. It also claimed a misplaced open angle-bracket which I did not add.
I tracked down where the spurious angle brackets came from. In Galaxy Quest, it was included when the reference it was in was added back in May 2012. The problem with Moya Brennan was included in its very first version back in December 2009.
Please review these notices and the syntax "errors" wrongly claimed or attributed, so that you can update your bot. (We definitely need bots like this, so I'd rather it be fixed than to opt myself out.) Thank you for your assistance.
Jeff Q (talk) 04:20, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- In both cases you contributed an unpaired bracket of your own (I fixed the second article), and the bot explicitly says what you modified (by modifying 1 "[]"s). However, while it's doing so, the bot lists all unpaired brackets remaining on the page - firstly, it's not all that good at determining where exactly something is mismatched, and secondly, while you're repairing mismatched brackets, why only fix your own? If you can restore the brackets that I removed in my edit for me I would appreciate it. I am very low tech on these issues. Also, I would like to place an old Billboard Ad as the picture in the basic info box, and or insert it into the article somehow. I assume the ads are public domain as they were published 61 years ago. I don't get online much, but I will be checking for your responses and info. Thanks, MMc..............

- The content I removed was unduly promotional and did not cite any independent sources such as news articles reporting on those rewards. There are lots of things that are very real but not relevant enough to be mentioned in a Wikipedia article. You should also take a look at our guideline on conflicts of interest.
