Administrators' newsletter – August 2023
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2023).
Interface administrator changes
- The tag filter on Special:NewPages and revision history pages can now be inverted. This allows hiding edits made by automated tools. (T334338)
- Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool that allows easier blocking of plain domains (and their subdomains). This is more easily searchable and is faster for the software to use than the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. It does not support regex (for complex cases), URL path-matching, or the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. (T337431)
- The arbitration cases named Scottywong and AlisonW closed 10 July and 16 July respectively.
- The SmallCat dispute arbitration case is in the workshop phase.
Thanks
[edit]Thank you for helping fight vandalism and for beating me to it. Shadow345110 (talk) has given you a cookie! Cookies promote WikiLove and hopefully this one has made your day better. You can spread the WikiLove by giving someone else a cookie, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend. 18:43, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
To spread the goodness of cookies, you can add {{subst:Cookie}} to someone's talk page with a friendly message, or eat this cookie on the giver's talk page with {{subst:munch}}!
- Thank you so much! I've been seeing lots of instances where you've gotten there before I did. Joyous! Noise! 18:47, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
"the paragraph just before the Table of Contents"
[edit]FYI, for anyone using Vector 2022, there's no longer any one paragraph that's distinctly "before the Table of Contents", which was migrated to the left of the page. Since I'm familiar with other skins I know to translate that to "the end of the lede section", but it might not be clear to a newer user. Although, the "newer user" you said this to has now been indeffed and, I suspect, was not that new. Oh well. Thanks for your efforts with them regardless, and happy editing. :)

- Thank you! It's so easy to forget that everyone isn't using the same skin. Joyous! Noise! 21:39, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
Could you (or any tps) take a look at their user page please, it is copied from Callanecc, I've left Callanecc a message. I've reverted Mr.Green E5t edits as they have broken formatting. I've not warned them as yet as I'm not sure if this is an LTA thing or...something. Thanks Knitsey (talk) 14:07, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
- Aw Knitsey, it looks like you hit "enter" here just as I was snapping my laptop shut to go bottle-feed some orphaned squirrels. Someone took care of the userpage, I see. I'm not sure what's going on with the edits regarding the flags. I'll keep an eye out, and of course feel free to let me (or another admin) know if things go pear-shaped. Joyous! Noise! 20:17, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
- Someone has sorted out the cloned user page and left a message.
- Enough about that...orphaned squirrels are much more interesting. Knitsey (talk) 20:22, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
- They are pretty high on the scale of "cute things." The smallest one got away from me a bit, scampered up my shoulder and around to the back of my neck, and wrapped himself in my hair like a cloak. He fell asleep within the span of about 5 seconds. I almost required assistance to get him out: his passive resistance skills are strong. Joyous! Noise! 23:13, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

- Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
- A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that
[s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment
.
- Special:Contributions now shows the user's local edit count and the account's creation date. (T324166)
- The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming
local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus
. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged tonote when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful
.
- Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Speedy deletion nomination of User talk:Adityakumerofficials
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on User talk:Adityakumerofficials, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Cahk (talk) 08:02, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, your help at Matthew Broderick is much appreciated. However, I noticed that the semi-protection you put in is significantly shorter than the previous semi-protection which expired only a short time ago. The page has long been a vandalism target. - An RfC is open regarding amending the paid-contribution disclosure policy to add the following text:
Any administrator soliciting clients for paid Wikipedia-related consulting or advising services not covered by other paid-contribution rules must disclose all clients on their userpage.
- Administrators can now choose to add the user's user page to their watchlist when changing the usergroups for a user. This works both via Special:UserRights and via the API. (T272294)
- The 2023 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process has concluded with the appointment of one new CheckUser.

- Hello, DueKinkajou4384! Rollback rights are rarely extended to editors with fewer than 200 edits. I believe you're at about 168 right now. I see that you HAVE been working to remove some vandalism from Wikipedia, so thank you for that. I'm a little concerned about this edit [1], in which you've extended a warm welcome to someone whose edits are 100% vandalism. My advice is to get a little more acquainted with Wikipedia, then apply for rollback rights at this page. Joyous! Noise! 21:37, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

- The WMF is working on making it possible for administrators to edit MediaWiki configuration directly. This is similar to previous work on Special:EditGrowthConfig. A technical RfC is running until November 08, where you can provide feedback.
- There is a proposed plan for re-enabling the Graph Extension. Feedback on this proposal is requested.

- Xaosflux, RoySmith and Cyberpower678 have been appointed to the Electoral Commission for the 2023 Arbitration Committee Elections. BusterD is the reserve commissioner.
- Following a motion, the contentious topic designation of Prem Rawat has been struck. Actions previously taken using this contentious topic designation are still in force.
- Following several motions, multiple topic areas are no longer designated as a contentious topic. These contentious topic designations were from the Editor conduct in e-cigs articles, Liancourt Rocks, Longevity, Medicine, September 11 conspiracy theories, and Shakespeare authorship question cases.
- Following a motion, remedies 3.1 (All related articles under 1RR whenever the dispute over naming is concerned), 6 (Stalemate resolution) and 30 (Administrative supervision) of the Macedonia 2 case have been rescinded.
- Following a motion, remedy 6 (One-revert rule) of the The Troubles case has been amended.
- An arbitration case named Industrial agriculture has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case close 8 November.
- The Articles for Creation backlog drive is happening in November 2023, with 700+ drafts pending reviews for in the last 4 months or so. - You know, I really have no idea what I did to earn that honor. I'm not entirely sure it was meant to convey a positive emotion: I seem to remember having a little dust-up with that editor. ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message
[edit]Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}

Administrators' newsletter – December 2023
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2023).
- Following a talk page discussion, the Administrators' accountability policy has been updated to note that while it is considered best practice for administrators to have notifications (pings) enabled, this is not mandatory. Administrators who do not use notifications are now strongly encouraged to indicate this on their user page.
- Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
- The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
- Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.

Incorrect reversions/warnings?
[edit]Hello Joyous, I noticed that you left a content dispute warning on User talk:Shannoncate after me and AntiDionysius warned them for vandalism. I wanted to ask you, were we reverting incorrectly? I was unfamiliar with the Keanu-Keona content dispute when reverting, so I apologize if it was incorrect to revert/warn for vandalism. ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 03:38, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hey there, no apology necessary! I noticed that there had been Keanu-Keona discussions on the talk page of the article, so I thought that a 3RR warning might slow her down, since she probably isn't seeing her edits as vandalism. There does seem to be genuine confusion about the correct spelling of that name. Joyous! Noise! 03:43, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Having one specific editor revert lots of my edits
[edit]Hi there! I have an editor Potatín5 (who looks to have almost been banned from the platform a year ago according to his talk page) systematically going back and reverting my research-based edits. What can I do about this? IncandescentBliss (talk) 00:43, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi! Are you still having this difficulty? (I let your message completely slip my mind: I'm so sorry for the delay in response.) Joyous! Noise! 03:44, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
- No worries! Yes, definitely. He seems pretty determined to not let broadly European scholarship onto the ledes of any Bible pages. He even deletes my compromises. I’ve had a little success when I just “bulldoze” with citations lol, but that takes a Herculean effort. In most of the talk pages it’s only been him and I. It’s getting very taxing. I’ve tried to move to less controversial editing opportunities.
- I’d love to see more editors of all backgrounds and varieties active on the Hebrew Bible pages! But it seems it’s mostly just the two of us who are active.
- Any thoughts on how to move forward? IncandescentBliss (talk) 05:09, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
- IncandescentBliss, as I already let you know, talk page messages like this and the ones below are standard warnings, and have nothing to with almost being banned (see Wikipedia:WikiProject User warnings and Wikipedia:Contentious topics, and compare with Wikipedia:Banning policy). I understand that this is all a bit obscure and confusing, but trust me that it's completely normal for new users (and at times for experienced users) to get a warning template once in a while: there are so many rules on here, and it's very easy to inadvertently break them. Hence the warnings.
- As far as I can see, Potatín5 is a user in good standing at this time. They have a clean block log. You already reported them to ANI, where it has been explained to you that merely disagreeing is not a cause to call for sanctions. You must now stop casting aspersions about this user.
- Also please trust me when I say that other users are active on Hebrew Bible pages, some of whom are much more active than Potatín5, as well as much more experienced. But you may, probably will, also disagree with them. Actually, I am 100% sure that you will find some of them much, much harder to deal with than Potatín5. The way to move forward is to either discuss on article talk pages and form a wp:consensus in each case, or (as I advised you to do before) to let it slide and simply accept (partial) reversions of (some of) your edits. ☿ Apaugasma (talk ☉) 20:51, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your help! We’ve made some progress and formed a consensus on the Solomon page. I appreciate your graciousness. IncandescentBliss (talk) 21:01, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Just popping by, via your 'thanks' for my edit, to say how much I like the "...Just make it better" sentiment of your user/talkpage banners. Would it be worth adding a link to the perfect is the enemy of good article? DMacks (talk) 22:00, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
Which template did you use for this reply?
[edit]@Joyous!: Hi! What template did you use for this comment on someone's talk page? I like the response and would like to use that when I undo similar unconstructive comments. - Dyork (talk) 16:23, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, Dyork! I used {{uw-vandalism1}}. You can change the "1" to a 2, 3, or 4 to run up the "not as nice" scale. Do you use Twinkle? It has a dropdown menu with a ton of templates you can pick from. Joyous! Noise! 16:28, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

20 years?! -- wow!
[edit]Hi, I'm a lowly talk page lurker who arrived here after you beat me to undoing a vandal edit :P But... 20 years as an admin is seriously impressive and I'm inspired by your dedication to the project. Probably the longest I've seen for currently-active users. I was still in elementary school in 2004. How do you think Wikipedia has evolved in the last 20 years--both for better and perhaps for worse?
Thank you for sticking around all this time. Again, I really admire your contributions. — That Coptic Guyping me! (talk) (contribs) 02:23, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Unexplained revert
[edit]Please explain your revert here, which I believe is not appropriate. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ryan_Sherriff&diff=next&oldid=1208775077 Especially when using tools, it is imperative that you not make inappropriate reverts. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:5837:9D9C:6FE8:2843 (talk) 22:03, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- You are correct: that shouldn't have been reverted. I apologize for being too quick on the trigger. Joyous! Noise! 22:08, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. Kindly self-revert.--2603:7000:2101:AA00:5837:9D9C:6FE8:2843 (talk) 22:11, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
