If you go search LeafyIsHere on the search bar, you will be directed to this article. It will direct you to the part where Leafy is supposed to be. Alphabetical ordering

I certainly do agree that the list should be alphabetically sorted, but currently the names are sorted by people's first names- shouldn't it be sorted by people's last names?? Isn't that generally the standard method of alphabetical organizing when it comes to peoples' names? Either that or I feel like they should possibly be organized alphabetically by the person's Internet alias, assuming the person has one..? What do you guys think?? Rewrite Needed

As of now, the page, probably needs a complete rewrite, can we open a discussion on adding the {{Cleanup rewrite}} tag to it?

It lacks famous youtubers like domics and tom scott, and probably many others. The layout has a lot of blanks, unlinked and unreferenced text. The requirements to be added to the list are also inconsistent.

This might be only my opinion, but it is probably worth diqussing

185.120.125.41 (talk) 20:54, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

If you are willing to rewrite it than go ahead. Who is Domics? Tom Scott? You might want to be more specific with names. Plus you need to proper spelling as misspelled "discussing." Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 21:57, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
Probably better not to rewrite if the idea is to include famous YouTubers not already included. The purpose of the list is not to list "famous YouTubers" but to list notable YouTubers for which we have Wikipedia articles. If they do not have a Wikipedia article, they shouldn't be listed. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 22:00, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

Alphabetic order issue

If we're listing individuals with YouTube channels, shouldn't they be listed in alphabetic order by family name instead of first name?? In English, the most common order of alphabetizing personal names is by family name. — Dale Arnett (talk) 01:34, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Proposal to split this list by genre

Should we make a list article out of this which lists the YouTubers by their genre? We commonly do this with artists, and YouTubers can easily be placed into multiple defining categories which we already have as categories, and in their articles sourced with RS, and we already have references in this article. We can also do it by nationality, I believe genres are a slightly higher priority now, at least here.

  • Support as nominator and keep this list separately with a "(full)" or "(alphabetical)" suffix. wumbolo ^^^ 19:30, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
  • Oppose Genre can be really subjective. Zero Serenity (talk - contributions) 20:02, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
    • @Zero Serenity: In this category, we can't possibly mistake a comedy channel for a beauty and makeup channel. There might be overlaps but in my experience, it shouldn't be an issue, except in commentary channels, which can be news, politics, comedy, entertainment and opinion, these should be combined into a commentary genre. I am open to discussing something like "non-genre-based film categories". This list seems to contain fine categories, as we can classify YouTube channels as animation channels, drama, comedy, etc. I hope I was clear that YouTubers can appear in multiple genres, e.g. if they have one comedy channel and one gaming channel. Sometimes we will have to discuss the genre on a case-by-case, but I expect that to be a tiny minority. I believe the vast majority of the channels' genre is not contested in RS, and we must use RS for this. I am not proposing a specific genre categorization, we need to vote on that, so I'm merely proposing it now. Cheers, wumbolo ^^^ 20:21, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
  • Kind of confused by this proposal. It sounds like you aren’t really proposing a split, but rather a series of content forks while keeping this list intact? I don’t see the point of that. The list is not overly cumbersome an the sortable table helps with navigation. So my question is: what problem would be solved by doing this? Beeblebrox (talk) 20:32, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
You might want to change the wording of your proposal then, since split has a specific meaning on Wikipedia, and it most certainly involves creating more articles. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:47, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
@Beeblebrox: I'm not sure how I should word it. wumbolo ^^^ 20:51, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
  • No. many YTers split genres, and it would make too many lists. Lists can't really bulky IMO, they are made for searching and finding information, not casual reading. People like me who enjoy reading lists just have to deal with length. L3X1 ◊distænt write◊ 13:02, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
@L3X1: Looking at this and the subcats, there are much less YouTube genres than there are genres of other media. The lead section for YouTube says that there are "video blogging, short original videos, and educational videos". If you want, I can give you an example of at most five genres so that all YouTubers in this list can fit in at least one genre. wumbolo ^^^ 15:16, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
Behold! A YouTuber has been sent to tell us! :) L3X1 ◊distænt write◊ 13:40, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
@DatGuyonYouTube: YouTubers may be notable for more than one genre, which means they should then be included in each genre, wikilinked only in the first genre they appear in. I don't have any examples of truly miscellaneous YouTube channels. Please note that I don't mean strictly thematic genres as in literary genres, so someone can cover dozens of themes but the channel itself would belong to the "commentary" genre, which includes podcasts. wumbolo ^^^ 15:16, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
YouTubers by genre is unnecessary, in one YouTube channel there can more than one YouTubers and how can you call a YouTube channel 'YouTuber' when you don't know who is behind it. Take Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell's' example, we don't know how many YouTubers are behind it but we all know it as a YouTube channel that is why it would be appropriate to categorize topic/genre by YouTube channel and nationality by YouTubers. I propose that the article Adam Saleh be merged into this article with basic/sourced information. The article appears to be a fan site and self published and it was actually created as a redirect. We can redirect it here with sourced info only deleting all unsourced/fan page content.119.160.98.31 (talk) 16:18, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Strong oppose. This list is too long as it is right now. wumbolo ^^^ 16:29, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
  • Obvious oppose. Whether the proposer is aware of it or not, doing this would overturn the established consensus that this page only lists persons wh have their own, free-standing article. The precedent this would set could easily lead t this page becoming unmanageably long and cumbersome. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:00, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
  • Very much oppose - Like everyone above me said, it would go against the established consensus that this page only lists persons who have their own, independent article. What we should do instead is fix the article in question and improve it. --DatGuyonYouTube (talk) 13:22, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
  • Strong oppose as this is a list not an biographical article. Like Beeblebrox said, it would become long and cumbersome if we merged biographical articles into a list. Reorganization ideas

Prompted by the last AFD and the fact this article has been hard to navigate, I propose the following changes:

  1. Create an article YouTuber (currently a redirect here) that discusses the phenomenon of YouTube celebrities and the impact (e.g. [1]) in detail (see Draft:YouTuber, anyone is welcome to add to it)
  2. Remove the references from this article. The references are a relic of the pre-February-2017-RFC consensus when the inclusion of artists that have no article was possible. Since we only include artists with articles now, it's sufficient that those articles are referenced. This list only needs references for information not in the linked articles. That should cull a lot of the size of the page checkY
  3. Clarify that this list should only include people who are primarily known for their work on YouTube. Artists like Psy might have had a huge impact on YouTube but he was a notable artist before that (our article about him dates back to 2006, long before Gangnam Style)

Thoughts? Ideas? Opposition? Regards SoWhy 13:40, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

So basically:
  1. Assess notability, and
  2. Create a separate Youtuber article.
About the Youtuber article, do you have a draft yet? What would the format be? I also agree with removing artists like Psy because YouTube isn't their notability, the song that happens to be on YouTube is notable. Zoom (talk page) 14:43, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
There is a draft now at Draft:YouTuber but it's just the current text in a separate article. As the sources mentioned in the AFD demonstrate, one can easily write a pretty long and detailed article about this group. Unfortunately, I am not the best article writer, so I would defer to anyone with better skills. Anyone is invited to add to the draft I mentioned. Regards SoWhy 14:55, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

So there is a list of LGBT YouTubers. That's all fine and well. But it's seem like they are listing people who have YouTube channels and not just people who became notable because of YouTube. Jazz Jennings for instance didn't become notable because of YouTube. That list should be held to the same standard as this list. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 05:29, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

A YouTuber is not always someone who became notable due to YouTube. In general the term YouTuber is used for those who create content intended for dissemination via YouTube. An article about what is an YouTuber would be actually quite valuable for an encyclopaedia.--DreamLinker (talk) 18:46, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
The point of this list is for people who became notable because of YouTube. Lauren Southern is a YouTuber but isn't listed due to her becoming notable via a host and reporter with The Rebel Media. There are millions of YouTubers in the world, but that doesn't mean they should be listed. Jazz Jennings became notable, not because of YouTube. Therefore, she shouldn't be listed. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 00:54, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
"The point of this list is for people who became notable because of YouTube." That is not intuitive at all. A List of YouTuber should be a list of people who are or have been considered as YouTubers - those who have uploaded and created content for YouTuber. A YouTuber is not someone "who became notable because of YouTube" but someone who creates content meant for YouTuber.--DreamLinker (talk) 04:27, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

@L3X1: Fair enough. But let me pose this to you. Should the list split into other lists of the kind of YouTuber they are such as comedy, news, vlogger, musician, etc., etc.? There is a list of LGTB YouTubers. It would definitely help in making the list a lot smaller. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 14:39, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

    • Prefer to keep the references as theyve been added so the reader doesnt need to go to the articles to check an entry if they do not wish to, thanks Atlantic306 (talk) 16:04, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
Having the references in the article bloats the article text without adding anything to the article itself. There is not policy-based reason for having them and people "having" to check the person's article for it is not really a hassle. With 250K+ size, this page is extremely hard to edit, especially on slower devices. I strongly suggest we remove the sources (again) and just leave them in the articles about the artists themselves. Regards SoWhy 16:14, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
I agree. When every entry is a blue link, refs are not needed. If proper refs aren’t present in the linked article, it will get deleted and will be removed from the list. Getting rid of that field will make this article easier to edit, which outweigh the “hassle” of having t click on an entry to see the refs used at its actual article. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:20, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
As it is a question of page size I withdraw my objection, but in general I believe refs are best in lists because regardless of the policy there are a number of editors who will try to delete them by prod or afd on the pretext that they are poorly referenced or have no refs, thanks Atlantic306 (talk) 18:47, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
But if the articles have no sources and this list does, that's the problem right there, no? Regards SoWhy 19:05, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, User:Fishhead2100, I misconstrued you answering fair enough to L3X1's argument we don't need references was you conceding to the point. I would argue references are not needed for policy (as shown above), do not add much benefit to a reader (because the content is in essence sourced in the blue linked article already), and are cumbersome for the article making it bulkier, slower and harder to maintain. Therefore, they serve no benefit and should be taken back out. Alduin2000 (talk) 17:05, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

@Alduin2000: How many people go to the articles and check the references? That's why it is good to have references here for those that done. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 18:48, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
@Fishhead2100: Not many people would look at the references full stop. The references are to make sure the information is verified but the information here doesn't need references to be verified; it's verified by the article. The people who check and look at references are editors when checking them etc. but information can be easily checked by an editor by looking at the linked article (this is just as easy as clicking on the reference). The difference is keeping all these references is it makes the page slow and harder to maintain. Alduin2000 (talk) 19:02, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

RFC: Should the article contain references to verify that the entries are YouTubers?

The following discussion is an archived record of a request for comment. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
I think consensus is pretty clear here. With noone opposing, I removed the references. Regards SoWhy 13:59, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

See above section for context. Since February 2017, all entries on this page need to have an article. As such, the question remains, whether entries on this page need references as well or whether it's sufficient that those references are in the articles this list links to. Since there was some back and forth already, I'm starting a formal discussion to ascertain consensus.

Question: Should the references column and the references contained within be removed?

Regards SoWhy 16:59, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

Support

  • As previously stated, I believe the references are no longer needed since all references should be in the articles about the artists themselves. If they are not, they can be moved there (from the history). The length of the list including references makes editing much harder and nothing in WP:V requires us to actually have references on this page if they exist in the articles themselves. Regards SoWhy 16:59, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
  • I'm going to copy my argument from above: references are not needed for policy (as shown above), do not add much benefit to a reader (because the content is in essence sourced in the blue linked article already), and are cumbersome for the article making it bulkier, slower and harder to maintain. Therefore, they serve no benefit and should be taken back out. Alduin2000 (talk) 17:07, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

  • As per the top of this very talk page, This article should only contain notable YouTube personalities who have been discussed in reliable sources and already have their own Wikipedia article. Entries without a Wikipedia article will be removed. So first, the entries have to include a Wikipedia article. And second, to accomplish that, they need reliable sources. If there are enough reliable sources that a Wikipedia article can be created, there is no need for adding an additional source on the main list, since it is already established that the YouTuber is notable. epicgenius (talk) 14:31, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Support I actually mentioned this when we changed the inclusion criteria but nobody else said anything so I let it go. They are not needed in list articles where every entry has its own article and would make the page easier to manage and edit. Beeblebrox (talk) 16:41, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Does the "Country" column specifically refer to a channel's country of origin or current location? I noticed that PewDiePie is labelled as being in Sweden, even though he hasn't lived there for quite some time. If the column refers to a channel's country of origin, then it should be labelled as such, or, we could list all of the countries from which channels have been based. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RobotGoggles (talkcontribs) 21:49, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

There's some Brazilian notable youtubers who could be in this list, who have over one million subscribers and reached visibility above their country (tehy have way more influence than the few Brazilians cited here), such as:

- PC Siqueira - maspoxavida (vlogger) - Cauê Moura (humor, critic, politics) - Nando Moura (politics with some humor and music) - Felipe Neto (entertainment, miscellaneous) - Vinheteiro (music) - Kéfera Buchmann - kefera (vlogger, miscellaneous) 2804:14C:DA96:4776:E853:F56D:5951:9A17 (talk) 00:30, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

The red links Cauê Moura, Nando Moura and Vinheteiro (Fabrício André Bernard di Paolo?) are not yet on enwiki and cannot be listed until that happens, readers must be able to check the notability here. For the blue links PC_Siqueira, Felipe Neto and Kéfera Buchmann the wikilink and the BR-flag are clear, please add the name of their show (as shown on their channel) and what they are known for (short, no essay, as in other existing list rows). –84.46.52.5 (talk) 04:20, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

Stefan Molyneux

I don't think Stefan Molyneux fits the criteria for a notable YouTuber. He just uses the platform and is infamous outside of YouTube. Thoughts? I'll leave this here for a while so others can weigh in before I potentially change it; I do recognize that he has a number of subscribers, but that isn't all we're looking for here, surely. Perennialpoet (talk) 19:49, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Almost 1M subscribers, but as you said, it's no popularity contest. The BLP has YouTuber in the first statement of the lede, right below {{infobox YouTube personality}}. The apologetic notes column in the list entry doesn't match the BLP, it could say far-right, white nationalist Canadian podcaster or something in this direction, e.g., known for Alt-right, racism and white supremacy. –84.46.53.228 (talk) 23:58, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
Added on BLP/N without a {{BLP noticeboard}} here, because I don't know how blpo=yes cases are handled on BLP/N, if at all. –84.46.53.207 (talk) 00:44, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
As you've mention our article says "far-right, white nationalist[2] Canadian podcaster and YouTuber who is known for his promotion of scientific racism and white supremacist views.[3][4][5][6][7]". I have the idea I checked these sources before for some reason, but in any case, if you have doubts you're welcome to check them and raise issues on the article talk page. Frankly the what you quote is far more generous to Molyneux but you're welcome to rework it. The anti-feminist stuff isn't discussed in the lead, but is discussion in the article body, with sources so could likely stay. Nil Einne (talk) 14:05, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
Noting that while you can't edit the article directly, you're welcome to use the editprotected template. Come up with an exact proposed wording with sources so that someone can simply copy and paste your text, add the template and it's likely someone will make the change for you. Will do (=try if I can) when the BLP/N section is archived, and nobody here has done it yet. I hate race conditions, when an apparent consensus turns into a TOOSOON debate. –84.46.52.59 (talk) 21:44, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

Please update the Notes column for Stefan Molyneux using the info in the lede of the BLP as discussed above and on BLP/N:

Just in case, you can also use Alt-right, racism and white supremacy or whatever you like better than the current essay.
The SPLC source in the BLP has "anarcho-capitalist" as obsolete (limited to a decade starting in 2004), and Anarcho-capitalism is tagged with "insufficient context" + "confusing or unclear" + "needs additional citations" since July 2019. –84.46.52.200 (talk) 16:55, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

An embedded Template:Infobox YouTube personality info on Jimmy Dore shows 655,000 subscribers + silver button. Genre political satire + medium stand-up comedy are also covered in the infobox, the lede has stand-up comedian. (Everything in the infobox + lede is by definition sourced, unsourced nonsense under 1RR rules is unlikely). "YouTuber who most commonly does real or fake videos"?

It does not make much sense, because every video can be real or fake.

How about: YouTuber who most commonly does "Real or Fake" videos? 85.193.242.185 (talk) 23:45, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Sorry, you comment seems irrelevant and makes little sense. Please explain. Sundayclose (talk) 01:55, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
@Sundayclose: Well, natural language (especially English) is ambiguous, and just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's nonsense.
The sentence "YouTuber who most commonly does real or fake videos" can be understood in three different ways:
  1. Each of his videos can be real or fake. In other words it's like saying that any woman can be pregnant or not. Yes, that's true because she can't be "a bit pregnant". However, this sentence conveys no useful information.
  2. Some of his videos are fake.
  3. He makes videos that make the viewer guess whether something (a photo, another video, etc.) is real or fake.
Of course we want the last variant, and that's why I proposed "Real or Fake". Now I think that "Real or Fake?" would be even more precise. [The] Quotation [quotation] marks are relevant too. 85.193.242.185 (talk) 15:46, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
A small amount of context would help for those of us who have been speaking English for 70 years and have no idea what you're talking about. We can't read your mind and can only go by the words you write here. Please tell us specifically which parts of the article to which you are suggesting changes. Which YouTuber or which videos do you refer to? Are you suggesting that we classify every video as either real or fake? Or are you simply musing about whether YouTube video in general might be real or fake with no relationship whatsoever to this article? Sundayclose (talk) 15:55, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
@Sundayclose: Oh my got. Are your serious? The phrase "YouTuber who most commonly does real or fake videos" is very easy to find in the article (especially for someone who made almost 20,000 edits). All you need is to copy the phrase and paste it into the search widget in your browser (e.g. Ctrl+C, and Ctrl+V under Windows). The YouTuber name is Bill Day. Good luck ;-)
PS. Have you been speaking English for 70 years? If so, you must be almost 70 years old. Really? Please excuse my curiosity :-) You are nice and communicative, which is (for me) more important than the problem I found in the article :-) 85.193.242.185 (talk) 17:34, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
Ah, knowing that you are referring to a specific YouTuber helps. His article says he has a series named "Real or Fake", but that is unsourced. I changed it to "documentary filmmaker". Sundayclose (talk) 17:59, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

The lede - suggested change

The lede contains "...mostly known for their work on YouTube across various notable channels." which seems to suggest that, to count as a YouTuber, a person cannot be better known for something else, even if that happens after they became known as a YouTuber.

I have already brought up a similar point on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:YouTuber but this is not quite the same issue: I think that the criteria to be called a particular thing is different to the criteria to be in the related list on WP. (I could rightly call myself a cyclist without qualifying to be in List of cyclists for example.)

Also, is "notable" being used in strictly WP sense, in other words do the channels themselves have to be worthy of their own articles? (This is not necessarily implied, because this sentence is aimed at the general reader, not necessarily a WP editor.)

And, is it part of the criteria to be known across various channels: ie more than one channel.

Also, the lede tries to define what a YouTuber is (in the second sentence of the lede), whereas it should (just my own opinion?) be defining what this List of YouTubers is. (And leave it up to the article YouTuber to say what a YouTuber is.)

So I suggest for the lede of this article, simply:

"This is a list of particularly well-known YouTubers."

Any technical criteria intended for editors I think is best left for the Talk page.

"...known for their contributions to YouTube...": criteria please, and where was discussed?

The Attention! box at the top of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_YouTubers&action=edit contains the statement:

"Also, please do not add artists who are not known for their contributions to YouTube even if they have a YouTube presence and are notable by Wikipedia's standards."

The box has two permanent links about consensus reached. I have followed both links and can find nothing about this stipulation.

Can anyone provide further information, such as what the criteria for being "...known for their contributions to YouTube..."?

Is it possible this was added after the consensus discussion?

FrankSier (talk) 14:00, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

That phrase should be removed. It's far too subjective. If someone is notable enough for a Wikipedia article, and that article indicates (with reliable sources) that the person is a YouTuber, that's sufficient. That's the way most lists on Wikipedia work. @13Aah: Go to Help:Introduction for general information about editing Wikipedia. Right now this article is semi-protected; for details about that restriction go to WP:SEMI. Where is SMG4?

Someone please include SMG4.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.12.145.44 (talkcontribs)

We don't have an article about SMG4 so it is not eligible for inclusion. It is mentioned in Meta Runner but not in a way that makes me think it is notable enough for an article. I have not researched it any deeper than this but I note that attempts have been made to convert the redirect SMG4 into an article and that they have all failed and been turned back into a redirect. --DanielRigal (talk) 19:33, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

The threshold for inclusion in this list is sufficient notability according to our guidelines so that an article can and has been created about the subjects in question. You are welcome to create an article if you believe this ti be the case and then, afterwards, request inclusion again. Regards SoWhy 08:08, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
