To continue your brilliant exercise in orientation - take a look if you would at handing (no, it's not some perversion, it's absolutely safe for work. It is about work, that is, woodwork). Or let it do down the drains of Wiktionary? East of Borschov 21:10, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm, I'm betting that an article could be written on that -- it's a design decision, and one can find books that spend paragraphs on it. But those books make my head hurt. :-) Melchoir (talk) 00:17, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
- Any idea why the Toilet paper oritnetation page is suddenly active again? Is it being linked off site somewhere? I dont see it on the Main Page or as a secondary link from something that is. —Soap— 12:54, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Well, it's been linked from Fark, but the traffic spike started at least 12 hours before that link went live. I don't know what the initial cause was. Melchoir (talk) 21:31, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Block of User:Tcshasaposse
[edit]Some time ago you have blocked User:Tcshasaposse due to a conflict with the WP:NOSHARE policy. I wonder whether this issue could be solved in the positive since these user(s)' additions were quite helpful in the coverage of complexity-theoretic topics. It would have been a serious loss in qualified input if we'd just told them to go away. Unfortunately, the block entry points to the user talk page, which has been deleted. Can you provide some insight into this? Nageh (talk) 12:49, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Sure! The user talk page was apparently deleted as part of a now-defunct process; see Category:Temporary Wikipedian userpages and Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2010_July_12#Category:Temporary_Wikipedian_userpages. Since you've asked about its contents, I've simply undeleted the user talk page: User talk:Tcshasaposse. Thanks, Melchoir (talk) 21:27, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for the reply! I wonder though whether violating WP:NOSHARE was such a serious concern that the account had to be blocked. I'm worried that we may have lost help from a group of students. On the other hand there wasn't a lot of activity during the latter months so it probably wouldn't have changed anything. Well, thanks again! Nageh (talk) 23:22, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- No prob! Yeah, I'm not sure if I scared them away, or if they were done anyway, or if they found other ways to edit but never said so... or what. I probably should have been more patient. Melchoir (talk) 02:49, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

The article Euler on infinite series has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Not an encyclopedia article. This quote is not itself a notable topic for an article, and although Euler's treatment of divergent series might be sufficiently notable, that's not what's in this article. Has been tagged for transwiki for four years with no progress.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. —David Eppstein (talk) 04:25, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Opinion on APG III
[edit]Hi Melchoir,
First of all, I am flattered by your curiosity with my opinion on APG III system. As always I say: classifications are mere suggestions, with weak and strong points.
I was against APG I system by its tendency in to found only in researches in the chloroplast genoma and to do drastic changes in the Angiosperm families; and against APG II system by the informality of taxa (bracket taxa, plain clades, etc) and in a general way by its intransigence in accepting paraphyletic groups as being natural groups (and even polyphyletic, in my opinion: in essence all taxa are polyphyletic ones), because I see them it taxa as a structure more than three-dimensional, an element can in your two-dimensionality to seem not to have phylogenetic relationship with another, but arranged (graphically, like a reticular system) of another way like the three-dimensional manner this would be evident.
Other critic is that APG always tended to "lumping" taxa in entities unprovided morphological characteristics clear that distinguished them (i. e., the synapomorphies) turning them metaphysical "entities" without the necessary practicability to work with the real biodiversity.
But I have faith that APG in its version III made a very positive effort to improve the acceptance of its schema in a more universal way. I see this version as a "ripening". Cheers. Berton (talk) 14:27, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit]would you please consider un-protecting ITalkBB (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) please? I understand that "continually recreated" can be a problem, but permanently protecting a page which could be used to describe a corporation that actually exists based on the meager participation at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/iTalkBB seems like overkill, to me. Especially considering that you've salted the entire history by moving and deleting the userfied page as well (User:Banazir/ITalkBB (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)). Thanks.

- Okay, so the prose sucks, but that's not an excuse to speedy an article with four sources. I keep telling the newbies that sources are all you need to guarantee that an article survives; I'd hate to be made a liar on that account!
- They're categorized as saints because they're described in the book on saints. Unfortunately, I only have small snippets from Google, so I'm not sure exactly what the book says about their status. They're described in the census not in a listing of residents, but in an expository section about the town. Again, I have only snippets; I don't know the full context. The census seems to cite another source for the stories, but I can't tell what that other source is. And the census isn't carried by any libraries near me. - No, it's a format that web comics can take, rather than a webcomic in itself. In other words, it's more like Mobile comic or Pixel art than A Softer World or Dinosaur Comics. Hi
I noticed you were involved with the person who started the page, indeed some dialogue ensued between the two of you.
It appears that there may have been a little possibility of COI, as well as the copyright issue currently raised there. I do not know if there was any discussion over those two matters when the page was being created but, as the Wikipage was after the posted date on the website, you may want to weigh in on any discussions.
Thanks Chaosdruid (talk) 09:14, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the notification! Although there's a clear case of COI, I think the article isn't too promotional; it would be easier to clean it up than to delete it and start over, if that were the only problem. However, the copyright issue is thornier. User:Juliakeck might be the copyright holder, but she might not be aware of our free licensing. I'll run the article through the process. Melchoir (talk) 08:25, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- I figured that any discussions about Juliakeck sending a note from the original website might receive a more favourable response if it came from you than someone they have not dealt with before (assuming they are the same Juliak Keck!). Hope it all works out :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 21:27, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

I was trying to clean things up prior this article being featured when I noticed that the subfamily showed three species and the genus article did not exist. So I added the genus article and a species stub for C. croesus to get rid of the red links. Turns out it wasn't that simple. There may be two species or many more. I see someone changed C. riphearia to C. prometheus so I don't know the exact number of species in the genus or which are synonyms. Perhaps the wording should be changed to be a little vague until it is established exactly which are the correct members of the genus. I will do some additional checking myself. Cheers. Dger (talk) 21:41, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- It looks like there are actually three species in this genus. One is on St. Helena, not Africa but close. Dger (talk) 23:58, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Do you want my issues with portions of that article here, at the Wikiproject talk page or at the Article talk page? While I have issues with pieces of it, I also have issues with the entire article. It seems to span so much conceptually that like having one article on Grease that includes everything from the use in Ammunition causing the Sepoy Rebellion to the casting of John Travolta.Naraht (talk) 13:05, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

"thank" function in history
[edit]I have been trying to figure out how this works, and was searching Help, and noticed that you suggested something exactly this back in 2008. Sorry if my question is mis-directed to you - but wanted to try. Somebody thanked me for an edit a few days ago, and I forgot exactly which edit it was and now want to think about it. (an editor thanked me that I have been somewhat at odds with and it was a sweet gesture - so a nice relationship builder which is important around here). But I cannot find any log or other record of the 'thank' so am all at a loss. Do you know if there is any log where I can see which edit this "thanks" was for? Again, sorry if my question is misdirected. (btw I will watch for an answer here, if you should like to give one) Jytdog (talk) 15:48, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: Parity of zero
[edit]This is a note to let the main editors of Parity of zero know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on August 29, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or one of his delegates (Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs)), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/August 29, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:
Zero is an even number. In other words, zero's parity—the quality of an integer being even or odd—is even. It fits the definition of "even" as an integer multiple of 2, namely 0 × 2. As a result, zero has all the properties of even numbers: 0 is divisible by 2, 0 is surrounded on both sides by odd numbers, 0 is the sum of an integer (0) with itself, and a set of 0 objects can be split into two equal sets (example pictured). Zero is the additive identity element of the group of even integers, and it is the starting case from which other even natural numbers are recursively defined. Applications of this recursion from graph theory to computational geometry rely on zero being even. Among the general public, the parity of zero can be a source of confusion. In reaction time experiments, most people are slower to identify 0 as even than 2, 4, 6, or 8. Some students of mathematics—and some teachers—think that zero is odd, or both even and odd, or neither. Researchers in mathematics education propose that these misconceptions can become learning opportunities. Studying equalities like 0 × 2 = 0 can address students' doubts about calling 0 a number and using it in arithmetic. (Full article...)

- content fork that occurred in 2011 and then was left an orphan with no references. Duplicates material in Center of mass#Definition. RockMagnetist (talk) 21:47, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. RockMagnetist (talk) 21:47, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Judith Clegg on main page
[edit]I admit that I am not familiar with computer terminology, and I appreciate your expertise in the matter. But changing the hook, while on the main page, to suggest that her father encouraged her to take up computer programming at the age of 7 is a bit of a stretch. It would have been better to make a piped link to computer programming and call it what the source did: "how to code".
- ... that the father of British strategy consultant and tech entrepreneur Judith Clegg encouraged her to learn how to code when she was 7 or 8 years old? Yoninah (talk) 09:19, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
- That distinction does not make sense, since the purpose of a programming language is to program a computer. But it's off the front page now, so I don't really care. shrug Melchoir (talk) 20:07, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
Polymath project request
[edit]There has been another polymath project solved! Can you add this information to the "Problem solved" section of the article please? I think it can go under the heading of "Polymath proposal problem" under "Problem solved" section. This problem was going to become a polymath project, but someone else proved it so quickly before it becoming a polymath project (with number). However, I think it is another achievement worth mentioning in the article. Due to my limited mathematics background, I don't think I'm able to write about it as well as someone like you. Thank you! Extended confirmed protection
[edit]Hello, Melchoir. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.
In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
- Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
- A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins
[edit]Hello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers
[edit]Hi Melchoir.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Invitation to Admin confidence survey
[edit]Hello,
Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.
The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.
To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.
We really appreciate your input!

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)
[edit]ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity
[edit]Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.
Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

The article Knockdavie Castle has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No indication of notability
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. PepperBeast (talk) 14:49, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
