WP:NRHP Fall 2011 Photo Contest
If you like taking photos of historical places and buildings, you're in the right place! Photographers new to WP:NRHP are especially encouraged to participate. Challenge yourself and share your passion!
WP:NRHP is organizing this contest to run between 12:01 am (New York Time), Friday, October 21 and 11:59 pm (NYT), Sunday, December 4, 2011. Different editors or Wikipedia projects can sponsor their own photo challenges below. The only rules are that:
- Photos must be taken and uploaded during the given time period.
- The photos must be uploaded to Commons and include the category Category:NRHP Fall 2011 Photo Contest
- All registered users on Wikipedia may participate. If you are not registered, please click here.
- The sponsoring editor or project makes their own challenge, sets their own rules, and judges the results.
- The challenge must to related to photos of National Register of Historic Places sites.[1]
- Prizes (e.g. barnstars) must be offered.
- Participants in the contest must report their own results on this page in the form of photo thumbnails or diffs, which should show they they've met the conditions of the challenge.
- Judges must announce their decisions on this page before December 10, 2011. Note that judges may not need to check all the self-reported results on this page, but in some cases only the top 2 or 3 self-reported results.
- The decisions of the judges are final.
Details and definitions
- County lists - All NRHP sites are listed by county or sometimes in subdivisions of counties, e.g. National Register of Historic Places listings in Washington County, Ohio, or National Register of Historic Places listings in Evanston, Illinois. All of these are considered to be "county lists" for the purposes of this contest. These lists should be easily accessible by checking the state lists, e.g. List of RHPs in TN, or by a link under "See also" in the main article on the county.
- National Historic Landmarks are almost all also listed as NRHP sites. Lists of NHLs can be accessed via List of National Historic Landmarks.
- Non-illustrated site - if the county list does not have a photo or other illustration of a site it is considered to be "non-illustrated."
- If a site is already illustrated on a county list, and the challenge does not specify "non-illustrated site" then it is eligible if it is included in any Wikipedia article.
- Address-restricted (AR) site - the NRHP lists some sites as "Address restricted," in order to protect archeological and other sensitive sites from looting. Unfortunately they have made some obvious mistakes on this designation, and have no method of updating this restriction. Therefore WP:NRHP accepts photos of these sites if they are publicly accesible and their location is well-known. If you are unsure whether this is the case, it is best not to photograph these sites. Unless otherwise stated, photos of AR sites may be included in the contest.
- Diffs - Diffs show the result of your edit. To self-report that you've met the conditions of a challenge, go to your "My contributions" tab and click on "diff" next to the edit where you added photos to an article. Then copy the entire url and place it beneath the challenge you want to self-report on in single square brackets, e.g. [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_South_Philadelphia&diff=prev&oldid=454315954] then add a very brief description and sign with ~~~~ and your self-report is done. See example below Challenge #1, or Help:diffs for more help on diffs.
- Thumbnails - in some cases, all you need to do to self report is to include a photo within the <gallery></gallery> tags below the challenge.
- Subjective judging - for some of the challenges, by their very nature, judging must be subjective and you may disagree with the result. Kudos to the judges for taking on this potentially controversial responsibility. Of course, if you really disagree with the result, you may award a barnstar to whomever you consider the winner, all by yourself!
- Photos may be used to satisfy the conditions of multiple challenges.
Challenge #1 Most Sites added overall
[edit]A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds the most photos to previously non-illustrated sites on any county lists.

Challenge #5 Most Unusual
[edit]A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds a photo for the National Register of Historic Places site that is the oddest or most unusual.
Please put your self-reports below
-
Masonic Cemetery and Hope Abbey Mausoleum in Eugene, Oregon, behind a dead end sign
-
The Brattain-Hadley House in Springfield, Oregon, is scheduled for demolition. It may be the only site to be removed from the National Register on Halloween.
-
This isn't really a contest entry, but the Barney Flat Historic Railroad Logging Landscape is surely one of the most unusual sites in the NRHP!
-
Okay, another non-entry: Holy Rosary Catholic Church was listed on the Register a year after it was demolished and the new church building erected.
-
This is Navajo Hogan, a bar and restaurant in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado.
-
Technically, Hoover Cabin should fall in the tragic "All that's left" category, as it is the only remnant of the Log Cabin Inn in Lane County, Oregon. The other cabins burned in 2006.
-
The Leaburg Power Plant is at the top of the MISSED THE LIST category, prompting everyone in a recent poll to say, "That's the oddest thing," and "that's most unusual." The plant came online in 1930 and has a great art-deco mural. Why isn't it on the list?
-
"Sixteen battle stars and thirty-six years as a museum ship; all I got was this lousy wishing well," USS Yorktown (CV-10)
-
In the category, "Dumbledore Drank Here," is the 1927-vintage Lithia Fountain in Ashland, Oregon, where the mineral water is really, really awful.
-
Bomberger's Distillery, with a whiskey jug on top
-
Derry Session House and Enclosure, a log cabin church inside a glass house. Note that both are on the NRHP, in Hershey, Pennsylvania. "Congregations who have churches in glass houses shouldn't be the first to cast stones."
-
The Lutze Housebarn for rarity, one of twelve housebarns in the United States
-
In the CAN'T FIGHT CITY HALL IF YOU CAN'T FIND IT category, this sign is all that's left in Nampa, Idaho, of the demolished-in-1985-but-still-on-the-National-Register site. No one missed it but me.
-
According to NRHP Focus, there are 7 gazebos listed. This one is in someone's backyard in Reading, Massachusetts.

Challenge #6 Iconic 20th century architecture
[edit]A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds a photo of an iconic 20th century building on the Heritage Register, which is subsequently promoted to Featured status. "Iconic" means notable worldwide, usually rated of high importance within the scope of WikiProject Architecture. Suggested subjects: buildings by Mies van der Rohe (860–880 Lake Shore Drive Apartments, Seagram Building, S. R. Crown Hall, Farnsworth House), Rudolf Schindler (Schindler House), Frank Lloyd Wright (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Johnson Wax Headquarters, Robie House), Gordon Bunshaft (Lever House).
Please put your self-reports below
-
Architect John Yeon designed the Watzek House in 1936. It was placed on the National Register in 1974 and became a National Historic Landmark in 2011
-
Beth Sholom Congregation (Elkins Park, Pennsylvania), architect Frank Lloyd Wright, NHL 2007
- due to the challenging conditions required, this would take many months to determine if any photos are eligible. Smallbones (talk) 14:18, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- Indeed have to admit that I set the bar pretty high. But I am very pleased by the submissions and would like to award a Honourable mention to Smallbones for File:FLW Beth Sholom exterior.jpg which greatly improves the illustration of the article. Congratulations! --Elekhh (talk) 22:14, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

!Votes
[edit]Photo 1
[edit]- Lighting is everything; isn't it? Good timing! I think I'm particularly drawn to this photo because I'd love to move right in. Kepper66 (talk) 18:11, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
- This is well done, with excellent lighting. The sunset mood visually integrates the building with the context (yellow lines on the asphalt). Being such high resolution it can be further improved by applying perspective correction. My close second is #8 as it shows the building in its context very well.--Elekhh (talk) 22:18, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
Photo 2
[edit]- Changing my !vote, but only because this is too good to go without a !vote. I also like #7, but it reminds me too much of my mother-in-law. Smallbones (talk) 01:31, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Photo 3
[edit]- This and photos 2, 6 and 8 are the only ones to eschew the straight-on view of the subject building for the more dramatic corner angle (which I have always preferred, per what I learned in art class years ago). I like the simplicity of this image compared to the other two: the church and the gravestones in front. And as opposed to 6, I like the colors and lighting better here. The sky is a little dark and noisy, but that's nothing that couldn't be fixed. Daniel Case (talk) 02:30, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
- There's something I just love about a small church and cemetery. Teemu08 (talk) 17:53, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- This one seems to draw me in the most. 25or6to4 (talk) 05:00, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
Photo 4
[edit]Photo 5
[edit]- The building is spectacular, the angle done right but the colors is what does it for me. Royalbroil 00:55, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Photo 6
[edit]- Hard to pick just one, but I particularly like the soft light in this one: enough direct light to show the flutings of the columns, but not so much that the tree shadows add noise. Nice tight crop, too. Ammodramus (talk) 22:44, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'm going for this one also. It is a beautiful architectural shot and, in addition to the columns, shows off the frieze and pilasters wonderfully. Altairisfar (talk) 23:19, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
- My pick--Pubdog (talk) 01:59, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Photo 7
[edit]Photo 8
[edit]I like this best, for the pic quality and its subject, an elegant Federal style house with an octagonal cupola. --doncram 00:11, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
Results
[edit]Since there is a tie, I gave best photo barnstars to both Pubdog (for photo 3) and Nyttend (for photo 6) in recogntion of their great photos. Had I been able to vote I would have voted for photo 1 (which would have resulted in a three way tie), so I awarded an honorable mention to Smallbones for the photo and for organizing the contest in the first place. Thanks to everyone who participated, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:12, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
Challenge #9 Most Sites added in a Single County/Community List
[edit]A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds the most of their own photographs to previously non-illustrated sites in any single county. (The county list need not become fully-illustrated.) If the county was divided into lists by city/community on October 1st then that community list is eligible. Sites on community lists may not be added to a county total if they had been on a separate list. State lists are not eligible.
