WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:34, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Historical eras of the country and article titles

Hi, I have recently been editing Romani people in the Czech Republic, which covers partly the history of Romani people in the area generally, but also WWII, the Communist era, and modern Czech Rep. Obviously for the vast majority of this time the Czech Republic didn't exist. There is also an article about Romani people in Czechoslovakia, which covers just the First Republic and Communist Era (no mention of WWII). There is substantial overlap between these two articles, in fact almost the whole text of the Czechoslovakia one is contained within the Czech Rep article. In theory there is clearly enough to write about to write full and separate articles about Romani in modern day CzRep and historically in the region, but both the articles are currently kind of short, so I think it makes sense to present all the information in one article. But what should that article be called? If the article incorporates info about modern day Czech Rep I feel the article shouldn't be just Czechoslovakia, cos that's inaccurate, but it shouldn't be just Czech Rep either because that ignores Slovakia. Or is it better to split the information entirely into pre-dissolution and post-dissolution? I'm sure this isn't the first time this issue has come up, so could someone point me in the direction of previous discussions on this matter which arrived at some consensus? Or share your thoughts on this specific case? Many thanks Jdcooper (talk) 12:20, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Jdcooper:. I would say the best solution would be to develop & improve the article Romani people in Czechoslovakia, including also the period of World War II. Roma people in Czechoslovakia inhabited both now-sovereign countries, so it would be better to keep the information in one article, rather than copy pasting the same info into the Romani people in the Czech Republic and Romani people in Slovakia articles. Once done, I think a short link or mention to the Romani people in Czechoslovakia article from the Romani people in the Czech Republic and Romani people in Slovakia articles would do the trick. -- Darwinek (talk) 17:02, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
Yup, that's basically what I've done I think. I don't have the knowledge to expand any of the articles really (for now at least!) but I think they look ok at the moment, and it's clear where any expansion should go. Jdcooper (talk) 17:13, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

Mass deletion nominations

About 30 short stubs on Czech books and films have been nominated for deletion today and yesterday, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Czech Republic. DaßWölf 02:35, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

I've noticed. I think that most of the articles could be easily saved. I have to admit that creations were a bit sloppy, but the nominations are sloppy as well. There is nothing creative or constructive in it. Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 04:30, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

A rather gruesome translation request

For my recent GA nom, Escape of Viktor Pestek and Siegfried Lederer from Auschwitz, I include the following statement attributed to Pestek: "Nenávidím sám sebe za to, že se musím dívat na to, jak jsou zabíjeny ženy a děti. Chtěl bych něco udělat, abych zapomněl na zápach pálícího se masa a mohl se cítit trošku čistší." My Czech is not good, but I translated this as "I hate myself for having to watch women and children be killed. I want to do something to forget the smell of burning human flesh and feel a little cleaner." I was hoping that someone could check it to make sure that it is a good translation. Thanks in advance. Catrìona (talk) 14:11, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

It is a very good translation. Well done. - Darwinek (talk) 22:46, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Czech museums on the List of music museums

Hi there, I have introduced the List of music museums, and a number of Czech museums are written in Czech (also a number in Dutch) but not in English. Are there users at this project that like to write some of these articles? Best regards, Ymnes (talk) 17:23, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

In order to not only ask, but to give something back as well, I have written an article for your project in return: Music Without Musicians (museum on mechanical music instruments). Happy editing! Ymnes (talk) 15:12, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Bandy, Floorbal, Street hockey

Hi, I am wondering why there is, on page Sport in the Czech Republic, a special paragraph about Bandy while there is not about Floorball or Street hockey? Floorbal and Street hockey are both very famous sports in Czech Republic. In both sports the Czech Republic occupies top ranks (3rd and 4th) worldwide. Yet no paragraph is written about theese sports. On the other side Bandy is unknown sport in Czech Republic. I guess most of the people in Czech Republic never heard of Bandy.

Jala38 (talk) 19:24, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

I absolutely concur. No one in the Czech Republic ever heard of bandy, with the exception of bandy players themselves. Feel free to fix the Sport in the Czech Republic article. - Darwinek (talk) 23:45, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

Question on correct article naming

Hi everyone. I've been thinking for some time if there would be any difference in English translation of vojenský prostor and vojenský újezd. After some initial research, my feeling is they both would be translated as military training area (we have already Boletice Military Training Area on enwiki), even though both vojenský prostor and vojenský újezd are slightly different things. We can even think of vojenský újezd as a type of municipal subdivision - after all the újezdy (all 4 of them in the ČR) are included in district navboxes on Czech Wikipedia as well. Can someone give an opinion / advice on this? Pinging @Filelakeshoe:. Thanks. - Darwinek (talk) 22:03, 19 July 2019 (UTC)

As I understand this "vojenský újezd" describes the administrative unit and "vojenský prostor" describes what the place is used for. The only thing that comes to mind is translating újezd as "district" rather than "area", which I feel ever so slightly better captures that, though it's not really very idiomatic. It's a good question, I have forwarded it to a group of translators, will have a better answer soon I'm sure. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 22:19, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer. Please let me know when you will hear back from the translators. - Darwinek (talk) 22:45, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
A few people suggested "military district" for vojenský újezd, which I dislike for the reason below. Another suggestion was military exclusion zone which I am not sure I agree with, as to me that rather suggests a temporary zone established during a war. Someone else suggested "proving ground" which per our article is just American English for "military training area". The idea I find myself agreeing with is that both should just be translated as "military training area" (or "proving ground", but let's stick with BrE as we already have one article.) That military training areas form municipal subdivisions administered by the army would just have to be explained in text. I doubt we would ever need separate articles for the "prostor" and "újezd" anyway. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 22:14, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer. I concur with your analysis, and also think "military training area" is the best option. Let's stick with that. - Darwinek (talk) 23:32, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
Just realised, this is a terrible idea as military district has another meaning. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 22:29, 19 July 2019 (UTC)

Koželuh

I noticed the composer Leopold Koželuh has his article here under a modified surname as Leopold Koželuch. I see some of the English-language sources really mention his surname as "Koželuch". Shouldn't we move this article to "Leopold Koželuh" in line with Czech wiki? Please note his cousin Jan Antonín Koželuh has his surname correctly written here. - Darwinek (talk) 20:30, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

Hmm, JSTOR gives far more search results for "Koželuch", which is rather surprising to me. This form is used mainly in German musicology, the Czech biography by Milan Poštolka has title Leopold Koželuh — Život a dílo [Leben und Werke]. I'm not sure about this. Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 06:09, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
As far as I know Czech classical-era composers, before the national revival, were often referred to by "German" names, and since German has no way of writing the sound ž, "Koželuch" is as good as the German fans could do.
Looking up the rest of the composers in my copy of "české sonatiny", our articles seem to generally prefer the Czech names, as in:
but the following are German:
If English sources use the German names more often there's not going to be much of a case for renaming them. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 06:54, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
I note however that even de.wiki uses "Koželuh". I guess a case could be made as per WP:NCUE "no established usage" (Czech for Czech composers). – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 07:07, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Improving this Wikiproject

There are 93 "active" members of this Wikiproject. The way I see it, we need to filter the member list and split it into categories by their activity on Wikipedia. Then – if there is enough members left in the "actually active" category – we can broadly categorize them according to their areas of interest. Most wikipedians want to contribute only to the topics they find interesting. That would enable us to directly contact each other and ask for help/second opinion. Martin J. Němeček (talk) 07:09, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello? Anybody there? Is there at least one person in this Wikiproject? Martin J. Němeček (talk) 17:38, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
There are some people who regularly contribute to this topic area (myself, Vejvančický, Filelakeshoe, Darwinek among others) but most work actually happens outside the wikiproject. (t · c) buidhe 18:06, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for responding. So is there any place where you communicate? Or is everyone just doing their own thing? Why don't we end this Wikiproject if it's not regularly used anyway? Martin J. Němeček (talk) 20:57, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
@Martin J. Němeček: Sometimes it serves to communication on Czech related topics. There's no harm in keeping it, even semi-active or almost inactive, and there's no real pressure to end it. Work on things you want to work on and come here to ask or notify when you feel it is appropriate. It's easy. Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 06:55, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Help on Eastern European languages

Hello!

Our of boredom, I am trying to identify the languages of inscriptions on a fountain located in central Budapest. I could easily identify some languages such as Hebrew, Armenian, Russian, English, French, Spanish etc. but I have trouble with some, mostly Slavic, languages which I do not speak myself. I guess that they must include Czech (or Slovak), Slovene, Croatian/Serbian/Bosniak, Macedonian, Bulgarian and/or maybe others.

Translations of 'The place is ours':

  • Trg je naš / Площадьт е наш (pretty sure that's Bulgarian) / Naš trg / Nas trg / [unreadable] naše je námestie

Translations of 'Non potable water':

  • Водата не е за пиене / Voda ni pitna / Непитна вода / Nepitná voda / Nepitka voda / Voda nije za piće

Translations of 'Open lawn':

  • Ходенето по тревата е разрешено / Dozvoljeno je gaziti (ǧaziti?) po travi / Dozvoljeno gaženje trave

I also do not manage to identify the language in 3 other inscriptions for which glossaries easily available online did not help. Could it be Romani?

  • Náj lasó ráji / Ámáro szi o placo / Pécsár saj ustarén

Is anyone here able to tell which is which? Note that many inscriptions (such as in French and Greek) have spelling mistakes and inconsistent respect of diacritics.

The ones in Cyrillic are definitely Bulgarian. "naše je námestie" (very weird syntax) and "nepitná voda" are Slovak. The others are all Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian, haven't the foggiest which are meant to be which. Some of them are slight rewordings of the same phrase, like "trg je naš" means "the square is ours" but "naš trg" just means "our square". – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 18:00, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Requested reassessment: Bohemian Shepherd

Hi all, Ive substantially rewritten Bohemian Shepherd. I'd love to garner some feedback and perhaps get an improved rating.

Thanks--Annwfwn (talk) 19:47, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

It's at least C class. It may well be B-class but I don't feel well equipped to evaluate sourcing or coverage, as required for B-class according to Wikipedia:Content_assessment. (t · c) buidhe 20:02, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon

Hello WikiProject Czech Republic:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

I believe categories that say "Czech Republic" should only cover 1993 on

I believe categories that explicitly say "Czech Republic" should only include things from 1993 on. This I think especially applies to categories by place, like establishments in the Czech Rwpublic and deaths in the Czech Republic. By not abiding by this rule, some editors are pushing to have people who died in say 1935 in both Tuberculosis deaths in the Czech Republic and Tuberculosis deaths in Czecoslovakia. I think this just leads to Category clutter. Now CEch people and it's sub-categories can have larger scopes. However I think we need to keep in mind that many residents of areas now in the Czech Republic when it was part of the Kingdom of Bohemia, the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary did not view themselves as Czech. In fact up until 1945 at least in the Sudentenland you had a large population that identified as German, not Czech. Further back you have more such people also in Prague. Once Bohemia become part of the Habsburg Lands, But especially in the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary you have lots of people move around the Empire, so residence is not a hood proxy for ethnicity, and with a de facto unified Empire, there is no local nationality to consider. We should not assume those who are from Bohemia were Czech, we need other evidence to show this. However since deaths are by place and not by nationality, and say "Czech Republic", I think using the term pre-1993 is not needed, especially since the 75 years of Czechoslovakia exceeds the 30 of the Czech Republic. Also any case of cause of death that we do not have enough cases for in a particular country we can place in the direct cause of death Category. Personally I think we have been far too quick to subdivide cause of death categories by place without showing good reason why. We might want yo Aldo ask should deaths be subdivided by place of by nationality. Do we care where a person died, or for we care what their nationality was when they died?John Pack Lambert (talk) 23:05, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

I agree and I recategorized 4 pages and 1 category in Category:1991 establishments in the Czech Republic, but the way you put this across, it is a wider issue. Can you give some concrete examples of categories in which you think articles are misplaced? C679 14:30, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
This is an issue with the main Czech Republic article, with some editors arguing that its scope goes before 1993. (as opposed to history information being briefly covered as background) (t · c) buidhe 15:24, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Translation question

I'm working on Czech railway topics and encountered cz:České Budějovice jižní zastávka. This is a minor railway halt in České Budějovice. The literal translation of this name would be České Budějovice south stop or České Budějovice south station. My question is this: is "jižní zastávka" a proper name/proper noun, or is this more of a descriptive name. Should I render this in English as České Budějovice south railway station (following naming conventions for stations). Thank you in advance for any insight. Mackensen (talk) 22:07, 14 March 2024 (UTC)

Definitely do not translate, see e.g. Praha hlavní nádraží, Praha Masarykovo nádraží. Btw. I'm surprised that there would be enough reliable sources for a separate page for a stop where there isn't even a building, just a shelter. Other wikipedias only cite the database of stops. FromCzech (talk) 05:18, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm not planning to write an article about it, but I do need to red link it. Mackensen (talk) 13:00, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Petr Fiala (senator) for creation?

First, I would like to start I am new to this WikiProject. I came across some Czech election pages mentioning a senator named Petr Fiala. I am planning to create his article by translating the page cs:Petr Fiala (senátor), but does he pass WP:NPOL and WP:GNG of English Wikipedia? From what I can read on the corresponding Czech article, the secondary sources contain brief mentions and routine coverage. My Google searches mostly come up and mix him with the Prime Minister, so I would like to verify the existence of this senator. CuteDolphin712 (talk) 12:27, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

Any parliamentarian from a sovereign nation is definitely notable, including a Czech senator :) Jdcooper (talk) 13:45, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
