Dunmore's Proclamation

In the main article pertaining to Dunmore's Proclamation, no mention is made of the effect that the proclamation had on southern colonists and the resulting incorporation of such colonists (who were formerly loyalists) into support for revolution. The primary cause for this movement was the potential loss of slaves for slave-dependent sugar and tobacco growers. I feel that this is an integral element of this chapter of history and ought to be explored in this article. Ornithological?

Why does your banner {{USHistoryTalk}} claim your projects purpose is to create a "standardized, informative and easy-to-use ornithological resource"? It would make more sense to focus on US history than on the study of birds. Anomie⚔ 00:18, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Middle Colonies

The Middle Colonies article is in an appalling state. In recent months, the article has been almost entirely a massive copyvio cut-and-pasted from http://school.discoveryeducation.com/teachersguides/pdf/ushistory/ul/mt13c_the_middle_colonies_tg.pdf

For some reason, the article also appears to be a vandalism magnet. Is it perhaps this years' school assignment somewhere?

I've now removed the whole thing by reverting all the way back to an older version of the article. (Note that although the current version of this article, as of the time of this comment, appears to bear a strong resemblance to the text in http://en.allexperts.com/q/General-History-674/Middle-Colonies-1.htm (dated 10/25/2007), the Wikipedia text has been taken from an earlier Wikipedia revision dated 7 June 2007, which pre-dates the publication date of the allexperts.com article.)

Even without this issue, the older version is still completely unsourced, and still reads like a school essay, paraphrase, or cut-and-paste job, although I can't currently find a source candidate. Would someone like to rewrite it from scratch? -- The Anome (talk) 01:01, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Northwest Territory

I've talked with a couple other users about forming a task force for the Northwest Territory, to improve articles about the U.S. Midwest regional history before state boundaries were drawn. Manifest Destiny

This article is a good essay on the background and history of the concept of Manifest Destiny. It is often vandalized (especially during the school year), and on occasion attracts folks who wish to assert a point of view, rather than just letting the facts speak for themselves. (An example of the latter might be the recent addition in the introduction of the assertion that Manifest Destiny was used "to justify the genocide of the Native American populations"; the word "genocide" does not otherwise appear in the article.)

I have started a discussion on the talk page concerning the religious influences on the concept. A critical eye on the article itself would also be appreciated. Kablammo (talk) 13:47, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

IS THERE ANYONE STILL ACTIVE ON THIS PROJECT?

I am only asking this question since there have been no posts since June and have recently decided to begin peer reviewing and expaning upon articles in the feild of United States History. If possible I would like to revive the effort of expaning upon the selection of U.S. History articles by not simply focusing on the most well known and debated aspects of American History but instead focusing on stubs and untouched aspects of history that will provide a more thorough and complete explanation of the United States.

I have begun this task by reviewing and expanding upon George Washington's Farewell Address. Although I am happy with the content I am positive that it is need of wordsmithing, proofreading, and peer review. My hope is that one of the members of this project will join me in this project since I have failed to find a taker in the United States project.

Somersett's Case the catalyst for the US Declaration of Independence???

The article says,

"Somersett's Case ... It is one of the most significant milestones in the campaign to abolish slavery throughout the world and is largely acknowledged to have been the catalyst for the 1776 United States Declaration of Independence."

To an American, this is an astonishing statement, since Americans think of the Intolerable acts and other actions of King George III and Parliament, and not of this case. I have added a fact template for this statement.

Uniform Bill of Lading Act and Uniform Bill of Lading Act of 1916 articles

We received a query on the Help Desk about the above articles.

An editor asked if these were the same Act, and I suggested that perhaps they could be merged.

However, another editor mentioned that 64th United States Congress#Major legislation lists:

• August 9, 1916 - Uniform Bill of Lading Act of 1916
• August 29, 1916 - 2nd Uniform Bill of Lading Act of 1916

Could someone more knowledgeable possibly look at the two articles and see if they refer to the same Bill, or whether they cover the two different bills - in which case the articles will need to be amended/moved accordingly.

Proposed Move Discussion

I have proposed to rename three articles to more accurately affect their scope and content:

• African-American Civil Rights Movement (1955–1968) → American Civil Rights Movement (1955–1968)
• African-American Civil Rights Movement (1896–1954) → American Civil Rights Movement (1896–1954)
• African-American Civil Rights Movement (1865–1895) → American Civil Rights Movement (1865–1895)

As a historic fact, a diverse group (and not just African-Americans) were involved in this movement. In addition, the movement fought for the rights of all Americans, not just African-Americans. Its leaders esposed a "big tent" strategy to involve a broad based support. Most Civil Rights legislation addresses discrimination based on race, religion or national origin, and a title that focuses upon racial discrimination distorts the topic. Quality Scale Examples on Assessment page

Several of the Quality Scale Examples are out of date (e.g. Eric Bana is now a FA quality not a GA quality article). I replaced the one for the Start Class (the old example was upgraded to B class), but others need to be gone through. Also the India link for the FA example goes to an old version of Australia. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. Colonial Governors

Hello people of WikiProject United States History!

I've worked a lot on wikipedia articles related with the history of the Americas, since that this is a topic that I´m interested. the case is I realized that, since a long time, all governors of states like Texas, New Mexico and Florida have articles on wikipedia since those states joined the United States, while only a few colonial governors of those states had them. In addition, articles by some of the colonial governors of Florida have little information and seek more of it. I thought it would be nice to all colonial governors of those states also have articles on wikipedia, because they are a bit forgotten in this encyclopedia. I've already looked for information and I've edited articles the some of these governors and I ask that, if interested, you also collaborate on editing articles from other governors of those states. The names of the governors of Texas, New Mexico and Florida are on the lists Royal Governor of La Florida, Spanish governors of New Mexico, List of Texas Governors and Presidents.

Declaration of independence

There is presently a debate over whether the list article Declaration of independence ought to include a hatnote pointing specifically to the United States Declaration of Independence. Those in favor argue that historical, demographic, and practical factors justify this treatment, while those in opposition argue that no country's document should receive special treatment under any circumstances. I am bringing the discussion to your attention because United States Declaration of Independence is included in this wikiproject. Please see here if you are interested in weighing in on the matter. Collaboration with WP:USRD

Hello. At WP:USRD, I have started a task force with the goal of improving U.S. Route 66 and any articles related to it. US 66 is by far the most viewed road article, so we at the project want to get the article in good shape and to do it we'd like as many hands as possible. I am still in the midst of organizing things, but I'd like to extend an invitation to help out. We're looking for a few editors who are interested in the history, landmarks, pop culture, and Americana along the Mother Road.

US National Archives DYK collaboration

This summer I am serving as the first Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives (see Signpost article); in order to serve as a hub for activity related to the National Archives' collaboration with Wikipedia, I have recently created a project page at WP:NARA. Since it seems relevant to this Wikiproject, I wanted to point members to our first editing project, which was recently announced and can be found here. The National Archives is an incredible resource for images and other documents related to American history. Status of this project

Greetings, I was looking at the list of WikiProjects at the WikiProject Council and it states that WikiProject United States History is inactive. I am not sure thats true and this propject is active I recommend changing the listing at the Council page. --Kumioko (talk) 16:46, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion to pull this project under WikiProject United States

It was recently suggested that this project might be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. I also noticed by looking at the list of projects at the WikiProject Council that the project is listed as inactive. Additionally, it doesn't appear by the talk page or project page that the project is very active. This discussion is intended to start the process of determining if the project is active or if members are interested in it being added to the projects supported by WikiProject United States. There is definitely a strong editor community working on articles within the scope of this project, however this forum is not frequently used. I think making this a task-force under the umbrella of WP:US would go along way to helping both projects. I think the WikiProject United States History, as a project over this country, it could add the WikiProject United States. I don't disagree. I do believe that the collaborative efforts of both groups may improve the quality of the articles. I'm not exactly sure what we would be 'giving up' so readily... I'm also not clear on where the charge of being 'interested in current events, not history' is really coming from, or if that is necessarily a bad thing given the nature of History as a discipline. All those editors are interested in is current events, not history. Just to clarify this isn't intended as a hostile takeover of the project. It would still remain mostly autonomous (except the banner) and would still be best served with a project leader to focus on items and articles related specifically to this project so if you are willing I would encourage you to do that either way.

The only significant thing that would change would be the WikiProject template (We would replace the banner with WPUS with WPUSHistory under it like you can see on Talk:Internal Revenue Service with United States government and the project would be added to the list of projects supported by WPUS. Thats pretty much it. Additionally, the bots which currently support WPUS would be adjusted to include US History, a topic for US Hisory would be added under Category:United States articles by topic, the members would be added to the US Newsletter (which they can get without being members of the project if they want it), the project would get an expanded user visibility (though the newsletter and WPUS project page), etc. This project would still be able to independantly do as much or as little as it wants as far as content drives, working on articles, discussions on the talk page, etc. --Kumioko (talk) 17:51, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Kumioko, listen to yourself. You seem to have lost your leadership touch. We're only a little inactive cause there hasn't been any motivating factors for the project recently. If we merge with US, how'll that change our situation? Answer, it won't. This project will just lie in the shadow of the other, more popular project, and we'll still have the same inactivity. Only difference will be that it won't be acknowledged due to the fact that it is now a part of US project and that project isn't inactive. I don't really agree that this project would be forgotten anymore than the Military history task forces are forgotten under the Military history project. Its no problem though, take all the time you need. Like I mentioned above if the project doesn't want to its fine with me I was just following up on a suggestion by someone else. Most of the articles in the project are already dually maintained by both anyway. I just thought it might be helpful to get this project going again. For what it's worth, I continue to insist (as I did from the discussion here at the discussion Kumioko mentions that the US Wikiproject be redefined with a start date (1783 or 1776). I have no stake nor opinion about if this project should be a part of Wikiproject US or not, just that there should be logically defined areas of expertise. FWIW, I can see some reason to the above statement. There are however some questions as to what project, if any, content related to pre-independence material would fall within the scope of. More or less, all existing geographical locations of the country fall within the scope of the related state projects, which are a form of subproject of the US project. If there were a specific subproject or related project for pre-US and/or Canadian independence related topics, and that might be the North America project or some other related project, that might work, or, alternately, it might make sense to perhaps create such a group if there is sufficient interest. Well, I don't take no offense, since I am only member of WP:CAL, WikiProject California covers about the former country, before becoming a statehood in 1850, not the state by itself. Look, I do not want to add WikiProject California under WikiProject United States any time soon, since WP:CAL has many members and five task forces including Los Angeles and Southern California task force under WP:CAL. Since WP:TEXAS covers only about the former country, not the state by itself. As for those 2 examples both of those projects have a lot of members and activity so it really wouldn't be much of a benefit to add them to WPUS. I also don't know how to go about adding a project with multiple subprojects or task forces. Thats something that hasn't come up yet. There are a few states that would probably benefit but right now I am more focusing on National level. In the next couple months though there will probably be a couple states added. I have also been talking to some of the states to pull in the cities and other inactive projects that relate to that state. Seattle and Eastern Washington in to Washington for example. What I am going to add the WPUS banner to the remaining 450 articles that are in WPUS History and not in WPUS so that way the articles are dually maintained by both projects. It has been over a month since the last comments were left and it appears that a couple of the members of the project oppose being added to WikiProject United States. If I am incorrect in that assessment though please let me know but for now it appears that the members of the project have spoken and do not wish to be supported by WikiProject United States. Would like uninvolved assistance with Redeemers

The Redemption (United States history) article has been begging to be merged with Redeemers for a very long time. Many discussions to merge the pages have gone stale, the latest set of tags was applied sometime last year. So today I boldly merged the two, and would like someone to check my work and see if they agree with my choice. If the page needs to be moved to the other namespace, that's fine with me. But I'm just not seeing why two separate articles on the same political phenomenon need exist. Better to get disagreement now so I could easily revert. Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Fall 2011 Photo Contest

WP:NRHP is having a Fall Photo Contest running from Oct. 21-Dec. 4, 2011. I'd like to encourage anybody who enjoys photography, as well as anybody who is interested in historic places to participate as a photographer, a sponsor, or both.

One way that an individual editor or a project can participate is to sponsor their own challenge. For example, somebody here might want to include a challenge such as "A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds the most photos to the NRHP county lists of previously non-illustrated NRHP sites that are related to steamboats on the Mississippi." To sponsor a challenge all you need to do is come up with an idea, post it on the contest page, and do the small bit of work needed to judge the winner(s).

99 Percent Declaration

The 99 Percent Declaration has a difficult history. The article is nominated for deletion and rescue. The original author, a criminal defense attorney for the Occupy Wall Street protesters arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge, has edited the article and has been continually reverted on the article talk page. The WP:SUMMARY and several sources have been removed by the nominator for deletion. It's the US Collaboration of the Month. I am working on a version at User:Dualus/99 Percent Declaration; please see. Dualus (talk) 06:58, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

That article does indeed have a "difficult history", much of which the above user has neglected to mention. Whatever the genuine merits of having an article on that topic, the article as created was built to house original research by the above user, already rejected at other articles, pushing the now-discredited claim that this document represented the official views of Occupy Wall Street, among other things. This helps to explain why it has been tagged for deletion since its creation.

A person claiming to be the original author of the document later inserted, directly into the article space, a disgruntled personal message to Wikipedia readers about his purported mistreatment and marginalization by the Occupy Wall Street movement. This, naturally, was reverted in short order, whereupon User:Dualus took it upon himself to copy the message to the article's talk page, after which it was removed from the talk page as well (presumably because angry user-generated manifestos are not ordinarily seen as relevant to improving an article of any sort).

The "WP:SUMMARY" Dualus refers to was, in fact, an exhaustive point-by-point rephrasing of virtually the entire agenda contained in the document (again, containing OR)—in my opinion, not tremendously different from a copy/paste job of the original—and in any event, containing far more detail and enthusiasm than an encyclopedic tone would seem to allow.

The comment regarding "several sources removed by the nominator for deletion", meanwhile, undoubtedly refers to the removal of this material, which is full of OR and questionable sources, and whose connection to the article topic, is, itself, the product of WP:SYNTHESIS.

The article is, indeed, currently listed as the U.S. Collaboration of the month. It would appear that this is because Dualus made the listing himself, after deciding for himself that it should be the next collaboration of the month.

Finally, the user's personal version of the article hosted in his userspace, which he has here invited editors to inspect, seems to be a project which has been discouraged.

And this is all to say nothing of the fifteen or so other Wikiproject pages the user has canvassed, or his repeated listing of the document alongside major historical documents such as the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, apparently unconcerned by the notion that perhaps an anonymously authored list of demands by a group of U.S. political protesters perhaps doesn't share the same stature as declarations of policy promulgated by the United Nations.

The above background may prove useful to any editor wishing to have a fuller understanding of what has been going on at the article listed here.

Proposal to add WikiProject United States History under WikiProject United States

Greetings, I am a member of WikiProject United States, it was formerly recently suggested that WikiProject United States History might be inactive or semi active and it might be beneficial to include a project for it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States, which Kumioko have added some of the projects like WikiProject American television and WikiProject United States Government, after I've opposed to pulled the project myself. After reviewing the project it appears that there have not been any active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. This discussion is intended to start the process of determining if the project members are interested in the project being added to the projects supported by WikiProject United States. A Proposal

Below are some ideas on restructuring and revitalizing WikiProject History. It may be easier to keep discussion in one place, perhaps here.

General Points

• Restructure the front page so that it more closely resembles that of WikiProject Military History. This design is easy to navigate, and getting to specific areas of the WikiProject is made quicker and less difficult.

• Forge closer ties with some of its "daughter" projects. WikiProject History should serve as a focal point for history-related article improvement drives and discussions, and should be a community of editors supportive of smaller, fairly inactive region-specific history projects.

• Expand the A-Class review process. This should be a major function of WikiProject History (conducting A-Class reviews for smaller, "daughter" projects).
  • Work on expanding the number of History Good and Featured articles.

• Host task forces devoted to improving recently-created articles. Some editors should work with WikiProject Deletion Sorting to save as many quality history-related AfDs as reasonably possible.

• WikiProject History should be less of a "front-lines" WikiProject, like the Military History one, but more of a coordinating effort. An enhanced A-Class review process and forging relations with "daughter" projects would help to achieve this goal.

Membership and Leadership

• All current WikiProject History members would be members of the new, revitalized project. WikiProject Military History members, as well as members of all region-specific history projects, would be automatically inducted into the project, although these users could opt out at any time.

• All members of the WikiProject should have an equal say in WikiProject affairs.
  • However, a group of five coordinators should be elected by all editors that are part of the abovementioned categories to make the WikiProject "flow" smoothly. These coordinators would serve for twelve months each, and would be elected in February of each year.
  • Each coordinator would have a specific task, or "department".
    • Chief Coordinator. This coordinator would serve as a guide to other coordinators and members of the project.
    • Assessment and Review Coordinator. This coordinator would sort reviews, with the help of two delegates that s/he could appoint.
    • Membership Coordinator. This coordinator would deal with membership issues, and would direct and judge "contests" on the project.
    • Resources Coordinator. This coordinator would assist members in need.
    • Content Coordinator. This coordinator would work on improving articles in need, and would direct efforts and drives related to this.

Role on the Encyclopedia

WikiProject History should be a visible, important part of the encyclopedia, as it should work to coordinate other projects and direct various task forces and drives on the website. Newcomers interested in history should be assisted and guided by the Resources Coordinator and other helpful editors.

WikiProject History should work together with other projects to achieve some of the goals of the encyclopedia as a whole.

Racial Diversity in the U.S. Classroom

I am planning to expand the stub article Diversity in the classroom as part of an assignment for my Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities course at Rice University. Specifically, I would like to focus on racial diversity in U.S. classrooms, which I feel makes the page relevant to the U.S. History WikiProject: it concerns historical and modern-day affairs in the U.S., including segregation, Brown vs. Board of Education, and Affirmative Action. Specifically, I would like to define racial diversity in the classroom, give its background in the U.S., cite research on its effects, summarize its social implications, and list and explain current policy on racial diversity in schools in America. My sources will include textbooks and readings from my class, newspaper articles, academic journals, etc. By becoming a member of this WikiProject, I hope to help identify, edit, and expand articles on United States history. Pinchot-Ballinger controversy

Hi, I think there are some problems with the article on the Pinchot-Ballinger controversy.

• It's rather sketchy and inadequate as a resource. It covers the basic facts of the scandal, but little else.
• It appears to rely entirely on only two sources, each of which is used as a footnoted citation exactly once.
• My research indicates that the consequences of the scandal (the split in the Republican Party in the 1912 presidential election, leading to the election of Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat; and the rise of future U.S. Supreme Court justice Louis Brandeis to the national stage) lend it importance. If this is indeed so, they are not discussed in detail here.
• It contains neither a historiography of the scandal nor much information on how the scandal was perceived at the time.

I'm going to do my best to expand the article and fix these problems, but I'd be interested to hear if others agree that I've pinpointed the right areas for improvement. Timber Trail (talk) 18:34, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Edits to the "Diversity in the classroom" page

Amanda, apparently I made the same bad mistake here as I did in Chloe's article and actually implemented the changes I initially suggested. There's no use in undoing them, but consider it huge favor. Nevertheless, here were general suggestions that I followed and that you should, too:

1. You need a Reference and/or footnotes list. Just follow the generous example I provided you with and you should be fine. I noticed you had listed the citation within the text when I was in edit mode, but due to technical errors, they were not displaying properly. Fix this.

1. You're completely lacking a "See also" section. You need to include at least a handful of links to related pages so that your page has a much larger chance of generating traffic. Possible page links could be included towards Race, Gender, Native American, African America, Jim Crow....pages like these will do fine.

1. Your "Americanization School" section could use some expansion. I feel that the concept of the assimilation-induced environment is important and deserves more information. List some of its negative effects on the minority children who were enrolled into them. Maybe even a quote or something from a notable figure who advocated such schools

Kentucky were Southern Unionist

Kentucky geographically is and was a Southern State. The Union soldiers from Kentucky called themselves Southern Unionist. They never considered themselves as Northerners, but Unionist. Religion of Founding Fathers

There has been an editor recently who has been going around to multiple biography articles on prominent American founding fathers and changing their religious affiliation to Deism in the infoboxes, and adding Category:American deists. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] My understanding is that this is only partially correct: They could be considered deists in the sense that they submitted religion to rational analysis, but were not deists in the sense that they rejected the idea of divine intervention. Anyway, I have reverted or tried to correct these edits on several articles, but it keeps getting added back. I would appreciate any input from people more familiar with the subject. For example this source states that Christians mix new age and Eastern beliefs with Christian ones. I can find many more such sources, including for other religions. Pass a Method talk 18:25, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Of course people can believe in more than one thing, which is one of the points I was trying to make above. These men were members of religions, but also believed in some tenets of deism. Whether or not this makes them deists can be debated, and there will undoubtedly be sources arguing both sides. But when you edit articles like Hugh Williamson (a Presbyterian who some call a deist) and Cornelius Harnett (an Episcopalian who some call a deist) and categorize both as deists without further qualification or mentioning the Episcopalianism or Presbyterianism, this becomes a problem in my view. ~Adjwilley (talk) 18:39, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Your point would be valid if i worded the additions in an exclusive/restricted nature. But i did not. I purposefully worded the additions in a loose and unlimited manner. For example, i could have said "so and so was a deist" or "so and so adhered to deism". Instead i said "so and so said he was a deist" or "so and so described him as a deist", thus leaving open the possiblity of another belief system. A number of scholars have done extensive research on the question of Hamilton's religion-- as a young man he did have many deist characteristics, but seems to have fewer of them as he aged. Citations on this difficult issue should be limited to solid reliable sources that demonstrate a full knowledge of the scholarly literature. Hamilton never called himself a deist. Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Project activity

I am confused so someone please help me out. I have been very active (I believe anyway) in not only creating articles related to history but editing them also. I have a full time job, working 67 hours this week, yet I still took time to research and start articles. History, or the project, is not semi dead to me but then I haven't had the time, nor do I really know how, to check all the activity out. For instance; I do not know what terminology "semi" means in the world of Wikipedia. Just the fact that "I" feel I have been far more than "semi" active, would make me want to remove the tag, I would like to know some criteria to understand the meaning of the tag.

• I actually came here because I started the article The Lacassane Company that needs a template (and looked over) and I have to get up early. I would be more "active" but the "light"(house) project set me back by renaming (some screwed up convention) articles against all that could be right with Wikipedia (like common name, historical name, both sometimes) so I stopped for a while. I have a lot of researched work but will not work on articles that are named wrong by "consensus". That is another story and I haven't had the time to look for a way to stop it.
• I drive a semi, am semi- tired, and would like to do more than semi- sleep, especially since I am semi- active. Alright then: that is enough on being "semi" so have a semi-good night. Otr500 (talk) 03:56, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

Revisions to the Housing Segregation article

I am planning on editing and restructuring the current Housing Segregation article. It belongs in the scope of WikiProject United States History but has yet to receive a quality or importance rating. I hope that my edits will bring up both the quality and importance of this article. It is currently lacking in depth of content and use of scholarly sources. I plan to provide a holistic coverage of this topic by adding material from reputable sources such as peer-review journal articles, published books, and articles from academic journals.

I plan on adding a "Causes of housing segregation" section, an "Effects of housing segregation" section, and an "Initiatives against housing segregation" section. My hope is that by adding material in these new sections, there will be a more comprehensive coverage of the topic. In addition, I plan on revising the current "History of housing discrimination" section by adding more content and creating two sub-sections: "Legislation" and "Government agencies". The legislation sub-section will focus on laws passed regarding housing discrimination while the government agencies sub-section will focus on the various government bodies dealing with housing segregation issues. I also want to focus on adding more content to the history section in order to provide context for the rest of the article.

If anyone is interested in the history of housing segregation, I would appreciate any and all feedback comments on the best ways to improve this article. I would love references to even more scholarly sources pertaining to the topic. Thank you. Aaie21 (talk) 01:12, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Wow, it's very exciting that you're going to do some concerted work on this topic. Housing segregation is a major world issue to which Wikipedia does not currently do justice. Here are some issues which come to mind readily:

• The article called Housing Segregation should probably expand to take a worldwide perspective—or be renamed to Housing segregation in the United States—as racial segregation in residential areas has a long history in Australia, South Africa, and probably many other places around the world. (All comments below pertain to the U.S.)
• In the history of housing segregation in the U.S., court cases deserve a section. One important case is Jones v. Alfred H. Mayer Co. (1968), which was unusual because the Supreme Court gave an unusual extrapolation of the 13th Amendment. Hansberry v. Lee (1940) and Shelley v. Kraemer (1948) outlawed restrictive covenants on housing.
• Another topic which deserves more treatment is the role of slum clearance and other urban planning policies. Through the years, especially since the 1940s, there have been many federal laws which financed changes to cities which resulted in de facto segregation.
• Right now, the article has three sections: history (through 1968), "Segregation and Neighborhood Disinvestment", and "relocation". All three sections contain good material but they don't add up to a cohesive whole. The middle section reads a little like an essay. Probably, a new section should assess the overall state of housing segregation today, using statistics and other facts culled from reliable sources.
• The History section could probably give more than 1 sentence to housing discrimination before 1934. Relevant issues include the failure of Forty acres and a mule; Black Codes; "Jim Crow" laws, and the Great Migration.
• The history of housing segregation from 1968 to the present is also glossed over. The article called white flight is fairly well developed with different topics related to this period. One factor it doesn't mention is the riots of the 1960s, especially the King assassination riots in 1968. Urban decay and deindustrialization might also be good places to look for more info on this period.

Looking for feedback on a tool on Visual Editor to add open license text from other sources

Hi all

I'm designing a tool for Visual Editor to make it easy for people to add open license text from other sources, there are a huge number of open license sources compatible with Wikipedia including around 9000 journals. I can see a very large opportunity to easily create a high volume of good quality articles quickly. I have done a small project with open license text from UNESCO as a proof of concept, any thoughts, feedback or endorsements (on the Meta page) would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that a latest article of the US History timeline is starting to get too long (It's now covering over 25 years). As on the talk page of the article, many people propose to split into two separate articles. Linking Saturday Night Massacre to Dismissal of FBI Director James Comey

There have been repeated edits linking Saturday Night Massacre to Dismissal of FBI Director James Comey via the "See Also" section. Given the current media speculation commenting between the two, this is understandable. However, how related the two will be in a historical viewpoint remains to be seen. At this time, I oppose making such links (and have opened up a conversation on the talk page about it).

American historians and diffusion

• Category:American historians is marked for diffusion and until earlier today, several subcategories by topic (altho not all), such as Category:American art historians were marked as non-diffusing. Obviously, this is a contradiction. I started out by taking the non-diffusing categories and putting them in the parent category and received some feedback questioning it. I have since removed the parent category and the non-diffusing tags (adding them back would be trivial, of course). I suggested that an alternate scheme for diffusing the parent Category:American historians may be by state and made a couple of these categories as a start: Category:Historians from California and Category:Historians from Pennsylvania. I am offering two questions to this WikiProject:

1. Should subtopic categories of Category:American historians be marked as non-diffusing?
2. Should Category:American historians be diffused by state?

Wikipedian in Residence at the University of Pittsburgh to facilitate the transfer of historical content into Wikimedia projects

Your support is solicited for the Project Grant that can be seen here. Part of the grant-making process requires notification of those who would like to support this project. I am the potential grantee and believe that this position will make a significant contribution to many projects. The University of Pittsburgh intends to release as many historical photos as possible into the public domain. Most of the archival materials are related to United States History. Other projects will also benefit. Some of these are Wikipedia:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America, Wikipedia:WikiProject Ethnic groups, Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, Wikipedia:WikiProject Pennsylvania, Wikipedia:WikiProject United States History, Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/American Revolutionary War task force, Wikipedia:WikiProject Pittsburgh, and Wikipedia:WikiProject African diaspora. Some of these WikiProjects are currently semi-active and would benefit from more contributions from those in the Western Pennsylvania region and the University of Pittsburgh. The University of Pittsburgh has significant archival and historical content related to gaps to these WikProjects. Thank you for your consideration.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.
