Simplenote

You deleted Simplenote in January 2009 after a prod ended. I have managed to create a notable stub. I was wondering if you could put a copy of the deleted article on User:Joe Chill/Sandbox so that I can see what else I have to work with. Joe Chill (talk) 23:08, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

No problem, Joe Chill. I've done this for you. Kind regards, Malcolmxl5 (talk) 21:06, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

The article Ogugu has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No use to the encyclopedia in it's current state and unlikely to be improved upon in the future

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. A minor quibble

Hi,
There's not much point in unlinking something in a See-Also section, leaving just a bulletpointed snippet of plain text. It may be better to delete it altogether. No?

Screencast for new NPP tool design?

Hello. This is Ian Baker. I'm a developer over at the Wikimedia Foundation.

tl;dr: We’re designing a much-improved UI for NPP tools, and we’re seeking guidance—and hopefully, screencasts of your NPP workflow—from expert New Page Patrollers like yourself. We’re asking for this so we can see (literally) what actions you take during patrolling which could be better supported through software.

I'm contacting you because, according to our statistics, you're a particularly active New Page Patroller on the English Wikipedia. Here at the WMF, we're working on a design for a much-improved NPP user interface. We hope that it will (as part of a larger strategy) address many outstanding issues in the article creation process, while also providing a more modern, streamlined and efficient UX for patrollers.

To do this successfully, we are relying upon the guidance of our most experienced patrollers. I'm sending this message to the ten most prolific patrollers in 2011, and a few other people who've been participating actively in this discussion.

Specifically, I'm hoping you can take a few minutes to record a screencast of yourself doing NPP. We're looking for a 10-15 minute session, but more is okay if you feel it's needed. Ideally, you'd first walk us through your process, explaining as you go, and then switch to doing NPP at your usual pace.

Our preliminary examination of this feature has shown that many experienced patrollers have evolved their own specially-tailored interface and workflow, often using external tools and plugins. Making an interface that works well will require understanding those tools and the motivation for using them. However, even if you haven't done that, observing your NPP technique will still be valuable, giving us insights into what factors inform your judgement, how you use the existing interface, and how long NPP generally takes an expert patroller such as yourself.

If you'd like to help, great! I've posted a set of instructions over at the relevant thread on the Article Creation Workflow talk page, which should get you everything you need to know. If something's missing or you have a question, post it there. That's also the place to go if you want to learn more about the reasoning behind this request.

I understand that people have differing expectations of privacy with regard to their own computer and voice. Therefore, you can either post this screencast publicly (place a link in the talk page above) or if you'd prefer, send it to me privately at ian@wikimedia.org.

Of course, any other input on this feature that you’d like to provide is also welcome. Don't hesitate to get involved in the discussion on the above-linked talk page, or contact me personally. I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks! raindrift (talk) 00:20, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello, I am assuming that you will want to replace all of these links that you prematurely deleted. GaryColemanFan (talk) 03:58, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Jay Gottlieb

Hi, I went to WP:The Musical at Lincoln Center had a discussion with the Wikipedians there about the criteria for notability of a performing artist. They said, the most obvious way to establish notability is with multiple reviews and mentions in a major newspaper, like the New York Times, or other well-known sources.

Then I went to a concert at the New School for Social Research, and sure enough, the pianist Jay Gottlieb wasn't in WP even though he had lots of reviews and mentions in the NYT, among other things.

I started to create a new page, then I saw

02:09, 24 September 2011 Malcolmxl5 (talk | contribs) deleted "Jay gottlieb" ‎ (G8: redirect to a deleted or nonexistent page (TW))

and a message to contact the deleting administrator first before creating a new page.

I couldn't find anything about it on your "My contributions" page or anywhere else.

Did you delete the a page for Jay Gottlieb, the musician? If so, where can I find the reasons documented? Is there any reason why Jay Gottlieb, the musician is not WP:NOTABLE, despite his multiple reviews in the NYT? --Nbauman (talk) 22:09, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Malcolmxl5,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 04:00, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

New Page Patrolling

Hi Malcolm,

I was patrolling the new pages and I noticed that many of the pages had already been patrolled by you, but you forgot to mark them as patrolled. If you could go back through your history and do that that would be great! I have already done two of them for you that I came across.

Hi. In your recent article edits, you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Greatest Hits (Lorrie Morgan album)

I am not seeing any evidence that Lorrie had an album named Reflections. My76Strat moved the page and put an Allmusic link in the edit summary, but following the link does not show the word Reflections anywhere. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 03:24, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

ETA: Never mind. I clearly couldn't see "reflections" written in ultra tiny letters on the album art. Also, I had it confused with To Get to You. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 03:29, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Controversies at the 2012 Summer Olympics

What is this? You mentioned nothing in talk and moved in within 10 minuted of the discussion. Furthermore, you cite "past years" when OSE is explicitly not an arguement in discussionLihaas (talk) 00:38, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Lihaas. The move was requested by User:Ravendrop who used a {{Db-move}} with that rationale. He did the bold part of WP:BRD, you've reverted and if Ravendrop still feel the page should be moved, he should start discussing this to reach a consensus as to the title. Kind regards, Malcolmxl5 (talk) 01:03, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Instantatlas (talk) 07:21, 11 August 2012 (UTC) InstantAtlas Hello Malcomxl5 just to apologise about leaving the page 'community information systems' blank. We do not understand why someone would do this, especially as the redirect is not correct. Hopefully its now resolved. Many thanks, InstantAtlas

Mini cockup

Can you help me sort out all the controversial moves that just took place around the Mini? We need the articles back as they were so that a proper discussion can take place and consensus reached if names are to change. --Biker Biker (talk) 21:33, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

It is a mess. Someone 'boldly' moved the pages by moving one and cut & pasting the other; I had to merge histories. They can go back to where they were - the 'revert' of 'bold', 'revert', 'discuss'. What do you need help with? The same thing happen with the Fiat 500 article. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 21:48, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
I would like Mini (1959-2000) moving back to Mini (I already placed the appropriate db tag on the latter). I think the other bits can easily be sorted as Mini Hatch is back where it belongs (for now). And I guess the same needs to be done on the various Fiat 500 articles although I care less about those. A gentle slap for the offender (or at least guidance on how not to cock up again would also be useful). --Biker Biker (talk) 21:51, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
Same thing here but for the Fiat 500 article. Please see this also diff. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 21:53, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
To sort out Fiat 500, Fiat 500 needs to be moved back to Fiat 500 (2007), then Fiat 500 (1957-1977) needs to be moved back to Fiat 500. Then proper discussion can take place. I can't do the moves, it needs an admin to delete the redirects first. --Biker Biker (talk) 21:55, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
I agree. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 21:56, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
  • OK, Mini is back where it was. I had started cleaning up the incoming links after the last move but what I've done won't be too much of a problem as there's a redirect in place. I'll have a look at Fiat 500 now. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 21:59, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, much appreciated. --Biker Biker (talk) 22:02, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
I think we're sorted. Would you guys like to kick off the discussions? Malcolmxl5 (talk) 22:10, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the great work. As far as initiating RMs I don't think there was ever an issue with the old title of Fiat 500. I can't speak for the Mini though. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 22:13, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
I think I saw a comment that the talk pages of the Fiat 500 articles were with the wrong articles. Do they need to be swopped over? Malcolmxl5 (talk) 22:41, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
No, you fixed it. Thanks again. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 23:15, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Not quite done yet, I'm afraid. Did you notice that your Twinkle nuked a bunch of redirects when you temp-deleted Mini? Prolog (talk) 23:01, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Request for help in identifying a Jensen

thunb

Dear Malcolm

Not worth losing sleep, but just sometimes my impossible mysteries are obvious "no brainers" for you. So ... in case you know the answer, and please, here's a note I put on the Jensen page yesterday:

Does anyone know what this is, please? It has Jensen badges, albeit ones that are rather hard to read. Thank you in hopeful anticipation and best wishes Charles01 (talk) 09:36, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

PS I've just realised my fingers were leaping ahead of my brain. You are not the Malcolm to whom I had intended to send this note. I do not expect you to know the answer to my question and I apologize for troubling you with it. Though of course if you did know.... Regards Charles01 (talk) 07:23, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Looks like a very early Jensen. :) Have a look at this[2] Malcolmxl5 (talk) 08:37, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
As in 1951, per the date given for that Autocare road test. I think you're right. I'll google around a bit more before being 100% convinced, but meantime you've taken me to about 98% and thank you much. Regards Charles01 (talk)

Hey! How did you know that was created by a banned user? I've seen these types of things a lot of times and I feel like I'm missing a trick. Please teach me your ways. PanydThe muffin is not subtle 12:01, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Panyd, this was a classic duck test, an editor exhibiting the same behaviours as the blocked editor and his socks. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 17:57, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Ok, so, following this, the user who was defending the article last time was using sockpuppets, but the sockpuppet investigation didn't mention the last user to be accused and... ugghh. I think I'm going to have to bang my head against a wall. I guess my biggest question is why the hell would someone sock about bus routes in York? Sigh. Thank you anyway. I think this is just going to have to be increased sleuthing on my part. Yay suspicion! PanydThe muffin is not subtle 02:04, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for participating in my RfA. I appreciate that you took the time to comment on my candidacy and I hope I can retain your trust in the months (and probably years) to come.

By the way, sorry if the second paragraph of my original comment confused you (assuming you had noticed before I changed it). I had meant that for Kablammo. It's just that his comment was so close to yours.

Anyways, take care. =) Kurtis (talk) 16:24, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Es shell deletion

I just got this undeleted by talking to the person who originally deleted it, and hours later you deleted it again. Please look at the logs, my talk page, and LFaraone's talk page :-)

Wryun (talk) 23:18, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello Wryun. It was nominated for speedy deletion by User:Msnicki who said: "AfD outcome was delete. Admin apparently forgot to do the deletion." I checked the history and saw no edits since the AfD and assumed the same thing. Would you like me to move it into your userspace so you can work on it without this misunderstanding happening again? You can then move it back into the article space when you are ready. Kind regards, Malcolmxl5 (talk) 23:25, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Hi Malcolmx, I didn't have time to do the requested edits (I was asleep; the page was only online for a couple of hours!)! Please have a look at the bottom of LFaraone's talk page; maybe I'm doing this the wrong way, since I'm not experienced with wikipedia :-) If the sandbox is the only way to go, then that would be appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wryun (talkcontribs) 23:28, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
It's just a misunderstanding that's all. I've restored it now I have the full picture. :) Malcolmxl5 (talk) 23:33, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Oh, you just edit it out. I've moved the page to User:Wryun/Es shell, where you can work on it in peace. Happy editing! Malcolmxl5 (talk) 23:39, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Henry Flagg French

Why would anyone who is looking for a bio on Henry Flagg French be "redirected" to his son, Daniel Chester French. I was in the middle of creating a page for Henry Flagg French when you reinstated the redirect. Again, I ask, why would anyone who is looking for information on Henry Flagg French who is a man large in history in his own right want to be redirected to his son's page. I would like to remove the "redirect" so that I can continue creating a page for Henry Flagg French. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mejkravitz (talkcontribs) 22:02, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mejkravitz. Henry Flagg French is mentioned in the Daniel Chester French article but that is not the issue here. The community prefers not to have blank pages on Wikipedia because they confuse the reader. It also has a process for dealing with problematic redirects.
If there is a problem with a redirect, then it is preferred to leave it as it is and list it for discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion (RfD), which is the place where the Wikipedia community decides what should be done with problematic redirects. You can put forward a case for removing it there.
If all you want to do is replace a currently existing redirect with an actual article, all you need to do is just overwrite the redirect.
Kind regards, Malcolmxl5 (talk) 17:47, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for further explanation. It is my understanding that a "redirct" is meant to take the "searcher" to the correct page. Such as "Daniel French" would redirect to "Daniel Chester French". But if I am searching for information on "Henry Flagg French" the redirect to "Daniel Chester French" prohibits me from finding any other page that mentions Henry Flagg French. He is mentioned in the article about the "French Drain" as he invented that drainage system. But when I type in Henry Flagg French into the search box I am immediately sent to Daniel Chester French's article to discover that he is Daniel's father. In this particular case the "redirect" of Henry Flagg French to Daniel Chester French is incorrect and restrictive.

I was in the middle of writing an article on Henry Flagg French on the redirect page when you reverted it back and I lost all my information. So frustrating. But okay that should be the worst thing that happens in my life.

I reiterate that the redirct in this case is restrictive and not in accordance with why redircts exist.

So what can we do about it?

Mejkravitz — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mejkravitz (talkcontribs) 11:57, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mejkravitz. If you want to expand it into an article, I would just go ahead and replace it with text. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 12:22, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

"Shorehan (LIRR station)"

You recently deleted the article Shorehan (LIRR station). I believe what the person who created this article was trying to make was actually for Shoreham (LIRR station). There's almost no discussion of the two companies whose articles are also nominated there, most the comments are "redirect" (not "redirect all") without comment, and I think it's unlikely that separate discussions would have produced the same result - it isn't similar to any of the examples at WP:BUNDLE. Would it be appropriate to restore these articles and relist separately? Peter James (talk) 22:53, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, I was just trying to remember how I was involved with this! It rang a bell and I see now I 'tidied up' after the closure by redirecting the two articles about the companies. Looking at the discussion again, I'm inclined to think that consensus is not clear whether 'redirect' is for just March 2008 Manhattan construction crane collapse or for all the listed articles since nobody, including the closer, made reference to all of them (indeed the closer did not carry out the redirecting of the articles of the two companies so he must have must missed that). I've no objections to those articles being relisted separately; I'll revert myself and you can go ahead with a listing. --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 23:15, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I've nominated them separately and notified the participants from the first discussion. Peter James (talk) 00:18, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Yann Martel

Just an FYI...Glad someone saw fit to finally block 207.166.19.33. I just saw the above page for the first time today. Looking though it, it seemed that the last good version was all the way back in early August, so I restored it to there. Gtwfan52 (talk) 20:17, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for doing that. I noticed the blanking and reverted but didn't realised at first that there was more vandalism than that. I'm just going through the edits to clear out any BLP violations. One to watch I think. 207.166.19.33 may need a longer block too if this continues. --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 20:25, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
Have to say I must not be the only one who has never heard of Martel if a page can be vandalized frequently for a month and a half and no one catches it. On my list now. Gtwfan52 (talk) 20:35, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
It's surprising, isn't it. I've been through the edits and hidden those with a BLP violation in them. The rest, I think, is just vandalism. Thanks for watching out for it. --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 20:51, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

amblenorthumberland

You asked user:United2013 what their interest was in the amblenorthumberland site. They run it. They previously posted under the name user:amblenorthumberland. When user:amblenorthumberland was blocked, user:united2013 was created. There was a period of time after that when they posted just as the IP address user:86.184.222.22. When the IP address user:86.184.222.22 was blocked, user:united2013 took over again. The sum of their contribution to Wikipedia has been trying to get their website on the Amble page.

There have been arguments on the talk page, because when various editors decided to remove their link (which I did twice), they argued that The Ambler, the community newspaper, doesn't belong on the page either. This has spawned an argument and edit warring.

I write this here because they have accused me of being a 'trouble maker', said that my sole contribution to the article was to remove their link any time it was posted, and threatened me with legal action for saying they were lying when they said The Ambler was a business when it's actually a charity.--Jcvamp (talk) 09:49, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Stop creating trouble again Jcvamp - YOU have been one of the worst offenders of edit warring and creating arguments on here! I never said anything about your sole contribution being removing the link. I stand by my definition that the Ambler is a business (albeit a social enterprise) as it has an income and revenue stream. YOU are heavily involved with the Ambler so you're not quite the disinterested party you claim to be. The amblenorthumberland website is a legitimate source of important information about Amble - just as much as the Ambler is and has every right to be in the external links at least. Please end this witch-hunt against us NOW! United2013 (talk) 15:34, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Malcolmxl5, I'm sorry this petty argument has been brought onto your talk page. I was trying to let you know about the situation. My apologies again.--Jcvamp (talk) 16:44, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry about this too - Jcvamp had absolutely no need to drag you into it United2013 (talk) 20:08, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

I thought the issue had been resolved. I posted here to answer the question you'd asked on United2013's page. I didn't mean to reopen earlier arguments in doing so. If further arguments occur, suitable action could be considered (eg. removing both entries).--Jcvamp (talk) 23:03, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

AfD for Ruben Villareal

I'm just like to ask how you came to your conclusion to close the AfD for Ruben Villareal as delete? I added a number of sources that I thought would make his pass WP:GNG despite being one fight short of passing WP:NMMA. Simply curious as to why you made that decision. Take care. Luchuslu (talk) 21:29, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Yes, that's fine. My reading of the discussion went something like this:
I placed little weight on the 'Delete Per nom' argument from IronKnuckle and the 'Keep As per Luchuslu' argument from Sepulwiki, which are arguments to avoid in deletion discussion, and I disregarded the sockpuppetry.
It seemed to me that there was wide agreement that the subject did not meet WP:NMMA. However, you added sources and argued that he passed WP:GNG so I focused on this and the responses to it. It seemed to me though that you were unable to persuade other editors of that. Mdtemp did not agree or change his !vote after your and his discussion of the sources, arguing that the coverage was routine, Mkdw argued that coverage was run of the mill, and CaSJer argued that the coverage was too routine to reach GNG.
My sense of the discussion then was that, although not everybody agreed, there was a rough consensus that the subject did not meet GNG, nor did he meet NMMA. So the outcome was delete.
Of course having said all that, should significant new information come along such as better sources or he meets NMMA some time in the future, this can be presented at WP:DRV with a request to recreate the page.
--Malcolmxl5 (talk) 23:30, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I can understand that. Thank you for the explanation. Luchuslu (talk) 20:28, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Happy to oblige. :) --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 23:54, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

The title "Kwanju Massacre" does not match the main text body, which begins with "The Gwangju Democratization Uprising." Also, the official name for this event is 광주 민주화 운동, which directly translates to Kwangju Democratization Movement. The title Kwangju Massacre does not reflect the nature of this event and does not reflec the original name.

Also, may I request the search result that you used to supported the argument? Some have argued that a "massacre" occurred during "Kwangju Democratization Movement." I am afraid that your search result may have collected result of two different words. 174.141.139.181 (talk) 06:55, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

With my search result, Gwangju Massacre is far less common than Gwangju Democratization Movement. result 1

result 2

I would like to know if we can talk about another move of this document to Gwangju Democratization Movement. 174.141.139.181 (talk) 07:00, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello. My role in that discussion was to impartially assess what the rough consensus was and, as you can see, all those who took part in that short discussion were in agreement with the proposal so the outcome was to move the page. You may wish to discuss the google search quoted there with User:Phoenix7777 who made the proposal to move.
If you have significant new information that shows that that the common name is as you say, then you can start a second move request; details of how to do this can be found at Wikipedia:RM#Requesting_a_single_page_move. You may wish to review Wikipedia's article titling policy, particularly the section on common names. Note that it is preferred to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources; see WP:sources for what constitute a reliable source.

Why are you simply removing deleted country-specific Jetix page links?

They should simply be changed to point to Jetix instead! Dogmaticeclectic (talk) 21:32, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

I've been working my way through a large number of broken redirects and cleaning up after this Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jetix (US). A problem with this is that simply removing them - even if the removals are only temporary - makes it less likely that other editors will update them properly if, say, you miss any in this next step. Also, the removals cause inconvenience - again, even if they are only temporary. Dogmaticeclectic (talk) 21:57, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
