Dravidians as black people

[edit]

An editor has added a gallery of images of Dravidians and other disparate populations to the black people article, arguing that they are all typically classified as "black people" based on their often-times dark skin coloration. I have argued that this is a fringe idea analogous to the Afrocentric "Africoid" concept and that the wikipage wasn't originally intended for this purpose. Input/feedback on this issue from members of this wikiproject and its sub-projects would be appreciated. Soupforone (talk) 02:53, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Kachi disambiguation

[edit]

It seems to me that Kachi should be made into a disambiguation page, considering all the similarly-sounding entries. Of course, most of that is due to the problems inherent with transcribing South Asian languages into English. I'm not sure what most of the names involved are spelt like originally, but it appears that more than one of these terms reflects something like kacch-. I don't know if and how they relate to each other, though, for example if the Kachi Plain has any connection with Kutch, so I'm a bit lost here. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 18:08, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Media upload of historical photographs of various countries in South Asia

[edit]

Dear editors,

I would like to draw your attention to a media upload that may be of relevance to this page:

The Temminck Groll Collection consists of 2,641 historical photographs taken by the Dutch architect and architectural historian Coen Temminck Groll (1925-2015). The photos were taken in regions with which the Dutch have had historical relations, including countries in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia (see the category description for a full listing). The photos were taken during Temminck Groll's travels and study of 'shared cultural heritage' (heritage of the Netherlands located outside the country’s borders) and mainly date to the 1960s and 1970s. The photographs were digitised by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and made available to Wikimedia Commons in the context of the project The Netherlands and the world. If you have any questions about this upload, or have other media requests regarding Dutch shared cultural heritage, don't hesitate to leave a message at the project page!

South Asia or Indian subcontinent as a description of location

[edit]

Hi, I have been involved at a discussion with @Highpeaks35: about the lede of our article on Bengal, and whether we should say that it's a region in South Asia, or in the Indian subcontinent. The page history shows that a number of editors have been reverting back and forth between the two phrases, with Highpeaks35 most recently changing it back to their preferred phrase and adding a note asking editors not to change it. To summarise the discussion, Highpeaks35 has argued that it's a historical region, so we should use the Indian subcontinent because it is a more historically valid description; I have argued that the article makes it clear that Bengal still exists as a region (albeit not a country), and so we should use modern parlance in the lede when describing where it is. My feeling is that South Asia would be the more commonly used term these days (and quick Google Scholar/Google Books searches seem to back that up), but I'd be grateful for others to give their thoughts on the talk page. GirthSummit (blether) 12:57, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This can probably be closed: I've proposed an alternative form of words that uses both terms, which seems (so far) to be acceptable to all parties. GirthSummit (blether) 18:13, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Writing a New Article, Social Entrepreneurship in South Asia

[edit]

Social entrepreneurship has become a buzzword in the United States and represents a growing movement of businesses that can capitalize on social good. While exciting to see here, I feel like we often don’t hear about its existence in other parts of the world. South Asian countries represent a rapidly developing market, where entrepreneurship, specifically social entrepreneurship, is being adopted in wide numbers. These social entrepreneurial businesses are focused on solving social problems in a meaningful way. They are also helping to catalyze a people-centric economy, focused on developing capabilities first before making a profit. South Asia is also not a newcomer to social entrepreneurship. Unbeknownst to a larger Western audience, the pioneer of microcredit, Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and Nobel Peace Prize winner, is from Bangladesh. Therefore, there is a lot of history in the region, and I’d like to explore that along with the current climate and the challenges of social entrepreneurship.

Key areas of my current proposal can be found on my Sandbox page.

Please give me your feedback!

Persian Language in the Indian subcontinent

[edit]

Hey everyone! In the past few weeks I've made extensive edits to the page Persian language in the Indian subcontinent. I think it's an important topic in South Asia's medieval history. It's been a long time since it was assessed, and there are some banners for verification on the page. Hopefully some editors on this project would be interested in reassessing it. Feedback would be appreciated! Gowhk8 (talk) 17:57, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol

[edit]
New Page Patrol needs experienced volunteers
  • New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles, including South Asia related articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
  • If you would like to join the project and help out, please see the granting conditions and review our instructions page. You can apply for the user-right HERE. --John B123 (talk) 12:53, 23 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Flag in Infobox (Afghanistan)

[edit]

As the use of flags in the infobox seems to be causing some disagreement on this talk page I think it would be useful to reach a consensus specifically on this issue.

Option A Continue using the flag of the Taliban

Option B Return to the tricolour of the deposed republic

Option C Use both

Option D Use neither

Note: This discussion has been going on for a while but now seems to be roughly half and half split between those supporting option A and those suggesting another option so additional comments would be helpful.

Project-independent quality assessments

[edit]

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
