William Kent House

[edit]

Evil One's library

We have no article on this Grade II building which was added to the Rits. We hope (talk) 16:27, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

SusunW interested in starting it?♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:13, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Sure, just lemme finish this piece I am doing on the amazing woman, Magdalena Spínola. Couple of hours at most. SusunW (talk) 17:18, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
From the description, it looks like this is Wimbourne House re-named as William Kent House. We hope (talk) 17:43, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
It could still use considerable improvement!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:53, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
The Private Palaces of London Past and Present at Internet Archive. Page 365 starts a description of Wimbourne House. The book is in the PD in the US. We hope (talk) 18:59, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
Okay, I've finished my Guatemalan lady and am starting to look at this. I think you are totally right @We hope:, William Kent House and Wimbourne look to be one and the same. SusunW (talk) 19:07, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

This is what I was reading when I made the connection. We hope (talk) 19:10, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

File:Ball Room at Wimbourne House circa 1908.jpg dropping off a photo link for Wimbourne House. We hope (talk) 20:02, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
Cool. I'm working on it. Apparently every peer who lived there renamed it. It has been Beaufort House, Hamilton House, etc. I am trying to put a note on each owner's page. I had clipped the dining room too, but not uploaded it yet, so cool :) SusunW (talk) 20:14, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
@We hope: and @Dr. Blofeld: I'm still working on it, but ... Does it need to go on the talk page to rename it? I think whoever created the original page spelled it wrong. Each one of these peers changed the name of the house after their title. The last owner's title here and here both spell it Wimborne. Since there is precedent for it being named after the architect and we have a source stating it was called William Kent House, I think the page should be renamed to that. The current version is a mispelling, the architect's name never changed even if what the owners called it did. SusunW (talk) 21:12, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Oh right, can we all play "get Blofeld to write your article about a neglected but notable bit of architecture"? Well, Did you know that Luxford House near Crowborough was once owned by Tony Stratton Smith and where Van der Graaf Generator rehearsed Pawn Hearts (don't ask). Only trouble is, the best source I can find is the Daily Mail. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:46, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Write an article? I didn't know that was what wikipedia was about! Could have fooled me! We iz all serious senators on 'ere me lad.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:57, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
@Ritchie333: Go ahead and add 10 missing country houses from the List of country houses in the United Kingdom list from East Sussex including that to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki page at Round 8? Can you find five more missing country houses for East Sussex?♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:59, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Done another one - are we logging these anywhere or just noting the disappearance of redlinks? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:54, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

See Round 8, WP:Intertranswiki.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:01, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Ah right, yes. I've added two but a spin through the Grade I listed building records reveals most of these have already got articles, as you might expect. There may be some parish churches we can add, quite a few are Grade I listed. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:10, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Okay, I've got your ten. Does it matter that I created two of them this morning? Wings Place certainly looks doable. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:48, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Crinoline for GA? Good enough?

[edit]

Hi Blofeld! I've been doing quite a LOT of work on the Crinoline article recently. I was wondering if you think it good enough to take for GA assessment or if there is still work needing doing on it? Thanks so much. Mabalu (talk) 17:54, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Easily by the looks of it. In fact I sniff future FA potential. Make sure the lede adequately summarises the article though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:24, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Re your request for more monasteries, do they have to be Belgian? Eustachiusz (talk) 12:26, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Nope, whatever!! Whereever you want, I thought it was Belgium you were particularly interested in though, not monasteries in general!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:31, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

The other way round - more interested in monasteries than Belgium. I'll do a mixture of European ones but mostly Belgian and Dutch for this round: I know Belgium is supposedly under-represented, but in monastery terms the coverage of the Netherlands is actually much thinner. Eustachiusz (talk) 12:35, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

@Eustachiusz: Pick ten Dutch monasteries then!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:27, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi – yep, I'll find my Pevsner and go through it. Do you want me to identify ones missing from List of country houses in the United Kingdom#East Sussex; and if so, shall I add them to there and to the WikiProject page? @Hassocks5489: Yes, if you could add them to the main List of country houses in the United Kingdom#East Sussex list for now, we can always do more from it once the 10 are done, that list should be as comprehensive as possible.♦ Dr. Blofeld 05:20, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Mosque

[edit]

A few years ago, you created this article on Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque (Dubai). Just recently, I created the article on Iranian Mosque, Bur Dubai which has a similar alternative name in Arabic. Would you be able to confirm that both articles are indeed on the same mosque (which warrants a merge in that case)? Mar4d (talk) 04:54, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

No idea @Mar4d:, in fact I can't remember starting it, by all means merge if you think they're the same, but make sure you state the different names it is known as in title section.♦ Dr. Blofeld 05:23, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

BTW I was saying to User:Faizan that we should try to get a Pakistan article up to GA like Islamabad or Lahore. Can you think of one you might like to collaborate on?♦ Dr. Blofeld 05:25, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your prompt rely. I'll search it up further to see if they are the same mosque or not. As for the collaboration, I'd always be up for it and try to pitch in as much as I can. Let me know if there is such a collaboration in the near future. Personally, I would pick Islamabad as probably easier to spin a GA out of, as the other city articles are an awful mess and would be a heck of a task. :) Mar4d (talk) 12:29, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Aboisso Airport

[edit]

The article Aboisso Airport has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

There's nothing at all there on the map, this place doesn't exist through searching for it, and from the amount of trees located at the coordinates provided it seems as if it has been either gone for a very long time, or never existed in the first place.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. | Nayptatalk opened his mouth at 06:10, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Perhaps Mjroots can look at this one? On google maps I see what looks like it might be a very rough landing strip but little else. I wouldn't have expected a modern national sized airport anyway.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:16, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Comment - the presence in the article of both IATA and ICAO codes would indicate the the airport does indeed exist, This source confirms the codes are correct and therefore the airport exists. Mjroots (talk) 06:45, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Can you add a source and remove the tags then Mjroots?♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:53, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Done - but you could have done this. Mjroots (talk) 07:00, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. Well, it was more likely to be reverted if I removed the tags myself, that was what I was getting at, not that I couldn't have sourced it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:19, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
  • Except we're not supposed to revert to readd PRODs. Once a prod has been declined, by anyone, the next step is AFD. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 07:20, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Godfather I and II

[edit]

Just finished watching these two for the first time (Part I yesterday and Part II today). Both are great films! Also, thanks for The Shawshank Redemption (I watched it on Movies Now HD, which featured with subtitles). A top notch film! Absolutely loved it! I still cannot understand how such a film could flop at the BO. BTW, did you watch Thiruvilaiyadal yet? — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 11:10, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Great, I knew you'd like them! I don't think I've got around to seeing Thiruvilaiyadal yet. Some other films which are must see immediately ones are La Confidential as I suggested earlier, Double Indemnity (probably the smartest plot of any film I've ever seen which you can at least understand), and Rosemary's Baby and Peeping Tom. Rosemary's Baby and Peeping Tom are creepy but revolutionary cinema. You will be thrilled anyway haha! Great older comedies worth watching in particular which spring to mind It's a Gift (1934), My Man Godfrey (1936), Bringing Up Baby (1938), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), I Was a Male War Bride (1949), Adam's Rib (1949), Monkey Business (1952), Hulot's Holiday (1953), Some Like It Hot (1959), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1968) and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). Ferris Bueller is a good candidate for best teen comedy ever made IMO, you'll love it, too cool for school! Don't be put off by the age of some of the earlier ones I mentioned, they're hilarious and all well worth watching. I'm sure Lugnuts and MarnetteD concur.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:37, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

The AFI lists are really very good, they know what they're talking about. While the order of some of them are disputable, any cinephile perusing AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs will agree that those represent some of the very funniest, and you'll spot many of the ones I mentioned in it. They're well selected.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:53, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Thanks again for your suggestions, Doc. I'll definitely watch them. You can add more suggestions over here. I am actually planning on Bringing Up Baby and Adam's Rib for now. I have completed expanding my list of films I have seen thus far and I have also created a special list of films here. Ssven2 Speak 2 me 17:07, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Trust me though, LA Confidential, Rosemary's Baby and Peeping Tom all must be seen asap!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:12, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Sure! Most definitely! BTW, is Rosemary's Baby scary? Ssven2 Speak 2 me 17:17, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
One of the most "creepy" films yup, without a doubt, with a wonderful atmosphere, it's just in my top 25 greatest films. Peeping Tom too, the first film I know of to really get inside the mind of a serial killer, it's a majestic piece of cinema and like Shawshank, a failure upon release and frowned upon. ;-) And to think that Peeping Tom was so shocking to audiences at the time that it ruined Powell's great career, if it had been made 12 years later Powell would have been hailed as the greatest!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:18, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
If so, then I'll definitely view LA Confidential, Rosemary's Baby and Peeping Tom by this weekend. I really enjoyed Shawshank though. Kinda inspired by the Alexandre Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo (the film makes a mention of it as well!) The protagonist is accused of a crime he hadn't committed. I would say Andy Drefusne was Edmond Dantès and Red was sort of like Abbé Faria. Even the tunnelling to freedom part as well. — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 17:27, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

The double twist towards the end of Shawshank is one of the greatest triumphs in world cinema IMO. Yeah watch Rosemary's Baby (1968) and Peeping Tom (1960) in the night if you can.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:28, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

I'll try my best. LOL Ssven2 Speak 2 me 17:30, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Double Indemnity was the other must see, one of the most intricate crime thriller plots ever devised! Genius! These films really stand out to me and I've seen a fair few ;-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:32, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Definitely by this week's end, I'll have completed watching them all. BTW, nice work on Meryl Streep. Hope to see her article as an FA. — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 17:36, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. The one great great comedy to watch is really Ferris Bueller's Day Off if you want to watch a comedy, you'll absolutely love it for sure. It's pure fun. Imdb agrees :-) Happy viewing!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:41, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! BTW, I saw your rating for Meet the Fockers. Haven't you seen Meet the Parents yet? Ssven2 Speak 2 me 17:52, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Of course I have LOL. Is it not on the list? There's still a whole bunch of films I've forgotten to add, especially series, the Home Alone and Police Academy ones I've still not bothered to add etc! I'll get around to it!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:54, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
I'm afraid not. No. Meet the Parents has not been added yet. I completely agree with LOTR at No. 1. All the three films had "Epic" written all over it in my opinion. Return of the King was the first ever film I saw outside India in theatres (in Singapore in the Jurong East area). Ssven2 Speak 2 me 17:56, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
If you consider the three LOR films as one, and ever have the time and energy to watch all three back to back, without a doubt, the most fantastic film ever made by some margin, they're stunning on many levels and literally take you into a different world. There's others which I think are more fun to watch, but you've got to marvel at the wizardry and awesomeness of it. My personal favourite in terms of enjoyability to watch is The Back to the Future Trilogy, which I've been watching at least once a year since I was about 7 or 8!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:04, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Ssven2 I can back DB's mention of L,A, Confidential 100%. I just rewatched it last weekend and it is marvelous. It takes the complicated plot of the book and makes all of the twists and turns work. It is also a treat to watch two relatively unknown (at the time) Aussies be such believable 1950's L.A. cops. It is also head and shoulders a better film then the one that won the Best Picture Oscar that year. MarnetteD|Talk 18:12, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

James Cromwell for me should have won an Oscar for his performance!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:17, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Gonna watch Peeping Tom now. Just finished Anand. An absolutely simple and touching film! Loved it! — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 08:36, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
L.A. Confidential is a masterpiece. Some of the best written characters I have ever seen on screen. Easily ranks among my top 5! And MarnetteD, agreed that it deserved Best Picture more than Titanic, even though that film appeals to my deeply ingrained love for old-fashioned melodrama. --Krimuk|90 (talk) 09:07, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
They're all masterpieces! Double Indemnity too!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:31, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
Absolutely. One of the smartest thrillers of all time. --Krimuk|90 (talk) 09:41, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
Watched Peeping Tom. Great film! Thanks for recommending me this film, Doc! — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 10:41, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

I rather like Martin Scorsese's quote: "I have always felt that Peeping Tom and 8½ say everything that can be said about film-making, about the process of dealing with film, the objectivity and subjectivity of it and the confusion between the two. 8½ captures the glamour and enjoyment of film-making, while Peeping Tom shows the aggression of it, how the camera violates... From studying them you can discover everything about people who make films, or at least people who express themselves through films." Rosemary's Baby next?♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:46, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Rosemary's Baby's next, then North By Northwest, I Know Where I'm Going! and the Blue Whale of Hollywood, Citizen Kane. — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 17:56, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

@Ssven2: the best plots are in Double Indemnity and Shadow of a Doubt, I'd watch Shadow before North. Shadow of a Doubt was actually Hitchcock's favourite I think. I don't think you'd like I Know Where I'm Going! as much as the others. Citizen Kane is the sort of film you really have to watch several times to fully appreciate, first time I thought it was overrated and didn't fully appreciate it as much as I now do. You might think differently! Sunset Boulevard also always springs to mind when you say "best plot" or "greatest film ever made".♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:09, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

@Ssven2: I would add to DB's comments by saying that there are two (well probably more than that) ways of watching Kane. First, is to see it just as a film. Second, is to be aware of its historical context in the world of filmmaking. The first is easy and I have known just as many people who don't like it as those who do in my time. The second adds all sorts of context. Hollywood had not seen anything like it when it was released. Many of the storytelling devices, camera and lighting techniques etc etc were brand new. This is a good documentary about it. I know that this can be a bit much as you sit down to watch it for the first time so I hope that all of my blah blah doesn't ruin it for you. BTW you might want to read our chat here User talk:Dr. Blofeld/Great films#Sacha Guitry about a director/actor who was every bit as amazing as Welles. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 18:36, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Finished watching Rosemary's Baby and I Know Where I'm Going!. I liked both of them! Gave them both a full 5/5 rating. — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 10:31, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

@Ssven2: Was Rosemary's Baby extraordinary or what haha? Watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off, LA Confidential and Double Indemnity next! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:19, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, it was a great film. Not that creepy though (like The Omen). I also really liked I Know Where I'm Going!. The curse of the lady of Kiloran "He shall be chained to a woman to the end of his days and he shall die in his chains." proved to be a boon for Torquil and not a bane. Ssven2 Speak 2 me 14:36, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Not creepy? What can be creepier than watching the Devil impregnate a woman and people watching and then the neighbours and even the husband knowing that the Devil's child is growing inside of her and feeding her concocted shakes to supplement its growth LOL? The atmosphere of it was a lot creepier than Omen. The scenario of it IMO is the creepiest I've ever seen, perhaps with the exception of 120 Days. Perhaps The Omen was scarier, by creepy I don't mean scary. @Ssven2: Watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off next!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:44, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

I'll definitely give Ferris Bueller's Day Off a look! Ssven2 Speak 2 me 15:51, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Watched Citizen Kane today. I really liked it, not because it's voted as the greatest film of all time, but for its message on how a man should and should not be in life. Kane wanted everyone to dance to his tune, which is evident in his relationship with Susan Alexander, and also here —

Emily:Really, Charles, people will think...

Kane:...what I tell them to think.

But that's easier said than done. Enough was never enough for him. The scenes where Susan receives her vocal training and the opera scenes really were ROFL moments. Ferris Buellers Day off is up next. Ssven2 Speak 2 me 12:18, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

The Rose Bud thing is the real genius for me. Citizen Kane is the sort of film you can watch half a dozen times (like I have) and still discover new things. The way it's made is quite brilliant. To really get the most out of it I urge you to watch it again at some point, as first time the viewer focuses more on the subject of the film rather than the underlying message and devices I think. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:41, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

I appreciate the film already and, as you say, it's quite new and innovative considering the time of its release. It still continues to amaze people even today. Sure, I'll definitely give it a look at some point again. — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 12:50, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
@Ssven2: Some new suggestions here, but watch the others I mentioned first!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:03, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Just finished Sunset Boulevard. One of the most outstanding and touching films I had ever seen! Thanks, Doc! Watching What Ever Happened to Baby Jane next. — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 08:17, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Finished watching What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?. Truly one of the best films I have ever seen! — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 10:47, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Krimuk and myself do intend taking it to FA at some point, but I feel it's OK for GA now and is a good part of the way there.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:56, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
I've finished my part of the initial review and as usual done my part with all the prose issues I could find, but overall the article is very enjoyable! I think I spotted a couple of incomplete references, but like you said it might benefit from SchroCat or Tim riley to have another look. JAGUAR

Your GA nomination of Meryl Streep

[edit]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Meryl Streep you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Jaguar -- Jaguar (talk) 19:00, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Inspired by working on Park Lane, I just knocked this up, with a vague idea of seeing if we could improve all the articles that are places on the British Monopoly board. I've done a bit of artistic licence and put Tower of London as "In Jail" and Battersea Power Station as "Electric Company", amongst others. Have a look and see if it gives any inspritation. Sadly, as you might expect, most articles are Start class, Pentonville Road hasn't even got its own article! Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:43, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Haha, nice one! To get all of those up to GA??♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:42, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

That would be brilliant, but let me set a modest goal for now which is - all of them at C class or above. Should be doable with just a few London encyclopedias or guides. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:46, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Do you have space in your diary for a PR?

[edit]

Hi Doc, After a recent re-write, the Hitler Diaries are now at peer review, should you have the time and inclination. Any and all thoughts on the article are most welcome. Cheers – SchroCat (talk) 11:59, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Will do, tomorrow if I can, cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:42, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Many congratulations on Meryl Streep, now a GA (also good luck if you want to take it beyond), who is truly one of the greatest actresses of all time. BTW have a look here. You may suggest a hook there. Apologies for not asking you before nominating. -- FrankBoy CHITCHAT 20:13, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Cheers FrankBoy. Well, I think it can be researched more fully in newspapers and google books and interviews etc to really ensure it's the best possible article which will take some time before taking to FAC, but I think it's decent for GA anyway. Claudia Cardinale and Audrey Hepburn too hopefully by the end of the summer. I don't know about a hook, you decide, but please also credit User:Krimuk90 and User:Dr.K.. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:22, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

The dates in prose are in American format (month day, year), but not in references (day month year). There are some issues of consistency and linking in references. Mind if I give it a go? -- FrankBoy CHITCHAT 16:36, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Sure, of course. I prefer the date like 4 July 2015 though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:49, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

I spotted that during my "guest star" edit of the article. They probably should be US dates, but I added my refs in UK format for consistency and no other reason. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 19:18, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
I suspect there's quotation mark inconsistencies and other minor MOS issues needing sorting out too, feel free to go through it anybody.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:42, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
With the best will in the world, I find activities like changing DMY dates in references to MDY about as exciting as watching grass grow. The silly thing is though, it's the sort of activity that Rich Farmbrough could fix in ten minutes with a two line Perl script - if Arbcom hadn't banned him from doing so. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:03, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
Indeed I could fix it with the click of a mouse. However all is not lost, User:Ohconfucius is a good person to sort these things I believe. I have created a corrected version of the page at Meta if anyone want to cut-and-paste it back. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 20:13, 4 July 2015 (UTC).

Re; Park Lane/Tyburn gallows

[edit]

Found a lot of newspaper hits for Park Lane but they're either old wanted or help wanted ads for an address on the street or they cover information already cited in the article. Take a look at this, though. The book is PD in the US; I didn't see a publication date on the Internet Archive copy, so had to go elsewhere to date it. No idea when Alfred Marks died. Hanging was only one part of the execution-they were first drawn through the streets in various manner, hanged and let down while still living. A butcher then disemboweled them, they and their bowels were then burnt, he/she was beheaded and the torso quartered. The book has passages where the odor of the burning bowels is described. At Smithfield, they were boiled alive. We have some images at Commons but if you want anything from this book, they all seems to be very comfortably in the "old" category. We hope (talk) 23:47, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Hanging, drawing and quartering (a FA well worth reading) was a standard form of high treason execution from the Middle Ages right up until the 18th century. It's gruesome, sure, but it's not particularly out of the ordinary as a form of punishment in those days. For Park Lane I would just link to a HD&C article, as it should be enough for the casual reader to understand context without having to go to the article in question. Of course, nowadays being more civilised we have a different form of hanging, drawing and quartering instead. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:44, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

  2. The Arbitration Committee hereby declares an amnesty covering:

    2. the subsequent actions related to that comment taken by Black Kite, GorillaWarfare, Reaper Eternal, Kevin Gorman, GregJackP and RGloucester before this case was opened on 29 June 2015.

@Ritchie333: Any idea what has actually been decided here?♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:15, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

I'm steady doing the Monopoly project - Whitechapel Road is now at GA too and it looks like Oxford Street will be next, just digging through the history of the listed buildings at the mo (there's a lot of them). I just noticed BTW that the only text to survive from Park Lane before the recent GA onslaught was the description of the bus routes, every else was a total rewrite! Proposed deletion of Allan George Richard Byfield

[edit]

The article Allan George Richard Byfield has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced biography of a living person

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Patchy1 10:34, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

By the looks of it he's "retired" so we won't have to, but that's until he creates a new account and does the same thing again. Unsourced BLPs are a problem of course and do need to be rooted out, but not in that deletionist approach. If he started going through them adding sources and removing tags I'd fully support him.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:40, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
Ok, good work. If we get similar again from a new account go for an SPI too. In ictu oculi (talk) 07:08, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Do we know anyone who speaks Portuguese?

[edit]

I found a lovely searchable 1950-1959 newspaper from Brazil. I also get 292 hits on "Paga" like that with no accent marks at all. I can scroll to the articles, but can't read them and since it is scans of the paper, not able to go into a translator. I did manage to extract the name of her ex-husband/annullment out of one article. It's a great resource, if we can utilize it somehow. And what I really want to know is if she sent that scandalous nude Christmas card (1954) because she was the first woman to have breast augmentation. I find 1 claim on a blog. Insufficiently sourced IMO. ;) here SusunW (talk) 00:56, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Okay, I found a couple more semi-reliable sources about it so it is in. She was untamed and totally fascinating. Still is a lot someone could do with it if they speak Portuguese. I found a biography that I could glean a little about her writing and painting career. The newspaper, as I said had a lot. I also didn't put in the UFO stuff, or the suicide attempts, but if someone thinks that is relevant ... I think you will like the photo. SusunW (talk) 05:26, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Oh, and Dr. B, her article screams for a Portuguese composer/musician category on Intertranswiki‎. I'm betting you could come close to a 10 person category just from the "ill" entries on her page. SusunW (talk) 13:14, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
Keep it in mind for later in the month, there's still a lot to plough through in the time being!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:24, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
LOL, I was thinking next month. This month seems daunting enough already. SusunW (talk) 15:19, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Don't know exactly what you need. The article was well translated and that newspaper only mentions that the Church did not annull her marriage, but nullified it (a lotta complicated law-terms there), there being a difference between the two terms here. Still too many red inks on the article. By the way, her stage surname may exemplify how scandalous she was. Oh, one more thing: she may eventually have been described by the papers as composer, but she wasn't. Krenakarore TK 20:00, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

@Krenakarore: thanks! I never saw her described as a composer but a songwriter, which I took to mean she wrote the lyrics. I usually manage to struggle through translations and get enough to make a piece. But I prefer someone to check the work if the sources cannot be put into a translator program. Neither that biography nor the newspaper could. Even then, nuances like annulled vs. nullified are distinctions a translator program might not pick up or an editor either. I obviously didn't. And yes, I loved the play on "pagan". Thanks for looking it over and yes, we need to work on Brazilian composers/musicians. SusunW (talk) 20:50, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
No need for apologies once your work, very good by the way, is not the one being reviewed here. Even the papers at the time misinterpreted the information (the way I would). That newspaper simply published what the Church said. You're right, she did write a samba-canção entitled "Cassetete não", where she denounced the practices inflicted to criminals by police officers in Rio. The word "songwriter" might well be applied here, if you see fit. As for her marriage, some sources say it was in 1939 (the well-off Duvivier was 30 years older than her - some other sources say she was 13 at the time, and having been born in 1920 her marriage might have happened in 1933, although I haven't found anything that year), lasting till 1941. Here again we see conflicting information once some sources say it lasted only a few months, having her family demanded the Church to nullify it a few months later. As for her bikini, she torn her "maiô" into two pieces during carnival, thus being the first woman to exhibit a bikini in public. I know about her, as Brazilian, but I had never dived into her life. She was a declared "enemy" of Luz del Fuego, and both vedettes used to "recreate" voodoo rituals (with black chicken, cigars, cane-rum and farofa) at their respective dressing-rooms. As she died recently, if you excuse me this last decade, many living artists still remember her and the impact she created in our '40s-to-'60s society. Krenakarore TK 21:42, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
@Krenakarore: I saw references to del Fuego, butt mostly in references to shows they did together. Also a couple of references that indicated the move to Rio was a parental kidnapping by her mother. I left all that out as who knows if it was part of the myth building? What to leave in and what to leave out in this case is truly unfathomable ;) What we know is she was very unconventional and whether society liked her choices or not, they were hers to make. I give her huge cred for thumbing her nose (well, it probably wasn't a nose) at convention. SusunW (talk) 23:11, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

So glad that you liked it Ssven2. I can recommend that you watch it again every few years. I first saw it back in the 80s and thought it among the best films I had ever seen. As I've aged repeat viewing give me a better and deeper appreciation of it. Also my life's experience has lead me to understand some elements of the story better then my first viewing. Shimura's performance is extraordinary. If you compare and contrast Watanabe with Seven Samurai's Kambei, IMO a person could be forgiven for thinking that they were two different actors. Throw in the woodcutter from Rashomon as well to see just how wonderful an actor he was. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 17:38, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Glad you like it Sven! Kurosawa's best film IMO, and I can now say that comfortably having seen all his films! Yes, Ikiru is incredibly moving, I rate it the second greatest film I think, for a very good reason!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:48, 15 July 2015 (UTC) Also recommended, which reminds me of it at times, is Make Way for Tomorrow, which Marnette recently enjoyed too. The last 30 minutes in particular are among the most beautiful in any film. Also Grave of the Fireflies, Sansho the Bailiff and Floating Weeds spring immediately to mind. Sansho is a brilliant film, but Grave of the Fireflies might be just as moving as Ikiru which I urge you to watch!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:49, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

It's best to forget that places like ANI exist and avoid whatever drama is in the "current news" since that results only in headaches. The areas I am best able to work in suffers from "language barrier and systematic bias" pretty heavily. Despite people's inherent belief that "popular culture" dominates Wikipedia, it doesn't - and the propensity to purge or remove problem content is a big issue that goes beyond "stubborn editors" listing. I could go on, but I rather work on an article than worry about someone who doesn't understand that independent and reliable sources with substantial content on a topic conifer "notability". Just remember that I had to fight tooth and nail to have an article on Dragon Ball Z. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 05:00, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

Well, you may as well do it then in that case, I'm sure Krimuk won't be too devastated! Don't be too excessive though, I'm struggling to see the worth in editing here at the moment!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:52, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

The article Claudia Cardinale you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Ritchie333 -- Ritchie333 (talk) 17:00, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

I think I have done what I can with this but have left a few comments on the review page which you might like to address. Despite the rules, I am not too happy about reducing Burt Lancaster to Lancaster (or even Brigitte Bardot to Bardot). And if we are going to go for last names only for further instances of the names, a lot more changes will be required throughout the article.--Ipigott (talk) 11:19, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

I read a description of it in google books Jeffq. Plus on wiki atlas I found shipwrecks and their coordinates and in the articles read that they sunk in the Kythira Strait. So it should be accurate. On the precise location of the 1630 earthquake it's not known exactly. Confusingly some point it to the southwest coast but that's not Kythira.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:20, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, that's about what I found when I did some more research. It's even more frustrating because el:WP doesn't have a corresponding article on the strait, nor did I find any mention of "Στενό Κύθηρων" (Kythira Strait) (or "Στενό Αντικυθήρων" ((Antikythira Strait) using its search box. Question regarding an article and featured article process

[edit]

Hi there. Around 2 years ago, when I nominated an article for FAC, you mentioned that it should have gone through a peer review first. I'm in a similar situation now where I am considering nominating 24 (TV series) as a featured article candidate, however the previous and current peer reviews received/have received no comments. I'd rather not nominate it for FAC and be ripped apart for not taking it to peer review, however the article to me looks rather good at this stage and it's feedback that I need to improve it to featured status. You're quite familiar with the process where I have no experience whatsoever, I was wondering if you could give some feedback on the article or advice as to how I can proceed from here? While it's not a "serious" article as I've been told before, I have worked away at it over the years and would like to make it as good as I can. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 01:27, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

The best thing I think would be to reopen the peer review and request some of the FA regulars to read and review it before nomming. Ask a dozen odd people who regularly contribute. I would, but I'm on a break from reviewing at the moment.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:24, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Adding images

[edit]

If you wish to add/update images to/in some article, you can find them here. Mondadori should be added to the search string to "ensure" that the image is Italian. The image should be taken in 1975 or earlier, for Italian+URAA copyright reasons. If the caption says 1970s then we can try, but that would be risky. Mondadori has tons of good images, and I've hopefully covered areas that interest me most (sport, science), but somehow I am not much into browsing articles on actors/actresses, and this is where Mondadori are good - you can easily have dozens of headshots per person. If you give me links to images then I'll clean them up (remove watermarks and other unneeded features, rotate, crop, etc.) and upload on Commons. Materialscientist (talk) 01:52, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

Wow - someone didn't bother to check before they template now did they? Worse is that the text (copyrighted in 2014) exists on Wikipedia in 2012. [2]. Got it started

[edit]

Hello DB. You will see that I have started the Steiger list article here Rod Steiger on stage and screen. It is going to take some time to get it in the proper form. When you have the time could you flesh out the lede and add any pictures that you think are appropriate. Thanks. MarnetteD|Talk 22:29, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

It would have been interesting to be in the audience to see Claire Bloom and Steiger in this. MarnetteD|Talk 01:57, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
Cheers MarnetteD, much appreciated, that's a big help. Perhaps Cassianto and SchroCat or a page stalker could help add TV roles? Yes indeed on seeing Steiger and Bloom on stage. I have a major crush on Bloom admittedly, and might consider getting her up to GA at some point too!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:12, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
I haven't got anything on Steiger, I'm adraid - and neither does my local library. Sorry! - SchroCat (talk) 10:00, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
@SchroCat: The TV roles are on imdb and presumably be sourced elsewhere. No worries though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:04, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
But it's the "elsewhere" that's the problem - getting the reliable sources, which I don't have. I've always struggled to get a reliable source of US TV listings - the UK is relatively straightforward, but the US is a problem for me. - SchroCat (talk) 10:08, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Good news and a question

[edit]
A hard working Wikipedian scrambles to find 90 year old sources after some dweeb sends his silent film article to AfD

I've decided to begin working on the Thanhouser films - it was a bit of a blow to my confidence when someone stated that Wikipedia should not have articles on these films. They may not be masterpiece articles given the long-lost status of many, but the combining of single reel releases and the condensing of "fillers/documentaries" and such is of great value. I've come into a collection of new documents and materials... and since I begun the project more "lost films" have been found making it amazing that in 20 years how much had been found and recovered.

I've however been deeply stumped by other major companies... Kalem, Biograph and the other Edison Trust are almost completely lost. Aside from the D.W. Griffith project (which I do not have access to), I fear that it may be nearly impossible to get a list of productions for many of them! You wanted me to work on the 1920s... which is much better preserved, but I have chiefly American sources - was there a company you want me to tackle? Do not say "Universal" - unless you are going to do a lot of work with me on it. Now that I have Braff's collection, I am completely and 100% overwhelmed by even the prospects of "organizing" more than 9000+ works into digestible and manageable formats without someone like you to whip me (and it) into shape. Or you think Universal is of paramount importance that should be tackled with gusto? ChrisGualtieri (talk) 04:56, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia's full of meddlesome little assholes who'll try to get in your way. Great editors like you and Carlossuarez46 should never be put off from creating new content because of them all. We're much better off as a resource having decent articles on Thanhouser films, and I urge you to all that you can on them. Here's my list of 1920s films I've seen, ones in bold in particular are great and should be brought up to GA status. The ones in the gallery are the best films for each year and the real priority though. If you could save this list somewhere and keep them in mind. I've done one only so far, Wings (1927 film)! I was considering doing Metropolis next, a truly remarkable film Ssven2. The 1920s is one of our weakest areas of film coverage, so to get some of the notable films up to GA status would be a big achievement. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:24, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

I'm sure my good friend MarnetteD would agree on the benefits of getting films like Nosferatu, Metropolis and Safety Last! up to GA. Safety Last in particular is iconic, and the image of Lloyd hanging on the clock tower one of the great icons of silent film. I did a lot for The Sea Beast a while back, I think that could be brought up to GA with very little work.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:33, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

I'm am going to work on The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923 film) - it gets about 27,000 views a year, but that is far more than my Thanhouser works put together. Popularity and page views doesn't mean value, but I could hardly believe there was no production or reception of the film and scarcely any cited sources. Some of the films look to be pretty good and Greed is a FA, but I think I'll need your assistance to get past the 1a criteria for FA. Well, when the time comes that is. No, as I think there's more to this than just frustration with you, but you can be a pain in the arse at times and should stop warring with him.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:26, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

I just wanted to correct him that's all.I didn't mean to frustrate him. It's that he takes my reverts otherwise. Are you really not angry with me?—Prashant 16:30, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
Wikipedia can be frustrating, but I doubt the doctor is mad at you. Perhaps displeased with the whole farce, but not angry. Infoboxes

[edit]

I was rather surprised to read your reaction here, could you please calm down about infoboxes? Yes, I disagree with your view about their use and not by today, this does not mean I want to hurt your work, rather the opposite, in fact I just consider a bio article without infobox rather visually poor and non-standard, in spite of it being a start-class, a good article or a featured one. I just consider them an improvement, not certainly a degradation. Should I lose respect of someone because of having such an opinion? So be it, but I do not use to change opinions depending on who is the author of an article. --Cavarrone 07:03, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

You should have stayed out of that one as it was opened by somebody now blocked for stalking me. If somebody does an 80kb expansion of an article and develops it from a crappy starter article I think you should simply respect the judgement of the author. When I removed it the article had a short lede and it looked even worse. I wouldn't have removed it if I genuinely didn't think the article looked better without it. In general you don't see me going about removing infoboxes, as I at least respect that others like them. I will be taking Steiger to FAC by the end of the summer as I have a biography coming in the post and once done I'll open a PR.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:23, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

This will take a lot of work but while reading, I kept encountering William Douglas, 4th Duke of Queensberry AKA "Old Q" and "The Star of Piccadilly". He loved Piccadilly and never wanted to be far from it-spent many years at 138 there. Old Q lived to be 86, was a gambler and had an eye for the ladies until the end. He had a balcony on his house where he would sit and watch for attractive women to come by. In earlier years, he would leave the house and catch up with the woman who had caught his eye, trying to entice her to come to his home for a visit. After he got older, he had a type of ramp built onto the balcony for ease in getting downstairs and after that, he would call out to the woman he'd spotted, inviting her in.
He could be a very generous man; when he knew he was nearing his death, he offered a favorite servant the choice of leaving him now with a generous severance or staying until he died to be named in his will. The servant was very fond of Old Q and said he would stay with his employer until the end of his life. The servant became a very wealthy man as a result of Old Q's will. Have found 2 books at Internet Archive which detail quite a bit about him and are viewable to everyone: We hope (talk) 15:55, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

I've fixed all the content / citation issues I can find (everything is now sourced) properly and addressed most of the issues in the review. I won't have a chance to do the rest until late tomorrow (probably); can you take a look? I don't think there are too many left. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:01, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: Cheers. Can't see any ones you've missed though. Just starting on the Beverly Hills Hotel.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:07, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Sands Hotel and Casino

[edit]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Sands Hotel and Casino you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Jaguar -- Jaguar (talk) 11:00, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

FAC issues

[edit]

I commented on Kailash29792's second solo FAC Kalidas (1931) which was reviewed by you for GA status. Here, i commented that four book references show problems. In depth, they show a comment "Changes scheme from http to https and truncates url" in yellow boxes here. I have been told to consult someone who has experience as a FAC reviewer at the Teahouse. Please suggest me whether this can be fixed or not. If not, can i lend my support there, since the rest were done? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 11:58, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

No idea what's wrong with it, sorry. Best of luck with it though Kailash29792Dr. Blofeld 12:00, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

WP:Intertranswiki

[edit]

I've had much stuff to deal with IRL so am behind on the Dutch monasteries and note that we're now at the end of the month. There are three outstanding - could you leave them open / carry them forward, as I should be able to get them done at the weekend. (For next month I was thinking of Italian cathedrals - masses still to do, and Italian is quicker for me than Dutch). Best wishes, Eustachiusz (talk) 13:15, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

@Eustachiusz: Sure, although we usually try to complete all red links listed by the end of the month, I'm going to finish some of the waterfalls off later. Italian cathedrals sounds good. Best.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:20, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

@Eustachiusz: I sub stubbed the three remaining ones. Feel free to add to them in your own time in the next week.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:01, 31 July 2015 (UTC)
