Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I expanded this article on a famous Chilean woman (well, child) soldier during the War of the Pacific. Would anybody be interested in looking for further information and better sources, particularly anybody with access to a good library in Chile? I'm hoping to make this a good article. Much appreciated, —innotata 03:20, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

@Innotata: Hi there. There are some good sources in Spanish that you could use, on the Digital National Library of Chile. Visit coleccionesdigitales.cl, and search "Irene Morales" (selecting the Exacta thingy), and there you'll find some books and even some poetry! --Diego Grez (talk) 04:46, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you! That should be very helpful. (Although my Spanish isn't that good, so if anyone wants to collaborate please drop me a line, and I may end up asking for help here later.) —innotata 01:57, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
If you need help, just ask me, I may help you translating some bits if I've got the time. I'm a student of history at the U. of Chile, and though I'm in exam time, I love the history of my country and will help if you want me to. Diego Grez (talk) 03:31, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
OK, thanks! —innotata 03:37, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride!

  • What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events
  • When? June 2015
  • How can you help?
1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing!

WikiProject needs redesign

Hi. I have been a member of the WikiProject for some time but it does not seems like there is people interested on it (apart from Ruoddyssey and Dentren, and some other people whose names I can't remember). I'd like to propose two things:

  1. The main page of our WikiProject is a bit out of date and probably needs some stylizing and redesign. Examples Wikipedia:WikiProject United States (It's okay, we aren't as many as they, but we can do a good job on making our WikiProject main page more good-looking and perhaps that will attract more members!)
  2. As I said before, the project seems very inactive apart from three semi-active editors. There is a list of members of the project, and I was thinking of posting a message on every single person's talk page to remind them that this project exists, and what are we up to.

What do you think, Chilenos de Corazón? :D Diego Grez (talk) 16:10, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Let's go for it! I can help with the redesign. It really does need to be revamped, and I've been eying some designs. Also, what do you think about the Portal? - Ruodyssey (talk) 10:13, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, go ahead! As for the portal, I really had a fun time doing the portal for Pichilemu. If I have the time, I will re-design the Chile portal the next week :D The best part is to select the "In this day" events :P Diego Grez (talk) 16:07, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
A redesign with an actualization of the most needed improvements would be more than nice, but please add no more than one link to Pichilemu on it. We could also separe the member list into one "active members" and "other members" (based on when their last was), that would help people to know who to contact. Dentren | Talk 17:31, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
Hah! You're taking it seriously :D Obviously, as Pichilemu is just the capital of a province, one link should be enough, and a link to the portal. All the ideas are welcome Diego Grez (talk) 17:41, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
Don't forget to add a couple of my Chilean battleship articles to the portal. ;-) Good luck to both of you! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 07:12, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

What do you guys think of the changes? - Ruodyssey (talk) 12:42, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Excellent. Even better than I would have thought of! (My redesign of the portal has been delayed... I think I will have enough time in February, but for sure it will look perfect! ;) Diego Grez (talk) 17:53, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Great to hear! I'm sure you know of some DYKs to add, too. :) - Ruodyssey (talk) 05:16, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah! Check my userpage, I have created many DYKS about Chile (I think my only non-Chile DYK is Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand / Sie Liebt Dich). Apart from these ones, I recall the Penguin Revolution as being a DYK, and the 2010 Pichilemu earthquake. Diego Grez (talk) 17:06, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Portal:Chile?

Is there any interest to create a portal for Chile? I will start the portal and create as much content for it as I can but, I'll need help. Anybody willing to assist? --Kimontalk 15:50, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

I've created it: Portal:Chile. Feel free to edit/amend as you see fit. There's a lot of work to be done. --Kimontalk 17:59, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
For now there isnt many people that use the portal but in the future I hope it helpfwill be useful. Here i made alist of Chile-related pages in wikipedia.

Dentren | Talk 07:55, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

I would argue that there are very few members of this project but there is a larger and wider interest in Chile.
Hopefully, enough interested editors will join and contribute to our project and make the pages in Category:Chile featured articles :) --Kimontalk 18:13, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Chile in the Dutch Empire

Status of the "Special Territories"

Advice please, about the status of Easter Island and the Juan Fernández Islands.

Somebody added them to the list of countries article, describing them as "dependent territories", thus making them analogous to, among others, Greenland, French Polynesia, Aruba, Gibraltar and Puerto Rico.

Someone has now deleted it again, preferring them to be, as they were previously, described as "overseas regions of countries legally integrated into the country", along with French Guiana, the Canary Islands and Hawaii.

So what does the designation "special territory" amount to, and how different is their legislative or self-governing status from that of the rest of the country? Thanks Kevin McE (talk) 23:17, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Chile, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Chile, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Chile articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

  1. Coihaique Province
  2. Estadio Municipal de La Pintana
  3. Juan Pablo II Bridge
  4. Llanquihue Province
  5. Mancera Island
  6. San Quintín Glacier
  7. Sanhattan

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 331 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Please let me know if this is useful, or if you have any questions! -- The Anome (talk) 09:54, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Chile/Archive 2/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Chile/Archive 2/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 01:15, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Hola, the WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chile/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 29 articles to be referenced. The list of all other WikiProject UBLPs can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/WikiProjects.

Your assistance in reviewing and referencing these articles is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to ask either at WT:URBLP or at my talk page. Muchas gracias, The-Pope (talk) 16:55, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

mormon temple in Santiago

There is a Mormon temple in Santiago. Should the article belong to this WikiProject? Spalds (talk) 18:55, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Of course it should. Could you please link it to us? --Diego Grez (talk) 01:09, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Wow! Someone replied after all this time. I tagged it after there wasn't a reply. The talk page of the temple is here. Spalds (talk) 03:10, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Awesome. But I have a doubt about the article name. Shouldn't it be named Santiago Mormon Temple instead? (Let's exclude the Chile part. It's not the only Mormon temple in Chile. There's one in my hometown.) There are other non-Mormon temples in Santiago too, like a Jew one. --Diego Grez (talk) 17:18, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Well, I admit it. I'm not sure if the Pichilemu establishment is a temple or not. However, there's another temple in Concepción. --Diego Grez (talk) 17:22, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)There is one other temple in Chile, currently under construction. As for the rename, while your idea has merit, all other Mormon temples follow this format, so I assume that it was decided somewhere to do that. Looking at your userpage, you appear to be from the Pichilemu area. You may be referring to one of the many thousand (compared to 130 or so temples) meetinghouses the Mormon church has worldwide. There is a vast difference both in the meaning to the Mormons, and in the design of them. Spalds (talk) 17:25, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough. They call it here a "temple", but well, I know nothing about Mormons :-) Diego Grez (talk) 17:29, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

2010 Copiapó mining accident; request for informal review

I am one of the principal editors working on the 2010 Copiapó mining accident.

I would like to invite experienced project members to visit our article and offer their views on how were are doing for an "A" class before we request an formal assessment.

Much of the article involves Spanish language and Chilean culture, customs, government and politics. A good look-over by uninvolved editors will make sure we are within Wikipedia policy, present the information accurately and explain things in it correctly.

We also need an opinion on the article's importance rating within the scope of the Chile project.

Women in Chile

Hello. The Women in Chile page has recently been edited, and I wish to continue to add information to the page. I'm writing on this discussion page to let you all know what my plans are. Feel free to offer advice or ideas for revision.

I want to further discuss:

-Marriage and property rights for women in Chile (hopefully specifically saying what they are, and maybe what they have been in the past).

-Women's involvement in politics. Currently the only mention in that section is Michelle Bachelet and her presidency. There must be more facts about how many women are in politics and whether or not society dislikes female involvement in politics. I know that in the past there existed a Partido Femenino de Chile.

-Organizations for women's rights and empowerment, such as National Women's Service (SERNAM) and the Women's Study Center (Centro de Estudios de la Mujer). Also Chile's participation in international organizations that advocate better circumstances for women, like the United Nations and Chile's adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

-Women in the workforce (specifically mentioning informal and formal work done) and the income gap between men and women.

I also wish to add more links to the "See Also" section. Alissahart (talk) 20:17, 8 March 2012 (UTC) Changes have been put up Alissahart (talk) 20:10, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia has a category of women in politics in Chile: Chilean women in politics. This gives a rather broad range of women in politics. The current government adopted a broader package of benefits for maternity leave. I would also suggest looking at the Spanish page for the Agrupacion de Familiares de Detenidos Desaparecidos. Ccox csc (talk) 03:36, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

I found no information in sources I have about the recent maternity leave benefits. If you have a source, please go ahead and add that information to the page. I appreciate the feedback! If I have time, I'll try to read that Spanish Wikipedia page, but really don't know anything about that and don't have much time right now to study it. Alissahart (talk) 16:57, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Here are some links from the government website about it. Most commonly, it is referred to in the literature as "posnatal." http://www.mintrab.gob.cl/?tag=posnatal Ccox csc (talk) 18:56, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

I added a line under Family Law. Alissahart (talk) 04:13, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

User:Alissahart, I am surprised that I forgot about her, but another significant woman in Chile's history is Inés de Suárez. She was a Spaniard by birth, but she accompanied the Conquistadores who arrived in Chile. She merits some mention in the article. I'll leave that for you to discern where. José de San Martín

I have been working with the article José de San Martín. Although he was an Argentine general, he played an important role in the Chilean War of independence, from the aftermath of Rancagua to Maipu and the departure of the ships that took the fight to Peru. I would be better if some Chilean user checks it as well. Cambalachero (talk) 03:56, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Notability question.

Could anyone please comment on the notability of Pedro Pablo Caro. It is a bit difficult from the article to see what actually makes him notable (other than at a local level). But he is included in something called Biografias de chilenos, so I wonder if that is an indication that he is considered notable in Chile? Regards, Iselilja (talk) 18:07, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

Mayor vs Alcalde (in communes)

Most articles of Chilean communes shown the field "Alcalde" in their information boxes, and the word "alcalde" is use through the text.

In my view, this is in conflict with the Wikipedia's policy of naming conventions. "Alcalde" should be translated to "Mayor" or "Mayoress" Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(government_and_legislation). Specifically:

"When writing articles on government bodies or offices with native titles not in English, an English translation should be favored, except when reliable sources in the English language commonly use the native title. For example, National Assembly of Bulgaria (not Narodno sabranie) but 2003 loya jirga (not 2003 Grand Assembly) and Bundestag (not Parliament of Germany)."

81.99.226.197 (talk) 21:45, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Interesting point. Alcalde seems to be used in English language according to Collins Concise English Dictionary and Oxford dictionary, but Im not sure how common the usage is. Dentren | Talk 22:38, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Provinces and regions

I know that this will hardly get a response because the project is largely inactive, but I propose that we rename provinces and regions of Chile, from its current status as "X Province" or "Y Region" to "Province of X" or "Region of Y", which would make the names of the articles more similar to how we call them in Spanish. Some provinces, however, like Cardenal Caro would remain in their "X Province" status because they don't use "de" in their original names. It would be easier and more recognizable, in my opinion, to change their names to the ones I'm proposing. Much similar to what Spain does with their provinces' articles (Province of León, for example). --Küñall (talk) 20:25, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

It is good that you do this consult before doing potentially controversial changes. In google scholar I found that "Los Lagos Region" got 486 results [3] while "Region of Los Lagos" only 110 [4]. Similarly "Antofagasta Region" got 1,150 results [5] while "Region of Antofagasta" only 260 [6]. These results are not auspicious, since Wikipedia should reflect the most common usage in English. With this limited evidence in view I think we should refrain from making this proposed change or make further investigations into the English naming of Chilean regions. Final words of Balmaceda

Many years ago I got an MA in Latin American Area Studies, and Chilean history was my area of interest. At that time I read somewhere that Balmaceda's last words were, "There are two kinds of problems in the world. Those that solve themselves and those that have no solution." I probably picked this up from an obscure history book, in either English or Spanish, and I foolishly forgot the citation. anyone out there know if this is true or if there is a citation for it? Thanks 76.21.179.10 (talk) 01:33, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

According to the National Library of Chile's website Memoria Chilena ([7]) and several other books ([8]) this was actually a President Ramón Barros Luco quote: "En política, no hay sino dos clases de problemas: los que se resuelven solos y los que no tienen solución" (In politics, there are only two kinds of problems: those that solve themselves, and those that have no solution). Balmaceda's actual last words (on his so-called "political testament") were the following:

I'm fairly sure there may be an English translation out there. --Diego Grez (talk) 04:57, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 22:22, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge ‎ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 350 articles in just six days. If you would like to see this happening for Latin America, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Latin America, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:22, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

I've just started attempting to translate the Spanish Wiki page on the convicted DINA operative, Miguel Krassnoff. I would appreciate any input, as I haven't used Wikipedia properly for about 10 years, and am a bit rusty. The Spanish page is very comprehensive, so I reckon all it needs is to be transferred over. I'm not sure how references work either. Thanks! Dave (talk) 17:56, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:28, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

RfC on election/referendum naming format

An RfC on moving the year from the end to the start of article titles (e.g. South African general election, 2019 to 2019 South African general election) has been reopened for further comment, including on whether a bot could be used move the articles if it closed in favour of the change: Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (government and legislation)#Proposed change to election/referendum naming format. A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Provinces, regions and communes

Hi there. Most of the articles about regions and provinces are outdated, mentioning intendants and governors instead of presidential delegates. I have updated about two dozens of provinces, but I could not complete the task. Provinces of the regions of Arica through Maule are done. The southern ones need work. Websites of former governments should be replaced too, with those of delegations. I have also found communes' articles are very, very outdated. There are mentions to parliamentaries who ceased office eight years ago, and districts and circunscriptions suppressed in 2017. So, lots of work need to be done. In that sense, I updated many of the O'Higgins region articles, but there's tons of work in the remaining communes' articles. Not to mention, too, that names of mayors (alcaldes) are very outdated too. Hope someone will lend a hand, however it's not top urgent. --Bedivere (talk) 23:34, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Los Bajos, Frutillar

Hi, I am looking at finding sources for this article: Los Bajos, Chile. As far as I can work out this place is probably just a subdivision of the city of Frutillar, e.g., this article appears to describe it that way. Any suggestions for places I can look to know more? Without sourcing about the place the article should be deleted/redirected. FOARP (talk) 16:36, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

It is an area of Frutillar. Localities or small villages, hamlets, etc., are not administrative divisions, but they are often described and or mentioned in census records. This particular Los Bajos place is mentioned in several documents such as [9] [10] [11] I think it is worthy of a standalone article. Bedivere (talk) 21:34, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Starting this July, we will see a new contest on the scene - the Developing Countries WikiContest (WP:DCWC)! Think of it as a WikiCup but only for articles and media on developing countries.

Competitors may submit GAs, GTs, FAs, FTs, FLs, FPs, and DYK and ITN entries from/on developing countries to gain points and proceed to further rounds. Points are also awarded to those who review GAs, FAs and FLs.

Chile is listed as a developing country for the purposes of this contest, so articles related to it are eligible to be submitted to the contest. I encourage everyone here to sign up and compete with editors from around the world to create high-quality content!
